A New Year can bring on thoughts of getting in shape, cleaning out the clutter in your house and car but what about simplifying the technology in your life? A “diet” from the technology that expands into all aspects of your home and work life. It seems like every device has turned into a mini-computer that texts, talks, syncs and computes. But do we really need every device to do everything?
We’ve The Monthly Grapevine® Moved 8440 Brentwood Blvd., Suite C Brentwood, CA 94513 Available in Person Monday - Thursday 8:30am - 4:30pm After hours & Friday by Appointment Office: 925.634.0880 Fax: 925.634.7822 Write or text us info@TMGmag.com 24/7 at MonthlyGrapevine.com
Here are a few steps that can help simplify the technology in your life can make you more serene and even more productive. Go Basic - Most people use computers for Web surfing, word processing and e-mail. So why get one with the latest feature film-making software? A basic desktop should suffice, without expensive processing chips and the bells and whistles needed for cutting-edge video. Or be thrifty and trendy by buying a tiny netbook for less than $300. Consider utility software that keeps computers running smoothly. There are several programs from brands like Norton, McAfee and others that keep your hard drive clean and running fast. Calling All Cell Phones! - Unless you’re a text-crazed teenager or senior executive, why choose a cell phone with more features than your laptop? Select a phone that does one thing really well -- make phone calls! Choose a phone with a simple display and only those buttons you really need, such as dedicated volume controls. And, if you’ll be traveling, consider a simple global phone. Open Sesame - From online banking to email, multiple passwords guard against identity theft. It’s even better to

remember them all. Consider selecting passwords thematically: Perhaps all your financial accounts should use variations of your favorite beer, or all email accounts should use your pet’s name. Remember, never use one password for all your accounts, change it up. Get a FREE password app for your phone to keep them all secure and organized. Coordinate Gadgets - Do you really need an MP3 player, camera, netbook, e-reader, and home PC? Make sure your gadgets don’t overlap in function. You may even help the environment, since gadgets are often less eco-friendly than paper and pen. Here’s to a serene and productive 2016, and remember please do not text and drive!

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?
is the best in the business.
on the freeway. Now this is where I need to tell you, if you have never taken a limo ride, stop dreaming and call these guys because it is extremely affordable and an absolute memory maker.
Don’t Dream About It, Do It! Well, here it is the third week in January and Mother Nature has finally decided to keep up with the headlines about “El Niño.” Mt. Diablo has had its peak covered in clouds most of the month and the dried up lawns are loving it. You don’t see any of those pickup trucks with water storage containers making their way over to Sunset Blvd. to pick up water to save their landscaping anymore. The only thing you see growing in the farmlands is a small crop of garlic. What a wonderful time to check in on a local company that can get you to any destination, rain or shine. First and foremost, I must say when I got this assignment I was thrilled to write about them since I have had the wonderful privilege of being on board on a trip to a concert at Wente Vineyards. You guessed it, I am talking about the ultimate limo ride brought to you by Elegant Escapes. I remember when I was young, dreaming about being inside one of those beauties as they drove by me
One of the things I loved is they have and A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. This is not easy to do, especially in that line of business. To top it off, their customer courtesies like calling you back right away, arriving on time, treating you like royalty and going the extra mile for the smallest detail are just the frosting on the cake. During your ride, you are not bounced around. You can actually drink the wonderful glass of champagne and relax and enjoy the ride. He is really great about taking a group shot with your camera so you can all keep those memories too.
Brian Scheumann has been in business since 2010 and gives new meaning to “Elegant!” Aside from his amazing personal touch for every passenger and their destination, his limos are PRESTINE!! For those of you who have taken a limo and were nervous about even sitting on the seats, let alone drinking out of those glasses dangling in the cockpit, give Brian a call and let him show you how it is supposed to be done. Everything sparkles, it looks brand new, smells amazing and every time you get back in if you are wine tasting, bar hopping or just taking you home, it is as beautiful as when he picked you up. Now, stop reading and check out ALL the great comments on YELP. No matter who was writing, each of them had a wonderful story to tell about their “own” personal experience. So, now that you are back, go to your calendar and schedule a date that you can pick up some friends to go out to dinner and drink all you want (you know what I mean) because you have your very own “designated driver.” And if you are in a wedding party, you better call now because the word is out. Elegant Escapes
Elegant Escapes
So, whether you are on your way to the airport, getting married or just wanting to take your wonderful spouse out on the town, you simply must find their ad in our magazine and give them a call. Trust me and the entire Grapevine family when we say, the Monthly Grapevine gives Elegant Escapes TEN sparkly glasses of champagne for making everyone’s “dream” come true. Who will be snooped next? It could be you!

HEALTH
FOR YOUR DENTAL HEALTH
Oral Cancer There are different kinds of oral cancer but the most common is oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Oral squamous cell carcinoma is an aggressive tumor and more than 90 percent of the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma are in the mouth. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation approximately 44,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and 8000 deaths will occur due to this disease. The five year survival rate, of those newly diagnosed, oral cancer has not significantly improved over the last fifty years. The cost of treatment after diagnosis can be quite staggering. It has been estimated that approximately 3.2 billion dollars is spent annually in the US alone to treat these cancers. OSCC is an aggressive tumor with low response to chemotherapy and basic
resistance to most standard-of-care anticancer drugs. The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, testicular cancer and skin cancer. In fact, oral cancer is three times more common than cervical cancer and men are twice likely to be diagnosed and oral cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer in African American men. Who is at risk? Everyone! Twenty five percent of oral cancer patients are nonsmokers and nondrinkers. The other seventy five percent have the classic risk factors like smoking, chewing tobacco, and alcohol consumption and betelquid chewing. The gold standard for screening and detection is visual and tactile palpation done by the dentist or a physician during a regular dental or physical exam. This disease is not easy to identify because normal looking tissue may often hide the disease beneath it in its early stages. If the cancer is identified in Stage one or two the overall survival rate is greater than 80 percent. But, if it has advanced to stage three or four, the five year survival rate falls to 20 percent and it is impossible to treat without radical surgical intervention and significant loss of patient’s quality of life. The definitive test to diagnose is surgical biopsy.
It is extremely important to check with the dentist if you suspect any new growth in the mouth or change in the tissue color or texture and keep up with the regular checkups so there are no surprises. For more information on OSCC or if you, or someone you know, suspects they have OSCC, visit cancercenter.com/oral. Apollo Dental Care is the dental office of Dr. Sue Padavettan, D.D.S. Established by Bill Todd, their motto of “Quality Through Service” has earned them a reputation as the friendliest and most effective locally-owned pest control companies around. They believe their commitment to quality starts with their staff. “We are a very family-oriented company. We like to accommodate our staff when their family needs them.” Discovery Pest Control provides the most complete pest elimination treatment for your home interior and exterior. From the baseboards to the fence line, our service is thorough. Although many of the types of pests have remained the same over the last 32 years, the methods they use have not. “We invest in our staffs education so we can provide our customers with the most advanced pest solutions.” says Rob Wellington. “We have come to know the conditions that breed bugs and other pests in your community.” Their unique successful components are their all inclusive pest control treatment and service guarantee. They treat ants, mice, rats, cockroaches, moths, and other common bugs and insects, including bees and wasps, as well as, pigeon control and weed abatement. If your pest problem
reoccurs, they will return to resolve the problem. Essentially, they take care of your home and property as if it were their own and work hard to always be there for their customers. With offices in Brentwood and Stanislaus County, they serve a wide area of East Contra Costa County, Pleasanton, San Ramon, Livermore, Lathrop, Tracy and Manteca. Their specialty services for pigeon control and fly control, help not only their residential customers but the local dairies, farms and ranches. This is keeping the crew busy, and Rob says the company is growing, mainly due to customer satisfaction and referrals.

ON THE HOUSE
On Composting One of us began his career in home improvement at the ripe old age of nine working as a gardener/handyman for an aunt and uncle who had a bigger than average home and garden. The job required lots of time – after school three days each week and all day on Saturday. The projects ranged from cleaning wood floors, painting wood windows and repairing fencing to pulling weeds, mowing lawns, trimming hedges, pruning roses and fertilizing plants. The job, scheduled to last for only a summer, became a nine year odyssey and the beginning of a life long interest in gardening and home improvement. At the time, it seemed like a lot of work for a youngster and indeed it was. In retrospect, though a valuable experience and while we strongly believe in the work ethic, we have encouraged our kids to pepper a bit of work experience with youth appropriate activities such as scouts, sports, dance, etc. The landscape maintenance end of the job generated tons of material that was hauled off by the local garbage company. Leaves, lawn clippings, weeds, shrub and hedge trimmings would easily fill up to a dozen garbage cans in a week’s time. That was before America’s landfills began to overflow and recycling became the politically correct and environmentally friendly thing to do. At the same time, our aunt was spending a fortune on fertilizer to keep her garden green and filled with colorful flowers. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until adulthood that we learned that our aunt and uncle could have saved a veritable fortune in garbage fees and commercial fertilizer by manufacturing their own fertilizer through the miracle of composting. The very materials that the garbage company was hauling away – grass clippings, leaves, kitchen scraps (not including meat and bones), weeds, etc. — were the perfect ingredients for a compost pile. Combined with air, moisture and manure and properly
layered and covered in just a few weeks, voila, you’ll have a perfect batch of compost. Compost can be used to amend soil for lawns, gardens, ornamental plants, trees and potted plants. And, like anything, it can be as much or as little work as you want to make of it. The more energy you put into it, the faster you will produce the finished product. One of the most appealing aspects of a compost pile is that it can be located virtually anywhere in your yard except up against your house or any structure that you value such as a fence or garden structure. The same macro organisms (bugs, etc.) that aid in the composting process can become a pest control problem. Thus, it is recommended that a compost pile or bin be kept at least two feet from any structure. All you need to build and maintain a compost heap is a pitchfork, shovel, water hose, axe, string trimmer, wheelbarrow, garden gloves and one or more compost bin(s). Although a bin is not necessary, it is useful in keeping your pile looking neat and it helps retain moisture and heat – both of which are integral to the process. A bin will also protect the material from being disturbed or scattered by wind or foul weather. A bin can also prevent wayward animals and pests from making a meal out of the contents of your compost pile. A compost bin can be built from scratch or many styles of ready made models are available for purchase. For example, a nine foot length of welded wire fabric (three feet high) will make a good bin when formed into a circle and wired together at the ends. Another equally popular design consists of chicken wire nailed to a frame made of 2 by 4’s. Use redwood or cedar to improve lasting quality and avoid pressure treated material to prevent toxicity in the compost – especially if it is to be used in a vegetable garden. A very inexpensive bin can be made using four wooden pallets to create a box. These bins cost almost nothing and most of the construction work is already done for you. An added bonus is that you are diverting pallets that might otherwise end

up in landfill sites. It doesn’t get much more environmentally friendly than that. Assembling the “pallet bin” is easy; simply screw or wire three of the pallets together to create three sides of a box. Attach bolt latches to the front edge of the bin and to the remaining pallet to make a removable door. Irregardless of the materials used to construct your compost bin, it needs to be open sided to allow for good air circulation – a must for composting. The size of the bin should range from three to five feet across and should be no more than five feet high. The secret to a successful compost pile is a lot like making perfect lasagna – it’s all about layers. The classic organic gardener’s recipe for compost calls for a layer of vegetable matter about six inches thick, a layer of manure about two inches thick – no pet manure please – and a thin layer of soil with ground limestone added. This layering sequence is repeated until the pile is three to five feet high. A small depression or well is made at the top for watering. After about two weeks, bacteria will have converted much of the material in the pile to compost and caused it to heat up – another necessary ingredient in the composting process. By this time, the bacteria will probably have run out of oxygen and the pile must, therefore, be turned to be aerated. In another week or two the compost can be worked into your soil. Large clumps that remain can be recomposted in the next batch. A compost pile loves kitchen waste such as coffee grounds and egg shells. Even feathers, wood ashes, ground stone and shells can be composted along with yard wastes. Avoid meat and bones, large amounts of sawdust, pet manure and metallic or plastic objects. Composting is one of the most direct and beneficial forms of recycling around.

LAW OFFICE OF MICHAEL PRIMUS
Receive a 1099 for a forgiven debt? Fight back! This time of year I routinely get inquiries about forgiven debts and the dreaded form 1099. As a general proposition, the tax laws create an obligation to pay tax whenever the taxpayer’s finances improve. For example, a paycheck improves my financial position and creates an obligation to pay tax on that income. With a paycheck the taxes are taken out directly and remitted by my employer. With that in mind, if I owed $30,000 but was able to resolve the debt by paying $5,000 I would have improved my financial position and might assume I would owe tax on the $25,000. Whether I owe the tax depends on my circumstances. A couple examples of forgiven debt provide context before I delve into the rule and its exceptions. Debts can be forgiven in several ways, the most common being settlements
Either of these exclusions will render the forgiven money non-taxable, you do not need both. All you need to do is attach IRS form 982 to your tax return to clarify why the income reflected in the 1099 is nontaxable. The exceptions are also discussed in IRS form 982 which can be found on the IRS website at www.irs.gov. At the Law Office of Michael Primus we have helped thousands of clients get out of debt, stop wage garnishments, and start fresh through bankruptcy. If you live in Contra Costa, Alameda or Solano counties and have debt problems, contact us for a free in-office consultation. We have offices in Walnut Creek, Antioch, and Hercules.
1. The debt was forgiven in bankruptcy. This requires filing bankruptcy and obtaining a discharge from the bankruptcy court.

2. You were insolvent when the debt was forgiven. This does not require a bankruptcy. It means your debts exceeded the value of your assets at the time the debt was forgiven. The IRS rarely challenges a claim of insolvency.
and bankruptcy. In a settlement the lender agrees to accept a sum of money to resolve a debt. Generally the amount will be in the range of thirty to sixty cents on the dollar of the balance owed. That means a $5,000 debt might be settled for $1,500 to $3,000. Upon payment the borrower will have no further obligation to the lender. Settlements are common when the original debt was for a credit card or personal loan. Bankruptcy can allow a person to pay little or nothing and have no further obligation to the lender. The bankruptcy system refers to forgiven debts as having been discharged. Regardless of the terminology, the point is the money is no longer owed. That may seem like the end of the story but later the borrower may get a 1099. Form 1099 reflects cancellation of debt by the lender, it does not create a taxable event. In fact, very few people should pay the tax. Unfortunately many people prepare their own tax returns and mistakenly pay the tax. The IRS cheerfully accepts the money! The rule making cancelled debt taxable has two major exclusions discussed below.

TIMELY FEATURE
• Make it an adventure. Just because you have an ultimate destination doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy fun stuff in between. Check your route for family-friendly stops along the way, such as a zoo, park or even toy store to give kids something to look forward to while breaking the trip into manageable pieces.
Tips to Make Family Road Trips Smooth Sailing Hitting the road with the family? Experts say there’s no reason to view the journey itself as a pre-vacation chore. “Travel doesn’t just have to be about getting to where you’re going,” says Tara Trompeter, managing editor at Autotrader. “Family time in the car can be a great opportunity for making memories and a little bit of planning before you get on the road will go a long way toward filling the experience with more fun and laughter for everyone involved.” To keep road warriors comfortable and content on their drives, Autotrader editors are offering some of their top travel tips: • Prepare your vehicle. Do a quick check on the essentials before you head out. Check the wear and pressure on your tires, and be sure your fluids (oil, coolant and wiper fluid) are topped off.
• Keep little ones engaged. Technology features like built-in screens and DVD players can be saviors on the road. If your car doesn’t come equipped with these, consider bringing along a handheld device on which little ones can play games or watch videos. And if technology isn’t your thing, remember that magnetized board games and word games can work just as well. • Bring snacks. Greasy food isn’t the best for staying alert -- or feeling good -- while road tripping. Instead of relying on fast food, bring along lots of small, healthy snacks to keep kids (and adults) content. Great options include fruits and vegetables that are easy to eat and fuss-free, like carrot sticks, bananas and apples. • Have patience! Between road congestion, frequent stops and bad weather, travel time can take longer than anticipated. Allow and plan for extra travel
time, and you’ll have a better chance of arriving safely and stress-free. • Consider an upgrade. Before setting off, consider upgrading your old gasguzzler to a new one that’s energy efficient and comfortable enough to make the long journey with the family in tow. To help, Autotrader rounded up a list of 10 fuel-efficient family cars that boast affordability, roomy interiors and a fuel efficient 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Among their picks are the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Optima, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Outback and the Toyota Camry. To learn more, visit autotrader.com. With the right strategies for happy travels, you can begin your vacation the second you hit the road.
