Texas Heritage Trials Chapter, NSDAR, Weekly Tour The Houston Police Department’s Gas Prices (August 16, 2021) - Texas gas prices are unchanged in the past week, averaging $2.84/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 0.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 98.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.49/g today while the most expensive is $3.99/g, a difference of $1.50/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.49/g while the highest is $3.99/g, a difference of $1.50/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.17/g today. The national average is unchanged from a month ago and stands $1.01/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.94/g, down 3.0 cents per gallon from last week's $2.97/g. San Antonio- $2.72/g, down 5.7 cents per gallon from last week's $2.78/g. Austin- $2.78/g, down 3.4 cents per gallon from last week's $2.82/g. "As the number of Covid cases continues to surge globally, oil prices continue to be under pressure due to some countries instituting travel and movement limitations. This limits oil demand, which has led to the increase in gas prices slowing, and many states seeing slight drops compared to prices a week ago," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "In addition, the tropics are heating up, which could be a source of upward pressure on gas prices should we see a major hurricane target the Gulf Coast. However, without such a storm, gas prices may see some stability over the coming week or two, before slowly decreasing as the summer driving season wraps up." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. Trying to work on them to try to get them out,” a first responder can be heard saying in dispatch audio. ABC13 talked to residents in a nearby apartment complex who
were able to rescue people. Children as young as 18 months old were on the boat. “Man, it was a pretty rough scene because the waves were five or six feet at least, and we were slowly pulling people back. And finally, the police got here, and they dove into the water and checked, and it seems like we got everybody accounted for,” said Brock O’Rourke, who helped rescue people. “I made sure the little ones were out first. There were probably more than four of them. Other than that, they were less than five years old,” said Diana
Elizalde, who was on the boat. Crews rinsed off passengers covered in diesel fuel from the accident. Authorities say everyone was removed from the water and accounted for. According to information from the Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Lake Conroe Queen is a 60 passenger, double-deck sternwheeler paddleboat. A reproduction of the 1860’s riverboat, the Lake Conroe Queen was built in 1986 in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Source: Scott Engle (MCPR)

That day, as he was pulling out of his cul-desac to begin his shift, he saw two men in a driveway. Then he heard gunfire and saw one of the men shot several times in the chest. The suspect walked up the driveway and entered the house through the open door. Stoner left his vehicle and went to the house with his weapon drawn. As he looked through the front door, he saw the suspect in the hallway with a weapon. Stoner shouted commands, startling the suspect, and the man complied with the order to drop his weapon and lay on the ground. Stoner approached the man, kicked the gun away and apprehended him. He then assessed the house and found a female with a gunshot wound. Stoner was able to provide medical assistance to the woman until EMS arrived. The male victim in the driveway did not survive. Suggestions for Mindful Eating: Crab Cakes imports and consumes the most. Crab meat has many of the same nutrients as other popular types of seafood but with lower levels of mercury than marlin, swordfish, grouper, and tuna. Crab is packed with protein, which is important for building and maintaining muscle. Crab also contains high levels of o m e g a - 3 f a t t y acids, vitamin B12, and selenium. These nutrients play vital roles in improving general health while helping prevent a variety of chronic conditions. Getting Good Crab The first problem with most crab cakes is the crab itself. It's easy to find picked blue crab meat (the only crab variety for crab cakes!) in pasteurized tubs, but the stuff is fishy smelling, wet, and already overcooked. Without good crab to start with, you can't make good crab cakes. What you want to look for is fresh-picked lump or jumbo lump crab meat. Crab season on the eastern seaboard runs from spring through late fall. Here on the Gulf Coast, we are more likely to get it from Texas or Louisiana. I get mine from Woodlands Seafood Market and know it’s fresh. Crab Cakes: 2 pounds fresh jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over for shells and cartilage 1 1/2 cups panko 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup chopped chives 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons seafood seasoning, such as Old Bay Freshly ground black pepper Juice and zest of 1 lemon, plus more lemon wedges for serving
3 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons olive oil Tartar Sauce: 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup chopped dill pickles (about 2 whole pickles) 1 tablespoon capers, chopped 1 tablespoon minced chives Juice and zest of 1 lemon Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. (crab cakes are finished in the oven) 2. For the crab cakes: Gently fold together the crabmeat, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, chives, Dijon mustard, seafood seasoning, 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper and the juice and zest of one lemon in a large bowl. 3. Place a sheet of aluminum foil roughly 12by 18-inches on a work surface with the short end parallel to the edges of the table. Transfer crab mixture to the foil, forming it into a rough log about 6 inches wide, starting about 4inches from bottom of foil. 4. Carefully lift bottom edge of foil and lift it over the crab log. Roll the log away from you until it is completely wrapped in foil, then twist the ends to form a tight roll 6- to 8-inches wide and 3- to 4-inches in diameter. Place log on a tray or plate and transfer to the freezer until lightly stiffened, 20 to 25 minutes. 5. Remove the log from the freezer and using a sharp chef's knife, slice off one of the twisted ends. Remove crab mixture from inside twisted end and reserve. Slice the log into 4 to 6 individual disks about 1 1/2inch thick each. Transfer the disks (with their foil) to a rimmed baking sheet cutside down. Combine any

There are lots of recipes for crab cakes, but we could all agree it should have plenty of fresh, high-quality crabmeat with very little filler. These below are generously sized and highly seasoned—with plenty of lemon juice, fresh herbs and spices. I left out any salt because the salt found in the seafood seasoning like Old Bay can be enough. Try your mixture and and salt to suit your taste. The jumbo lump crabmeat is front and center, so splurge on the best and freshest you can find. Crab is delightfully salty with a slight hint of mineral sweetness; crab delivers all the appeal of seafood without the fishy aftertaste that some people prefer to avoid. Available in varieties such as Dungeness and Alaskan King, this crustacean is caught and enjoyed all around the world. Historians believe that crab was one of the earliest foods enjoyed by coastal populations. Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of crab and other edible marine animals along the Eritrean coast. Additional archaeological discoveries from the Chesapeake Bay area suggest that crab was also among the most popular foods for Native Americans and early colonists. Today, crab is regarded as a plentiful source of easily caught meat in some areas and as a delicacy in others. China is the world's largest exporter of crab while the United States

Texas State Senator
My Five Cents...
Robert Nichols
A monthly column from Sen. Robert Nichols by Sen. Robert Nichols, Senate District 3
Summer is drawing to a close and back-to-school season is here. TxDOT asks all Texans to be aware of school zones and school buses as children head back to campus. Remember to slow down for school zones and be prepared to stop for stopped school buses. Here are five things happening around your state: 1. Second special session begins This week Governor
Abbott called a second special session starting on August 7. For this special session, he added several more agenda items to the call from the first special. Some of the new additions include handling federal appropriations, shifting back primary election dates for next year to the delay in census data, preempting local regulation of business practices, and education issues. With these additions to the call, there are now 17 agenda

items we will be working on. The Senate got right to it, holding committee hearings over the weekend and into this week. I'm in Austin representing the people of Senate District 3 on these issues and ensuring their voice is heard. 2. Senate passes priority aenda items in first week With the start of the special session, bills were filed very quickly and committees began to meet. This week I participated in a Senate Finance Committee hearing where we discussed bills to give our retired teachers a 13th check, appropriating funding for Article 10 of the budget which funds the legislature, and a supplemental appropriations bill for other priorities for this session. I also participated in a Business and Commerce Committee hearing where we discussed Senate Bill 14, which would ensure that local municipalities and counties cannot pass ordinances that mandate employment benefits or practices. On the floor this week, we voted on and passed legislation regarding bail reform, property tax relief, family violence prevention
and education, banning critical race theory in schools, election integrity, and much more. Many of these bills we considered in the regular session and passed in the Senate and in the first called special. The Senate will keep working on these issues as special session continues in hopes that they will all be finally passed at the end of this session. 3. Comptroller officially opens Broadband Development Office T h i s m o n t h Te x a s Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced the establishment of the Broadband Development Office (BDO) as created by House Bill 5, a bill I authored with Rep. Trent Ashby. The BDO will award grants, low-interest loans, and other financial incentives to broadband service providers who expand access to broadband service in underserved areas. The founding director of the new office is Greg Conte who has worked in the Comptroller's office for the past five years. The office will be in charge of developing a broadband accessibility map, creating and maintaining a statewide
broadband plan, engaging in community outreach to encourage expansion and adoption of broadband, and a clearing house for information about federal funding or grants available to local municipalities. This office will guide our state as we navigate expansion of this essential service. 4. Cargill, Continental Grain acquire Sanderson Farms Cargill Inc. and agricultural-investment firm Continental Grain Co. announced the agreement to acquire Sanderson Farms for $4.5 billion this week. Sanderson Farms is the country's third largest chicken producer and has thirteen locations across the southern United States including several locations in Texas. In Senate District 3, Palestine is home to a Sanderson Farms' hatchery, processing plant, and feed mill. As a result of this transaction, Sanderson Farms will be combined with Wayne Farms, a subsidiary of Continental Grain. Sanderson Farms started as a small, familyrun supply store around 75 years ago and grew exponentially into the substantial poultry
operation it is today. The new company will remain committed to supporting independent American farmers and the communities in which they live. 5. Alligator snapping turtles seized in illegal trafficking case returned Last week, twentyseven alligator snapping turtles were released back into East Texas after being trafficked to Louisiana several years ago. The turtles were seized by Louisiana law enforcement in 2016 after they were trafficked across state lines. The turtles are a popular food item n Louisiana, where they can be harvested with a restricted limit of one per day. In Texas, alligator snapping turtles are a protected species and harvesting them is illegal. The poached turtles were held at the Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery in Louisiana for the past several years where the Texas Parks and Wildlife Nongame and Rare Species program staff worked with turtle researchers to determine where they came from.

today in Austin, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (RTX) addressed the ongoing situation in Afghanistan. He said the following at an event at Camp Swift Training Center: “This was a huge error on the part of our national leadership, starting with the President of the United States. To number one, signal the date that we would leave so the Taliban would know when they would be able to have free reign all the way to Kabul, but to provide no transitional support for our Afghan partners? This was an unforced error, and it is a painful lesson that we’ve learned that what happens in Afghanistan does not stay in Afghanistan.”
“One of the lessons I thought we’d learned 20 years ago after 9/11 was that if you leave ungoverned spaces or power vacuums, that terrorism will be bred, and there’s no question that al-Qaida, and ISIS, and other terrorist organizations will use this as an opportunity to reconstitute themselves and be a threat not only in the region, but to the American homeland. Unfortunately what we’re seeing now, I think, is an unforced error.” “One of the other tragic parts of this is the men and women, the Afghan interpreters, the other support that we’ve seen, people who worked with us in Afghanistan for the last 20 years have been
literally stranded and left to be slaughtered by the Taliban. We did have a plan for special interest visas, to bring more of those Afghans here to the United States, to provide them an opportunity as refugees to come here and to save their lives and the lives of their families.” “Unfortunately because of this precipitous fall of Kabul and Afghanistan, a lot of those Afghan interpreters and partners who’ve worked with us in good faith over the years believing that we would take care of them or protect them and their families are going to be killed, and that, again, is another part of this terrible tragedy.”

The bill also proposes $135 million on studies and pilot projects for "miles traveled tax." Instead of being taxed at the gas pump, you are taxed based on the number of miles you drive annually. Another $1 billion would be spent on the Reconnecting Communities Act, a program that tears down highways in big cities. The Biden administration wanted $20 billion for this and radical progressive activists like AOC are already demanding more. Washington fails
to understand that our highways are our economic engines, not only in Texas but the entire country. For over a decade, our state has been a leader in exports, and we rely heavily on our trade relationships with Canada and Mexico. Washington politicians are also calling for new spending towards mass transit and intercity rail, even though transit and rail account for a minuscule share of national travel. Activists demand that highways and mass transit receive equal funding. The passing of the Senate bill is a big step in that direction. It gets worse, the federal government is elbowing its way into the private sector. The Senate version of this bill encroaches into private sector areas of energy– greatly impacting rural broadband internet. Some $138 billion would go towards subsidies, mandates, and government
operated enterprises. This creates competition with private providers and results in harming the backbone of rural economies. Washington would also intervene in areas normally left to local government. The Senate bill has $55 billion for local water systems, helping bail out poorly run cities that have neglected aging water systems. Congress returns in September, and I encourage taxpayers to act now and alert their elected officials in Washington. This sort of federal and financial intervention is something most Americans can do without. The cost of this bill is a burden on rural Americans, with an economic impact that endangers an industry that provides the fuel, fiber, and food that our country depends on.

Devotional Burned Out - Lonesome - Tired - Continue Seeking! Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
When I began thinking about my title for this week, I never realized the first two words above, “Burned Out,” would actually be in the American Dictionary, but there it was. It is listed as an adjective which means “physically or emotionally exhausted.” If this is an illustration of you right now, then help is on the way! Let me give a quick illustration of what I mean. As I was talking on
the phone to a friend of mine, she was looking out the window of her home when all of a sudden she became immediately quiet. Then she gave a loud shout and exclaimed, “Oh, look at that beautiful cardinal! How gorgeous he is! And he’s just still and looking in the window at me…” What was so amazing about her outburst was she had been telling me about how sick she was. So what did I think about that? I realized God had brought her a beautiful creation of His to brighten her life on this particularly beautiful day. She had been so sad about many things happening in her life the

past several weeks, and God had decided to give her a beautiful sight of His own to help the dark clouds of depression go right away. I was so grateful to God for lifting up her tiredness, her sadness, and her downtrodden spirit. He knew exactly what to bring her to place something lovely in her life, which lifted her tired and burned-out spirit. We were even laughing at his antics outside the window. It seems no matter what our feelings may be, God in His infinite mercy, can show up in a way that brings us joy. This is a story from Steve, a reader answering last week’s request for a story of an “extraordinary happening” involving God’s help in a dangerous situation: “My family and my brother’s family in 1993 made a trip to Branson, Missouri. We rode a train, pulled by a tractor to see a play called, “Shepherd of the Hills.” On the way back down the mountain, the train came loose and we went careening, backwards, down the hill until some trees stopped us. He is such a Good God. He can save whole families or help a sad and hurting spirit turn heaviness into joy. That’s the God we pray to and the God who helps us when we need Him the most.
