With all of the Christmas decor getting put away and the last noise makers from New Years in the trash, the community seems to be off and running into the new year. The wonderful rain brought much needed water to the farmlands and the tractors are starting to appear in the fields. What a perfect time to look in on a local business who can help you with those New Year’s resolutions. If you are like my family, things that needed fixing in November got put on the “To Do” list. You know, the ceiling fan that stopped working or the hot tub that doesn’t get hot anymore. Both are certainly important to these cold winter days and Ross Perlee from CJ Bradley’s Electric is just the guy to call. This one man company has been in the Brentwood area since 2003. Ross has been in the electrical trade since 1986 and is “Your Power Connection.”

Now here is the good part, you can get a free estimate. That includes a small job like a new circuit or new construction. I know this to be true because members of our Grapevine family have used Ross and love to refer him to others. I know our readers enjoy our monthly snoop and may have taken advantage of my advise over the years to either shop a store or take advantage of the many services offered by local businesses, but the thought of touching electrical stuff has most of us a little scared. I can still remember that little zap I got as a kid when I did something I wasn’t supposed to do next to the duplex plug. I can’t even imagine tackling a job like putting in a ceiling fan. First off, many of us shouldn’t be on a ladder and secondly, what if it is wired wrong and you burn down the house. TRAVEL TIME Here we are with a New Year of 2016 and perhaps this will be your year of travel to GETAWAY FROM YOUR EVERYDAY. Happy 2016 to each and every one of you. We’ll tackle an item this month about the queries we get from time to time about what is a “good deal” for a cruise. A lot of things enter into that sort of thinking including length, itinerary, time of year and of course, type of stateroom. When you see an ad here in the Grapevine for us or in any other circular, you may be reading the prices are in most cases base costs for an interior room. And basically, an interior is a room without a window. Most of these rooms are the same size as an ocean view room minus the window. There are then other types of rooms to consider including rooms with verandas, mini suites and suites. There are all sorts of cruise ships and

cruise lines that will cater to just about anyone’s needs and desires.

Cruise ships are often referred to as floating hotels, so the best way then to compare is what you get on a cruise and what you get for a hotel room.

So if you want an average of what a “good deal” is on a cruise, in our opinion, any cruise of $150 or less per person per night can certainly be rated as a reasonable price for a cruise. Keep in mind however those exceptions we referenced above. Oftentimes it just may be a case of where you are going. Some itineraries command more in the way of shore expenses than others and those are your other items that you can throw in to the mix. Some people want to do everything and some people want to do less, and in some cases nothing in the way of shore excursions.

If you keep that thought in mind then staying in a high end 3 or 4 star hotel you get your nightly room and nothing else. A good upscale hotel is usually upward of $250 or so per night. Many 5 star hotels are in the vicinity of $400 per night so let’s now move on. With some exceptions most cruise lines include your room, meals, entertainment, fun and games and other items all as a part of your cruise fare. Some lines have upscale or specialty dining venues for a nominal charge, and you certainly would still be saving money, even if you did want to experience them. All you need then are any items you shop on board for and gambling money and yes, you can even charge the money for gambling to your stateroom account in most cases. Gratuities are added to your stateroom account and you will see these charges when your bill is delivered

Eating Disorders And Dental Health Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are two serious medical problems that most frequently affect adolescents and young adults. Approximately 24 million individuals in the US have demonstrated symptoms consistent with these disorders. Both men and women are affected by eating disorders but more common among women. Anorexia begins during adolescence or young adulthood and is characterized by excessive dieting that leads to severe weight loss and intense fear of gaining weight. Bulimia usually begins in adolescence or young adulthood and is characterized by recurrent and impulsive eating sprees, during which large quantities of food is consumed followed by gastric purging, fasting or excessive exercise to prevent weight gain. Individuals with anorexia may also have episodes of binge eating and vomiting. In the past affected girls

or women usually came from middle to high socioeconomic backgrounds but now eating disorders is common in all socioeconomic groups. There has been a rise in the number of reported cases of eating disorders among boys and men. Individuals of both genders who are involved in body building, cheerleading, dancing, swimming, figure skating, boxing and wrestling are at an increased risk for eating disorders. Dietary choices and the duration and frequency of binge/purge behavior are the primary causes of oral complications associated with anorexia and bulimia. Regurgitating the acidic contents of the stomach can result in loss of tooth structure if the practice is long standing and habitual. The enamel gets eroded away easily. We also believe that along with your selfimprovement New Year resolutions it’s a good idea to make a few home-improvement resolutions that will save time, money and keep your home in good shape. As with other resolutions, we suggest that you set realistic goals that are achievable. Moreover, it’s essential to prioritize your home improvement projects according to order of importance. We believe that your New Year home improvement resolutions list should begin with safety and security. Resolve to do things that will protect your home and family from injury and loss. What follows is our list of suggested New Year home improvement resolutions for you and your home. Fireplace: Have your fireplace, wood stove and chimney inspected by a certified chimney sweep at lease once annually to ensure that it is safe and operating at peak efficiency. A poorly burning appliance can result in carbon monoxide poisoning and a dirty or cracked chimney can result in an explosive fire that can level your home. Carbon Monoxide (CO): Dubbed the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that is a byproduct of poor combustion. Each year thousands of people – entire families among them – are killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. You can protect your family by having all fuel burning appliances – stoves, furnaces, water heaters, etc. – are in good working order and that burners are clean, adjusted and the flames are bright blue. Most local utility companies will perform this inspection at no charge or for a modest fee. If you don’t have carbon monoxide detectors,

install them. They should be installed on all levels of a home – including the basement where many furnaces and water heaters are located and near the bedrooms to alert sleeping adults and children of potential dangers. CO detectors are simple to install. Battery operated models can be place on a bookshelf or mounted on a ceiling, whereas AC models are simple plugged into an electrical outlet. Fire and Smoke: There are many improvement items that can be added to your resolution list when it comes to fire and smoke. First, if you don’t have smoke detectors, install them. If you live in an older home, chances are good that you have a smoke detector in a common hall adjacent to the bedrooms. That’s not enough protection. As with CO detectors, smoke detectors should be installed on every level of a home – including the basement – and in every bedroom. If your smoke detectors are more than ten years old replace them with a new model. Studies demonstrate that old smoke detectors fail – leaving you and your family with a false sense of security. When shopping for new smoke detectors consider installing a new wireless interconnected system that will trigger all alarms to sound when one goes off. This can be especially important in saving the lives of children and seniors who, otherwise, would not be able to be awakened. They’re easy to install and, as the name implies, don’t require any wiring. Hard wired systems are available for new construction. If you have smoke detectors installed in all of the right places and they are less than ten years old, that’s only part of the challenge. Resolve to check them at least once per month and keep them clean by periodically vacuuming them using an upholstery brush. Dust prevents the sensor from doing its job! And checking a detector to ensure that it is working involves more than pushing the “test” button – that only determines that the unit has power and that the alarm is functioning. Test the sensor wafting smoke from a candle or by using a smoke substitute in an aerosol can available at most home sensors and hardware stores. Slips and falls: Slips and falls are among the leading cause of serious home injuries, many of which result in death. Not surprising, a majority of interior falls occur in the bathroom – specifically in the bath tub. You can avoid a nasty fall by installing non skid decals to the surface of the tub. appliances, clear sheets that appear to be integral to the tub are now available. The key to a lasting installation is a clean tub. Scrub the tub with a nonabrasive cleanser, rinse, dry and wipe down with denatured alcohol. Another means of avoiding falls is by installing grab bars to make it easier to get in and out of the tub or shower. Towel bars or toilet tissue holders are poor substitutes. Use only approved grab bars such as those that you might find in a commercial bathroom. Equally important is the quality of installation. Grab bars must be solidly anchored to framing – studs or blocking – using screws. Exterior falls are especially prevalent during winter. Rain, snow and ice are common causes of nasty falls. Keep snow shoveled and use ice melt or sand on paths to prevent falls. Another source of nasty falls is a slimy moss that builds up on paths, patios, decks and steps. Use a mild solution of bleach, detergent and hot water (one-third cup powdered laundry detergent, one quart of liquid chlorine bleach and one gallon of hot water) to clean up the slimy surfaces. Mix up the solution and apply it with a pump garden sprayer. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, but don’t let it dry out. Work it in with a stiff bristle broom and rinse with fresh water. Using a pressure washer will make the job easier. In the spring when weather is warmer, consider using a sealer on concrete to prevent a feeding ground for moss and apply non skid pads to steps. Exterior lighting: Motion sensor lighting can prevent nasty falls and protect you and your home from intruders. Motion sensors recognize body heat in motion and turn on lighting for a brief period. They are especially useful if you have an armload of groceries or are searching for you house key in the dark. Motion sensors can be installed as an add-on to most existing fixtures or may be purchased as an integral part of a new fixture. In either case, install them at all exterior doors and in dark locations surrounding your home. Low voltage path lighting is another excellent means of avoiding a nasty fall and, as a bonus, it can perk up the appearance of your place. Here’s to a safe and Happy New Year!

3. Obtain current balance statements for all bank, mutual funds, 401k, and IRA accounts as of the date of death. Statements should be obtained on all accounts that decedent’s name appears as either sole or co-owner in any capacity and a copy of the signature card for each account.

What to Do When a Grantor/Trustee Dies? You have a Trust. That is great. You will avoid probate and save time and money. But, what do you need to do after the death of a Grantor/ Trustee? Is there a rush? Here is a list of things that should be done within 60-90 days after the death of a Grantor/Trustee. This is not a complete list, but it is a good start and will help you understand the responsibilities of the remaining Trustee or Successor Trustee. 1. Get several certified copies of the death certificate of the deceased person from the mortuary. You need to make sure you get enough for each financial institution in which funds of the estate are located and also for each piece of real estate owned by the deceased person. 2. Find the original Will and Trust documents. Read them carefully. They may have specific instructions for burial or memorial. They will tell you what to do!

4. Find all life insurance policies and annuity contracts, including beneficiary designation forms. 5. Find most recent personal income tax return and any gift, estate or generation skipping transfer tax returns ever filed by decedent. 6. Have an appraisal done on all real property. You should not delay in having this done. 7. Identify all the debts of the deceased person. If there is still a surviving Grantor, we advise the surviving Grantor to see an attorney to prepare the affidavit of death of Trustee and also to review the existing Trust to see if any additional work is necessary. If the Trust provided for a Bypass Trust to be established after the death of the first Grantor, then the Bypass Trust will need to be established.

If there is no surviving Grantor, an administrative trust will need to be established and a separate taxpayer identification number (TIN) for the living trust during the period of post-death administration. While it is possible to do post-death administration on your own, it is not usually advisable especially when there is more than one beneficiary. Trust administration should not be difficult. It does not have to been done in the first weeks after the death of the Grantor/Trustee. Don’t rush yourself or allow others to rush you. Take the necessary time to grieve.
