Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 4.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.41/g today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 25.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand unchanged compared to a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 12.3 cents in the last week and stands at $4.270 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $2.71/g yesterday while the most expensive was $4.49/g, a difference of $1.78/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $2.71/g while the highest was $4.49/g, a difference of $1.78/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.82/g today. The national average is up 29.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 9.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. Historical gasoline prices in Texas and the national average going back ten years: August 14, 2022: $3.41/g (U.S. Average: $3.92/g) August 14, 2021: $2.85/g (U.S. Average: $3.17/g) August 14, 2020: $1.87/g (U.S. Average: $2.18/g) August 14, 2019: $2.37/g (U.S. Average: $2.64/g) August 14, 2018: $2.62/g (U.S. Average: $2.86/g) August 14, 2017: $2.15/g (U.S. Average: $2.34/g) August 14, 2016: $1.95/g (U.S. Average: $2.12/g) August 14, 2015: $2.37/g (U.S. Average: $2.66/g) August 14, 2014: $3.27/g (U.S. Average: $3.47/g) August 14, 2013: $3.39/g (U.S. Average: $3.52/g) Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $3.39/g, down 0.9 cents per gallon from last week's $3.40/g. San Antonio- $3.30/g, down 4.4 cents per gallon from last week's $3.34/g. Austin- $3.39/g, down 2.5 cents per gallon from last week's $3.41/g. "The national average price of gasoline continues to hold near the highest level we've seen since last October, touching $3.84 per gallon. It could climb slightly higher as we get closer to Labor Day, as oil prices remain under pressure from recent OPEC+ production cuts," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "While July CPI data looked pretty good with energy prices well below their year-ago level, August data isn't going to look nearly as friendly. Gasoline prices stand just over a dime away from rising back above their year ago level something that is definitely possible by the closing summer holiday. In addition, the largest refinery in the Midwest moved up its seasonal maintenance to several weeks earlier than expected, causing a somewhat unexpected jump at the pump in the Great Lakes. Motorists will likely see a mixed bag at the pump this week, with a few states seeing prices fall slightly, while others will see the opposite." SOURCE GasBuddy

New Fall Workshops at The Woodlands Children’s Museum THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands Children’s Museum offers F a l l Wo r k s h o p s f r o m August through December 2023, including new classes and several longtime favorites. Workshops are offered year-round at the museum as part of its mission to create opportunities that educate, empower and excite children and families through play. This year, the museum is offering a MiniMilestones series, a baby development workshop for children 3-18 months old. During guided play with a skilled Physical Therapist, parents and caregivers discover engaging techniques for further developing their baby’s movement and fine motor skills. Session 1: Let’s Roll With It!, is designed for children 3-6 months old and will help your baby develop core, neck and arm strength to promote rolling and progress in their rolling skills. Session 2: Get Your Crawl On!, is offered for babies 6 months and older and will focus on encouraging progression through crawling patterns. Session 3: Look, No

Hands!, is geared for babies 8 months and older and demonstrates ways to let go of those hands and encourage independent walking! For children 2 and 3 years old, our Little Picassos workshop returns and presents grown-ups and toddlers with activities that explore art as a learning experience. Using a variety of mediums to create mini masterpieces and stimulate artistic imaginations, families share the “process” of art as a stimulus to engage discovery. Our newly added Playing Attention workshop, also for 2 and 3 year-olds, will introduce mindfulness-related concepts such as kindness, awareness of feelings, exploring with all five senses and gratitude. This workshop will promote self-worth, socialization through stories, music and movement, sensory activities, imaginative play and art. Pet Talk: KNOWING REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR PET’S RABIES VACCINATION Routine vaccinations are an essential part of your pet’s veterinary care, and veterinarians typically guide owners on how often your pet needs which shots. In the case of rabies, however, owners may be asked by their veterinarian if they prefer a vaccine that lasts one year or three years. “The differences between one-year and three-year vaccines depend on the specific vaccines,” said Dr. Lori Teller, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “Many of the adjuvanted vaccines — or vaccines with an added chemical to boost immune response and ensure protection — are similar, with the only difference being the label. The biggest factor that owners should consider is what the law is in their jurisdiction.” Local And State Laws On Rabies Vaccines The beginning of the rabies vaccination schedule is the same for cats and dogs, which is important for owners to follow since rabies is a viral disease that spreads through bites or saliva. This infectious disease will affect the central nervous system and cause

symptoms such as excessive drooling, aggression, seizures, and death. There is no effective treatment for rabies, and because rabies can spread from animals to humans, vaccinations are necessary to protect both pets and their owners. “Rabies is considered a core vaccine, meaning that all dogs and cats should be vaccinated for protection against this fatal disease,” Teller said. “A puppy or kitten should receive their first rabies vaccination between 12-16 weeks of age and then will require a booster vaccination 12 m o n t h s l a t e r. A n y subsequent vaccinations will be determined by what local or state laws mandate.” In fact, local and state laws can differ depending on how severe the risk of rabies is in an area, making it crucial for owners to discuss local vaccination requirements with their veterinarian. These laws should at least outline how often a pet should be vaccinated and with which form of the rabies vaccine. “Laws regarding rabies vaccination vary from state to state and from jurisdiction to jurisdiction,” Teller said. “Texas requires dogs and

cats to be vaccinated against rabies, but some states do not require it while others require only dogs to be vaccinated. Some municipalities require pets to be vaccinated annually, others require biennial rabies vaccinations, and then many require triennial vaccinations. There are even some that require a pet to be vaccinated annually with the threeyear vaccine.” If a pet is found to be unvaccinated for rabies or has bitten someone, owners can be fined or their pet may be quarantined away from home until it is confirmed they are not infected. Pets are also typically required to be vaccinated if they are around other animals, such as in a boarding facility or grooming salon. R a b i e s Va c c i n e Requirements Depending On Pet As long as local and state guidelines on rabies vaccines are met, owners may be given the option to choose between the one- or three-year forms of the vaccine. These options are

dependent on the type of pet, according to Teller. “If the law says that a pet can receive a three-year rabies vaccination every three years, then that would be appropriate for most dogs,” Teller explained. “The caveat to this is for cats because many veterinarians use the feline-specific, nonadjuvanted vaccine, and they prefer the one-year version for cats because it

is less expensive than the three-year version and is less likely to cause shortterm side effects, such as low-grade fever or tenderness at the vaccination site.” Working with your veterinarian to determine which rabies vaccine is right for your furry friend will keep them safe and healthy while also preventing the disease from spreading in your

Weekly Columns The Real Cost Of Free Apps And Services A weekly column by Kent Pendleton

Learn how to protect your personal information when you are using free services. You may use “free” apps for online shopping, email, cloud storage, and social media without really thinking about why those services are “free.” They are most likely free because they are harvesting and selling data about you, such as your preferences, age, race, marital status, interests, and location, among other things. These businesses sell user data to advertisers, who use that data to direct targeted advertisements to you based on your interests and online activity. For example, if you browse for shoes online, you may see ads for shoes on other sites

you visit for a while after that. If you use a free site or app that finds promotional codes for you to apply at checkout, it may be collecting and selling the data that you share. What is the harm in this? While some may feel uncomfortable with targeted advertisements, others may like when advertisers connect them to products and services that align with their interests. So, what is the harm? It is that information you wish to keep private may never actually be private. When you search the web on a free service, your activity may be broadly tracked—including, for example, searches related to a medical condition you don’t want others to know about—and shared with third parties. In addition, many social media companies collect your data and then sell it, or even use it, for purposes you may not be entirely aware of. Think back to the

Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, where millions of people were unaware of their Facebook data being harvested for political advertisements. Social media posts can also include photos or information about others who have not consented to the publication of their information (for example, children or friends who do not have social media profiles). Digital marketing companies will combine this information to build a robust digital profile—a centralized collection of everything they know about you, your friends, and your family—and sell it to a number of sources. Do you have the right to make those choices for your friends and family? What can I do? Determine whether you want to use a particular free app or software in exchange for your personal information. Here is what

you can do to help come to a decision: • Do not click on links for free apps. Independently search for the app in your device’s app store. • Read the Privacy Notice and Terms of Use. These documents describe how the company uses your data, such as whether they share your information with third parties. • Figure out where the company is located and where your data is stored because data rights vary among countries (and in some cases, states). Once you know the location of the company and where your data is stored, look into the data rights you may be afforded (such as the right to request deletion of your data). • Manage your settings and preferences. If you do not want your data shared with third parties, check the privacy settings of the app or software to see if you can opt out of

data sharing, activity tracking, or interest-based ads. Keep in mind that opting out of sharing does not mean you will not get ads, just that your information will not be shared for the purpose of personalized ads. • Consider an alternative if you are not comfortable with using a particular app or software. For example, could you switch to an email provider that does not scan your emails for advertising? Do you want to pay for a service to avoid targeted third-party ads? How a company uses your data ultimately comes down to its privacy policy, but the company will have more incentive to protect their relationship with you if you are paying for its service. • For online holiday shopping, stick with trusted websites and, if possible, work directly with the primary vendor. Before using a promo code site, consider whether that

discount is worth the price of your data privacy. As you may have heard time and again, if you are not paying for it, you are not the customer; you are the product. It’s always a responsible practice to be intentional with the types and amount of personal information you share, and to question a service that seems “too good to be true.” If you would like more information about this article or previous topics, please call our office in Montgomery, TX. Governor Abbott Signs Largest Property Tax Cut In Texas History AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today ceremonially signed legislation delivering the largest property tax cut in Te x a s h i s t o r y — $ 1 8 billion—passed during Special Session #2 of the 88th Legislature in New Caney. The Governor was joined at the historic bill signing by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, S p e a k e r D a d e Phelan, Senator Paul Bettencourt, Representative Morgan Meyer, and other members of the Texas Legislature. "Today, I am signing a

law that will ensure more than $18 billion in property tax cuts—the largest property tax cut in Texas history," said Governor Abbott. "If passed by voters this fall, Texas homestead exemptions will rise to $100,000, senior homeowners will be protected from being priced out of their home, the small business exemption for the Franchise Tax will double, and Texas small businesses will be protected from excessive appraisal increases. could have been accomplished without the hard work of Lieutenant Governor Patrick and Speaker Phelan. We all came together to offer Texans the property tax relief they so desperately deserve, and I am proud to sign these new laws today." In his 2023 State of the State address, Governor Abbott made cutting property taxes for Texans an emergency item for the 88th Legislature. Under Senate Bill 2 and Senate Bill 3, $18 billion of Texas' historic budget surplus will be allocated toward driving down school district property tax rates, increasing homestead exemptions for Texas homeowners, and increasing Franchise Tax exemptions and appraisal caps for small businesses. "The signing of this Texas-sized tax cut, the biggest property tax cut in history, is a massive victory for all 5.7 million Texas homeowners," said Lieutenant Governor Patrick. "The combination of compression and the $100,000 homestead exemption is a powerful one-two punch that will cut school property taxes for the average priced home by $1,250 to $1,450 every year on their homesteaded property." "As the saying goes,

(PHOTO: Office Of The Governor, 8/9/23) everything is bigger in Texas—and now that includes property tax relief," said Speaker Phelan. "At the start of the session, state leaders set out to pass legislation that would provide relief in a way that property owners would actually see and feel. This $18 billion package—the largest in the country—will do just that. I appreciate the hard work of all House members who helped make this historic achievement possible and am grateful to our Senate counterparts for working with our chamber to get this done." "Governor Abbott just signed the greatest tax cut in the history of the world," said Senator Bettencourt. "It’s a fabulous $18 billion tax reduction bill, and

every Texan will see huge savings on their tax bill. It was a great joy working w i t h t h e G o v e r n o r, Lieutenant Governor, Speaker, House, and Representatives Meyer and Metcalf." "I want to thank the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker for their leadership on this issue," said Representative Meyer. "It was fantastic to be able to work with the Senate to deliver this historic tax relief to the state of Texas. This absolutely, unequivocally shows that we listen to our constituents." Senate Bill 2 (Bettencourt/Meyer) provi des property tax relief through tax rate compression, an increase in the homestead exemption, and

a pilot project limiting the growth in appraised values. For tax year 2023, this will save the average Texas homestead owner over $1,200. Texas homestead owners over 65 or with a disability will see over $1,400 in savings. Senate Bill 3 (Bettencourt/Geren) law increases the Franchise Tax “no tax due” threshold to $2.47 million and removes burdensome filing requirements for those who do not owe tax. The constitutional amendment to provide the largest property tax cut in Texas history will be added to the Texas Constitution if approved by a simple majority of Texas voters on November 7, 2023.

participated in Light The Night for 18 years, raising nearly half a million dollars during that time. Cancer has also touched his family in many other ways. He lost his motherin-law and aunt to cancer. Blanton’s mother, wife, sister, and brother-in-law are cancer survivors. He also has numerous friends who have both fought blood cancers and lost loved ones. Blanton stated, “I am honored to serve as a National Ambassador and

look forward to encouraging teams from coast to coast to join me in supporting Light The Night,” said Blanton, “I am a strong believer in the work that LLS is doing to fund lifesaving research and my hope is to ignite a similar passion for this cause in others.” This year, Light The Night Montgomery County will be held on November 5, 2023, at Town Green Park.

Celebrate Smokey Bear’s 79th Birthday, only you can prevent wildfires COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M Forest Service encourages Texans to celebrate Smokey Bear’s 79th birthday today by being extremely cautious with all outdoor activities that create heat or sparks. As a national icon and the longest-running public service campaign in the United States, Smokey Bear has been teaching millions of people how to prevent wildfires since 1944. “With increased wildfire activity across Texas, Smokey Bear’s wildfire prevention message proves to be just as important now as it was 79 years ago,” said Karen Stafford, Texas A&M Forest Service Prevention Program Coordinator. Across the nation, approximately nine out of 10 wildfires are humancaused. In Texas last year, 96 percent of all reported wildfires were started by humans and their activities – completely preventable. “The most common causes of wildfires during

the summer are debris burning and equipment use,” said Stafford. “This includes parking in dry grass and dragging trailer chains.” Smokey Bear recommends some tried and true practices to help prevent wildfires this summer: * Always check with local officials for burn bans and other outdoor burning restrictions. Pay attention to local guidelines regarding open fires, campfires and outdoor activities that may pose a fire hazard. For burn ban information, visit https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/Te xasBurnBans/. * Park in designated spaces and avoid driving over and/or parking on dry grass. The heat from a vehicle can easily ignite the grass. * When using a cooking fire or campfire, never leave it unattended. Always make sure it is completely out by drowning it with water, stirring it and feeling to ensure it is out cold before

leaving. * When pulling a trailer, ensure the chains are properly connected and do not drag on the road as this can create sparks. * If you witness suspicious behavior or signs of arson, immediately call the local authorities. * Stay wildfire aware. If a wildfire is spotted, immediately contact local authorities. A quick response can help save lives and property. Remember, only you can prevent wildfires. For more information about summer wildfire

prevention, visit https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/su mmerwildfires/. In preparation for S m o k e y B e a r ’s 8 0 t h birthday celebration in 2024, Texas A&M Forest Service has launched a poster contest for Texas students in kindergarten through 12th grade. For information and contest r u l e s , v i s i t https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/Sm okeyPosterContest/. All contest entries must be received or postmarked by Sept. 15, 2023, for consideration.

Devotional Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

Some people have a penchant for seeking out songs of love. My husband and I are two of those kinds of people. When we met in college, we spent some time in the Student Union Building (then called “the Sub”), dancing to the sweetheart songs of that day. They were all about love. Now, we find all the love songs we want by listening to worship songs from our church and finding others online. Songs about God and Jesus can be found through music groups and churches online. Also, we are doubly

Making The Rhythm Of Love Songs A Priority Of Life blessed to have a small and very old canary who loves to worship and sing along with us as we watch church services online. He really loves Jesus! How do worship songs put in us a rest of our souls from the cares of everyday life? When the songs are all about God, Jesus, and Angel Armies, they give us a restful peace of a loving and caring God who gives us His all every day. His love is in the rhythm of the words and the sound of His heart for us. There are even Psalms about the Lord Jesus which speak of His ruling from Mt. Zion in the future: “Then those who sing as well as those who play the flutes shall say, ‘All my springs of joy

are in you.’ “ Psalm 87:7. (meaning in Mt. Zion.). The center of Jesus’ reign over the earth will be on our new earth to come in Jerusalem, right on top of Mt. Zion. That is only a small part or what God has to say about songs of love and joy: “The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; the world and all it c o n t a i n s , Yo u h a v e f o u n d e d them….Lovingkindness and truth go before You. How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O LORD, they walk i n t h e l i g h t o f Yo u r countenance. In Your name they rejoice all the day…. Psalm 89: 11, 14b, 15, 16a.

God also has a specific rhythm for the earth, such as the four seasons; rainfall for planting crops and for gathering at the right times….time for our winter rest and a time for playing in the sun. Don’t forget that every song or hum that comes to God from your spirit is very precious. I have developed a habit of just saying, “I love You, Father. I love you, Jesus. I love You, Holy Spirit, right before I rise in the mornings. When I focus on His mercies and plans for me, then the day goes very well. My whole day then, is focused on knowing He’s there as I work. It keeps a rhythm of love going all the day long. We may not realize how

close God truly is to us as we go about our regular activities, and problems that come up, but He never leaves a heart that is tuned in to Him at the first of every day. Our problems are His problems, and He is there to help us. Jesus certainly had problems in His day, and He talked them over with His Father at night. Here is what He says to us about our days: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavyladen, and I will give you rest…Take My yoke upon

you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” M a t t h e w 11 : 2 8 - 3 0 . God desires for us to live our days in a rhythm of love, a lightness of step, and with songs of thankfulness for all His blessings in life. And some may become curious as to how you do that!
