"As motorists turn their attention to Thanksgiving, they certainly can be thankful for the decline in gasoline prices, which has now reached eight straight weeks. GasBuddy counts 11 states where average prices are below $3 per gallon, with several more to join this week. Even in California, the nation's most expensive gasoline average will fall below $5 in the next 48 hours," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "Gasoline demand has struggled in recent weeks, falling not only due to the seasonal nature, as Americans drive less as the weather gets colder, but it appears there may be some economic headwinds entering the equation as well." GasBuddy will be releasing its Thanksgiving Travel Survey results and gas price forecast on Tuesday, November 13. SOURCE GasBuddy

The Madeley Ranch Elementary Choir performed during the schools Veterans Day Celebration on November 9th

by MCN contributing writer, Ruben Borjas Jr The atmosphere at several Montgomery school campuses last week was electrifying as they welcomed Veterans and thanked them for their Service in keeping our Country Free. Since Ve t e r a n s D a y f e l l o n S a t u r d a y t h i s y e a r, Madeley Ranch Elementary, and Montgomery Junior High, brilliantly scheduled their Veterans Day ceremonies, Thursday and Friday, respectively, so as not to o v e r l a p e a c h o t h e r. Allowing for Veterans to attend multiple events without having to pick and choose. And the inclusion of Prayer In Schools this year, thanks to the Texas Legislature’s new law passed this past regular session, was most evident and welcomed by the students, staff, attendees, and Veterans alike. Madeley Ranch Elementary welcomed Veterans to their campus

cafeteria, for a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee. On entering the gymnasium, where the ceremony was to be held, there was another flurry of emotions that were stirred in the Veterans, perhaps causing a teardrop or two. The entire student body stood and clapped, as Veterans marched in and took their seats. You couldn’t help but feel that this was a true ‘Welcome Home’ for the Vietnam Veterans, who were robbed of such ceremony all those decades ago. Lieutenant General Steven Hummer, was the k e y n o t e s p e a k e r, a n d recognized all Veterans in the crowd, including three World War II Veterans with us, Wallace Shuck, 98; James W. Williams, 97; and Jimmy McDaniel, 95, all of whom served Our Country with distinction during its greatest time of need. “Our freedoms have been won on battlefields on which the American

military fights,” said Lt. Gen Hummer, the highest ranking military officer in M o n t g o m e r y C o u n t y. “Our freedom of speech, of religion, of the press, and freedom of assembly, are all won by our military and our Veterans.” The MJH ceremony included touching tributes to the Veterans and their Service Branches with a Musical Military Salute and Service Flag presentation. The school also conducted several Veterans Day contests for best Poster representation of Veterans Day, won by students Jackson Williams, and James Riley, as well as an Essay Contest. “I just like that we have a day in school where we are able to honor our Veterans.” said Olivia Hummel, 14, the VFW Post 12223, Patriot’s Pen Essay contest winner for MJH. “I felt that my school did a very good job putting something to let Veterans know we are grateful for them.”

By winning the Sam Rayburn event this past S a t u r d a y, To m b a l l Memorial broke away from the logjam of four teams tied for second place in the Divsion going into the event. The choir performed patriotic songs as well as Our National Anthem, as students relayed America's involvement in conflicts since its founding, as the choir rested their voices between songs. Veterans of each service were recognized by the students and teachers, as the entire student body stood, turned around, and waved to the Veterans in appreciation of their service to Our Nation. Montgomery Junior High held a more elaborate celebration for Veterans. And just walking into the building, it was a scene reminiscent of the Anheuser-Busch 2005 Super Bowl commercial, ‘Thank You.’ Dozens of MJH students stood and clapped as Veteran after Veteran walked through the friendly foyer run of the gauntlet; no doubt creating a goosebump of two, on their way to the

By: James M. Rankin, Sportswriter Montgomery County News Cincinnati, Ohio: Wow, it was another cliffhanger finish for the Houston Texans as they faced a formidable contender, the Cincinnati Bengals on the road. Many pundits and fans feared a hangover from the adrenaline driven game last week against the Buccaneers to obtain the victory in the final minute. However, this team is transforming before our very eyes. Although there were some turnovers, the Texans were able to pull together back-to-back victories, beating the Bengals 30-27 in the closing seconds of the game. The Houston Texans made some quick moves this back week, and hired a much-traveled place kicker Matt Ammendola, who has played with numerous NFL franchises. However, he was the star of the show as he booted the winning thirty-eight (38) yard goal to

The Texans made a major improvement in the running game with Devin Singletary who had an outstanding thirty (30) carries for one hundred and fifty (150) yards along with a rushing touchdown. It had been seventeen (17) games since a Houston Texan running back gained over a hundred (100) yards in a game. Defensively, the two standouts were Safety DeAndre Houston-Carson with seven (7) solo tackles and an interception and Defensive Tackle Shelton Rankins who had his best game of the year with five (5) solo tackles and three (3) sacks. He was on fire all day long. Texans' defensive back Shaquill Griffin had an interception in the endzone

to stop the Bengals' comeback. The Texans' rookie quarterback showed everyone that he was human with a fumble and interception. However, he never lost the faith and told his Head Coach, “I got your back!” Despite the turnovers, he put in another MVP performance with twenty-three (23) completions on thirty-nine (39) attempts for three hundred and fifty-six (356) with a touchdown pass wide receiver Tank Dell. Also, Stroud had a rushing score early in the fourth quarter as he galloped for an eight (8) yards touchdown. C.J. has shown in the past two weeks that he can engineer a lastminute drive as well as any quarterback in the league. He continues to grow and mature into a franchise quarterback. Weekly Columns The Ins And Outs Of Nonqualified Deferred Compensation A weekly column by Kent Pendleton

A versatile tool that can help enhance the benefits package you offer your employees. What is an NQDC plan? While nonqualified deferred compensation (NQDC) plans can vary slightly from one another, they generally act as an agreement between employers and employees to defer a portion of the employees' annual income to a future date – that could be one year later or once the employee retires. Deferred compensation isn't counted as earned income, so it's not subject to taxes. Who does an NQDC plan serve best? NQDC plans are utilized by companies with a need to recruit, retain and reward key employees. They were created as a counteraction to the cap

that high-earning employees face when it comes to government-sponsored retirement plans. Highly compensated employees are often limited in retirement savings due to federal legislative limits. Participating in an NQDC plan can allow high earners to accrue additional pre-tax savings and tax-deferred growth. Employers can harness the tax deferring benefits of NQDC plans as an incentive to entice and retain top talent. Nonqualified plans also offer more flexibility than qualified retirement plans in that savings can be accessed before an employee reaches retirement. While NQDCs are a popular component of a retirement planning strategy, deferred compensation can also be used in a variety of other situations: toward education expenses, to cover a home remodel, or even to supplement income during an extended period off from work. That said,

nonqualified plans don't simply function like a savings account. They require the employee to pick the distribution date they will receive their funds in advance. The main benefit here for employers i s t h a t i t a ff o r d s t h e freedom to offer plans to a more specific subset of employees, such as higher earners. SECURE 2.0 Act changes The SECURE 2.0 Act is a recent regulatory update designed to encourage more employers to offer retirement plan benefits through practices such as automatically enrolling eligible employees and allowing catch-up contributions, among other measures. Most highly compensated employees take advantage of catch-up contributions in their qualified retirement plans, but things are about to change. Starting in 2024, if the employee has income of at least $145,000 for the year,

the catch-up contributions under 401(k), 403(b) or governmental 457(b) plans must be treated as a Roth contribution, which is a change to the current pretax contribution. That means these funds will be saved as after-tax dollars, no longer reducing taxable income but allowing for tax-free withdrawals in the future. Note that the $145,000 income threshold will also be indexed for inflation in future years. An NQDC plan gives highly compensated employees the option to defer an unlimited amount of their income on both a pre-tax and tax deferred basis – providing greater flexibility with distributions. For people with access to a nonqualified deferred compensation plan there's a bigger question: Is it more beneficial to contribute the catch-up amount to the NQDC plan for the pretax deferral or a Roth contribution to the qualified retirement plan? Everyone's circumstances

are different and we can offer guidance for these complex problems to help you decide what is best for you. What can business leaders do to prepare? Recent legislative changes mean that, for companies and business leaders, now is a great time to review your benefit packages. If an NQDC plan is the right fit for your needs, it's worth considering implementing one to help highly compensated employees effectively prepare for retirement. Before you begin to leverage the flexibility NQDC plans offer, it's important to weigh your options. NQDC plans can be a useful tax deferral tool, but there's a strong likelihood that employees who qualify have maxed out their employersponsored retirement plan contributions. Therefore, offering different investment options from those typically found in a standard retirement plan can diversify employee

retirement holdings and differentiate your NQDC plan as an enticing benefit. Mortgage rates hit their highest point in over two decades this year. There. I said it. But that's not the end of the story. Here's why. Even though interest rates are higher than many of us would like, you can still go after your homeownership dreams and save on a mortgage. Here's what I'm sharing with prospective homeowners this November. 1) Consider an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM). An ARM is a great option for a monthly payment that's lower than the payments available with fixed-rate loans or for buyers convinced rates will drop by the time the introductory period ends. Keep in mind that a year from now, some experts are predicting 30-year rates will be around 5.25%

and 15-year rates around 4.875%. 2) Pay for points to buy down the rate. If you have extra funds at the time of purchase, you can pay for mortgage points. With mortgage points, you pay a percentage of the loan upfront in exchange for a lower interest rate — and a slightly lower monthly payment. Just make sure you calculate your break-even point. If rates drop and you can refinance before you hit the break-even point, buying down your rate may not be worth it. 3) Work on your credit score. If time is on your side before applying for a mortgage, improve your credit by paying bills on time, lowering your credit utilization (using under 30% of your total credit line!), reducing credit card debt, and addressing credit report errors. In the long run, a higher credit score will save you on your mortgage. 4) Shop around. Always, always, always

Opinion / Editorial Ruben Vivek vs The GOP Establishment Borjas Jr, Columnist Ruben’s Montgomery Musings This column may upset some, and maybe make some see the light, but it needed to be written. Vivek Ramaswamy’s performance in the Republican debate last Wednesday was magnifique. It was a no holds barred display of what a STRONG GOP candidate should look like. R a m a s w a m y ’ s wordsmithing was a

masterclass on how to win. And he was right. The GOP Establishment are a bunch of losers, content with their second class political status assigned to them by the Socialist Media, Democrats, Big Donors, and the Republican leadership themselves. As long as the Republican Establishment gets paid, they don’t mind losing. And I wonder how

many of these second politicians we have in Montgomery County? I remember my mentor Rush Limbaugh railing against GOP Representative Bob Michel, who was House Minority Leader from 1981 to 1995. For 14 years, this man never challenged the Democrats or their media. Bob just took his place as the second class politician he was, and that was that, until Newt Gingrich stepped up. Where are all the combat veterans in Congress saying “Screw this, what are they gonna do, send me back to Iraq or Afghanistan?” Or better yet, “I’ll take point on this.” Why do they have to be sponges to the GOP Establishment? We know it’s for the easy money as compared to their words. But when you dig deep, those same top donors that our sponges soak into, donate to the Democrats equally or in numerous examples even more. And all our sponges have to do is sit down and not say a word. Instead, they should be taking clinics from Jordan Peterson, Pierre Poilievre, Kari Lake, and Ramasawmy on how to conduct themselves in a debate, or in front of the media. Concentrate on your voice, get out there and stomp the ground. Make people want to donate and vote for you because of your words and deeds. Yes, easy money comes from the Fat GOP Establishment wallet, but it entails the loss of your dignity, and your voice. And makes them look even wimpier than Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell and GOP Chair Ronna McDaniel. When I shake a man’s hand, I squeeze the hell out

of it. They know then I mean business. I don’t want to shake a politician's soft hand, knowing that they accept reach-arounds. Dammit, if you are gonna lead, then LEAD!!! If not, get the hell out of the way. I want outspoken leaders with an effective voice. Ramasawmy has that voice that can run rings around, fat lards, 5 inch heels, liars, and ineffective leaders in the room. In examining the GOP E s t a b l i s h m e n t , Vi v e k Ramaswamy has more cojones than all of them combined. The only person who exhibited any confidence on the stage that night was Ramaswamy. Vivek was on fire last Wednesday. Tim Pool, from Timcast, reported that Romney McDaniel, called him an a*shole, and stated that Ramaswamy was not gonna get one cent of GOP funds. And that asks the question. Are GOP funds solely McDaniel’s? She could’ve helped state races. She just didn’t want to do it. The Democrat Chair helped with state races, and they won. Ronna’s rebuff against Ramaswamy was fruitless, and she never really addressed the question of her accountability. So unless you kiss McDaniel’s ass, you stand no chance of being accepted by her ‘kneel to me’ attitude to play in her line of politics. And I wonder, how many Montgomery County Lip Prints are on Ronna’s Derriere? Ramaswamy was right to call for her resignation. McDaniel is a Romney, which is Scottish for “political loser as long as I profit.” And it tells, since

she hasn’t won anything, and doesn’t seem to mind losing. She didn’t care about the losses in this year’s election. If she worked for Trump, she would have been fired. McDaniel’s performance reviews, which she does herself, are all marked “Above Expectations,” and the GOP Establishment just looks the other way. Speaking out for ‘Right’ like Vivek did in his performance. That tells me more about him than any of the candidates on stage who exhibited lambful silence. They looked amongst themselves as if Ramaswamy was in trouble with the teacher, and was gonna get paddled. How Chris Christie thinks he has a chance is beyond me. His ‘never miss a meal’ attitude showed in the deficit of his girth. His stomach never shuts down. Ron DeSantis, who lied to his state that he would not run for President, and on top of that, he betrayed Donald Trump. Whoever his advisors are, they should all be fired. He had no business in this race until 2028, and now he’s ruined that. GOP leaders in Florida have sent him a letter to drop and quit embarrassing their state. Nikki Haley, who has the defense contractors in her skirt pocket, will never turn down a war she profits from. Tim Scott, who, if he exhibited Ramaswamy's flair, confidence, and independence, might do well for himself, yet he still insists on getting the teachers' approval. You’d think he, of all people, would know how to play ‘the dozen’. I doubt if he’s ever heard of the game. And Trump’s Brutus, former Vice President Mike

Pence, who didn't have a snowball’s chance to begin with, has finally had that snowball melt. He went out saying, “This is not my time.” Well buddy, it was never your time. Traitor. It is obvious that Donald Trump needs to be the Republican Nominee. He means business. And The World needs business. Everywhere you look around The World, you can see closed shops. All related to Bidenomics, and killer inflation. And it's purposefully done by the Democrats to create chaos and make us all poor. Thank you Cloward-Piven. Trump’s economy had The World in a good place. I just watched a short documentary on Java Discover on YouTube, about Lebanon, and how prosperous they were during the Trump years, and now under Biden, as their currency has lost over 90% of its value, it’s essentially a bankrupt state. The World really does need Trump. It needs some sort of gainful employment to keep it out of the violence of war. Vivek Ramaswamy needs to be part of the Administration, perhaps even Vice-President. The White House needs businessmen running it, not bought and paid for politicians. It’s hard to believe how the GOP Establishment willingly throws winning away, but they do. Their candidates are boring as hell. None are uplifting, and makes you want to listen more. Vivek Ramaswamy at least makes a convincing case of it, and against any Socialist Democrat candidate; he can run them into the ground.

Letter to the Editor: Tuesday's Election Shows Montgomery County Stands by Its Commitment to an Equitable Future! Montgomery County made history this year with Jamila H. Winder’s appointment to the County Commission, marking her as the first Black woman in this role. Her subsequent victory in the general election is not just about breaking barriers; it reflects our community's unwavering commitment to an inclusive future. This election wasn’t simply a procedure; it was a powerful statement of our collective values. Commissioner Winder's resounding win with over 152,000 votes and Neil Makhija's success as the first Asian American County Commissioner in Pennsylvania signal a new chapter for Montgomery County — one where diversity in leadership isn't an exception but the norm. Our votes echoed a clear message: MontCo is ready for representatives who embody the diversity of

the community they serve. It’s a testament to our belief in equitable representation and our trust in Winder and Makhija's vision and capabilities. Even amid the campaign's challenges, our county stood strong, not swayed by the noise but guided by the values of equality and unity. Our turnout and the decisive victories are pledges made real, ensuring our governance reflects our community. Looking ahead, these election results are not the finish line but milestones. They underscore our dedication to cultivating a home for all, where leadership is as diverse as those it represents. It's about continuing the momentum, nurturing a future where every resident sees themselves in the faces of those elected. Montgomery County has spoken: We're more than a collection of individuals; we're a community united in action and spirit, champion-

ing an equitable future. Let's maintain this course, proving that our values are not just words but actions we live by every day. Travel Adventures with Arthur Charleston, South Carolina

During our 2 year break from cruising, one of the cities we traveled to was Charleston, South Carolina. Downtown Charleston, both beautiful and historic, is located on a peninsula surrounded by the Ashley River and Cooper River, both of which flow into Charleston

mouthwatering Lowcountry cuisine are just a few of the reasons why Charleston SC is one of America's favorite destinations. Charleston is well known as the place where the Civil War started, when confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Today, the fort is a popular tourist attraction, only accessible by a short ferry ride from downtown or from Patriots Point, which is across the harbor from Downtown in Mount Pleasant. Fort Sumter has authentic cannons and munitions as well as most of the original structures. Another historical fort is Fort Moultrie, located on

Harbor, then into the Atlantic Ocean. Historic Antebellum Mansions, Civil War sites, year-round festivals, pristine beaches, barrier islands, and

Sulivan's Island. The area is home to over 1,400 historic structures, with an unparalleled collection of 18th and 19thcentury architecture. Built

of brick, stucco, or clapboard, many of these structures are Charleston “single houses,” one room wide, with a gable end to the street and tiered piazzas. Others are plantation style houses. Architectural styles include Georgian, R e g e n c y, F e d e r a l , Adamesque, Classical Revival, Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic Revival, and Queen Anne, among others. The district also contains many outbuildings (stables, carriage houses, kitchen buildings), many of which have been extensively altered to accommodate modern needs. When traveling to Mount Pleasant from Charleston, you will cross the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge, which is the 3rd longest cable-stayed bridge in the western hemisphere. Mount Pleasant is home to the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, and it is a must see when visiting the area. The USS Yo r k t o w n , a h i s t o r i c aircraft carrier from WWII, is the main attraction along w i t h t h e U S S L a ff e y destroyer and the USS

Clagamore submarine. There are many retired military aircraft and vehicles on display, as well as many hands-on history lessons. Not far from downtown are pristine white-sand beaches. Folley Beach, Sullivan Island, and Isle of Palms are some of the more popular beach destinations. There are many barrier islands surrounding the area which are accessible by boat and have beautiful, natural views of the Atlantic. One place we really enjoyed was a boat tour from Isle of Palms to Boneyard beach, located on one of the barrier islands. There we saw the importance of these islands protecting the mainland and was evident by the

weathered trees and untouched beaches. There are hundreds of great restaurants in the area, but our favorite place to eat was at Shem Creek, where both the Saltwater Cowboys and Waters Edge Seafood were awesome. While eating on the patio, you can watch the fishing boats come in and go out as well as watch the dolphins play in the creek. Another great restaurant is Fleet Landing Restaurant and Bar in the downtown area, which also sits overlooking the water. Charleston is has a cruise terminal that offers cruises to the Bahamas and some Bermuda cruises. They also offer river style cruise from Charleston to Amelia Island, Florida,

which travels down the intracostal waterways. The Port of Charleston has opted not to renew its contract with Carnival Cruise lines, so after 2024 there may not be as many cruise options for travelers from South Carolina. Charleston has much to offer for a wide variety of different vacation personalities. There are many different activities for everyone in the family. From beaches combing to fishing, to learning American history. It is also a great destination for foodies or relaxing and enjoying the southern charm the city has to offer. Community Veteran Of The Week: Darrell May By: Ruben Borjas Jr, MCN Contributing Writer This week’s Veteran is a God Loving and wonderful family man. Darrell May, is a Navy Veteran. After graduation, he further trained at the Av i a t i o n E l e c t r i c i a n School in Millington,

Tennessee. After that, he further trained again, this time at the Advanced Aircrew Training School, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was then assigned to Pensacola again, this time to the staff of Admiral John “Jack” Fetterman, Jr, who was Chief of Naval Education and Training for the Navy, and Naval Air Station Pensacola Air Operations. May’s duties there were to see plane repairs, as well as preventive maintenance was completed. He also

Is Liberty ever finished? No. This park will go on.” The judge vehemently reminded the crowd that the park will not disappear. The names on The Line will never fade, as he resoundingly stated that the VMP is a Memorial for Time. The featured speaker,

Darrell also had loadmaster duties, ensuring that cargo and naval personnel were within the weight and balance limits of the plane’s capacity. completed his honorable service in February 1994. After service May served as a railroad engineer, and now oversees operations with the Poplar Business Park. He is also caretaker to the ‘The Lone Star Honor Flight Veterans Group,’ where Veterans meet every Wednesday morning to fellowship, and breakfast together. Good Luck Darrell, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Veterans of the Week’.

The New Veterans Memorial Park and Information Center to be located in Conroe those years experienced unimaginable mental and physical cruelties, in an effort to extract confessions and information. Colonel Ray’s resistance to the enemy called upon the greatest of inner strengths to survive his ordeal. He is undoubtedly the greatest soldier Montgomery County has to offer. “This is a great day to remember that Freedom is not Free,” said Judge Wayne Mack. “We have the great Freedoms and Liberty that we have in Our Nation because of Veterans.” Following the ceremony,

attendees split between the Groundbreaking for the new Education & Visitors Center, and viewing of the new Panel VIII, where the Veterans who were nominated for Veterans Day, had their names placed. “Today is exciting and a Celebration of Our Veterans,” said MCVMC Executive Director, Elizabeth Woods. “We are glad that the Veterans get to see the beginning stages of our new Education & Visitors Center, so when they come back on Memorial Day, they will be able to see the completed building.”
