Government and Foundations

4 | Thank You

Government and foundation grants provide critical funds for operations and educational programs.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve as interim director—and to learn much more about the programs, collections, staff, and volunteer family of the Museum. This is a glorious institution. With construction of the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden nearing completion, we have begun the planting phase. Fairlie Rinehart’s beautiful landscape plan will complement Jim Barganier’s elegant design of the structures and grounds, and the new garden space will be spectacular. We are already looking forward to big opening events in September and October. I would also like to note the Board’s special recognition of Mark Johnson in gratitude for his contributions to the Museum during his twenty-three years as director. An inscription above the lintel of the second set of entrance doors was unveiled at a small ceremony for Mark and his family on February 17. Please look for it the next time you visit. We have some wonderful programs coming up over the next few months and hope you will join us for as many of them as you can. See for yourself the many opportunities for learning, enrichment, and pleasure that the Museum offers to us all. Best wishes, Edwin C. Bridges Interim Director

Natural Wonders

The Art of Jacqueline Bishop and Douglas Bourgeois

8 | Current Exhibitions

Through June 10, 2018 Goldman, Richard, and Rushton Stakely Galleries

Natural Wonders presents the work of two Louisiana artists, Jacqueline Bishop (born 1955) and Douglas Bourgeois (born 1951). Both artists find inspiration in the history, culture, and distinctive landscape of the Gulf Coast. As long-standing friends, these artists find common ground in striving to reveal essential truths about our modern world through installations, paintings, and prints. Bishop poetically explores the fragile balance between nature and humankind while Bourgeois’s figurative and narrative imagery combines a pop sensibility with a sense of mystery and magic.

Abstract Prints from the Museum’s Collection Through April 22, 2018 Williamson, Hughes, and Wilson Galleries

Primarily known as painters and sculptors, the artists featured in The Essence of Form took advantage of the new technological advances in printmaking that occurred in the 1960s. Rooted in Abstract Expressionism, the exhibition expands into Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and Op Art, with selected prints demonstrating how artists embraced non-representational imagery to evoke emotions or to explore formal concerns.

Current Exhibitions

The Essence of Form

Anne Goldthwaite as Printmaker Through June 3, 2018 Folmar and Newman Galleries

Montgomery native Anne Goldthwaite (1869–1944) spent the majority of her professional art career as a painter in New York City; however, she was an even more prolific printmaker—particularly when women were just beginning to establish themselves in that role in the art world. This exhibition surveys Goldthwaite’s print oeuvre, beginning with her student work in Paris and extending to works produced near the end of her life when she rendered many subjects in lithography.

Journey of the Islander The Life and Art of Walter Inglis Anderson Through June 10, 2018 Atrium, Blackmon, and Weil Galleries

The life of Mississippi artist Walter Anderson (1903–1965) centered on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This exhibition from the collections of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, assembles work in virtually all the media that this artist utilized to capture that quickly vanishing environment. In paintings, drawings, prints, and ceramics, he focused on the plants, animals, and landscapes that are distinctive to the Gulf Coast.

Incunabula

Prints Made Before 1501 Through June 17, 2018 Weil Graphic Arts Study Center Gallery

Printed words and images made in Europe before the year 1501 belong to a special class of artifacts known as incunabula, which are the earliest printed books, pamphlets, and broadsides. The Museum’s collection of 18 incunabula depicts religious, mythological, and anecdotal subjects that were popular during the Renaissance, and they illuminate the visual culture of that age as well as the evolution of early printmaking techniques from woodcut to engraving.

Rodin 10 | Current Exhibitions

Realism, Fragments, and Abstraction Through July 8, 2018 Young Gallery

Bronzes derived from French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s (1840–1917) The Gates of Hell, 1880–1917, and Burghers of Calais, 1884–1889, on loan to the Museum from Iris Cantor, represent some of Rodin’s best-known art and demonstrate his radical practice of fragmenting figures for artistic effect.

Upcoming Exhibitions

Following Form: Prints by Sculptors

In anticipation of the opening of the Museum’s John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden, now slated for fall of 2018, the Museum features an installation of works on paper created by artists who are also known as sculptors. Many artists work in multiple media, and there is a strong connection between the threedimensional character of sculpture and the creation of sculptural compositions in two dimensions found in modern and contemporary art.

Alexander Archipenko (American, born Ukraine, 1887–1964), Torso in Space, 1952, lithograph and screen print with embossing on paper, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Association Purchase, 2015.11.1

mmfa.org | 11

Artists working in multiple media such as Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) demonstrated the broadest stylistic range of their work in their prints, while those like Donald Judd (American, 1928–1994) were primarily sculptors who translated their sculptural insights onto the printed page.

Chris Wade: Evolution of a Dream June 23 through September 9, 2018 Williamson, Hughes, and Wilson Galleries

12 | Upcoming Exhibitions

Madison, Alabama-based artist Chris Wade (born 1986) dreams of abandoned space rockets. Letting his imagination run wild, his interpretations of these dreams become meticulous drawings and watercolor paintings portraying solitary spaceships subsumed by trees alongside pictures of vast tree house cities located in a landscape of rockets. The drawings follow a narrative progression that metaphorically tracks Wade’s own experiences, illustrating a journey of healing and a discovery of self while capturing a renewed sense of innocence. Although highly personal, Wade’s drawings deal with universal concerns.

Upcoming Exhibitions

Past Perfected: Childhood in Art

Children and childhood have served as subjects for artists for many centuries, reflecting social changes in the ways childhood has been perceived over time. From images that portray children as “small adults” to those that celebrate youth as a time of happiness and exploration, artists have captured children’s likenesses as well as their activities. mmfa.org | 13

This exhibition’s imagery begins with European prints of the 17th century and concludes with modern perspectives that consider the interior life of children and the psychology of young people as they approach maturity.

Jane Cassidy: The Undersea Well June 30 through September 16, 2018 Goldman, Richard, and Rushton Stakely Galleries

14 | Upcoming Exhibitions

Jane Cassidy (born 1984), an Irish artist currently living and working in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, creates site-specific audio-visual installations. Cassidy aims to simultaneously distill and expand on the rhythmic and magnetic natural elements found in the changing environment of her home country from which she derives much of her inspiration. To do so she manipulates various technologies such as speakers and projectors and fuses light and sound to form an immersive sensory experience: serene environments filled with visual music. Cassidy combines her original compositions—music filled with meditative deep swells, slow pulses, field recordings, and choirs—with visuals that work in tandem to conjure a variety of emotions. The Undersea Well features multiple works of art: individual sculptural encounters simulating deep space, a contemplative installation melding sound and LED illumination to simultaneously evoke fireflies in nature and a celestial landscape, and a fully immersive environment of projected light and music that gently envelops both the body and mind of the viewer in the lapping waves of the sea. In all of her work she plays with the illusory, finding a symmetry between sound and light.

Our Work in the Schools 2017–2018 School Year

The close of the school year marks two milestones for the Museum—a successful first year of Becoming Alabama: A Cultural Legacy, a tour for Montgomery Public School fifth graders designed to celebrate the bicentennial of Alabama, and the fifth year of the Learning Through Art: Artist in Residence Program weekly art classes at Wares Ferry Road Elementary School. Both engage students in creating and responding to art while making important cross-curricular connections. Becoming Alabama explores the narrative of Alabama history through art in the Museum’s galleries and creative activities. Learning Through Art incorporates studentled discussion and writing about art along with creating. A teacher at Wares Ferry, whose classroom is impacted by the program, recently encouraged the Museum to “continue to integrate art in all schools for tracking critical thinking skills.”
