WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Spend Some Time on You! It is about 1:00pm on the 2nd of January, the temperature outside is 65 degrees and the sun is shining bright. The farmlands are waiting to take their long winter nap, but the wind, rain and cold seem to be somewhere other than California. Still, with Christmas and New Year’s celebrations over, it is a great time to look in on a local business who just might be the best gift you could give yourself. Holiday Massage, located at 6730 Lone Tree Way, has been in business over ten years. It was easy to find and with their extended hours of Monday through Sunday from 9:30am to 10:00pm, I was able to peek in after work. I was greeted by a very friendly young lady who offered a ton of information about their services and gave me a quick tour. They are very focused on giving the customer the best service in the industry.

I went online before visiting and read some of the customer reviews. The one that stood out was from a person who regularly visited massage spas, specifically for foot reflexology. When the word BEST shows up in bold print, I always tend to notice. Having had plantar fasciitis for years, I know how wonderful it is to have a professional work out that issue so you can walk without pain. Holiday Massage has a wonderful reputation with their regular customers for that service alone. The thing I liked most was how affordable the services are. Most start at $40 and if you take advantage of the ad in the Grapevine, you can save even more. Now that counts ten extra points in my book. They also offer full body massage, both chair and table, and they specialize in hot stone therapy. Trust me when I tell you, this is worth trying. It is amazing how those stones allow the therapist to concentrate on those target areas while you relax with the warmth of the stone. Another weekly customer had lung surgery a few years ago and says that Jen is her saving grace. She is responsible for helping her through

the recovery process of surgery and allowing her body to heal properly though therapeutic massage. I know in talking with many of my friends and business acquaintances that massage therapy allows them to relax while relieving the stress of daily pressures. I personally enjoy that one hour of total relaxation and the overwhelming feeling of wellness when all of those darn toxins are leaving my body. Can’t wait to return for my appointment later this month. Burning Mouth Syndrome Burning Mouth Syndrome is a condition which some patients have to deal with every day of their lives. It is very frustrating to the patient and doctors because this condition interferes with eating and it could get worse as time goes by. There is no definitive test to diagnose this condition, nor is there a known cause nor a definitive treatment for this condition. In the US, about 2% to 5% acquire BMS and it especially strikes women between the ages of 50 and 70 years old. In women, it usually occurs 3 to 12 years after menopause and it occurs more in patients with other health problems. BMS patients frequently have anxiety, depression, diabetes, mineral deficiencies, or nutritional

deficiencies. The most common location for these symptoms are the lips and tongue and sometimes in the hard palate. Patients usually have an irritated or raw feeling in the mouth, but the area usually looks normal. Sometimes patients have a metallic taste in their mouth and are unable to detect bitter flavors and spicy and acidic foods increase their burning sensation. Patients should check the following symptoms that might be caused by BMS: • Persistent burning tongue and oral pain with no apparent dental cause. • Abnormal taste or dry feeling in the mouth which disappears when eating. • Burning sensations that may migrate across several areas in the mouth. Although the exact cause of BMS is unknown, the suspected primary cause could be deterioration of the nerves beneath the oral tissue. This deterioration is not visible, which is why the mouth appears normal. Other reasons could be dry mouth, due to

medications the patient is already taking fot other health problems, fungal infection, autoimmune infection, allergies to food and other health conditions like diabetes and thyroid problems. Diagnosis depends on isolating the cause, which is different depending on the cause of this condition. Treatment is usually palliative and left untreated, BMS has a poor prognosis and does take it’s toll on the quality of life. Therefore, it is recommended to get help from the dentist to get relief from the pain. Apollo Dental Care is the dental office of Dr. Sue Padavettan D.D.S. Remember: You want to make permanent changes, and these will take time to implement. Be Prepared for Lapses - A lapse is when you temporarily “fall off the wagon.” This is a normal part of the process; no one is perfect. It is important for you to take a moment to recognize that you got sidetracked, but don’t use it as an excuse to throw in the towel. Add A Little Pazzaz One of the least expensive ways to enhance the beauty of your home is by adding a fresh coat of paint - even if it’s the same color. The next best way is by upgrading interior trim, decorative moldings and by applying woodwork to walls, windows, ceilings and doorways. Wherever it is placed, interior trim adds beauty and architectural interest to the space. Interestingly, interior trim was born in classical Greek and Roman architecture (the reason most of it is so baroque). Although it was originally used only for building exteriors, decorative molding made it to interiors by the time of the Renaissance. Does this mean if we have a bunch of interior molding in our home we are “Renaissance Men”? Anyway, fancy interior trim was popular all the way through the 1940’s and was standard in most commercial and residential construction. By the 1950’s the use of elaborate moldings and trim was nixed by subdivision builders who were attempting to build cost effective homes

for mid-American families. Remember Henry Ford? And although this cost cutting ideology still holds true today most builders now commonly use taller baseboard, wider door trim and even a splash of crown molding now and then. Be careful, in many cases the trim is an upgrade. Anyway, the pervasive use of woodwork lies primarily with luxury homebuilders. Those who have decided to improve rather than move (thank you lousy housing economy) are installing decorative trim to their existing home, adding freshness and pazzaz to their digs. The most common types of interior trim are chair rails, wainscoting and raised panel molding on walls, casings around windows, baseboards where the walls meet the floor and cornice trim where the walls meet the ceiling. Crown molding is the most popular type of cornice trim today. Interior trim was originally made from plaster, but today it is commonly available in wood, particleboard and plastic and polycarbonate. Costs vary considerably depending on intricacy and size. Simple stock moldings start around a dollar per linear foot. Elaborate crown moldings may cost up to $15 per linear foot – or more – for moldings assembled from multiple pieces of trim. Professional installation, for

most one-piece installations, ranges from $4 to $8 per linear foot. Broken Screw Prevents Repair Q. We were going to replace our hot and cold handles on our tub, but the screw head is broken. Now we cant get it off. It’s only on the one side, the cold handle. Any ideas? - Dave A. First, drill through the screw. Start by using a pin punch to make a countersink hole dead center in the exposed end of the broken screw. This will insure that the drill bit won’t wobble as you begin drilling. The bit should be the same diameter as the screw (inside of thread to inside of thread). Once you have drilled the full depth of the screw, the handle will slip right off. Use a tap to clean the threads in the exposed valve stem. If the valve stem threads are damaged beyond repair the valve stem/assembly will have to be replaced. Make sure the house water is off before attempting this procedure. When the valve stem has been replaced, the existing screw hole will be ready to accept your new handle. By the way, while the water is off, why not replace both valves?

9 Steps For a Winter Ready Car

Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.

Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

The last thing any driver needs is to break down in cold, harsh winter weather. A vehicle check now before winter arrives is a sensible way to be car care aware and avoid the inconvenience of being stranded out in the cold and with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs, says the Car Care Council. “Winterizing your vehicle before the temperatures drop is a wise idea,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “An investment of an hour or two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind and help avoid the cost and hassle of car trouble during severe weather.” The Car Care Council recommends the following steps for winterizing your vehicle: If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter

Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.

Motorists should also keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Drivers should check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

GET YOUR GARDEN GROWING DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere. Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year. Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects. Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants. (Annuals and perennials, flowers, trees, herbs, tomatoes, cacti and succulents.
