WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Haircuts for the Young Well, we are getting ready to spring forward our clocks to a beautiful day.

Off to the west is a clear picture of our famous Mt. Diablo nestled in the beautiful surrounding hills, which just may turn green yet, after the much needed recent rains. That being said, there is nothing better than a great haircut to help you spring into a new season.

On assignment, I am off to visit one of East County’s finest hair cut establishments for the younger generation. Remembering my youth, I always dreaded that day, because it seemed like they just chopped it off and it was always too short. Lollipop Haircut Shop is the greatest idea, well, since the lollipop itself. Located on Lone Tree Way a couple of doors down from the Goodwill Store, this wonderland for haircuts can be seen from the parking lot with its great Lollipop logo on the sign.

As I entered the front door, I felt like a kid again. The bright bold colors and reception area filled with fun stuff to do is a great way to welcome the youngest client for their first haircut. I was greeted by one of the stylists with a great big smile and cordial hello. I told her I was researching the place for a friend and was really impressed with the décor.

The place was full and every one of the kids was having a great time. I highly recommend that you visit in person or go to the website to check out these neat styling chairs that look like cars at www.lollipophaircutshop.com. I would have loved this place as a kid.

I think the best part of Lollipops is the cleanliness. Everything is bright and cheery and immaculate. The styling stations are so cute with four different car designs to choose from. The kids that were there getting haircuts ALL had smiles on their faces and were enjoying the experience. They have a Baby’s 1st Haircut Package where you receive a certificate, photo and lock of hair for memories that last forever and every customer gets a free lollipop.

BRILLIANT! They also have a variety of professional products and a line just for kids. How cool is that? You can either

walk in or make an appointment and they are open Monday through Saturday and three Sundays a month. They open at 10:00am weekdays and 9:00am on Saturday. They also do buzz cuts, bangs and hair wash. Imagine being able to watch television in a miniature racecar and get your haircut from a really nice lady. Then, get a lollipop too!

Although it appears to be just for kids, these gals also do adult haircuts. Now that is a great plus! You can bring your kids for an enjoyable experience and get your hair done at the same time. And if you’re good, you too can get a lollipop.

Snoring in Children The prevalence of snoring in children ranges from 10% to 21% from 6 to 81 months. Habitual snoring is documented in 17% of pediatric patients and this percentage increases in children with neurological problems or psychiatric problems. Snoring is an indication of obstructive sleep apnea.

In the general population, 2-3% of children have apnea. This proportion is growing more with the increase in childhood obesity. What is apnea?

Apnea in children is events lasting longer than two missed breaths and most commonly associated with some change in oxygen concentration. Snoring and mouth breathing in children were initially thought of as not harmful habits but, more recently, it has been associated with a higher risk of social problems, poor academic performance, decreased attention and anxiety and depression issues. Children who snore are not likely

to grow out of it and the neurocognitive and behavioral damage from snoring in children is related to the fact that their brains are still growing. Dentists have a unique role in early identification of the Sleep Disordered Breathing or SDB, especially in children, as these children have abnormal facial growth, resulting in orthodontic problems and sleep related teeth grinding, as well.

Sleep Disordered Breathing or SDB may create facial growth changes and these skeletal alterations can further worsen the Sleep Disordered Breathing. Head and facial maturity is about 60% complete in children by the time they are 4 years of age, but the tonsils and adenoids begin to grow more in size when children are two and half years old and increase greatest in size by 6 years, causing additional airway blockage. In our body, soft tissue and muscles that cover the bone influence the pattern of bone growth. Therefore, the facial muscles and the tongue tone create a framework for normal development of the nose and jaws. In children with SDB, these muscles are weak, causing narrow palate and small jaws and this amplifies the difficulty in breathing. Mouth breathers typically have a smaller upper airway size. Sometimes, when the tonsils

and adenoids get extremely bigger in size, it causes more airway blockage.

These children tend to have long and thin face, along with small jaws and an open bite. The dentist is in the best position to diagnose these conditions in children.

Identifying the facial growth changes early in development may help resolve the orthodontic issues by getting the proper treatment as soon as possible. Therefore, it is extremely important to get children to see the dentist early on as the impact of SDB in growing children can be serious and proper treatment can help prevent further complications.

Removing Wallpaper The real secret to successful wallpaper removal is something that happens long before it’s time to remove the paper; it’s done when the paper is being hung. It’s called proper wall preparation! Unfortunately, chances are that you may not have owned the home when the paper was originally installed and that’s exactly why you’re removing the paper. Sorry to break the bad news, but red velvet flocked paper is out! Even if the walls were not prepared to your ultimate satisfaction, you’ll still be able to remove the paper.

It just may mean a little more elbow grease and some additional repair work to the wall surface once the paper has been totally removed.

Begin by performing the second most important secret to successful wallpaper removal; scoring or breaking the surface of the paper to allow steam or a paste solvent to penetrate the face

Although this can be accomplished in several ways, two of the most popular are with a scoring device designed specifically for this task or by using a hand saw. The teeth of the saw are run across the face of the paper and result in what an angry cat might do to a predator.

The two most popular methods to remove wallpaper are using a steamer or with an enzyme based solution, which will neutralize the wallpaper paste. Either of these methods is acceptable and, under normal circumstances, will work quite well. A steamer, which can be rented from your local tool rental establishment or paint and wallpaper store, is inexpensive and easy to use. Steam is used to moisten the paste while not saturating the drywall or plaster below.

The wallpaper stripping solution can be purchased from your local hardware store, home center, or paint and wallpaper specialty store. It comes as concentrated formula that is to be mixed with water and sprayed on with a pump garden sprayer. Be cautious not to use too much or you could soak the

GET YOUR GARDEN GROWING DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere.

Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year.

Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects.

Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants.
