Gas Prices (October 4, 2021) - Texas gas prices have fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.83/g t o d a y, a c c o r d i n g t o GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas p r i c e s i n Te x a s a r e unchanged versus a month ago and stand 97.4 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.52/g today while the most expensive is $3.69/g, a difference of $1.17/g. The lowest price in the state today is $2.52/g while the highest is $3.69/g, a difference of $1.17/g. The national average price of gasoline is unchanged in the last week, averaging $3.18/g today. The national average is unchanged from a month ago and stands $1.01/g higher than a year ago. Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa$2.92/g, down 2.9 cents per gallon from last week's $2.95/g. San Antonio- $2.71/g, unchanged from last week's $2.71/g. Austin- $2.76/g, down 0.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.77/g. "We've seen very little overall movement in gas prices over the last week with prices remaining near their 2021 highs as crude oil prices remain well above $70 on supply concerns and strong global demand," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "With energy in high demand ahead of the winter heating season and a surge in global demand due to COVID-induced imbalances, we're not likely to see a meaningful decline at the pump any time soon, but unfortunately, could see prices holding near these levels for the next few weeks." GasBuddy is the authoritative voice for gas prices and the only source for station-level data spanning nearly two decades. Unlike AAA's once daily survey covering credit card transactions at 100,000 stations and the Lundberg Survey, updated once every two weeks based on 7,000 gas stations, GasBuddy's survey updates 288 times every day from the most diverse list of sources covering nearly 150,000 stations nationwide, the most comprehensive and up-to-date in the country. Buffalo, New York I coined a phrase many seasons ago called the Texans’ two step. The team takes one step forward with new players, coaches, and strategies, yet the team takes two steps backs with their preparation, decisions, and execution. The coaches put the future of the team on the shoulders of a third string rookie quarterback, Davis Mills, who fulfilled our worst expectations with four (4) interceptions and a first half quarterback rating of 0.0 in the humiliating defeat of 40-0. Mills went for eleven (11) completions on twentyone (21) attempts for only eighty-seven (87) yards. The offensive line were man handled with backs getting hit in the b a c k f i e l d . Te x a n s ’ running back Mark Ingram went for thirtyone (31) yards on eight (8) carries. It had been five (5) years since the Houston Texans were shut out and so completely dominated by another NFL team, yet on the soggy field in New York the Texans played sloppy despite the defense gallant efforts in the first half trading touchdowns for field goals. The Houston Texans’ defense resigned in the fourth quarter giving up twenty-one (21) points with a very weak performance in the secondary. The leading critics for the Texans are attacking management, still others are discussing the reward of failure which is top draft picks. All are idle chatter is useless, the bottom line is that these players and coaches have a responsibility to perform their best despite the outside circumstances. They should be accountable which is what we do each week for you. Despite the poor playing and poor production, the Texans are only a game out of the first place in their division and are tied with the Indianapolis Colts with a 1-3 record. In other AFC South division play, the Titans lost to the New York Jets 27-24; the Colts beat the Dolphins 27-17 and the Jaguars had a bye. The Houston Texans will need to shake off the defeat and regroup to take on the New England Patriots in Reliant Stadium this Sunday, so read all about it in your Hometown paper.

Think of squash and it’s easy to imagine cornucopias spilling forth with bright orange gourds hard as gems or sprawling vines soaking in the summer sun, hiding pale yellow and green treasures beneath their prickly soft leaves. Squash refers to five domesticated species w i t h i n t h e greater Cucurbita genus that hails from the Andes and Mesoamerica. The fruits, which vary in size, shape, and color, contain a thick, fibrous flesh and edible rind. They grow on vines, and most can be stored at length after harvesting. What Is the Difference B e t w e e n Wi n t e r a n d Summer Squash? Summer squash varieties are harvested while young, when their soft rinds are completely edible. “Summer” refers to their short shelf life, though many summer squashes are harvested from June through August. Winter squash varieties are harvested in the early months of autumn (any time before temperatures dip and bring frost) and feature firm exterior skin that extend their shelf life throughout the winter, only some of which are edible. Types of Winter Squash Whether dark green or orange flesh, varieties of winter squash run the gamut. * Butternut: As the sweetest variety of winter squash, pear-shaped butternuts are worth every bit of their notoriously tough-to-peel prep. Roast them in half, so you don’t have to bother removing the skin or break it down into smaller sections first, then peel the skin off. * Acorn: Featuring a mild nutty flavor and glossy dark green edible skin, acorn squash has a deep cup, perfect for

stuffing with whole grains or a few pats of butter and a teaspoon of brown sugar. * Delicata: Small, oblong delicatas also go by the name “sweet potato squash,” and are immediately recognizable for their yellow skin with green stripes. The seeds are easy to remove, and the skin is edible, adding a nice crackling chew when roasted. * Kabocha: With a deep green skin and sweet, dark orange flesh like that of a pumpkin or sweet potato, kabocha squash is a Japanese variety sometimes referred to as the “Japanese pumpkin” in the United States. * S w e e t Dumpling: Adorable, pintsized, and streaked with bright orange, sweet dumplings have a sweetness not unlike peakseason corn. Thanks to their size, they work especially well for singleserving preparations. * Hubbard: Hubbards are the zeppelins of the squash realm: large with a hard, bumpy exterior that ranges from pale seafoam green to dark bluish gray. The flavor of Hubbard squash is often compared to pumpkin. They make fantastic hearty soups and work equally well in baked goods like pies or muffins. * Buttercup: With deep blue-green skin and pale white stripes, buttercup squash is much like a thinskinned pumpkin: firm, sweet flesh, and roastable seeds. * Spaghetti: This delicate, pale-yellow squash has a stringy, loose flesh and mild flavor often used to mimic noodles or angel hair pasta. * Sweet Pumpkin: Also known as sugar pumpkins and closely related to the equally versatile Long Island cheese pumpkin, sweet pumpkins are smaller and sweeter than the jack-o’-lantern carving variety, with flesh that’s a perfect candidate for a smooth, velvety—you guessed it—pumpkin pie. They were followed by Chaston Wellman & Damian Williams with another nice limit weighing 11.95 pounds, which landed them in 5th place. Following close behind in 6th place were Jake Hird & Leslie Williams, with 11.90 pounds. All totaled, our

top 3 weights added up to 37.67 pounds, edging out College Station for the Tournament Victory. This is normally the formula for success, having 3 teams in the Top Ten, and this held true this time around. MISD actually had 5 Teams in the Top 10, with reigning Angler of the Year Cade “Super Fly” Lipham coming in 7th with a 5 bass limit of his own, which weighed 11.20 pounds. Newcomers Preston Burch and Andrew Wilson rounded out the Top 10, claiming the 10th spot. The next Tournament

for the combined squad from both Lake Creek and Montgomery High Schools, will be on October 30th at Lake Somerville, where the Te a m w i l l l o o k t o continue their Defense of their Conference and Regional Titles. Transfer to a large bowl. * Step 3 In the same skillet, heat 1 tbsp.oil over mediumhigh. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring frequently, until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the kale, quinoa, and rice to the onions and mushrooms; gently toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper. * Step 5 In a small bowl, toss the lemon zest, crushed red pepper, and the remaining 1 tbsp. oil to coat. “WE TEXANS HAVE A PLAN AND A WAY-OF-LIFE HERE, WISE-UP LEARN IT OR MOVE ON, PART 5!!!” Walden Happenings By Doc Fennessy The opinions expressed in this editorial do not necessarily reflect those of MCN.

This is the 5th Part of the Texas Series, aimed at educating all you newcomers streaming into Texas; and those who might have missed it the first time or need a refresher course. THE FAMOUS TEXAS CHICKEN RANCH!!! “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas!!!" T h e F a m o u s Te x a s “Chicken Ranch” in La Grange, Fayette County, made famous by the Broadway musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” was perhaps the oldest continuously running brothel in the nation. Institutionalized prostitution in La Grange can be traced back to 1844, when a widow, "Mrs. Swine," brought three young women from New Orleans and settled in a small hotel near the saloon. Mrs. Swine became the first madam and began a tradition of interaction with the community and local lawmen that lasted almost 130 years. She and the girls and women who worked for her carried on a lucrative It’s Getting Time to Lay in the Wood for Winter! business, using the hotel lobby for entertaining and a room upstairs for services, until the Civil War, when she and a faithful prostitute named Tillie were run out of

town as Yankees and traitors. After the war, prostitution continued to operate in conjunction with the saloons in La Grange, but no official records were kept. By the end of the n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y, prostitution had moved out of the hotels and into a redlight district on the banks of the Colorado River. There Miss Jessie Williams (born Faye Stewart) bought a small house soon after her arrival from Waco in 1905. She continued the custom set by her predecessor of good relations with the law and ran the only respectable house on the banks of the Colorado River; she admitted politicians and lawmen but excluded drunkards. Through her connections she learned of an impending crusade against the red-light district, and sold the house she owned in Waco, and bought two dwellings with eleven acres outside of the city limits of La Grange and two blocks from the road to Houston. This became the location of the Chicken Ranch. In 1917, two sisters arrived at the house and were taken in and promoted to "middlemanagement" positions by Miss Jessie. They were in charge of public relations and sending packages and letters to local boys fighting in World War I. One of the sisters eventually married an older, wealthy customer and moved to San Antonio, where she became, as one author says, “a beloved benefactor and patron of the

arts.” The other sister stayed in her middlemanagement position until her death. As the war ended and America entered the twenties, automobiles made the establishment accessible to many more customers. New prostitutes came and necessitated more rooms and new furniture. The rooms were simply built onto the main house in a haphazard fashion as needed; a style that continued until the closing of the place. Miss Jessie stayed on good terms with the sheriff, Will Lossein, who visited every evening to pick up gossip and get information on criminals who had visited the whorehouse and bragged of their exploits. Many crimes in La Grange were solved in this way. While the sheriff kept a tight grip on criminals, Miss Jessie ruled the house with a firm hand. Nothing exotic was allowed, and none of the bedroom doors had locks on them. Miss Jessie would walk the halls, and if she heard a customer giving one of her girls a hard time, she would chase him out of the room and house with an iron rod and perhaps never admit him again. As the Great Depression hit and the economy fell, Miss Jessie was forced to lower her prices Though initially she still had plenty of clients, as times grew harder, customers were not so plentiful, and the girls grew hungry. Miss Jessie therefore began the "poultry standard" of

It’s Getting Time to Lay in the Wood for Winter! Weekly Column by Doyle Driver doyledriver@yahoo.com We d i d n ’ t h a v e a fireplace when I was a boy, but we had a wood burning stove, that kept our living room warm during late fall and winter. Living on a farm with a pasture we had plenty Mesquite to last the colder months of the year just for the taking. When we needed firewood, Daddy hitched a team of mules to an old wagon, and we headed to the pasture to load up with all the Mesquite needed for winter. Mesquite burns slower, and gives off more heat than most woods. The marvelous scent a burning Mesquite log gave off was almost spellbinding! It enhanced the enjoyment of cold winter nights! The fragrance of a Mesquite log burning in an old potbellied stove could be sensed for quite a distance, and the essence seemed to extend a welcome on a cold winter’s eve. Before tending the livestock, Daddy usually laid a couple of large logs in the stove. While he milked cows I fetched bundles of sorghum for the livestock. The aroma of Mesquite smoke rising skyward from our chimney was wonderful. Many years later, we enjoyed the wonderful aroma of a burning Mesquite log in the fireplace at Doris and B. R’s. Doris would make Tuna sandwiches, or we’d join them for Christmas breakfast of Quail, biscuits, steaming hot coffee and homemade cream gravy. The fireplace at “The Foster’s” always had a large Mesquite log smoldering during late fall and winters. For many years, their friend Jack Farrow sent the

Foster’s a large load of Mesquite from his Meridian ranch. Those logs kept their home warm and fragrant many winters. When we moved to Conroe in 1972, the first thing I did, after getting the furniture placed and pictures hung, was to order a full cord of cured Oak. In those days, a full cord of wood, delivered and stacked, was forty-five dollars. I could scarcely wait for the first cold spell, to begin using our wood! Come the first day temperatures hit mid seventies, our fire was lighted. Within the hour we were sweltering in an overheated den, but with air conditioner laboring to remove excess heat—we survived. We all enjoyed a blazing oak log fire, a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows roasted over the open fire. Later that winter, we had the first snow Conroe had had in years, and our fireplace kept us as warm as toast. We moved to Sherman, Texas a couple of years later, and again one of the first things we did was order a cord of Red Oak for the winter. Winter was not a really cold one, so the wood lasted all winter with some leftover. When we transferred back to Houston, I gave the leftover wood to the fellow from whom we’d bought the house. Almost to the day, a year later, we moved back into River Plantation. Again we purchased another cord of firewood. This time it lasted a couple of years, and when it was used up, we bought a gas log. Since then we’ve never fired up another Oak or Mesquite

log in our fireplace. In fact, we haven’t even fired up our gas log fireplace in almost ten years. Many years ago, the swallows, or some other kind of birds, decided not to return to Capistrano—but instead decided to visit the Driver Hacienda. For years it was a game played with the insistent birds. The instant I heard them, I‘d light up the gas logs, and wait for the frantic sound of fluttering of wings exiting the chimney. This game went on for months! Finally, I had our yardman block the entrance to our fireplace. Since then, no birds! Also, no fires in winter. Never mind, we’ve blocked the front of our fireplace with a useless sofa, and besides, who enjoys a fire without the remarkable aroma of Mesquite, Oak or Hickory fetching childhood memories of days gone by! Oh, Boots and I still enjoy the bouquet of aromas, permeating our neighborhood by smoke from those wood-burning fireplaces. There are still some, who like a young man of forty-plus years ago, just can’t wait until a cold spell arrives, to light off the first log! God bless you! We enjoy the fragrance coming from those burning logs! They arouse childhood memories, and visions of family bonding as we gathered around a roaring fire sharing popcorn, hot chocolate and smores, on a bitterly cold winters night! charging "one chicken for one screw." Soon chickens were everywhere, and the establishment became known as the Chicken Ranch. The girls were never hungry. Miss Jessie supplemented the income by selling surplus chickens and eggs. The economy began to turn around as the Civilian Conservation Corps began construction of Camp Swift near La Grange, and the shortage of men and money declined. The establishment used the same public-relations tactics in World War II as in the First World War, and the ranch began an economic recovery from the depression. As the war ended, Miss Jessie was confined to a wheelchair by arthritis. Battleship Texas receives $500,000 grant Work continues on the Battleship Texas. The National Park Service in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services, recently announced that Battleship Texas has been awarded a $500,000 grant for the repair and restoration of her superstructure through the Save America's Treasures grant program. The superstructure is defined as the structures above the main deck, other than the ship's five 14" gun turrets. This is a major piece of additional work that the Battleship Texas Foundation has been wanting to accomplish while the ship remains in dry dock.

This week, the Senate Select Committee on Redistricting gave initial approval to the newly drawn Texas Senate and State Board of Education plans. Senate Bill 7, the SBOE map, was unanimously approved by the committee and Senate Bill 4, the Senate map, was approved 12-2. Now the bills will head to the Senate 5. Resolution on school floor for a vote by the full bus driver shortage set for Senate. If approved, these hearing maps will head over to the House for their approval. Over the past several To learn more about the years, East Texas superin-

tendents have continually brought up the same issue with me - the school bus driver shortage. This shortage exists due to a multitude of factors including federal government regulations. Several years ago, Congress changed the requirements for Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs). While these changes are appropriate for long-haul truckers and other commercial drivers, they also covered school bus drivers who have to have a CDL under federal law. These new requirements ask bus drivers to be able to go under the hood of a vehicle and have skills outside the scope of their work. Because Congress raised the standards for CDLs, many licensees have chosen not to renew their licenses when it expires because the process or the test is difficult. The test also is a barrier to entry for possible new drivers. During this special session, I filed Senate Concurrent Resolution 3 calling on Congress to address the school bus driver shortage. This resolution asks Congress to pass legislation that would allow states to make their own standards for school bus drivers.

September Market Review A weekly column by Kent Pendleton

September Market Review Markets prefer clarity – or at least as close a facsimile as they can get. Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve seen how markets can push through uncertainty, up to a certain point. September, however, brought a stack of compounding uncertainties, combining to end the S&P 500’s seven-month bull streak. To understand what caused this downward tilt, point to these four Cs: * China: The potential default of Evergrande, the Chinese real estate giant * Congress: Brinkmanship over the federal debt ceiling and pending legislation * Commodities: The rapid oil price hike to values not seen since 2018 * COVID-19: The

continuing surge, even as global lockdowns are at a low point Still, it’s hard to keep a strong market down, especially as time moves forward and experience overwrites expectations. There are good reasons to see the strength underneath this September dip, and to see it in context. For the year, the S&P 500 is up 14% and about 5% below recent record highs. For the quarter, the S&P 500 is up less than 1%. In other areas: * Supply chain difficulties have lasted longer and have been more severe than anticipated and will likely continue into the early part of 2023. * Investors continued to demonstrate a willingness to buy after a pullback, suggesting an underlying confidence in the economy. * Inflation forecasts for 2021 have moved higher, though Federal Reserve officials still view much of the increase as transitory. * The Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee signaled its intent to wind down its $120 billion per month of long-term securities purchases, a pandemic

response. More clarity is expected at the group’s November policy meeting. The bottom line: Caution is recommended amid a stack of smaller uncertainties, but this m o n t h ’s b l i p d i d n ’ t produce a good reason to lose confidence in the longer term. Devotional GOD IS FOR US - NOT AGAINST US AND WILL BE WITH US FOREVER Spreading the Word

By Gail J. Box Gailbox@consolidated.net

If you just read this title and still are sad over what you may have recently done or said, then this week’s writing is just what you’ve been waiting to read. Let’s think for a moment about little Joseph, who was one of 11 brothers and was favored by his father, Jacob. So the brothers, out of jealousy, threw Joseph into a pit to be sold to the

next caravan of Midianite traders going into Egypt. Many other things happened to Joseph while he was in Egypt as a slave, but he never forgot God. The Lord gave him favor to interpret many of Pharaoh’s dreams but Joseph was always quick to give the Lord credit for the interpretations. Joseph also went gathering food for a great famine which God sent to all the land of Egypt. There was so much grain there that the Bible says: “The people of all

the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph because the famine was severe in all the earth. Genesis 41:57. Later on, Joseph was reunited with his brothers and his dear father. So how does this pertain to us today? Actually, I read a recent billboard along a highway. It said only these few words: “God is not mad at you.” Those words made me think of the many people who may think, because of this pandemic, that God is

actually mad at them because so many loved ones have passed away. God says this in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” And from the New Testament, this verse comes forth: “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said,

All throughout the Bible, God assures us of His love for us. Else why would He send His Son to make a way for us to believe and receive that kind of self-less love and live forever with Him? OUR GOD is truly AMAZING!
