Thanks to a dramatic downtown revitalization, this charming southern town is quickly becoming a must see destination in the Southeast, offering verything from eclectic culinary experiences and world renowned arts and culture,

Inspired by the hospitality and culture of Louisiana, Paul Dallas moved back to Montgomery and opened the doors of Wishbone Cafe in the spring of 2008. Wishbone Cafe was inspired by his deep dive into the mystery of creole cuisine and his "wish" to share the experience with everyone who visits his restaurant.

ITINERARY WITH INTENTION A meaningful history and powerful sites that share its story make MGM a can’t-miss experience for visitors who want to travel with purpose.

Home to diffe ence-makers like Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Judge Frank M. Johnson, as well as current leaders like Bryan Stevenson, author of “Just Mercy” and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, Montgomery continues to face tough issues head on, initiating unprecedented change and inspiring the nation to fight for justice and equalit . The city will inspire you, too. A visit to Montgomery provides the opportunity to learn the lessons of our past and discover how you can play a part in creating a brighter future for all.

DAY 1 Get personal and purposeful with your trip by enlisting a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. See Montgomery through a diffe ent lens with Michelle Browder of More than Tours, recently featured in National Geographic Traveler, or let original Civil Rights footsoldier and Selma-to-Montgomery marcher Jake Williams with Montgomery Tours escort you on a site-seeing tour based on his firs -person perspective. Gain encouragement from Wanda Battle with Legendary Tours and see firs -hand the places where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. transformed from a young preacher to the internationally known Civil Rights leader at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church and Parsonage or hear real life perspectives of intriguing landmark site from guide Ann Clemons of Triple E Group Services.

Stop for a bite at the 102-yearold Chris’ Famous Hotdogs on historic Dexter Avenue, and you’ll have something delicious in common with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hank Williams, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Elvis Presley, all of whom enjoyed their share of this eatery’s famous hot dogs and burgers. Or check out new vegan restaurant Plant Bae, whose owners chowed down on diverse plant-based dishes in foodie meccas like New York, Las Vegas and Atlanta to find ideas for their menu In the afternoon, uncover what drove the Montgomery Bus Boycott at the Rosa Parks Museum and Library, learn about the martyrs of the

movement at the Civil Rights Memorial and Museum and visit a rehabilitated Greyhound bus station, now the Freedom Riders Museum. If you’re staying in the walk-able downtown area, end your day with elevated Southern fare in the rustic yet elegant Central, or check out the options of Alley Station, located in a renovated 1895 warehouse in the heart of the downtown entertainment district.

DAY 2 Start your day the Montgomery way with a plate of biscuits at Cahawba House. Or, if your tastes are more exotic, try the Crazy Eggs and arepas at D’road Cafe. You’ll need the energy to fully explore two new and internationally recognized Civil Rights experiences created by the Equal Justice Initiative that offer complete cont xt for current conversations about racial equality. Start by spending some time at The Legacy Museum, followed by lunch at Pannie George’s. Next, catch the free shuttle to The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and don’t rush here. This powerful site is challenging minds and changing hearts by sharing compelling stories and shining a spotlight on truths that need to be told. Refuel with a locally roasted coffee and a pastry at Prevail Union, named Alabama’s best coffee y Food & Wine magazine,

EXTRA, EXTRA! before your dinner at Old Cloverdale’s best kept secret, El Rey Burrito Lounge, a funky gem serving up Mexican-inspired, locally sourced food with an array of delicious vegetarian items. After your evening meal, mosey on over to the nearby Leroy Bar and sip a libation from its carefully curated craft beer selection or creative cocktail menu.

DAY 3 Begin at Café Louisa and choose from a tempting selection of house-made organic breads, scones, muffins and m e. Or cozy up to some Southern comfort food classics at Barbara Gail's Neighborhood Grille, where everyone is welcomed like family. Next, load up on local loot at Southern Arts and Makers Collective, an eclectic shop downtown packed with jewelry, paintings, pottery and more all made by Montgomery hands. (Check its social media to find detail on events like pop-ups with local bakers, plus art and craft classes and workshops.)

neighbor, Bibb Street Pizza, will send over a pizza, stromboli or salad. Or belly up at That’s My Dog Jr., a restaurant completely run by teenagers and designed to empower and employ local youth. Brenda’s BBQ is another tasty option for filling our stomach and your heart; it’s just steps away from some of the moving murals (see pg. 46) created by local artists that express Montgomery’s history through the eyes of present-day activists. And no tour of the city’s meaningful sites is complete without a visit to the Frank M. Johnson Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse, where Judge Johnson presided over some of the country’s most pivotal Civil Rights cases.

Montgomery is full of things that deserve your time and attention, too many to put into the itinerary, so in addition to those spots and stops, we suggest strolling through the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden

at Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, using your

voice to ‘Speak the Speech’ of famous playwrights that dawn panels in Blount Cultural Park, experiencing downtown from the Alabama River on a Sip-n-Cycle Pedal Cruise, going wild with more than 700 animals in natural habitats at The Montgomery Zoo, or immersing yourself in the tangible history of Old Alabama Town.

Grab one more meal at Saza Serious Italian, which offers thin-crust pies an Italian fare in colorful, brickwalled quarters. Then, toast the city goodnight with a craft cocktail on the patio or a game of ping pong with a new friend at Montgomery’s friendliest neighborhood bar, KRU at Mt. Meigs.

Take a break and relax with a craft brew at Common Bond Brewers, where the brewers and staff invite ou to linger over a pint and make a connection. When hunger strikes, the brewery’s FOR INFORMATION 800-240-9452 13

See For Yourself

Westside

Nestled between I-65 South and Highway 231 South, this stretch of town is known to locals as the South Central Business District. It includes several unique restaurants and bakeries and features one of the city’s public parks and golf courses.

ART

Murals have been adding to the appeal and drawing people together, particularly in and around downtown Montgomery, since the city’s Public Art Commission was founded in 2013. But recently, a West Montgomery neighborhood tapped into the power of paint. Artist Kevin King looked at the exterior wall of his Oak Street studio and gallery space and saw a big blank canvas. He worked with two other artists to create a bold, bright “Welcome to West Side Montgomery” mural that depicts some pivotal Montgomery moments. It looks cool, but it’s also spurring economic development and community connections in the surrounding area as it draws people to pose for social-media-worthy photos.

Montgomery is all about the connections built within the community. Community gardens, murals and even annual festivals, bring people together. Come see the art and learn the history of the neighborhoods that shaped Montgomery as they continue to grow.

ATTRACTIONS

Montgomery Whitewater, the capital city’s coming attraction will soon bring the thrills of water sports to the Westside of Montgomery that overlooks the Alabama River.

INSIDER’S TIP After you’ve taken a selfie t the “Welcome to West Side Montgomery” mural, head on over to one of two of the best kept secrets this town has to offer. Brenda’s BBQ and Barbara Gail’s Neighborhood Grille are family-owned restaurants that have been consistently serving up some of the best BBQ and southern comfort food in the city for years and are located along the historic Selma to Montgomery Trail, near the City of St. Jude historic site.

How to Speak Southern If you’re not from around here, some of the lingo you’ll read and hear at area restaurants may be confusing. Here’s a little dictionary to help decipher Southern food speak.

Rock N Roll Sushi

n They offer “twisted” varieties of sushi named after rock musicians. The signature dish, the Thriller Roll, is a “band favorite” and features shrimp tempura rolled with cream cheese, then fried and topped with baked crab meat, spicy mayo, eel sauce and crunchy flakes. J

334-356-3641 • rnrsushi.com

Meat & Three:

Usually refers to more casual “home cooking” spots and means the menu offe s a plate with your choice of one meat (fried chicken, country fried steak, fried catfis — sensing a pattern here?) and three sides, usually Southern-style vegetables like fried okra, fried green tomatoes, squash casserole, creamed corn, collard greens and more. Often served with cornbread or biscuit.

Grits:

Wintzell’s Oyster House

n The signature dish lets you dig into four different variaties of oysters. The Oyster Sampler features 16 tender oysters, including four classic Rockefeller, four chargrilled, four Bienville (topped with shrimp, crab and parmesan) and four Monterey (topped with bacon, melty cheddar and spicy jalapenos). J

334-262-4257 • wintzellsoysterhouse.com

A creamy, savory porridge-like dish made from ground hominy and often embellished with cheese. Shrimp & Grits is a favorite Dixie dish.

Sweet Tea:

The default setting when you order a glass of iced-tea down here. And sweet means S-W-E-E-T. Specify “unsweet” if you don’t want any sugar. Or ask for half-and-half for just a little sweetness.

Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs

n For a bite of Montgomery, get your hands around a hot dog from Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs on Dexter Avenue. Try the “All the Way.” It is a dog drenched in Chris’ secret sauce, mustard and kraut. D J

FAMILY FUN SPOTS

There’s so much to do in Montgomery and quite a bit of it is yours for the taking. Check out these places that will entertain you and your family without requiring you to open your wallet.

Express Yourself

Located inside the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, ARTWORKS is an interactive, hands-on wonderland where the world of the visual arts becomes child’s play. Visitors are encouraged to touch the art in ARTWORKS and to explore the many computers with a variety of art-related software. A mezzanine features an assortment of art-related books, games and puzzles. Admission to MMFA and ARTWORKS is free, but a donation of any size is always appreciated.

Splish Splash

Take in the Alabama River’s natural beauty with a visit to the Riverwalk. But when the temperature heats up, so does the fun level, thanks to the Riverwalk Splash Pad. Parents can chill out while the kids cool off—running, jumping and, of course, splashing among rising and falling jets of water. D

Capital Idea

Alabama is a treasure trove of history—some of it tumultuous, all of it interesting—and you can get an up-close-and-personal experience with the state’s multi-faceted heritage by taking the free, guided tour of the State Capitol Building. Built in 1851, Alabama’s State Capitol Building is one of the only state capitols designated a National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest capitol buildings in the country. (And we think one of the most beautiful too!) The tour guides at the Capitol share a wealth of knowledge and insider information. D

Say Moo

Turn on the imagination with the interactive exhibits and displays at the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association’s MOOseum. Kids and adults alike will walk away with a fresh perspective on Alabama’s important agricultural heritage. D

Blast from the Past

Hands-on Gallery & Grandma's Attic, a hands-on gallery, located in the Museum of Alabama, gives children a chance to experience Alabama's past in an interactive environment. The gallery offers a unique hands-on area where children dress up in clothes from an earlier time and play with a variety of objects from the non-permanent education collection. It also features discovery boxes that aid children in exploring diffe ent topics in Alabama history such as World War II, American Indian pottery, quilt-making and Alabama's first ladies. Games, puzzles, photos, maps, toys, etc. stimulate children to learn by creating and playing. D

While you’re downtown, stop in Tucker Pecan Co. and enjoy hand-dipped ice cream cones for a dollar, sample pecans and shop for unique gifts.

Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, along the banks of the Coosa River, Wetumpka is appropriately known as the “City of Natural Beauty.” And while its abundance of small-town charm offers a leisurely lifestyle, it’s also strategically located only 10 miles north of Montgomery between U.S. Highway 231 and Interstate 65. Come see why this lovely spot is a great place to visit and to live.

Welcome to Wetumpka. Known for our heritage, hospitality and scenic landscapes, we’ve got something for everyone, and we’re happy to share it all with you. Jerry Willis, Mayor, Wetumpka, AL

• The Swayback Bridge Trail draws mountain bikers and runners from around the country with its single track full of tight technical sections and steep climbs. • The Wetumpka Riverwalk begs folks to come stroll along the banks of the Coosa River and enjoy Wetumpka’s natural resources. The trail leads to the newly constructed Sports Complex. • The scenic Coosa River (that runs right through town) and local lakes offer some of the best fishing in the s te with abundant populations of bass, crappie and catfish. The Gold Star Park bo t landing and State boat landing are both located on the Coosa for easy access. • Kayaking and canoeing the rushing rapids of the Coosa make for some fast-paced fun. Class II and III rapids appeal to paddlers from near and far. Several area businesses rent boats and other equipment. • Lake Jordan is one of the state’s premier bass-fishing lakes, earning it a spot on the popular Alabama Bass Trail. • The Piedmont Birding Trail includes two prime viewing locations at Gold Star Park and Ft. STAR-FALL Wetumpka is home to one of only two marine impact craters in the United States. The still-visible, fi emile-wide “astrobleme” was created when a meteorite collided with earth, blasting through bedrock and soil in Wetumpka 84 million years ago. The tilted rocks in and along the Coosa River are evidence of the event.

MILLBROOK

COMFORT. CONVENIENCE. COMMUNITY.

As more and more people discover the allure of the good life in Millbrook, the community spirit of this close-knit city is flou ishing.

Kids’ Kingdom

Holding On To Heritage While Millbrook is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and facing its future with optimism and confidence, it emains proud of its past. With a rich heritage dating back to the 1700s, the Millbrook area, including Robinson Springs, Coosada, Deatsville and Elmore, was known for its sprawling plantations and prominent leaders, including Bolling Hall, William Wyatt Bibb, John Archer Elmore and Benjamin Fitzpatrick. The first pioneer home built in p esent day Millbrook was known as Ellerslie, constructed in 1818 by Bolling Hall, a well-known statesman and planter of that time. Hall’s home still stands and is included in the National Register of Historic Places.

NaturePlex at the Alabama Nature Center

Between World War I and World War II, the communities of Millbrook, Coosada, and Robinson Springs, later referred to as the Tri-Community, began to evolve and grow, adding schools, churches and rail transportation. Contributing to the population growth during this era were unfortunate outbreaks of diseases in the more populated city of Montgomery. Millbrook became a place to retreat during the long, hot summers. Seasonal homes and cabins in Millbrook, Coosada and Robinson Springs offe ed families fresh country air and seclusion. Soon, the seasonal population began to stay year round.

On the Grow Today, the area retains the best of its early features and natural resources, while aggressively pursuing economic development opportunities. It has experienced a more than 40 percent increase in its population in the last 20 years, and this influx of n w residents has spurred unprecedented residential building, which in turn has attracted new commercial development that keeps gaining momentum. Residents and visitors enjoy a wide variety of retail, restaurant and hospitality options, and Millbrook’s substantial number of undeveloped and highly trafficked comm cial sites point to additional expansion and an even brighter future.

Millbrook also has convenient Interstate 65 access, is located only 10 miles north of Montgomery, Alabama’s state capital, and the Montgomery Regional Airport is approximately 20 miles from Millbrook. This ease of access is paving the way for continued prosperity.

Community Counts Millbrook residents enjoy the best of two worlds—small city comforts plus urban conveniences—creating a relaxing way of life underpinned by a genuine sense of community. The city promotes this close-knit feeling by offering plenty of opportunities for its esidents to get involved. Numerous civic and service organizations are credited with contributing to the orderly

growth and development of the city. Annual events and festivals are made possible through partnerships between community organizations and the city. And more than 50 places of worship representing many religious denominations are also an important part of community life.

Rivers are located on the eastern side of the city. Scenic Lake Martin and Lake Jordan are just minutes away. The Mill Creek meanders through the center of the Village Green, Millbrook’s town center park, and natural ponds dot the landscape in neighborhoods and on small farms.

To ensure that this spirit of connection is not lost to growth and to maintain the simplicity of a quiet, safe and healthy lifestyle, the city readily invests in parks and recreation facilities and venues. The city’s continuing support of local public schools and youth has made the fully accredited Elmore County Public School System a standout among Alabama’s public school systems. The Elmore County system serves a countywide student population of more than 11,000 at 15 schools with a mission to provide relevant, engaging, positive learning environments where students are empowered to realize their self-worth through continuous academic, social and emotional growth. A well-established community theater contributes to the cultural health of the community and represents the citizens’ appreciation for the performing arts.

The statewide headquarters and conservation educational facilities of the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) are true gems and are located in Millbrook at Lanark. This historic 300-plus-acre estate includes the Alabama Nature Center, the NaturePlex, miles of diverse nature trails and exceptional programs and events for schools and the public including nature photography classes, gardening workshops, kids’ fishing odeos and more.

Out and About The great outdoors play a prominent role in Millbrook’s quality of life too, with six well-equipped and maintained public parks that provide recreational options for all ages. A variety of outdoor options are available for hunting, fishing and bo ting enthusiasts.

Millbrook’s many amenities include two outdoor-based gems with topnotch educational and recreational facilities. The Alabama Nature Center, a facility of the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF), is a planneduse, outdoor conservation education destination that offers fir -rate educational programs and activities for schools and the public utilizing the remarkable Lanark property as a living laboratory. The Grandview Family YMCA, located on beautiful expansive grounds, offers a wide ariety of sports, fitness, aqu tics and child care programs with walking trails, athletic fields and a lake

MAXWELL GUNTER MONTGOMERY Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base have always been close partners, and the capital city is proud to have a military institution of such stature as part of its community. In 2015, the warm welcome and strong support that Montgomery has consistently provided to all who live and work at Maxwell earned the city a prestigious national award, the Altus Trophy. The recognition is presented annually to the city that has shown the most “outstanding support to an Air Education and Training Command base,” and Montgomery was chosen from many other cities for the distinction. The city has a long history of aviation excellence, starting back in 1910, when the famous “fathers of flight ” the Wright brothers, chose Montgomery as the spot for their first civilian flying school. T t same site would later become Maxwell Air Force Base. Through the years, city leaders and everyday citizens have reached out to Maxwell by holding events like Military Appreciation Week and Military Night at Biscuits baseball games. In addition, The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce includes a Military Support Council that regularly holds events like “Eggs and Issues,” breakfast meetings that allow military representatives and city and state leaders to gather and discuss important issues.
