We’ve been reporting for more than a year on the progress of the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden. As the contractors wrap up their work, all of us here at the Museum are overjoyed at the beautiful space they have created. We think you will be pleased as well. During this spring, the curators have been busy selecting the first pieces of sculpture we will show. The grand opening and annual membership meeting are scheduled for September 25, so mark your calendars now to be there. A new exhibition this summer is a multimedia installation of work by Jane Cassidy. It is an experience not to miss. As I write this column, the Search Committee is interviewing candidates to choose a new director. We hope to be able to introduce him or her to you in the next issue of OnExhibit. In the meanwhile, be sure to remember that the Museum is a great place to visit in the summer. Come see the art; join us for some of our many enrichment programs; and bring friends and family along with you. Many thanks for your continued support!

Best wishes, Edwin C. Bridges Interim Director

Past Perfected: Childhood in Art

8 | Current Exhibitions

Through October 28, 2018 Atrium, Blackmon, and Weil Galleries

Past Perfected features images of children in art from the 17th century to present day. Images of children frequently reflect societal changes in the ways that childhood has been perceived over time. The exhibition features traditional portraits that mimicked those of their adult contemporaries. These early examples were intended to portray the social and economic status of the child and their family. Later portraits often place more emphasis on the roles of children within the family and home. Finally, the artists of the 20th century began to consider the interior life of children and the psychology of young people as they approach maturity. From images that portray children as “small adults to those that celebrate youth as a time of happiness and exploration, artists have captured likenesses as well as the activities of children.

Bronzes derived from French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s (1840–1917) The Gates of Hell, 1880–1917, and Burghers of Calais, 1884–1889, on loan to the Museum from Iris Cantor, represent some of Rodin’s best-known art and demonstrate his radical practice of fragmenting figures for artistic effect.

In the 21st century, our busy, chaotic lives are filled with many distractions that claim our attention. Contemplative and meditative, these pieces allow us to slow down, reflect, and still our minds in order to be present in the moment.

Back to the Future

Dance and Ceremonial Objects of Traditional African Art

10 | Current Exhibitions

Through September 30, 2018 Newman and Folmar Galleries

One of the primary aspects of art in traditional African societies is its use in celebrating life passages at every stage— from birth, to the initiation of young people into maturity, to death. Still other rituals invite the intercession of spirits or ancestors into daily activity. This exhibition focuses on forms used in ceremonies, and particularly the masks that are central to dances and rituals. The works are from the Museum’s collection or are on loan from the private collection of Dileep and Martha Mehta. Thematic Variations

September 15 through November 18, 2018 Williamson, Hughes, and Wilson Galleries

Josef Albers (American, born Germany, 1888–1976), Untitled (Portfolio I, Folder 33), 1972, from the portfolio, Formulation: Articulation, screen print on paper, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Weil, Jr., in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Weil, Sr., 1989.11.34

mmfa.org | 11

Working with serial imagery, both Josef Albers (American, born Germany, 1888–1976) and Donald Judd (American, 1928–1994) created works that explore variations on color and form. With a great awareness and a respect for each other’s work, they both approached geometric shapes formally in order to examine the inherent aspects of any artwork: form, structure, and color. This pairing of their works demonstrates both their similar and contrasting approaches.

Views of the South

Photographs from The Do Good Fund September 29, 2018 through January 6, 2019 Goldman, Richard, and Rushton Stakely Galleries

Photographs have a distinctive ability to capture and preserve a view of an instant of time. Moreover, photographers often have an artistic vision for their work, with a focus on technique as well as content. The photos of The Do Good Fund reflect a combination of artistic practices with an exploration of life in the South over the last 70 years. Like many other forms of art, the photographs combine beauty with an invitation to reflect more deeply on their subjects—and look at them anew.

12 | Upcoming Exhibitions

The Do Good Fund was established in Columbus, Georgia, in 2012 to build a museum-quality collection of contemporary southern photographs, and to display them in museums, galleries, and other venues. The collection has grown to almost 500 photos created by 83 artists since World War II, and images from the collection have been featured in more than a dozen exhibitions across the South. The 50 or so photographs on view in Montgomery portray a range of themes, cultural environments, and landscapes that are distinctive to the American South.

1808 to 2017 / Goya to Erdreich

14 | Upcoming Exhibitions

September 29, 2018 through January 6, 2019 Weil Graphic Arts Study Center

Birmingham artist Beverly Erdreich’s latest series of drawings is inspired by her abiding interest in art history. In this installation, the Museum presents works that were conceived as variations of compositions by the great painter/ printmaker Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746–1828). Between 1810 and 1820 he created The Disasters of War, etchings inspired by the terrible violence that accompanied the Peninsular War of 1808–1814. Erdreich’s drawings are created atop reproductions of Disasters... etchings, bringing the stinging brutality of Goya’s interpretation of 19th-century atrocities into a modern context, addressing themes such as international terrorism and the fragility of our natural environment.

Art Auction

16 | Community Spotlight

Mar 1, 2018

Hundreds of art aficionados gathered for the 14th biennial Art Auction to benefit the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Association. This year’s event was a new format of beloved Museum traditions, combining the silent and live auction with a new “paddle raise” for bids to support the Museum’s Learning Through Art: Artist in Residence Program at Wares Ferry Road Elementary. The works of art were selected from galleries in New York, New Orleans, Charleston, and Santa Fe and artists from around the country. Many thanks to the dedicated teams of the Art Auction Committee, the newly created Contemporary Committee, and the Art Auction Selection Committee for their diligent work to support the Museum through this exciting fundraiser.
