For many couples, there’s nothing more exciting than creating wedding wish lists. Forty-five percent of U.S. adults who are or ever have been married or engaged have had a bridal registry, according to a recent online survey.

In keeping with our theme for Brides this month, I thought it would be a good idea to publish some ideas for your gift registry.
• Sticking too much to tradition: Don’t register for traditional items, like silver flatware or formal china, unless you will truly use them. Again, take into account the space in your home, not too many people have room for two sets of dishes in their kitchen unless they have a hutch.

Tips For Your Gift Registry
• Aspirational registering: Register for pieces that fit who you really are, not who you want to be. Don’t register for things you think people want to you register for, think outside the department store. Perhaps you’d like garden tools or power tools (I know a lot of husbands would like that!)

• Including impractical items: Think twice before registering for large or specialty products that take up storage space but may never get used, like a panini press or ice cream maker. Take into account the space in your home and how much are your really going to use that deep fryer?

Registries can be helpful to avoid receiving disappointing gifts. However, even with a registry, many couples realize their lists may have been less than ideal. If you’re headed down the aisle, plan ahead to avoid these common registry mistakes.
www.monthlygrapevine.com VOL. 22 NO. 2 • 33,248 & GROWING
Choose a pattern or style that came be dressed up or down and register for fancy placemats and napkins for holidays and parties. Also, very important, make sure you like your dishes you will be eating on them everyday for a long time! • Gifts that make your daily life better: a kitchen faucet with a pulldown hose for easy cleanup, or rainshower showerhead to provide relaxation after a long day. Registering at a home improvement store would not be the worst thing (all the mother’s are cringing) honestly, they have frames, lamps, light fixtures, mirrors all sorts of items to decorate your home. Imagine when you get that gallon of paint in the color you love! Exciting right? Remember, your guests want to give you what you’ll use and what you’ll love! The more thought you put into your gift registry the less thought they will have to! Sonya North, CEO

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?
Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend! The rain finally stopped on this 27th day in January and the farmlands are starting to dry out. The days are crystal clear and it looks like the forecast will only bring us small bursts of rain. This allows for a wonderful view of Mt. Diablo and the lush green hills surrounding its beauty. What a great time to check in on a local business who brings their own sparkle to our area. The luxury of snooping this local business is I never turn down an invitation to visit a jewelry store. Broder Jewelry Design is located at 640 Harvest Park Drive right down the street from the bowling alley. As a regular customer, I knew the routine of ringing the bell to have Mark Broder, owner and designer buzz me in. I really like this feature as it not only allows him time to greet you personally but keeps his store ultra safe. As usual, he was talking with a customer upon my arrival and greeted me with his wonderful smile.
his design services are complimentary? Another two points. He also does engraving for that very special gift.
For the past several years, I have known many customers of his who have had the most amazing work done, whether it be for a special occasion or choosing the right diamond and setting for a wedding. I have honestly heard only great things about Mark and his ability to bring your vision to life. Whether you’re looking for diamonds, gemstones or a one-of-a-kind custom creation in gold or platinum, he will work one on one with you to design and create the perfect piece of jewelry.
I think what I like most about Broder Jewelry Design is Mark himself. No matter what you may need or even if you just have a question, he takes the time to give you that extra special customer service that you don’t get in those large chain stores. His website at www.broderjewery.com is filled with tons of information about Mark, his amazing designs and testimonials from many of his customers. He truly wants to have the opportunity to meet you and become your family jeweler for years to come.
He has complete repair services including ring sizing, new prongs and tips, and just about any type of repair you may need. Nearly all repairs are done on the premises and he also specializes in antique restoration. I spoke with him about giving me an appraisal on several pieces of jewelry that I have accumulated over the years and he said he would love to help. This counts two extra points in that I totally trust him and he is one of the most knowledgeable jewelers I have ever known. In addition to custom designing, Mark can also order chains, bracelets, charms, pendants, earrings and rings from numerous designer catalogs. He is so dedicated, many of these orders can be available the next day. Did I mention that

“As a start up Delta cruise business in 2011, we struggled to get the word out to the community that Captain Morgans Delta Adventures was now offering fun and unique cruises all over the Delta. We launched several advertising campaigns and then tracked those efforts to determine which method of advertising was most effective in reaching our target audience. As we grew from about 16 cruises in 2011, to 119 cruises in 2014, we were able to determine through customer surveys that the vast majority of our cruise bookings were directly related to the ad's we ran each month in the Monthly Grapevine Magazine. Thank you very much Monthly Grapevine, we could not have been voted Business Of The Year for 2014 without you!” Frank Morgan - Owner Captain Morgans Delta Adventures

for 500 years and has reinvented itself in the 21st Century with modern extreme warriors at the helm.
This month we want to remind you and ask you to consider attending the Sonora Celtic Faire. It is in the Motherlode country in March and we will be there all day Saturday and Sunday. Advanced tickets can be purchased from the website for the venue at a discounted price. What is the Sonora Celtic Faire? Here is a brief overview and we hope to see all of you there. NOTHING LIKE IT ANYWHERE! On March 10-12th, 2017, the Gold Rush community of Sonora, California will showcase the sights and sounds of medieval combat. This is no dinner show or acting troupe trying to play make believe, this is hardcore full contact jousting. A sport that has had longevity surpassing football, baseball, and modern basketball combined. In fact the sport was practiced
For those that like to shop, 2017 will offer the largest Celtic Marketplace. Hundreds of craftsman, artisans, and importers will all have the latest and most sought after Celtic gifts for sale.
Modern jousting features armored clad sportsman on large draft horses. The object of the game is to unhorse the other rider for maximum points. Challengers in the rain or snow if need be! At the 2017 Sonora event, the public will be able to enjoy the sporting event from an arena that is 70% covered from the effects of mother nature, so rain, shine, or snow, all challenges will be accepted.
For the wee-ones, special stage acts and venues will amaze and excite the heart & soul. The faire will feature a fire-breathing dragon, extreme magicians & juggling acts, a sword swallower, fire wizards, and a children’s story-book village with characters. The Sonora Celtic Faire offers something for every age and interest, from whiskey tasting and modern Scottish Clans to Celtic warriors battling it out in a large arena.
Music has always been the driving force of Sonora. Being that it was the very first Celtic Faire on the West Coast of America. Featured bands this year include the ever popular Celtica & Wicked Tinkers. It’s always a guarantee that when the downbeat hits with their brand of music, everyone in the place will be jumping with Celtic pride.
Rain, shine, or snow, the Sonora Celtic Faire and International Ultimate Jousting Championships will take place on March 10-12th, at the Motherlode Fairgrounds in Sonora California.
For the more traditional aspects of Celtic Music, featuring the Irish Harp and Fiddle, bands like Cooking with Turf, Molly’s Revenge, Golden Bough, Banshee in the Kitchen, Black Irish Band, will be there to soothe the Celtic spirit. For those that like motion with music, there will be numerous marching bagpipe bands around every corner with dancers in tow….

HEALTH
FOR YOUR DENTAL HEALTH
to increase fruit and vegetable intake may promote juice as an alternative.
Early Childhood Cavities And Intake Of 100 Percent Fruit Juice The US Food and Drug Administration defines the term 100 per cent juice as a beverage made from fruit. The difference between 100 per cent fruit juice differs from juice drinks which are diluted with water and may contain added sugars or other ingredients. Since the 1990’s the beverage consumption patterns of children have changed. More children are drinking beverages with added sugar such as sodas, soda pop, juice drinks and other sugary drinks instead of milk and water. One hundred per cent fruit juice is another beverage that has had a large increase in consumption. Some factors linked to the increase in consumption of 100 percent fruit juice is that it is a convenient snack for children, it is considered a healthy beverage choice, it costs less than milk and marketing efforts
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that young children limit their consumption of 100 percent juice to four to six ounces per day. Despite this recommendation intake of 100 percent juice among young children remains high with the average preschooler consuming twice the recommended amount of this fruit juice every day. With the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act in effect since 2010 the US Department of Agriculture is promoting eating whole fruit instead of 100 percent fruit juice in children’s school meals to help prevent childhood obesity. Even though cavities have remarkably reduced over thirty years it is still a silent epidemic. About 20% of children between 2 and 4 years have detectable cavities and by seventeen years of age 80% of young people have had a cavity. Diet plays an important role in a person’s pre-disposition to developing cavities. Excessive intake of or continuously sipping fruit juices can be a risk to dental health because these juices are highly acidic which can cause cavities. Currently high emphasis is placed on the relationship between drinks and snacks and obesity but there is a need for equal

Laser Advantage All people, men and women alike, have times when they feel the need to increase their confidence by improving their appearance and overall sense of self. Whether you want to enhance or correct what you were born with or simply aspire to reduce the ravages of time, Laser Advantage of Antioch can help you attain your desired image. Staffed by Dr. James Edwards and Marti Edwards, RN, the facility offers clients over 15 years of experience in aesthetic healthcare. Laser Advantage provides hair and vein removal and skin rejuvenating services such as Laser Genesis, Cutera Titan skin tightening, and microdermabrasion facials that render a healthier and younger-looking persona. Trained professionals can remove unsightly brown spots, administer Botox, and provide Fraxel Laser treatments for resurfaced skin with a flawless finish. They can remove bothersome moles or skin tags. Should you have old tattoos that no longer inspire you, they can provide maximum tattoo removal that leaves the surrounding skin areas untouched. Demanding schedules have us searching for time-saving alternatives. If you are tired of shaving unwanted facial or body hair, visit Laser Advantage and have it removed with the use of their Cutera CoolGlide Xeo Laser. Considered the
best hair removal system on the market, it is suitable for all skin tones and types regardless of a light, dark, or tanned complexion. Moreover, the CoolGlide Xeo Laser is ideal for vein removal. It remedies a wide variety of vessels from small spider veins to deep blue reticular veins quickly and effectively. Blood blisters known as hemangiomas respond excellently to this type of therapy, and patients with port-wine stains and other vascular lesions have reported astounding results. The Laser Genesis Skin Therapy system is an innovative way to promote a vibrant and luminous visage. Skin damage resulting from active lifestyles combined with the aging process such as sun damage, redness, large pores, scars, and fine lines and wrinkles on the face and body can be combatted with this method that is scientifically proven to increase collagen production. Additionally, Cutera Titan is offered for an all-natural option. This skin and collagen tightening system improves the looseness of skin and is perfect for the face, arms, abdomen, and thighs without intrusive surgery, recovery time, or injections. Countless people have improved their looks by using Botox. A quick and minimally invasive way of smoothing out facial lines and “crow’s- feet” around the eyes, the results are visibly noticeable for four months. Laser Advantage also offers Photo Genesis to improve skin texture and reduce pigmentation spots and redness.
Fraxel Laser treatment for skin resurfacing is a revolutionary new process that delivers a pristine and glowing complexion that subtracts years from your countenance. It works by treating thousands of microscopic areas of the skin and penetrates beneath the surface to eliminate old and damaged skin cells. Fraxel Laser effectually addresses annoyances such as wrinkles, age and sun spots, brown spots, pregnancy mask, acne and surgical scars, and stretch marks and stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to replace old skin with new. How we perceive ourselves and the way others perceive us is an important and vital aspect of healthy and positive living. At Laser Advantage, the goal is to make you happy with what you see when you gaze upon your reflection in the mirror. Rest assured, you will receive the best of care from professionals who strongly emphasize safety and fully understand the self-reflective needs of their patients.
Laser Advantage is located at 3725
Lone Tree Way, Ste. C in Antioch. They can be contacted at 925-754-4881 or laseradvantageEC.com.

ON THE HOUSE
How Humidity Can Damage Your Home in the Winter The cold season is harsh on your health, but it can also do damage to the home. Keeping humidity inside during the wintry weather helps your skin and throat not dry out, but you may be surprised to hear that humidity puts stress on your home’s health, too. If your humidity levels are too low, your house and furniture will experience deterioration, and particularly nasty molds and bacteria will thrive. Your house is supposed to keep you insulated from the cold, not give you one! Learn why humidity drops in the winter and what percentage to keep in your home to ensure a balanced environment for your overall health and that of your home. With a few strategies, you can keep humidity at the perfect level. Why Humidity Drops and Where to Keep It Humidity levels drop in winter because cold air doesn’t hold moisture the way warm air does. The lower the temperature, the less water exists as vapor. As the cold air mixes with the ventilation, or infiltrates through other means, there’s less water vapor in the indoor air. When levels go low, ambient air feels cooler to the skin, and you crank up the heat to make yourself feel more comfortable. So, what humidity levels should be kept in the home to deter such damage? Ideal conditions are between 35 and 45 percent in the home. In energy-efficient homes, that number can be on the higher end of the spectrum. Under 30 percent is too dry, and over 50 percent is too much humidity.
There’s too much humidity if you notice fogging and condensation on windows and moisture or mold buildup on the walls. Cracking paint or increased occurrences of static electricity are also signs of increased humidity in the home. If the humidity is too high, mold and bacteria growth become a risk. Strategies to Prevent Mold and Bacteria Growth You must take into consideration what humidity-generating activities occur in your household, adjusting the humidity accordingly. Don’t overdo it, though — especially when you’ve got soup on the stove, and someone’s in the shower. Regulate the humidity as you go about your daily routine. Use these techniques to prevent mold and bacteria from spreading:
Your preferred level humidity may be at the lower or higher end of the spectrum, but should remain within 35 to 45 percent to be on the safe side. Too much humidity in the home creates a breeding ground for bacteria and mold growth and increases health risks, and too little humidity poses health risks, too. Take into account which of your daily household activities increase or decrease humidity levels. Utilize exhaust fans, shower liners, humidifiers and other strategies to keep humidity at a steady and comfortable level in the home. Your home and energy bill will thank you!
• Seal up air leaks in your home for winter and save on the energy bill. Leaks commonly occur in the attic and basement, but also remember to insulate around recessed lights, seal open stud cavities, close chimney and flue gaps, and tighten areas around old windows and doors. • Turn on exhaust fans over the stove and in the bathroom to regulate moisture from humidity-building household activities. Cook with covered pots. Take shorter or cooler showers. Opening windows a crack will also help. • Add a little moisture back by using a drying rack in a well-ventilated room to hang dry delicates and towels, which are quick to dry. • Use a shower liner to prevent mold and germ growth in the bathroom, as standing

Fastrak In the Bay Area, with all the bridges and corresponding tolls, it is not uncommon for people to amass unpaid Fastrak fines. If you whiz through the Fastrak lane without sufficient funds in your Fastrak account, the owner of the vehicle will be fined. I have seen people use the Fastrak lane without a valid transponder for months or years amassing thousands of dollars in tolls and fines. Technically the charges are owed to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission but collection is managed by the Bay Area Toll Authority. In turn, the Bay Area Toll Authority can refer the unpaid fines to the Franchise Tax Board as well as the Department of Motor Vehicles. The Franchise Tax Board can intercept tax refunds, levy bank accounts or both to collect the money. More daunting, a person’s driver’s license can be suspended if the charges remain unpaid. All this creates a confusing maze of governmental agencies to deal with.

Amy Bright My name is Amy Bright and I have lived in Discovery Bay and this amazing community since 1998. My high school sweetheart, Jason, and I were married in 1997 and moved here from San Jose where we both were born and raised. Since moving here we have had three children, who range from the ages of 17 to 7. Our children have had wonderful academic and social upbringing in this community and we are so thankful to God for the ability to raise our family in such a loving small town. I started my sales career in the Silicon Valley as a corporate Distribution Sales Rep. I absolutely loved and thrived in that position, becoming part of the Presidents Sales club in my first six months. When my first child was born my husband Jason and I decided that having two full time traveling Sales Reps was not the ideal situation for our family so I decided to stay at home to help raise our family. From the minute I made this choice I knew

Bankruptcy forgives many debts but, at times, the law is unclear. For instance, bankruptcy law forgives governmental claims for reimbursement of actual expenses incurred by the government but has an exception for governmental fines, penalties and some tax debts. Said another way, if the charge (regardless of whether it is called a ticket, fine or something else) is intended to punish the wrongdoer it will not be forgiven. If, however, the purpose is to reimburse the government for an expense the charge will be forgiven. Parking tickets owed to local government are a common example. Some courts, including a court in San Francisco, interpret bankruptcy law to forgive parking tickets and related late charges when a bankruptcy is filed. If the debt is forgiven there is no basis to withhold a driver’s license or vehicle registration. Other courts may consider a parking ticket quasi-criminal and allow any charges to survive a bankruptcy. Fastrak is a collection method for bridge (or express lane) tolls. The question becomes what is the purpose of a Bay Area bridge toll and a related fine for failure to pay the toll? According to the California Department of Transportation, the bulk of Bay Bridge toll revenues
that one day I would return to being that top producing sales agent but that my first priority for this season of my life was to mold my children into becoming their best and fullest potential and then when I had laid that foundation for all of them I will be able to continue with my dreams and goals for my own personal success. I graduated from college in 1996 but had never applied the credentials I had earned and so I figured this might be the ideal time to do so. After staying home for four years as a child care provider I became a Preschool Teacher here in our community and continued that position for nine school years. I loved teaching and building tight relations with not just the children of our community but also the families. When my two oldest had moved on to other schools I chose to retire from teaching and start a new life chapter. I became a local Real Estate Agent and quickly realized how much I had missed the sales profession. As a Real Estate Professional I was able to sharpen my sales skills, which had become a little rusty from nonuse, and network within our local community. I’m looking forward to my new position as the Grapevine’s Advertising Sales Representative.

are turned over to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and then redistributed to BART, MUNI and Alameda County Transit. Accordingly, it seems tolls are used to reimburse actual government expenses and therefore would be dischargeable in bankruptcy. The fine for failure to pay a toll, which is defined as all charges beyond the actual toll(s), appears to be for the purpose of punishing the wrongdoer and reimbursing the government for the costs of collection. This dual purpose could make that portion of the claim nondischargeable in bankruptcy. As of this writing (January 2017) I have seen Fastrak tolls and fines being forgiven entirely in bankruptcy. Today, my advice is to list Fastrak, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Toll Authority in any bankruptcy involving Fastrak charges and expect the claim to be forgiven. Once forgiven any hold on a driver’s license or vehicle registration will be lifted and the claim erased for all purposes. This is an evolving area of law and is subject to change.

Who’s Who... in East County
The harmful effects of smog pollution in the air we breathe has become a matter of increasing concern, and people now recognize that everyone must do their part to protect the environment or there will be serious consequences. Here in California, the state requires all automobiles to be smog tested to reduce excessive discharges into the atmosphere. Brentwood Smog Express offers vehicle inspections, testing for emissions and performance, maintenance, and registration services, granting you the opportunity to mutually protect your vehicle and the environment. Per the Department of Environmental Protection, smog exposure leads to health issues such as irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, wheezing, coughing, asthma, and other serious breathing complications. Unhealthy air exacerbates heart and lung problems. Clearly, smog is a problem we all share. In addition to being detrimental to humans, pollution poses a variety of other environmental threats. Smog distresses wildlife, agriculture, and our stratosphere. It is our responsibility to restore and retain the Earth’s delicate balance for the benefit of all. Brentwood Smog Express specializes in smog repairs and performs regular smog and STAR Certified inspections. They can also assist with DMV registration services, registration renewal, licensing, vehicle title transfers and more. Contact them to learn more about state regulations and the bevy of services they offer. Keeping your vehicle running clean extends the life of your car’s engine and protects your investment. Moreover, you can safeguard both your auto and our precious environment by visiting Brentwood Smog Express for regular emissions testing and inspection services. Appointments are available and walk-ins are always welcome.
