WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?
Life-Long Smiles For 2018 Here it is two weeks into January and the entire East County farmland is covered in fog. You can’t hear the sound of tractors or irrigation pumps, but you know the planting of our famous Brentwood Sweet Corn is right around the corner. Like many, I made my New Year’s resolutions and have already checked a few off my list. What a great time to look in on a local business that can get you started on yours. The really great part about this journey is OrthoWorks is not only located in Antioch, they have a total of twelve offices in the San Francisco Bay Area. That being said, I was off to check out this local office and find out more about the world of braces. The office was easy to find and immaculate. I was greeted immediately and given the scoop on a multitude of services offered by the OrthoWorks team. Not only do they have several people working in the office and assisting patients, Dr. Lowe-Ching, Dr. Shen, Dr. Yi Chin Liu
and Dr. Perera are just four of the over dozen doctors treating patients at this location. I was able to observe patients coming and going during my quick visit and realized two things. One, everyone was happy to be there and two, they were greeted with a warm hello and smile. And, the office staff was quick to reschedule appointments and handle business transactions professionally. OrthoWorks offers several treatments including Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Clear Braces, Adult Braces, and Orthodontic treatment for children and adults all with the latest technology. I got to peek in the treatment area and was really impressed by the cleanliness and high tech equipment. The team works so well together and the patients are treated like family. They also offer surgically assisted orthodontic procedures, surgery for cleft palate and lips and address TMJ and Sleep Apnea. The really cool part is, they can do a computerized digital mapping of the orthodontic procedures. I told you these guys had the latest technology. Probably everyone’s fear of orthodontics is the price. If you go to their website, you can fill out the Pre-treatment survey and take it with you for your visit to the office. There you will work with a patient advisor who will give you an office tour, clinical exam, take some X-rays & photos, give you an orthodontic diagnosis and talk to you
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY Unique, Fresh, Emotive & Different
about insurance, cost of the treatment and tell you about the many ways for payment, including On-Line Care Credit. So, you know how much and how long it will take before you get started. So I asked when should you begin thinking about orthodontics. They told me that you can be seen at age 7, however, even senior adults can consider procedures to give them the smile they have always wanted. No matter how young or how old, this team of professionals really care about making a difference in your life and giving you that lifelong smile. Well, OrthoWorks, this snoop gives you ten golden toothbrushes for taking care of 60,000+ patients with 100 years of combined knowledge and experience. It was a pleasure to meet your team and I proudly encourage our readers to consider OrthoWorks for their orthodontic care, I know I will. Who will be snooped next? It could be you!
OrthoWorks is located at 5117 Lone Tree Way in Antioch. They can be reached at 925-777-9922 or visit www.orthoworks. com.

HOME & LIFESTYLE
5 Ways To Declutter Your Home Amidst the end of the holiday season and the New Year, your home can become rather messy. Whether its drawers becoming cluttered, the kitchen, or just the entire house, there are simple ways to easily declutter your home. Even for the busiest of house-holds. The first place to start, would be the kitchen. The kitchen can be the busiest zone in the house, and like many can become unorganized rather quickly. 1. Start off getting rid of all the food, whether refrigerated or in the pantry, that has been sitting around for some time. The second thing to do in regards to the pantry would be to label everything. Baskets can be placed on pantry shelves and filled with your favorite snacks and treats. As an example, labeling a basket, “Chips” or “Bread” can make it that much easier when looking for specific items. 2. Make a rule for the entire household. If
an item has not been used for at least six months, then either throw it out or donate the item. If this idea does not work, or you are still too attached to certain items, you can get a box and label it with the items and date, if within that year you have not used what is inside of the box, it is time to donate. 3. The closet. The dreaded closet. This space can become a mountain of clothes, all in the time it takes to get ready. A lot of us tend to keep unwanted clothes, maybe because we say to ourselves “I’ll definitely still wear that”. There is always a time and a place for certain items, and sometimes someone else can use them more than you would. Since the weather is cold this time of year, start with your winter wear. Keep the new or recently purchased items, then start going through what you have not worn in a while. Create a pile of wanted and unwanted clothing. Do this for every season. Such as spring, winter, summer and fall. The items in your closet, include shoes as well. It can be hard to depart from shoes, but try to determine if you will wear them again. Once you go through your whole closet, take the pile of unwanted clothes and to your local Goodwill store to be donated.

HOUSE CLEANING
5. The last step is to go through the entire household and get rid of any loose items you can find and toss them or recycle them. Such as unneeded receipts and school papers. A simple fix as tossing tiny items such as paper, can have huge results. Not only on the household but on the eyes, as well. Now that huge stack of papers in your office is no longer an eye sore.
4. The bathroom. Though small, the

bathroom can easily become cluttered simply from daily use. Although since the bathroom is a small space, it can easily be organized. Simple fixes as storing cotton balls and Q-tips into containers such as mason jars, or any decorative jar that fits your style. Command hooks can be attached to the inside of your cabinets for you to hang such items as straighteners, curling irons and even jewelry. Folding towels is essential to your bathroom becoming organized.

LAW OFFICES OF MICHAEL PRIMUS
Debts Forgiven In Bankruptcy Are Not Taxable Income This time of year I routinely get inquiries about forgiven debts and the dreaded form 1099. As a general proposition, the tax laws create an obligation to pay tax whenever the taxpayer’s finances improve. For example, a paycheck improves my financial position and creates an obligation to pay tax on that income. With a paycheck the taxes are taken out directly and remitted by my employer. With that in mind, if I owed $30,000 but was able to resolve the debt by paying $5,000 I would have improved my financial position and might assume I would owe tax on the $25,000. Whether I owe the tax depends on my circumstances. Debts are commonly forgiven through settlements and bankruptcy. In a settlement the lender agrees to accept a sum of money to resolve a debt. Generally, the amount will be in the range of thirty to sixty cents on the dollar of the balance owed. That

means a $5,000 debt might be settled for $1,500 to $3,000. Upon payment the borrower will have no further obligation to the lender. Settlements are common when the original debt was for a credit card or personal loan. Bankruptcy can allow a person to pay little or nothing and have no further obligation to the lender. The bankruptcy system refers to forgiven debts as having been discharged. Regardless of the terminology, the point is the money is no longer owed. That may seem like the end of the story but later the borrower may get a 1099. Form 1099 reflects cancellation of debt by the lender, it does not create a taxable event. In fact, very few people should pay the tax. Unfortunately many people prepare their own tax returns and mistakenly pay the tax. The IRS cheerfully accepts the money! The rule making cancelled debt taxable has two major exclusions discussed below.
time the debt was forgiven. The IRS rarely challenges a claim of insolvency. Either of these exclusions will render the forgiven money non-taxable, you do not need both. All you need to do is attach IRS form 982 to your tax return to clarify why the income reflected in the 1099 is nontaxable. The exceptions are also discussed in IRS form 982 and IRS publication 4681 which can be found on the IRS website at www.irs.gov. At the Law Office of Michael Primus we have helped thousands of clients get out of debt and start fresh through bankruptcy. We have offices in Antioch, Walnut Creek and Hercules and can be contacted at 925-706-9200.
1. The debt was forgiven in bankruptcy. This requires filing bankruptcy and obtaining a discharge from the bankruptcy court. 2. You were insolvent when the debt was forgiven. This does not require a bankruptcy. It means your debts exceeded the value of your assets at the

AMY’S BRIGHT ADVICE
Stress And Its Result On Your Mindset For Success! The importance of reducing stress in order for you to fulfill your goals and dreams to be successful is not only needed but it is something that cannot be ignored. The over-activation of our stress hormones have been linked to high blood pressure, heart attacks, lower immunity, depression, anxiety, and more. With these things present in your body there is no possible way to react at your highest potential in your personal nor your career life. Many of us set 2018 goals at the beginning of the new year and luckily since it’s still January we haven’t got off track yet but I must remind each of you the importance of a healthy mind and body will decide if you will be able to keep those goals into February and the future! The Bible makes it clear that our thinking and our hearts are inseparably linked. What and how we think affects our heart. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” So, to
take responsibility for your thoughts, we must renew our minds and clean up our thinking. Our thoughts will have a huge effect on our ability to succeed or fail on our daily goals. Now that we know how important it is to have a healthy mind in order for us to succeed, what can we do on a daily basis to help insure that we reduce our stress and clean up our mind? The following tips are just some ways that you can help your mind and body be at its healthiest state to work at its fullest capacity:
to do it again tomorrow!)
• Eating whole, real foods restores balance and reduces the effects of stress on your body. Replacing harmful substances such as caffeine, alcohol, and refined sugars, with clean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats helps regulate your hormone levels, including stress hormones. Your stomach and your brain are constantly sending signals to each other, so by keeping your microbiota (the bacteria in your gut) healthy, your brain feels less stressed.
• We do it all day, every day, and yet we often forget the healing powers of deep breathing. By slowing down your heart rate and lowering blood pressure, breathing deeply relieves stress.
• The quickest way to relieve stress is to release endorphins through exercise. You don’t need to go to a gym if that isn’t what your comfort zone is, instead just take a fast paced walk or move (it’s not what you do, it’s that you do it – so get out and move and make it fun so you want
• Sleep habits are essential. Everybody, whether you believe so or not, should be having between 6-8 hours of sleep a night in order for your body to work at its best during the day. Some struggle with getting your body to relax enough to sleep but to relieve stress before bed you can always try some relaxation techniques and make sure that you disconnect from technology at least an hour before bedtime.
• Ultimately, your biggest solution to reducing stress is to change your mindset! And that mindset must begin with your thoughts: Philippians 4:8 says it best, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
