Sleep Disordered Breathing and Dental Health Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It is an illness affecting ten percent of children, twenty-four percent of adult males and nice percent of adult females. The comorbidities of sleep-disordered breathing are hypertension, obesity, diabetes, heart failure, heart attack, stroke and asthma. SDB is also associated with a seven-fold increase in the incidence of motor vehicle accidents. SDB is linked to accidents at work and home and also failed personal relationships. One of the most common symptoms of SDB is snoring, which causes general bedroom disharmony. The prevalence of SDB increases with age, weight gain and craniofacial abnormalities. SDB occurs when oropharyngial musculature loses its normal dynamic tone during sleep. The

tongue falls back into the oropharynx resulting in narrowing and ultimately obstructing the airway. The interruption of breathing results in decreased oxygen in the blood and increases the blood pressure, while normally the blood pressure falls during sleep. The turbulent airflow in the oropharynx generates a low frequency sound, commonly known as snoring, which is the primary symptom of SDB. As the disease progresses, daytime sleepiness becomes evident and the patient falls asleep in front of the television, at the movie theatre, and sometimes, tragically, behind the steering wheel! The dentist helps in the diagnosis and treating of SDB in numerous ways. Early Orthodontics helps to correct craniofacial abnormalities. Treatment ranges from lifestyle changes like avoiding smoking, alcohol and trying to maintain a steady stream of air through the nose by using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Device. Oral appliances help in treating snoring and mild SDB. Consulting with a sleep specialist, sleep test, palatal scarring procedures and some surgical therapies are other treatment options, depending upon the severity of the SDB.

SDB is such a prevalent condition and since it is recommended that adults should see the dentist at least once a year, it is easy to get help. If left untreated, it can lead to cardiovascular disease, hypertension and automobile accidents.

5 Things You Should Take Care of in the New Year The New Year is a time of renewal. It’s traditionally a time when many people resolve to free themselves of bad or unwanted habits and to set their sights on more positive activities and practices. That’s a good thing. We thought it fitting as you enter the New Year, that among your ‘other’ resolutions, you might want to consider making a few New Years resolutions for your home. Unlike traditional personal resolutions that are typically embarked upon ‘cold turkey’ on the first day of the year, New Years resolutions for your home can consist of a doable list that you will work to accomplish throughout the course of the year. The last thing that you want to do is sabotage yourself (and your partner or family) by setting unrealistic expectations both in terms of timing and budget. Your resolutions should consist of projects that can be accomplished during the year and utilizing available budget resources. We have taken the liberty of suggesting five New Years resolutions for your home. They consist of five general tasks – in order of importance — that we believe apply to most homes and that you should consider before endeavoring to create your dream bath or gourmet kitchen – though they are great resolutions for sure. • Safety – The best ‘home’ resolution that you can make in the New Year is to make your home safer for yourself and your family. Check to make sure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide

detectors are properly installed and in good working order. Test them regularly. Check major appliances for proper operation. Fuel burning appliances should be properly vented to the exterior and gas connections should be checked for leaks. Make sure that your electrical system is safe and in good working order. Flickering lights, burned fuses and popping breakers are signs of a problem. Make sure that handrails, grab bars and other safety devices are properly anchored. Consider hiring a home inspector for a more thorough report. • Preventative Maintenance – One of the best things that you can do for your budget in the New Year is to prevent small maintenance projects from becoming BIG repair nightmares with equally BIG bills! Our dad’s mantra; ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ has as much meaning today as it did when we first heard it as children. Repairing a leaking roof, sealing gaps in siding, painting bare wood, replacing damaged decking, patching cracks in concrete, caulking around sinks, tubs and showers and other preventative maintenance tasks will keep your home in tip top shape and save you lots of money in the long run. • Conserving Energy – A New Years resolution that should be on everyone’s list is conserving energy. Utility bills have gone through the roof and it doesn’t look like relief is anywhere in sight. Thus, one’s best defense is a strong offense. This one won’t cost an arm and a leg to do and you can perform most of the work yourself. Some energy conserving upgrades to consider: install a programmable thermostat; replace incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent lighting; prevent drafts with weather stripping around doors and windows, install low flow shower heads and aerators; fix leaking faucets; install Energy Star appliances; install energy efficient heating and cooling equipment; upgrade

Safety and Maintenance Tips for Busy Women A lot of women are living at a hectic pace these days. Many work full time. They take their kids to daycare and after-school activities. And a lot of women have the additional responsibility of being the household “car care manager.” While car care typically has been considered “men’s work,” research by the Car Care Council shows that women represent 60 percent of automotive service customers in North America , and women spend more than $300 billion annually on vehicle maintenance, repairs and used vehicles, according to American Woman Road and Travel (AWRT).

Air pressure: To help avoid under-inflation, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) recommends checking your tires’ air pressure at least once a month and before every long trip. Tires must be checked when they are cold - that is, before they have been run no more than one mile. Under-inflation is the leading cause of tire failures/blowouts. Tires lose air through a process called permeation. Changes in outdoor temperature can affect the rate at which a tire loses air. Typically, a tire loses one pound to two pounds of pressure per month, and even more in warm weather. Never “bleed” or reduce air pressure when tires are hot. It is normal for pressures to build up as a result of driving.
