Texas The Heritage Trails Chapter, National Society Daughters of the Weekly American Revolution, Announce Gas Prices New Officers for the 2020-2022 Term Texas gas prices have risen 2.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.86/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations. Gas prices in Texas are 4.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 48.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $1.48/g today while the most expensive is $2.53/g, a difference of $1.05/g. The lowest price in the state today is $1.48/g while the highest is $2.53/g, a difference of $1.05/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $ 2 . 1 6 / g t o d a y. T h e national average is down 3.9 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 45.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa$1.93/g, down 3.5 cents per gallon from last week's $1.97/g. San Antonio- $1.79/g, up 10.5 cents per gallon from last week's $1.69/g. Austin- $1.86/g, up 5.1 cents per gallon from last week's $1.80/g. “For the seventh straight week and now some 53 days, the national average price of gasoline has stayed in a range of less than a nickel, an incredible feat for the summer driving season, and a level of summer stability we haven't seen in decades," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "However, with new data from the Pay with GasBuddy payments card showing weekly demand last week rose to a fresh coronavirus high, we may see some upside in oil prices propelled by the good news that demand is solidly moving higher again. Should demand continue to rebound, its only natural that with less oil on global markets, prices are likely to drift to the upside if the situation continues to improve. "

Nothing Can Stop Love... Or Marriage, Not Even A Pandemic A new shop aimed at helping brides save some serious money has opened in The Westmont Building in historic, downtown Montgomery. Southern Belle is a bridal consignment shop offering both new and once-used wedding dresses, bridal party dresses and accessories at steeply discounted prices. Owner Chelsea Conner created her shop out of a passion for all things “DIY”, which usually requires thinking outside of the box! And that includes creative ways to find a designer wedding dress at an affordable price! “As every loyal Maid of Honor does, I went to store after store trying to help my sister find her dream dress on a very strict budget. It was very difficult, almost impossible! As a resaleshop enthusiast myself, the idea just came to me... what if I could help women sell their “once loved” wedding dress to recoup some of their money, and provide a place for brides-to-be to find an affordable designer dress. My hope is to provide every bride, on every budget, with an intimate and satisfying shopping experience.” Why Montgomery? “I wanted my shop to be in my local community, and because there are no retail bridal stores in Montgomery it made
perfect sense. The downtown retail square has such a simple, quaint feel to it I thought a bridal shop would fit right in. We are also in close proximity to Hodge Podge Lodge, a historic bed-and-breakfast wedding venue, and we are expecting another wedding venue, the Luminaire to open this fall near Lake Conroe. Southern Belle will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00am4:00pm and Sundays by a p p o i n t m e n t o n l y. Appointments are required to try on dresses, but not to bring consignment items in. How does consignment work? “We are always looking for savvy sellers to consign their dress and bridal accessories in our shop. We take all the risk and stress out of trying to sell on your own. We treat your dress like it's our own, so you can rest assured your dress will remain in great condition. We a l s o o f f e r complimentary cleaning services for minor dirt and stains,” Conner says. “ Wo m e n w h o a r e interested in selling on consignment simply need to bring their dress into the store so we can check it for quality and style, review our consignment contract, and agree on a listing price. When we sell their items we send the consignor a check for 50% of the selling
Owner, Chelsea Conner price!” When asked what women can expect when they come in Conner replied, “I think girls will be pleasantly surprised when they come in. Because the space is small, it provides women with an intimate one-on-one shopping experience. Each bride receives personal attention during their appointment. The space is warm and inviting, providing simple
touches of good ol’ Southern charm for the ultimate bridal experience.” The shop is now accepting wedding dresses, bridal party dresses, and bridal accessories on consignment. Texas Four-Ball Set for Aug. 21-23 at Weiskopf Course DALLAS – The 2020 Te x a s F o u r- B a l l , t h e second TGA major of the season, will be played Aug. 21-23 on the Weiskopf Course at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club in Montgomery. “The TGA is excited to have Bentwater host the year’s Texas Four-Ball,” said Justin Guthrie, TGA Tournament Manager. “The recently renovated Weiskopf Course will be in fantastic shape and a great test for the field.” With its spectacular setting on the western shores of Lake Conroe and three award-winning courses, Bentwater Yacht & Country Club is one of the state’s premier golf communities. The Weiskopf Course, the first built at Bentwater, made its stunning debut in 1989 and was designed by PGA Tour legend Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The architectural duo took full advantage of the site’s natural beauty – stately hardwoods and towering pine trees, rolling topography, elevation changes and numerous water features – to create a course that is all together enjoyable, challenging and visually sensational. With options to play shots over inlets or carry corners of tree-lined doglegs, the Weiskopf Course provides plenty of exciting riskreward moments throughout the round. The Texas Four-Ball features an 80-team starting field comprised of three age divisions playing from different tees with separate champions crowned: Championship (25 years and older), Senior (55 and older) and Super Senior (65 and older). The format for the championship is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After the completion of 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 40 teams, including ties. A t t h e 2 0 1 9 championship held at Wichita Falls Country Club, Joshua Irving and Will Osborne posted a 54hole total of 15-under-par 1 9 8 t o w i n t h e Championship Division. John Pierce and Craig Hall finished at 14-under 199 to win their second consecutive Senior Division title. Bob Hullender and James Martin won the Super Senior title by five shots with a 5-over 218 total. Live scoring updates, daily recaps, as well as teetimes and pairings, will be available at txga.org once the action gets underway from Bentwater Yacht & CC. Suggestions For Mindful Eating: Burger Buns Beyond the Burger Food for Thought Diana Anderson
DianaCAnderson@ gmail.com
It's summertime. You're cooking up a ton of burgers. You can keep extra ground beef in the freezer, extra ketchup in the fridge, but the buns? I’ve tried freezing them and always end up disappointed when I’m putting my fresh burger on less than fresh buns. So sometimes I may find myself with a few extra on hand. There are so many ways to use buns
besides for burgers. 1. Sloppy Joes These can be made from scratch or shortcutted with a can of Manwich. Either way, consider using chorizo instead of ground beef to change things up and garnish with some slices of avocado. 2. Garlic Bread Garlic bread is great. Garlic buns are better. A hard-as-rock toasted baguette of garlic bread leaves chopped garlic and crumbs flying everywhere when you bite into it. A lightly toasted, fluffy bun does no such thing. More
butter garlic in your mouth, not on the table. An easy way to do it is to make garlic butter and smear it on both sides of the buns then bake at 350 until just toasted. * For the Garlic Butter: * 4 tablespoons butter * 2 medium cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons) * 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano * 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or basil leaves 3.Cuban Sandwiches Burger buns make the perfect panini vessels. Try them on your next Cuban and see if the mustard-
smeared buns don't perfectly hold that melted ham and cheese. If you have never made Cuban Sandwiches, they are hearty. Perfect if you have leftover roast pork. If you don’t and still fancy this sandwich stop by the deli in the supermarket and get some sliced. Preheat a panini press or a large cast iron skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lay buns, open side up, on a work surface and spread the bottom and top halves with mustard. Layer bottom and top halves with Swiss cheese. Working only on bottom halves,
layer on all of the pickles (thinly sliced dill), ham, roast pork, and salami (if using). Close sandwiches, pressing gently. Cook in a heavy pan with melted butter. Press something heavy on top of sandwich. When crisp, flip sandwiches, add more butter, swirl to coat, and continue cooking while pressing until crisp on both sides, about 10 minutes total. Slice sandwiches in half diagonally and serve immediately. 4. Breakfast Sandwiches Speaking of a perfect match, burger buns plus
fried eggs, bacon, and cheese? The fluffy interior of the bun soaks up the bacon fat and egg yolk while the volume of said bun protects your hands from getting greasy. That's a breakfast of champions. 5. Pizza French bread pizza is uniquely satisfying, the heft of the bread standing up well to sauce, cheese, and toppings. But when you don't have a fresh loaf lying around, a burger bun is the answer. Think of it as a pizza bagel.

Comments According to Doc “A Man For All Seasons!” A '4 T 18 Hour Work day For An Annual Salary OF One Dollar! Walden Happenings By Doc Fennessy The opinions expressed in this editorial do not necessarily reflect those of MCN.
Let’s look at this man for one damn second! A 74 year old man coming back home from work at 2AM while most men his age are retired in their vacation homes. He comes back after a long day that probably started before the sun rose and gets back home exhausted with his tie open and hat in his hand feeling that an accomplished day is finally over. That amazing man is in the age of many people’s grandfathers, great grandfathers or my grandfather when he passed away, but this man just came back home from work, for me, for you. This man, left his massive gold covered mansion where he could retire happily and play golf all day long.
But this man put his wealth aside and went to work for free, for $1 a year, for me, for you, for us, for AMERICA. President Trumps annual salary is $446,000.Of that president Trump retains $1 a year. To legally make him a federal employee; all of the entire rest of the $446,000 is donated to the veterans association to pay for the medical expenses of the wounded military service people in the hospitals. While other presidents became rich from the presidency, this man LOST over 2 billion dollars of his wealth during this short 4 years of his life. He put aside his amazing retirement lifestyle for getting ambushed every single day by the media and the Radical Left Democrats that trash this man who works for them until 1AM for free! He doesn't do it for money or power, he already had it. He is doing it so their houses will be safe, so their schools will get better, so they will be able to find
jobs or start a new business easier, so they will be able to keep few dollars in their pockets at the end of the month while other presidents before him made sure to keep digging in their pockets and empty them for taxes. Look at this picture again, that man is at the age of your fathers, grandfathers or maybe YOU! Where is your respect? Honor? Appreciation? Are you THAT BLIND? THAT BLIND to not see a thing this man is doing for you and for your family? THAT BLIND that after all his work for minority groups in America you keep calling him a racist? I am the son of an Auschwitz Survivor and someone who lost 99% of my family to the camps and ovens of Nazi Germany. And I’m no fool! DONALD TRUMP IS NO RACIST OR ANTISEMITE! Are you THAT BLIND to not see how much this country developed in last 4 years?
Walk To End Alzheimer’s One health fact that everyone should know by now is that walking is good for you. Equipment is minimal – just comfortable shoes. There are no gym fees, no heavy weights, and you can certainly go at your own pace. Listen to music, think, let your dog enjoy the great outdoors with you. Right now as fall weather kind of/sort of/almost/maybe/is on its way/arrives in Texas, it’s a great time to take a walk around the neighborhood – and we have a great way to do it! Join your local Walk to End Alzheimer’s. You c a n f i n d i t at www.act.alz.org This year’s Walk won’t be the large crowd all in one place you are used to. We’ll be walking together, yet social distancing. Everything will be controlled through our new Mainstage app. That means you can walk in your own neighborhood alone, or with your family. Walk on a trail. Walk anywhere – in fact, the slogan for Walk in 2020 is “Walk
is Everywhere!” A daily walk is not only good for your health, your waistline and your well-being – but also for your brain. Studies have shown that physical activity – even mild physical activity such as walking – is associated with a decreased risk of cognit i v e impairment. Researchers have found that inactive, but otherwise healthy, seniors who begin an exercise program experience significantly improved cognitive function. Studies most consistently demonstrate the exercise must be regular and tend toward the more vigorous side. In people with mild cognitive impairment, walking just 5 miles a week reduced brain atrophy and cognitive decline by more than 50%. So lace up your shoes, put the dog on a leash, and hit the pavement for the 2 0 2 0 Wa l k t o E n d Alzheimer’s! Your brain will thank you for it!

President Donald J. Trump, I want to thank you with all my heart. I am so sorry for blind hatred you have been made to endure. +You are a good and generous man. I KNOW THIS. What I don’t know and think about often is what kind of people is it who can be so hateful in their hearts to spew such hate and evilness, not just at you but at your family too? Or people mocking and making jokes of you because you’re not a professional politician groomed in speech making and straight faced lying. Or attacking your wife and young son. People so sure they have not been manipulated. People who believe their hatred is their own. But for why, they can’t articulate. What kind of people are these? WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE THESE?? People not realizing they have been manipulated and brainwashed by such a deep rooted E V I L N E S S MOTIVATED BY AN EVIL MEDIA AND DEMOCRAT PARTY. Th e A mer ican
President Donald J. Trump is hated in everything he accomplishes for the benefit of the American Citizens because OF DESTROYING THEIR POLITIC CRUPTIONS.
People are in a bad place [Comments by Doc.’ right now.... in their Yes, I just said it! A hearts and souls. God Letter from an unknown help us.... Trump is not writer ]. the problem. *** “Will you share this? “ [

Texas Beef Council Presents Checkoff Update, Prime Rib Demo At 2020 Beef Cattle Short Course A U S T I N , Te x a s (August 12, 2020) – The Te x a s B e e f C o u n c i l presented a Beef Checkoff Update during the annual Beef Cattle Short Course at Texas A&M University in College Station, held this year on August 3-5. The Short Course is one of the largest and best-attended beef cattle educational events in the country, attracting cattlemen and women from across the country and featuring more than 40 concurrent educational sessions for producers at all experience levels. Like so many other events this year, the 2020 Beef Cattle Short Course went virtual, giving producers the opportunity to attend sessions and demonstrations from the comfort of their own farms and ranches. An impressive 1,800 producers registered for this year’s virtual Short Course, only slightly down from previous years. “While we certainly missed the one-on-one interaction of previous Beef Cattle Short Courses, we were all very pleased to be a part of this year’s event,” said Jason Bagley, vice president of beef resources for the Texas Beef Council. “The Short Course provides an invaluable opportunity to share how we and the national Beef Checkoff continue to grow beef demand with thousands of producers from Texas and other parts of the country. While it’s been a challenging year, we’re finding very creative ways to keep
beef top of mind for consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Bagley and his Texas Beef Council colleagues, Jennifer Matison, vice president of marketing, and Russell Woodward, senior manager of channel marketing, presented program highlights on both the state and national levels, giving producers information about how their Checkoff dollars are working to promote beef: ? “United We Steak” National Beef Checkoff Campaign. This summertime promotion unites Americans in their shared love of beef on the grill and features 50 hand-carved, state-shaped steaks. To date, the campaign has earned five million impressions in Texas alone, not including social media data. The Texas landing page, which includes a link back to BeefLovingTexans.com, has been viewed more than 15,000 times. ? Texas Consumer Advertising Campaigns and Digital Engagement. Launched in 2019, the “For All Plates of Life” campaign celebrates beef’s versatility and Texas diversity. Targeted at older millennial parents in Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio, this award-winning video and audio campaign has received 291.1 million impressions statewide on various digital platforms. Digital ad buys allowed for more flexibility in timing, platform and content, making it an ideal tactic
during the COVID-19 pandemic. Another consumer highlight included the BBQuest TV series exploring barbecue across Texas. Now in its second season, the show continues to be popular on BeefLovingTexans.com, Hulu and YouTube, with 1.2 million video views, 11 million media impressions and 226,000 social media engagements. ? Educational programs and engagement with culinary and health professionals. A virtual Texas high school culinary educators training conference provided 80 teachers with beef industry information and cooking demos. Meanwhile “The Raw Truth About Beef” online learning resource has helped more than 1,200 dietitians, chefs and teachers explore the beef industry from pasture to plate. A medical office outreach program has educated medical professionals on beef’s positive role in a high-cholesterol patient’s diet. ? International promot i o n s w i t h C h e c k o ff partner, U.S. Meat Export Federation. A creative, video-based web campaign promoting different beef cuts in Japan surpassed its goal of reaching one million people in just two weeks. While exports to Japan were down in 2019, U.S. beef was able to maintain top total beef market share with 44 percent. Currently, year over year exports to Japan are 10 percent higher than
the same period in 2019. Another popular feature of the 2020 Beef Cattle Short Course was the Prime Rib Cooking Demo on Facebook Live following the general session on Monday, August 3. The Texas Beef Council’s Russell Woodward and Dr. Davey Griffin, professor and extension meat specialist from Texas A&M, showed more than 4,400 viewers how to make the best smoked prime rib, from choosing the ideal cut to preparation to cooking, ending with a delicious beef masterpiece. “We really appreciated the Texas Beef Council’s presence and educational assistance during this year’s event,” said Jason Cleere, Ph.D., conference coordinator, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service beef cattle specialist and Texas Beef Council Executive Committee member. “The Texas Beef Council has its finger on the pulse of the beef industry, working with the national Beef Checkoff to keep beef on dinner plates everywhere. Their support makes it possible for us to give beef producers reliable, accurate information about what’s going on in the beef industry – here in Texas, throughout the United States and worldwide.” For more information about the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course, visit beefcattleshortcourse.com . Devotional All Things Work Together Well When Truth Is Involved Spreading the Word
By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net
When I think of the truth, I think of a courtroom. Both sides of a problem have to be proven to give forth the truth of a situation and then settled by the law. The truth and the law stand together. Sometimes it seems easier to lie, but afterwards it makes us feel convicted. Why is that? It’s because in a trial, we say those words at the end…”so help me, God.” Yes, He hears and
knows of everything we say. And what does Jesus say about that? Here it is… “So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ “ John 8: 31 – 32. We can take what is said in a court of law and apply it to everyday life. So many times I’ve heard it said, “Oh yes, he’s a man of his word.” That means the person you are hiring to do
a job for you is an honest man. He will do good work and not leave until his work is totally finished. Then we’re free to recommend that person to our friends. So truth and honesty help us and others in all situations. G o d h a s s u rrounded our world in truth. Everything beautiful in our natural surroundings was created as God spoke – and it was done…the world, the seas, mountains, trees, flowers and all growing things were created by the Word that went forth. All nature was spoken into being for our enjoyment and sustenance. So truth surrounds us, every day,
rain or shine. How wonderful! Now for man. He was so complex, he was formed out of dirt in God’s likeness. Then, carefully, from the rib of man, God formed his wife. Once more, for another blessing, God, then and still now, forms those beautiful babies we all treasure. I think it’s good for us to look back to where our families really began, so long ago. We realize how God formed us to just be a family. There were no cars, movies, phones, beds, kitchens, and roads. It was life in the woods. God did give us the cool of the evening to break
the heat of the day. And the best thing of all, He promised He would never leave or forsake His people. And that word stands even for today. Look at these two scriptures He told His people…to Joshua, first: “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.” Joshua 1:5. Now in our New Testament, the writer of Hebrews says this, second: “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money,
being content with what you have; for He, Himself, has said, I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you…” What a glorious promise! Since we, as gentiles, have been grafted into the vine with our Jewish brothers and sisters, we have inherited all the promises of God and Jesus in the whole Bible. God wrote His story (History!) for all Christians to partake of the promises, also. It is His Word – The Truth – for all our life. Can anyone give an “Amen” to that? Yes!
Your House And How It Is Built This is a story of two people…each person builds a house. Each house looks secure in good weather. The thing about a good house, you never know whether it will endure the storm until the storm comes. Each house experiences a storm. This is not a story about the weather, it’s a story about building a house that can withstand the storm. Big difference! Only the storm can reveal how solid your house is. For both people in this parable, there’s a choice to be made. One man chooses to build on sand, and the other chooses solid rock. What kind of foundation are you building on? Why build on
sand? What is sand? Sand is the earth, the things that are accumulated here on the sand or the dirt. “Blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall inherit the earth.” Most people are building on sand, but Jesus calls us to build our lives on Him. Build your life, your marriage, your business and your finances on Him. Don’t merely live for yourself, live for Him. Give yourself to His work and mission in the world. Don’t merely invest your money in the sand of this world, invest in eternity, the eternal kingdom of God. What are the words of Jesus? “I am the way the truth and the life – no one

comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus said He was going to be killed, but then rise from the dead. And He did! Now, He also says one day He’s coming back, and He will! “I go to prepare a place for you... that where I am there you may be also! Jesus invites us to build our lives on Him – the sure foundation. Who wants to build on sand? God, the righteous judge, declared us guilty of our sins, because we have been born into a fallen world. The law of God demanded that our penalty would be an eternity in Hell. Then Christ stepped from behind the judge’s bench and paid our penalty on our behalf. In other
words, He transferred our sins from our account to His account. Our Lord and Savior Jesus reconciled us to His grace on the cross of Calvary, until all of our sins were paid in full and we became the righteousness of Christ, once and for all. We invest our life to accumulate, only to find that the things we have accumulated, have accumulated us. Our thoughts are so consumed with the future, that the present rushes by without even being noticed. The law can never take you out of bondage. recognizing provision for emancipation from our own personal trap. Thus, we build our house on the sand. Seek first the rock then your family will be secure. The law can’t take you out of bondage. It can keep you in the desert. It can never bring you to grace. Eternal structures never crumble. If you live bound to this world you have to live with tomorrow in mind. TEXAS BEEF COUNCIL PRESENTS CHECKOFF UPDATE, PRIME RIB DEMO AT 2020 BEEF CATTLE SHORT COURSE AUSTIN, Texas (August 12, 2020) – The Texas Beef Council presented a Beef Checkoff Update during the annual Beef Cattle Short C o u r s e a t Te x a s A & M University in College Station, held this year on August 3-5. An impressive 1,800 producers registered for this year's virtual Short Course, only slightly down from previous years. “While we certainly missed the one-on-one interaction of previous Beef Cattle Short Courses, we were all very pleased to be a part of this year's event,” said Jason Bagley, vice president of beef resources for the Texas Beef Council. “The Short Course provides an invaluable opportunity to share how we and the national Beef Checkoff continue to grow beef demand with thousands of producers from Texas and other parts of the country. While it's been a challenging year, we're finding very creative ways to keep beef top of mind for consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Bagley and his Texas Beef Council colleagues, Jennifer Matison, vice president of marketing, and Russell Woodward, senior manager of channel marketing, presented
program highlights on both the state and national levels, giving producers information about how their Checkoff dollars are working to promote beef: ? “United We Steak” National Beef Checkoff Campaign. This summertime promotion unites Americans in their shared love of beef on the grill and features 50 hand-carved, state-shaped steaks. To date, the campaign has earned five million impressions in Texas alone, not including social media data. The Texas landing page, which includes a link back to BeefLovingTexans.com, has been viewed more than 15,000 times. ? Te x a s C o n s u m e r Advertising Campaigns and Digital Engagement. Launched in 2019, the “For All Plates of Life” campaign celebrates beef's versatility and Texas diversity. Targeted at older millennial parents in Dallas, Austin, Houston and San Antonio, this awardwinning video and audio campaign has received 291.1 million impressions statewide on various digital platforms. Digital ad buys allowed for more flexibility in timing, platform and content, making it an ideal tactic during the COVID-19 pandemic. A virtual Texas high school culinary educators training conference provided 80 teachers with
beef industry information and cooking demos. Meanwhile “The Raw Truth About Beef” online learning resource has helped more than 1,200 dietitians, chefs and teachers explore the beef industry from pasture to plate. A medical office outreach program has educated medical professionals on beef's positive role in a high-cholesterol patient's diet. ? International promotions with Checkoff partner, U.S. Meat Export Federation. A creative, video-based web campaign promoting different beef cuts in Japan surpassed its goal of reaching one million people in just two weeks. While exports to Japan were down in 2019, U.S. beef was able to maintain top total beef market share with 44 percent. Currently, year over year exports to Japan are 10
percent higher than the same period in 2019. Another popular feature of the 2020 Beef Cattle Short Course was the Prime Rib Cooking Demo on Facebook Live following the general session on Monday, August 3. The Texas Beef Council's Russell Woodward and Dr. Davey Griffin, p r o f e s s o r a n d extension meat specialist from Texas A&M, showed more than 4,400 viewers how to make the best smoked prime rib, from choosing the ideal cut to preparation to cooking, ending with a delicious beef masterpiece. “We really appreciated the Texas Beef Council's presence and educational assistance during this year's event,” said Jason Cleere, Ph.D., conference coordinator, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service beef cattle
head national checkoff program for Texas beef producers and is also the contractor for the Beef Promotion Research Council of Texas (BPRCT), which administers the $1 per head Texas state checkoff program. TBC's mission is to increase beef demand in the state through programs of beef promotion, research and education. TBC also helps fund national and international beef checkoff programs to increase marketing opportunities around the globe. The BPRCT's mission is to improve Texas producer profitability by strengthening and expanding beef demand. The TBC and the BPRCT are directed by a 20member board of cattlemen ### and women representing the state's beef producers. The Texas Beef Council ### (TBC) conducts the $1 per
specialist and Texas Beef Council Executive Committee member. “The Texas Beef Council has its finger on the pulse of the beef industry, working with the national Beef Checkoff to keep beef on dinner plates everywhere. Their support makes it possible for us to give beef producers reliable, accurate information about what's going on in the beef industry – here in Texas, throughout the United States and worldwide.” For more information about the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course, visit beefcattleshortcourse.com. UM Sophomore and Her Steeds Stealing Shows Suzanne Crull is winning top honors in Arabian Horse Association competitions OXFORD, Miss. – Since she was 7, Suzanne Crull has loved horses and horseback riding. As a young adult, the University of Mississippi sophomore and her steeds have become prize-winning regulars in regional and national Arabian Horse Association competitions. The Arabian horse is a breed that originated on the Arabian Peninsula. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most recognizable and oldest horse breeds in the world. A biochemistry major from Magnolia, Texas, Crull owns three purebred Arabians. Ready Aim Afire J, whose barn name is "Red," is her show horse. Her other steeds' names are Valmont and OH Arise. "I find being able to just ride and show my horse to be the most enjoyable part (of competing)," Crull said. "It is very fulfilling and gratifying to have a class where there are no major mistakes and have it be a clean ride in general. "Getting a ribbon is always fun, but just the ability to go into a class and show off my horse is what makes it worth it to me, even if I don't necessarily win." Crull is a thirdgeneration Ole Miss student. Both her grandparents and her father graduated from the university a n d h e r o l d e r s i s t e r, Allison, is a junior linguistics major. "My connection to the school was one of the main reasons I chose it," Crull
said. "And I knew I would have my sister close by." The AHA offers more than 500 competitions for Arabian purebreds; HalfArabians, which must have at least 50 percent Arabian blood and one purebred Arabian parent; and AngloArabian horses, which require a minimum of 25 percent and no more than 75 percent blood from each breed. The competitions range from grassroots schooling shows – local achievement events that qualify riders for regional and national contests – to national championships – which include Youth Nationals, Canadian Nationals, Sport Horse Nationals, Distance Nationals and U.S. Nationals – and distance rides, multiday events that test a horse's condition and stamina, rider intelligence and horsemanship under veterinary supervision on a cross-country trail. "I have gone to Arabian Yo u t h N a t i o n a l s i n Oklahoma City for the past three years and Region 9 in Fort Worth, Texas, for the past two years," Crull said. "I enjoy spending time at them and competing with my horses. My love of horses and the sport has been what keeps pushing me to be better." When she's on campus, Crull can't ride, but her horses continue training in Texas. When home, Crull rides two to four times a week. She has been able to increase her riding time during the COVID-19 pandemic. "While home, I've been
able to manage both my schoolwork and going to the barn by dedicating a certain amount of time each day to those activities," she said. "This year, I most likely will have to pick and choose which qualifying and regional shows I go to in order to not have a conflict with school." Because Crull holds an amateur card, she has competed only in the Junior to Ride, for all riders ages 14-18; Junior Owner to Ride, for owners 18 and under; Amateur to Ride, all ages 18 holding an amateur card; and the Arabian, Half-Arabian and AngloArabian horse categories. Crull and her steeds have swept several divisions, including: * Arabian Country English Pleasure: This is judged on the manners, movement and how willing and smooth the horse is during the ride. * Mounted Native Costume: Judged in part on the manners and costume itself, but mainly on the movement of the horse. * Arabian Side Saddle Equitation: This contest is judged on the manners of the horse as well as the smoothness and gracefulness of the ride. It also is judged in part on how appropriate the attire is. * Arabian Show Hack: The horse is judged on the manners and execution of the gaits, along with the smoothness of transition between each gait and the willingness of the horse. At Youth Nationals, Crull placed in the Top 10
Arabian Mounted Native Costume in 2019 and Top 10 in Arabian English Ladies Side Saddle in 2020. In this year's Region 9 competition, Crull won Reserve Champion in Arabian Show Hack, among several other categories in which she placed in the Top 5. Casey Goslin, Crull's trainer, said she has greatly improved over the past two years of training with him. "When Suzanne came to me, she was a fair rider and very shy," Goslin said. "Over the years, she has become an excellent rider who is much more outgoing and confident. She
didn't know how to ride side saddle very well when she started, but she's really good at it now." As Crull ages out of the youth category and enters adult competitions, she plans to bring at least two horses to next year's nationals. "I just bought OH Arise in order to compete next year in either English Pleasure or Country English Pleasure at the 2021 youth national," Crull said. "I hope that my education from Ole Miss will allow me to continue to support my participation with horses and in the Arabian show world." Crull is the type of
student who is a pleasure to have in a class, said Gerald Rowland, instructional associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry. "Suzanne is intelligent, motivated and hardworking," Rowland said. "She would always take the time to help her classmates during in-class assignments. She is a very caring person that is a pleasure to be around."
