4 | Thank You

October is a big month for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. The beautiful new John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden will be open to the public, and our new director begins her tenure here. The Garden represents years of hard work by a number of people in the Museum family, and it will let us offer a whole new array of programs and services. Come see it for yourself. Our new director, Angie Dodson, began her career here as an education curator in the early 1990s. After twenty-three years working in Washington, D.C., she returns to Montgomery with a sterling record of achievement and references that glow with warmth and praise. All of us who met her in the search process are thrilled at the prospect of her leadership. I would like to close by thanking Mayor Todd Strange, President Leslie Sanders, and the Museum Board for giving me the chance to serve as interim director for the last fourteen months. I have loved being part of the life of this wonderful institution. I now look forward to watching—and lending a hand when I can—as Angie leads the Museum into a new era of growth and of service to our community. Best wishes,

Edwin C. Bridges Interim Director

6 | Spotlight

Recently a colleague in another country remarked, “I can’t believe the philanthropy in American art museums!” Indeed, how generously our members and Montgomery’s citizens give of their resources, without which we could not flourish. A special place in the heart of the institution belongs to a group of over 40 individuals, our docents, who most weeks spend hours at the Museum training and guiding tours. They lead groups in preparing for Museum visits and at the Museum in activities such as discussing an intriguing figure in painting, dancing in ArtWorks, and creating unexpected works in the studios. At the end of the day, our volunteer educators tell us they are the ones who benefit. Frank Gitschier remarks that he loves “the kindergarteners’ insightful observations, seeing the excitement as they explore a piece of art for the first time.”

For Freedoms: Citzenship in Art Through November 18, 2018 Williamson, Hughes, and Wilson Galleries

8 | Current Exhibitions

During his State of the Union address in 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt laid out the goals that he believed were the fundamental and essential rights of people not only in our democracy, but also around the world. These “Four Freedoms” encompassed freedom of speech and worship—both protected in the First Amendment of our Constitution—along with freedom from want and fear. More than 75 years later, each of these civic ideals is often still contested.

In conjunction with For Freedoms|The 50 State Initiative, this exhibition hopes to generate greater participation in our American democracy by examining the various points of view that different artists bring to each of these “Four Freedoms”, challenging each of us to consider what these rights mean today.

Let us know what freedom means to you!

Continuum presents a group of Beverly Erdreich’s drawings that were conceived as variations of compositions by the great Spanish painter/ printmaker Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828). Erdreich’s drawings are created atop reproductions of these powerful compositions, bringing the stinging brutality of Goya’s interpretation of 19th-century atrocities into a modern context.

One of the primary aspects of art in traditional African societies is its use in celebrating life passages at every stage—from birth, to the initiation of young people into maturity, to death. Still other rituals invite the intercession of spirits or ancestors into daily activity. This exhibition focuses on forms used in ceremonies, and particularly the masks that are central to dances and rituals. The works are from the Museum’s collection or are on loan from the private collection of Dileep and Martha Mehta.

Views of the South

Photographs from The Do Good Fund Through January 6, 2019 Goldman, Richard, and Rushton Stakely Galleries

10 | Current Exhibitions

The Do Good Fund was established in Columbus, Georgia, in 2012, to build a museum-quality collection of contemporary southern photographs; to display them in museums, galleries, and nontraditional venues; and to encourage community-based programming with each exhibition. The collection has grown to almost 500 photos created by 83 artists since World War II.

Images on view at the Museum feature themes related to food and shelter and reflect distinctive artistic practices devoted to an exploration of life in the South over the last 70 years. Like many other forms of art, the photographs combine beauty with an invitation to reflect more deeply on their subjects—and look at them anew.

Art in the Garden

The Inaugural Sculpture Garden Installation September 25, 2018 through Spring 2020 Caddell Sculpture Garden

The new John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden provides an innovative venue for the display of art in the ever-changing natural landscape. Every element of nature—from the landscape design to the cyclical progression of skies, lights, and seasons—complements the sculptural creations sited in this new “gallery.”

12 | Current Exhibitions

Designed with the flexibility to accommodate changing displays, the inaugural installation features the temporary siting of sculpture by a number of contemporary artists including two of international distinction: Deborah Butterfield and Jun Kaneko. Magnificently standing in the grass is Butterfield’s Isbelle, 2001, a unique bronze horse modeled on the artist’s dressage mare and cast from her adroit assemblage of wood sticks and pieces. Kaneko’s three ceramic works from his Dango series are monumental, playful, and combine painting and sculpture with thematic resonances of historical Eastern and Western art. In addition, to celebrate Alabama’s bicentennial and demonstrate the depth of creativity found in the state, the new installation highlights work by seven innovative Alabama sculptors: Adam Bodine; Casey Downing, Jr.; Christopher Fennell; Randy Gachet; Joe Minter; Chris Boyd Taylor; and Craig Wedderspoon. Also on view is our first permanent addition to the Sculpture Garden, Untitled (Nymph), 1933, by Jessie Duncan Wiggin.

Lino Tagliapietra: Master of Beauty November 10, 2018 through January 20, 2019 Atrium, Blackmon, and Weil Galleries

14 | Upcoming Exhibitions

Lino Tagliapietra said, “I think in glass. I think about the material, the fire, the technique, the movement.” His thoughts become the basis for extraordinary sculptures, a selection of which will be on view in Lino Tagliapietra: Master of Beauty.

Tagliapietra (Italian, born 1934) combines the techniques, colors, motifs, and forms that he mastered as a glassblower in the factories of his native Murano, Italy, with innovative ideas gathered from his travels, teaching, and encounters with American Studio Glass artists. The glass pieces he has produced since the beginning of his independent artistic career in 1979—when he began teaching at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington— are stunning explorations that transform his concepts into fluid sculptural forms. Tagliapietra’s mastery of glass and his depth of understanding of the material is apparent in his ability to stretch and bend it into elegant and elongated shapes with both smooth and etched surfaces. These elements, merged with his characteristic inventiveness, established Tagliapietra as an artist who has had a profound impact on glassmaking over the course of his long and distinguished career. Lino Tagliapietra: Master of Beauty features 40 pieces created since the late 1990s with examples from several of his most important series.

The Improvisational Eye Works on Paper by Self-Taught Artists November 24, 2018 to February 3, 2019 Williamson, Hughes, and Wilson Galleries

16 | Upcoming Exhibitions

Some of the 20th-century’s most innovative artists, those now typically described as “self-taught,” revelled in the use of unusual and distinctive materials, many of which were not generally associated with the production of art. Self-taught artists frequently utilized whatever resources they had at hand, including paper that may have had a previous use such as commercial packaging. The drawings of Bill Traylor (American, 1856–1949) are excellent examples of such “re-use”—in his case cardboard that he scavenged from empty boxes that had held candy or notions. The artists in this exhibition were improvisational both in their choices of material as well as the imagery they transferred to their paper media.

Images of Children in Nature: Messages About Children’s Place in the World Through Art LECTURE

Sat, Oct 20 2pm Dr. Elizabeth (Scout) Blum, professor in the Department of History and Philosophy at Troy University, will explore the themes of subordination and gender roles as presented in the Past Perfected exhibition. Cultural values are relayed through a wide variety of sources, including art. In art as well as children’s fiction, associations of children with nature often have the underlying purpose of reminding and reinforcing messages of subordination within society. Not only do these messages subordinate children in general, they also dictate very different roles and expectations of young boys and girls.
