San Antonio- $2.55/g, up 9.3 cents per gallon from last week's $2.46/g. Austin- $2.62/g, up 14.1 cents per gallon from last week's $2.48/g. "After 13 straight weeks of decline, average gasoline prices have edged higher due to optimistic comments from the Fed on cutting interest rates in 2024, coupled with Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, boosting concerns of a disruption to global shipping, including oil shipments," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "For now, the price of gasoline has already jumped, but could ease slightly this week ahead of the New Year. For now, I'm optimistic that we may still have a chance of seeing the first $2.99 national average since 2021 sometime before spring arrives. We'll have the full details on what we expect for gasoline and diesel prices in 2024 later this week. Hopefully motorists will be able to celebrate a New Year with good news at the pump!" by MCN contributing writer, Ruben Borjas Jr CONROE, TX – After a 41 year career with Montgomery County, 39 of which are with the county Veterans Service Office, Kay Lee will officially step down in her role as the county’s service officer at year’s end. Lee started with Montgomery County in 1982, with the county parks department, and was even laid off for a short period after county budget cuts. Kay joined the Veterans Service Office in 1985 as a file clerk, of which she found out there was no filing system, so she took it upon herself to create a system which is still in use today. “Every single time I can help a Veteran get the benefits they deserve has Community............2, 3, 4, 8 always been the best Commentary...............2, 3, 4, 5 reward for me,” said Lee. 12.21.23 around 5pm, a burglary of a vehicle occurred in the Gringos’ p a r k i n g l o t a t Va l l e y Ranch. Pct. 4 Deputies working the #SafeShopper program were on scene in minutes and began the investigation. Deputies canvassed the area, did not locate the suspect vehicle, but received good information from a CCTV camera at the business. Later that evening, the victim of the burglary was able to use the “find by iPad” function, which showed its location to be on Needham Rd in Porter, TX. Upon making contact at the residence, Deputies were met by a female at the door, identified as Jacqueline Polanco, a 27 years of age from Porter, TX. The suspect vehicle, registered to Ramon Gallegos Jr., 25 years of age from Houston, TX, was also found at the location. Gallegos, who was discovered to be Polanco's boyfriend, had active misdemeanor and felony warrants for his arrest and Polanco herself was on bond for a recent arrest in Harris County for Hindering/Apprehension of a Felon. As the investigation Polanco misled Deputies again about Gallegos's presence at the residence, resulting in her being charged again for Hindering/Apprehension and placed in custody. Unfortunately, Gallegos managed to evade arrest by slipping out of a rear bedroom window. During the operation, Deputies successfully recovered stolen property not only from the Gringo’s vehicle burglary but also from other incidents spanning from Houston to College Station. Efforts are underway to identify victims of the additional burglaries. At the time of the media release, Gallegos is at still large, but will soon be in custody, facing additional charges from Montgomery County, Harris County and others, in addition to his existing warrants.

Amber King and Julie Pavlock are more recent additions to the office in more administrative roles. “I’ve grown up here quite honestly,” said Lee of working at the VSO. “I’ve gone from being a newlywed, to having two boys, to being a grandmother of an 11 and a 9 year old.” Kay went on to say that she is going to miss the Veterans and her staff. Lee remarked it has been an honor working in the office, and appreciated the great support she has received from the County Judge and Commissioners Court over the years in making her office available to support county Veterans. In a small retirement ceremony at the Veterans Service Office on December 13th, Mrs. Lee was lauded for her tireless decades of work for Montgomery County Veterans and their families. She was honored by County dignitaries, her office staff, and County Veterans organizations. “She has given her entire heart to this office,” said Assistant Veterans Service Officer Karen Karr. “And it's by her

Kay’s staff presented her with a rocking chair to use as she starts to enjoy her retirement years. “It was very much an honor to do this for many years," said Lee, as she teared a bit. “It’s been a challenge many times, but I truly enjoyed meeting all the Veterans.” She spoke fondly of seeing Veterans come and go over the years, and was saddened to see the loss of a special Veteran friend this past

Enhancing Charitable Impact Through Strategic Giving: Expertise by Kent Pendleton, AAMS, Independent Advisor with Raymond James The holiday season, a time synonymous with generosity and giving, presents a unique opportunity for thoughtful charitable contributions. As an independent advisor with Raymond James and an Accredited Asset Management Specialist (AAMS) at Pendle Hill Advisors, I am dedicated to guiding clients on how to make their charitable efforts impactful and taxefficient, particularly as we approach the end of the tax year. The Value of Charitable Giving in the Holiday Season This festive season is an ideal period for considering how our generosity can extend beyond our immediate circle. "Strate-

gically planning charitable contributions before the year's end not only benefits the recipients but can also provide you with significant tax advantages," I counsel my clients. Effective Charitable Giving Strategies for the Holidays 1 . L e v e r a g i n g Ta x Benefits: Making donations to qualified charities before year-end can reduce your taxable income, offering immediate tax relief. 2. Choosing Between Itemizing and Standard Deductions: It's crucial in the current tax landscape to determine whether itemizing deductions is more advantageous than opting for the standard deduction. 3. Donating Appreciated Assets: Gifting stocks or other appreciated assets

is often a wise move, yielding a full market value deduction and circumventing capital gains taxes. Charitable Remainder Trusts for Substantial Philanthropic Projects As an independent advisor, I often recommend Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) to clients aiming to make significant charitable contributions. "CRTs are not just about tax benefits; they're a powerful means to commit a substantial amount towards impactful charitable projects, with the bonus of a current year tax deduction," I explain. Benefits of Charitable Remainder Trusts -Supporting Major Charitable Efforts: CRTs enable you to allocate a significant sum towards future large-scale charitable initiatives.

- I m m e d i a t e Ta x Deduction: One of the most compelling benefits is the immediate tax deduction, which can help reduce your current year's tax burden. Philanthropic Planning at Pendle Hill Advisors At Pendle Hill Advisors, we pride ourselves on seamlessly integrating charitable giving into our clients' broader financial strategies. "Balancing your philanthropic aspirations with astute financial planning is essential for maximizing the impact of your generosity," is a guiding principle of our practice. Closing Thoughts on Ye a r - E n d C h a r i t a b l e Planning As the year concludes, it's an important moment to consider your charitable goals. Whether through direct donations or

structured vehicles like CRTs, thoughtful planning can greatly enhance the efficacy and satisfaction of your charitable endeavors. Congratulations ‘Kid of the Week’ Olivia This sharp little girl is Olivia M., 9, and she is a member of a Cub Scout Pack in Montgomery. She was recently at the Wreaths Across America event held on December 16th, at the Montgomery Memorial Cemetery. She attends an MISD elementary school. Olivia is very well spoken for a young girl. There was no need to ask her about ABCs or 123s, which is a testament to her upbringing. Olivia’s favorite subject is science, because “I’m always trying to figure out more about The World, and what’s around us.” Her favorite teachers are Ms. Unger, Ms. Langham. Ms. Roland, and Ms. Sear. Olivia loves watching Longhorn’s football, since her Mother went to UT Permian Basin. She joined The Boy Scouts because of her love for camping in tents, and for the sounds of nature, like those of crickets. Olivia’s love for camping was instilled in her by her father who is the Scoutmaster for her Pack. She loves reading “The One and Only …” series by Katherine Applegate, and other books as well, plus she watches a little television too. Olivia would love to be an astronaut, which she is preparing for now with her science and math interests. We should expect great things from this little girl. Good Luck Olivia, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Kid of the Week’.

Congratulations ‘Pet of the Week’ SAMMY Meet SAMMY. A lovable 3 year old Smooth Short-Haired Dachshund, who lives in Teas Lake in Conroe, off League Line Road, with Amy and John Koroleski. She sheds a little bit, but not like long-haired dogs. Sammy is a high-energy dog, and is stubborn as all get out. Dachshunds were originally from Germany, and bred to hunt badgers. In fact, they have the soul of a hunter, and they actually have competitions to hunt smells of badgers. Sammy loves to be walked twice a day, which is called for since she is on a doggie diet. Amy says Sammy will eat and eat and eat, so she has to eat a healthy diet to remain fit and trim. Another reason for Sammy to watch her weight is to keep the pressure off their back, since their backs are long. John, says Sammy, given the chance, will eat you out of house and home. Good Luck SAMMY, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Pet of the Week’.

4) US National Park Pass - If your loved ones enjoy the great outdoors, a US National Park Pass is the gift that keeps giving. Offering year-long admission to more than 2,000 federal recreational sites across the U.S., the pass is perfect for adventurers and nature lovers.

Opinion / Editorial Ruben Borjas Jr, Columnist Ruben’s Montgomery Musings I recently ran into one of Montgomery’s or Lake Creek Settlements homeless individuals in front of a fast food restaurant on SH 105. Now, homelessness, in our little part of The World. Well, it’s not rampant. It’s a very small community, perhaps, six individuals, tops. Conroe’s Switch definitely has more homeless, but you rarely see

If You Lack Expectations in Your Kids …. survival is incredible, and worth telling. It’s a reminder to parents that their kids' upbringing shouldn’t be taken for granted. If you coddle, or lack expectations in your kids, or even expect too much of them, the consequences can be devastating to their future psyches. And one Jeff on this Earth is way too many. Look, I can’t have children thanks to Saddam Hussein, but when I moved to Montgomery County 20 years ago, my sister and her husband gave me the chance to become a second father to their boys. With their busy careers, they needed an extra set of hands to help with their kids, and it gave me a chance to act as an avuncular figure in their kids' lives; even though I was their real uncle. You can ask me ‘what did I know about parenting?’ And you’d be right, I knew nothing. I was still recovering from my cancer associated with my service in the First Gulf War, so I wasn’t the ready-set-go cool uncle that most kids expect. I was more of the uncle that taught the boys what to expect about life. I left the child rearing, and most of the diaper-changing, to my sister. Over the years, as the kids grew, I treated them more as adults than I did kids. I taught them about things they could use when they became adults. Things like the simple saving of money and finances. They knew if you had a credit card, that you better have the money in the bank to pay off the bill when it came due, if you wanted to avoid interest payments. I gave them back accounts and input small incremental sums each month for them to build wealth. I started Edward Jones accounts for them so they could contribute to their retirements the moment they started working. I always press retirement awareness for young workers. Some will thank me and take action on the task, and most will say ‘yeah, don’t worry about it, I’m planning on attending the next great party coming this weekend’. I had expectations of my sister’s boys, and they learned to exceed my expectations. Yes, there were some bumps along the

way; especially with my youngest nephew. Who it turns out was not as keen on book learning in a college setting as his brothers were. He was more of a hands-on learner, and is exceeding my expectations in air conditioning and heating. He is only 23, and in conversations over dinner, I’m so blown away by his confidence and his plans for the future. Truly, I’m in awe. He works in an industry that is always in demand for service with heating or cooling. And in his planning, he intends to teach students in his own school by 30. Quite frankly, I’m impressed, and it takes a lot to impress me. Now with that out of the way, let’s get back to Jeff. Believe it or not, he is from The Bronx, so you know he is a Yankees fan. And besides, his Northeasterly accent also gives up the game. Jeff got into trouble with the law in New York, and quit school with a sixth grade education. His parents tried to knock some sense into him, but it didn’t take. Jeff’s Mom and Dad had good professions, and made a good living, but as with so many parents today, they maybe didn't take their children’s well-being into account as much as they should have. I mean, you wouldn’t let your kid(s) quit school after sixth grade? Of course not, but still, many kids are coddled, perhaps too much. My financial planner reminds me every time I purchase a stock, mutual fund, or bond, that ‘past performance is not indicative of future results’. And so goes it with parents and their kids. Case in point, my best friend James. He lived in my neighborhood, in the house across the street. He grew up with successful parents. I’m not saying my parents weren't successful. They were. They just went about it without degrees. They taught me how to save, and be responsible in my spending. My best friend’s parents, once their income started to rise, chose to move to a more exclusive part of town. A place with larger houses and lots, and kids whose actions were not so readily monitored by busy professional parental units.

Yet, with their larger allowances, it afforded their kids to partake in the drug culture. When I had my epiphany moment back when I turned 17, I realized that I was not ready for book learning in college, and I didn’t want to be a burger flipper. So I made the decision to join the United States Army, and after my Junior Year in high school had finished, I had already early enlisted in the military. I don’t think my best friend ever had an epiphany moment. And his parents, who both had degrees, and worked hard in their professions, probably didn’t have enough time or the forethought to have a serious sit down with their son, and talk about the realities of career and living outside of their purview. That’s what happened to my best friend, and in a nutshell, t h a t ’s p r o b a b l y w h a t happened to Jeff. He failed to launch. Quite frankly, we have a lot of successful parents in Montgomery and the Lake Creek Settlement area, and their past parental performance is not indicative of their children’s future results. The marketplace is changing rapidly, and the professions that parents think will be there for their children when they graduate high school or college, or after they start their careers, may not be there when the time comes. I think it would have been more than proper for Jeff’s parents to read him ‘The Riot Act,’ that if he doesn’t act quickly to counterbalance his mistake, or he could wind up with a less than desirable life. Jeff certainly wasn’t thinking when he quit school, since the simplicity of life then cannot possibly compare to what it is today. I’m surprised he was able to join the Army with his antiquated education, much less be deployed to Vietnam, where lives were on the line everyday. But he made it through his tour and returned home. And when it came to the realization that he needed to expand his sixth grade education following his Army service, the simple fact that he was a 26 year old man, and would be in a room full of 12 or 13 year olds stopped him cold

in his tracks. That decision, relegated Jeff to a life of minimum wage jobs, which kept him on the move from state to state from the East Coast to Montgomery. When I saw Jeff, on the day before Christmas Eve. I needed to purchase a gift card at this chain fast-food restaurant I visited on SH 105 just outside of Montgomery proper. I then saw Jeff, and from the conversations I have had with a store manager I know in Old Town, I kinda figured it was the man. I knew he had abdominal cancer, and was being treated. In fact I had seen Jeff with the pull cart he was dragging down 105 the week before Christmas, so when I saw him at the restaurant, I kinda figured that he was the same man. In accosting him, I fell under several roles, with my VFW side taking precedence, my reporter role second, and my columnist role in the tertiary position. I knew God put me in his presence for a reason, and if Jeff’s story helps one parent help their child; to toughen them for life’s journey, then it’s worth it. Jeff has been homeless for well over 50 years. And a lot of it has to do with claustrophobia. He really didn’t want to talk of his war experience in Vietnam, so here I am trying to put a case together like Hercule Poirot, and with Jeff being of a smaller size, I’m thinking he was a ‘tunnel rat’. It was the most thankless and loneliest duty in Vietnam, and if you drew it, you would be subject to endless hours crawling in tight and dark conditions, expecting to be killed at any moment. I’ve no doubt that Jeff was amongst the bravest soldiers in Vietnam, and he has been paying for it since 1967. The Country owes Jeff more than just a medical service to keep him walking upright. That keeps him moving and hiding from law enforcement officials, who don’t want to take the extra time to understand him. For Jeff is far below the people we see and and really don’t see at the same time. The people that wash our cars, bus our tables, clean our houses, or mow our yards. For most of us, sadly, Jeff is invisible.

Lake Conroe Christmas Tree Drive Conroe, Texas—The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife's (TPWD) Inland Fisheries are preparing for their annual Christmas Tree Drive to collect discarded Christmas trees for use as artificial fish habitat. During the month of January, residents can drop off used live Christmas trees in an effort to enhance Lake Conroe fishery while simultaneously reducing landfill waste. “Once holiday season comes to an end many are left wondering what to do with their Christmas tree. Christmas trees, stripped of any decorations, make excellent fish habitat,” says Bret Raley, SJRA's Lake Conroe Division Manager. “Every year, SJRA staff in collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife use Christmas trees to form what are known as brush reefs. These reefs are deployed into Lake Conroe

and provide food and protection for prey species of fish while attracting the predator species that are so much fun to catch.” SJRA attaches the trees to cement blocks and sinks them at pre-determined locations throughout the lake. Once deployed, the locations are publicized on SJRA's social media so anglers can use them as fishing destinations. If trees are not properly weighed down, they could eventually float free or wind up on the shoreline instead of the bottom of the lake. For that reason, SJRA asks residents to donate their trees rather than attempting to anchor them in the lake themselves. Live Christmas trees can be droped-off at two locations: Montgomery County at the West End of the Lake Conroe Dam and Harris County at the Southwest Corner of the Highlands Reservoir.

Richard Tramm, SJRA Highlands Division Manager stated, “SJRA has hosted the Christmas Tree Drive for a number of years. We are honored to be able to offer a second drop off location this year, at the Highlands Division office in Harris County. This will allow local area residents to participate in the drive, without having to make the

trip to Lake Conroe.” To see the specific locations where you can drop off your Christmas tree, please refer to the maps in the graphic. The last day to drop-off for this season's tree drive is Friday, January 26th. Please remember that trees need to be real (not artificial) and free of all decorations.

Community Sacred Heart Catholic School Choir Performs At The Kennedy Center In Washington D.C. Conroe, Texas – Sacred Heart Catholic School's choir recently traveled to Wa s h i n g t o n D . C . t o perform with the Annie Moses Band in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Sacred Heart Catholic School choir, led by music director Mr. Chris Nolin, recently traveled to Washington D.C. for an unforgettable performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The 4th through 8th grade choir joined the world-renowned Annie Moses Band on stage to celebrate the bands 20th anniversary performing “Under the Tree of Life” narrated live by special guest Jim Caviezel (actor, “Passion of the Christ,” “Sound of Freedom”) and also included a special appearance by Clay Walker. For the Sacred Heart choir students, the opportunity to perform at one of the world's most prestigious performing arts venues and collaborate with a Grammy-

nominated ensemble was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "To stand on the stage where so many famous musicians, dancers, and actors have performed was absolutely thrilling for our students," said Mr. Nolin. "Sharing the stage with the Annie Moes Band was an honor and our students were able to see that their hard work and dedication to their craft could lead to amazing opportunities.” The Annie Moses Band is an acclaimed classicalcrossover string and vocal band known for their fusion of musical styles and highenergy performances. Under the direction of award-winning composers Annie, Alex, and Benjamin Wolaver, the Band has released over 15 albums and performed on stages around the world. In addition to the performance, the choir toured many of the historic monuments and museums in Washington D.C. For most students, it was their first visit to the nation's

capital, making the trip both an educational and inspirational experience. The Sacred Heart Catholic School choir program gives students opportunities to develop and share their musical talents with the community through school liturgies, seasonal concerts, community events and outreach. Under the direction of Mr. Nolin, the choir program continues to grow in both size and prestige at Sacred Heart. "Mr. Nolin's dedication to our students and the future of the arts education at Sacred Heart has been a true gift to our community," said Deb Brown, Sacred Heart Catholic School Principal. "He has led the transformation and growth of our arts department, and we were delighted to see our program given this moment in the spotlight.” Founded in 1958, Sacred Heart Catholic School is an Accredited School in the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston and is dedicated to educating the heart, mind

Community Veteran Of The Week: Ira Criner By: Ruben Borjas Jr, Division. This was back in the 1950s after the Korean MCN Contributing Writer War, but the Cold War kept This week’s Veteran is tensions high with soldiers Ira Criner, 86, who was in the military at the time. recently at the Conroe Ira was a parachutist in an Symphony Orchestra’s Infantry Company at Fort Christmas Concert. Ira was Campbell. This was still in the United States Army, when The 101st Airborne stationed at Fort Campbell, still used airplanes to Kentucky, for three years, deliver soldiers from the air with the 101st Airborne to the ground, and there was

no postage involved. By Vietnam, the division switched to helicopters to ferry soldiers into combat. When Ira wasn’t firing his rifle on the shooting range, or out in the field on training maneuvers, or cleaning his barracks, room or weapon; Ira found time to make 18 parachute training jumps. That’s a lot

when you figure most people like to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground. But evidently Ira liked it since they didn’t have to push him out of the plane, but he did push a couple of chickens out. Afterwards they liked it. Congratulations Ira on being MCNs ‘Veteran of the Week’.
