Here are some retail trends and other things to consider as you shop at your favorite small businesses. The Local Economy

Sonya North

Linda Damerel

Big box retailers may offer certain conveniences, but shopping at a small business near you can be more satisfying -- from the personal service received to the unique items you may find, not to mention that shopping on Main Street benefits the local economy.

New Android based point of sale terminals, such as the ergonomically designed V-R7000 and V-R7100 from Casio have widescreen LCD touch panels, and an intuitive, high-resolution interface for faster sales and fewer transactional snafus. For example, these terminals come equipped with a battery to protect memory data in the event of a power failure, and offer efficient store operations

3 Reasons to Shop at Small Businesses

A common stereotype of mom and pop stores are that they are antiquated and overpriced, but many small businesses are adopting new technologies to streamline their operations; which can be an important consideration for shoppers in a hurry or on a budget.

By supporting small businesses, you are supporting local job creation. In fact, small firms accounted for over three-fifths of the new jobs created between 1993 and mid-2013, according to government statistics. Spending your shopping budget locally strengthens Main Street and can help your community’s economy thrive.

by eliminating common hardware problems experienced with PC based hardware. These information terminals can transform retail management and offer small businesses a chance to compete against their big box counterparts. Exclusive Items From the gift shop with handmade crafts made by neighborhood artisans, to the bookshop selling the works of local authors, shopping at small businesses means encountering items on sale that you won’t find elsewhere. Whether you’re redecorating your home or revamping your wardrobe, going local can help you get inspired. The next time you’re on a shopping spree, consider making a point of supporting your small, local businesses.

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

like many of my friends, you procrastinate your smog check visit like you do with your teeth cleaning, but it is certainly made easy when you can count on a local business to get you in and out at a reasonable rate, AND make sure all your documents are ready to be sent to the DMV on time. The neat part is they can schedule an appointment for you or you can just walk in. This counts two extra points, since most of us appreciate last minute decisions, especially one that means you can sell your old car to go buy a new one.

Say No to Smog! Here it is the first of March. El Nino seems to have taken a short nap, but she is due to bring out the umbrellas once again in the next few days. The farmlands are beginning to show signs of life with new cherry orchards being planted every day. It is no wonder, with the 80,000 annual visitors coming for this area’s popular crop in June. You know, the time of year that the traffic on Vasco Road is a solid line of cars from Walnut to Livermore. It is not uncommon to see cars parked on the side of the road waiting for a tow during this time of the year. What a great time to look in on a business who can keep your transportation in good working order, no matter where you are headed.

Brentwood Smog Express is a STAR certified inspection station. I know this will mean a lot because some of smog inspection businesses are at the very least, a little unorganized. You know the one I am talking about with equipment that looks like it was purchased at a garage sale. The part I like best about doing business with Brentwood Smog Express is I know I can always count on them doing their best to make sure my car not only passes inspection, but will assist me with any smog repair to get it back up and running great. And, they even have a coupon in the Grapevine for $10 off an inspection, which is great for all of us.

Brentwood Smog Express is no stranger to our family as we have used their services for years. It is easy to find on Brentwood Blvd. and you always get treated with great service. Now, if you are

famous surviving sites from the ancient world. The stones, which are up to 6.7m (22ft) high, attract hundreds of visitors every day, who come to marvel at the ingenuity of those who engineered the construction of the site and the techniques used to move and position the stones. There are also many burial mounds nearby, as well as long barrows from the Neolithic Age, the most famous of which is West Kennet Long Barrow.

This month we feature some of the most popular spots and areas for you to consider. Burns Country Southwest Scotland was home to the nation’s bard, Robert Burns. Explore his birthplace cottage and adjacent state-ofthe-art museum in Alloway, Ayrshire. Also open to visitors are Ellisland Farm and the Robert Burns House, his former homes in Dumfries and Galloway. In Dumfries itself, you can sit in his old chair at The Globe Inn. Chepstow Castle Located in the Wye Valley, in picturesque South Wales, the construction of Chepstow Castle began in 1066 just after the Battle of Hastings for William the Conqueror, and was the first castle in Britain to be built entirely of stone. The castle opened its doors to tourists for the first time in 1953 and today welcomes guests with life-size models of its former

Ireland’s most famous World Heritage Site is a natural wonder, an otherworldly rock formation of some 40,000 basalt columns. Located on the Antrim coastline, the Giant’s Causeway (www. giantscausewayofficialguide.com) draws visitors in droves – try being here at sunset for fewer crowds and spectacular photo opportunities. There’s now a brand new visitor centre.

While this is only a sneak preview, why not consider a visit to the UK this year? You will not be disappointed! Air service from SFO is offered by a number of airlines, with most arriving early mornings so you can hit the ground running.

Malt Whisky Trail Sample Scotland’s favourite export, whisky. Between Inverness and Aberdeen you can follow the malt whisky trail (www. maltwhiskytrail.com) and visit working distilleries to learn about this national icon. You can also watch whisky barrels being crafted at the UK’s only working cooperage in Dufftown. You might need to draw straws to decide who’s driving.

FOR YOUR DENTAL HEALTH

dissolvable fine milled tobacco, combined with candy flavors that look like pellets. These are also held between the gum and lower lip, some of them are available as films and are placed on the tongue where they dissolve.

Smokeless Tobacco Use And Dental Health In the United States in the last decade the sale of smokeless tobacco has been increasing, unlike the declining market trends for cigarettes. As a reaction to smoking bans it has been found that smokeless tobacco is being marketed as a way to use tobacco in smoke-free environments like restaurants, airplanes and work places. Smokeless tobacco use is a risk factor for cancer of the oral tissues and pharynx, gum disease, gingivitis, cavities, bad breath, tooth loss, teeth stains and nicotine addiction. Smokeless tobacco has been associated with low birth weight infants and also pancreatic cancer. Smokeless tobacco comes in many forms like chewing tobacco, snus or as moist snuff, which is placed and held between the lower lip and gingiva and both these forms cause excess salivation which has to be spit out frequently. Other forms of smokeless tobacco consist of

Risk taking behaviors often are established early in life, particularly during adolescence. Adolescents have reported being curious about new smokeless tobacco products. A study of snus sales indicated that under aged buyers were successful in their purchase attempts more easily than that of successful purchase of cigarettes. Although advertisements for tobacco products are required by law to include warnings in boldfaced type stating that all forms of tobacco can cause oral cancer, the message is diluted by means of glamorous advertisements, price discounts, flavorings, convenient packaging and promotional allowances, have been effective in generating sales. The use of smokeless tobacco as harm reduction strategy or as an alternative to smoking is controversial because people may equate less harmful with safe. Smokeless tobacco use may lead to smoking and using other combustible tobacco products like electronic nicotine delivery systems, bidis or cigars. Tobacco companies invest millions of dollars to

promote the use of smokeless tobacco and have tried to make products appear popular, glamorous, and trendy. It is important to strengthen awareness for adolescent dental patients who are at risk of using smokeless tobacco and smoking. Getting educated about this habit and being knowledgeable about associated behavioral factors like riding in a vehicle with someone who is drunk, using marijuana, and smoking, can help them to make better choices and to stay away from these habits. Parents should be aware that dentists have the opportunity to educate, intervene and provide tobacco use cessation programs in the normal course of providing dental care. Who’s Who... in East County

A fresh coat of paint is the easiest way to transform the interior and exterior of your home and add value to your investment. Whether the goal is to revamp your current residence or sell, having your house painted by professionals adds indoor ambiance and greater curb appeal that undoubtedly attracts a wider range of potential buyers. Dollar for dollar, contracting with S. Page & Son Painting of Antioch is one of the simplest and least expensive ways to renovate and increase the worth of residential and commercial property. In addition to cosmetic enhancement, painting protects building materials and drastically reduces the risk of costly future repairs. Exterior painting provides a defensive shield, guarding against severe weather conditions that erode structural surfaces. Expert painters can also make recommendations to protect buildings from unwelcome and detrimental insect infestations. It’s no wonder that the owner of S. Page & Son, Jason, has a passion for painting, ceiling work, and drywall. His grandfather helped to paint the Golden Gate Bridge when it was built and his father began his own painting business in 1979. Inspired by these men, he followed in their footsteps and now has over 20 years of experience. Like his forefathers, he takes great pride in his work. A self-proclaimed “on-site boss,” he personally oversees each job to assure the work is done as agreed upon, resulting in a high level of customer satisfaction. S. Page & Son Painting offers competitive pricing combined with quality products and exceptional workmanship. Ask about their complete interior and exterior home discounts and the rate reduction for senior citizens. Take advantage of their years of experience by allowing skilled experts to get the job done right, on time, as promised.

A patio converts seamlessly into an enclosure with the push of a button. Air cooling systems are built into the framework, cooling the area beneath this cover, by as much as 40 degrees. Custom lighting packages, even projection television and surround sound systems.

Established by Steve Conway, Steve has built his business on integrity, craftsmanship and customer satisfaction, his Motto is “Where Integrity Meets the Customer.” SC Construction specializes in patio and lattice covers, and also installs sun and patio rooms, canvas retractable awnings and Equinox louvered covers. SC Construction put a cover over my patio and they did a wonderful job! The price was very reasonable, and the quality and workmanship that went in to it was worth every penny. Very professional and were great to work with. I would highly recommend them for your patio needs.

LifeRoom can transform any dull, ordinary backyard into amazing outdoor haven, that directly reflects on your personal style. Now ,your family and friends can look in awe, as you pick up LifeRoom’s remote control and raise or lower the fully automated screens to create the ultimate environment of entertaining, watching movies or just plain relaxing.

HOME

ON THE HOUSE

know that the net result is damage.

On Wood Water Damage

The amount of damage that is done determines the type of repair that will be needed. When structural members have been affected replacement is always suggested. On the other hand, replacement is not critical when nonstructural parts of your home have been damaged. Non-structural parts are those which don’t hold anything up. Doors, windows, their frames and trim and exterior siding and trim are just a few examples of things on the exterior of your home that are non-structural.

The biggest single drawback to wood is its’ susceptibility to damage by water. Believe it or not it is easier to build a termite-proof home than one that is water-proof. All wood contains some moisture. It absorbs it from the air. Under normal conditions, wood exposed to air will contain some water. Usually, seven- to fifteen-percent. However, when the moisture content rises to between twentyto thirty-percent (depends on which scientist you talk to) bad things start to happen. Fungi begin to grow. Fungus spores are inherent in the wood and can only multiply when fed enough water (twenty- to thirty-percent). Once growth begins the fungi destroy the wood’s fibers leaving pockets of softness. This is not a good thing to happen — often structural integrity is compromised. You can actually fall through a floor that has been damaged by fungus. So, even though water itself doesn’t really harm wood, we

Fungus damage can really ruin the appearance of a wood surface and yet not be damaging in any other way. This kind of problem can be reasonably simple to repair. However, a certain amount of patience is required. Patience, because this proper kind of repair takes time. A window frame that has peeling paint and cracks in it should be checked for fungus damage. The tool: a sharp pointed knife or an ice pick. Michael Douglas should love this one. Using the tool of your choice, take several pokes at the surface of the suspect material. When you come to a soft spot, you have found your fungus damage.

Finding the damage is half the battle. The rest is time consuming, but easy. First, you will need to mix phase one of a two-part epoxy, two-phase repair kit (each of the two phases — thin phase, thick phase — is in two parts). The first part to mix will be the thin, liquid material. The liquid will penetrate and seal the surface of the damaged pocket created when you excavated and removed the soft, damaged wood. It is important to let this phase cure (dry, set-up, etc.). Next, mix the two-part putty. This will be used to fill the void. What is really nice about all this is that — once dry — the putty can be sanded, planed and milled exactly as if it were wood. One of San Francisco’s most noted restoration and painting companies frequently uses the technique we recommend to bring that city’s most famous painted ladies back to life — and you can too.

LAW OFFICE OF JOAN GRIMES

Top 5 Estate Planning Mistakes People often ask me what the most common Estate Planning mistakes are. There are 5 mistakes that are recurring. No Estate Plan The most common mistake is no Estate Plan. No Will, no Trust, no provision for guardianship of minor children, no Healthcare Directive in the event of illness, no Power of Attorney which would allow for bills to be paid. It is so sad to see children coming into my office needing a conservatorship for a parent because there was no Trust providing for incapacity. The Estate Plan Is Not Current Most existing Estate Plans that I see are out of date and provide for AB/By-Pass Trust which is no longer necessary for 99% of the people. It is very important that you amend a Trust with AB/By-Pass

CHRIS J. HELD

Market Timing is a Losing Game Studies have shown that trying to time market entries and exits rarely pays off and may, in fact, lead to investment losses. Market timing seems so easy, in theory. Buy when prices are low and sell when they are at a high. Anyone who diligently follows the market and stays abreast of economic news can anticipate, and capitalize off these movements, right? Wrong, at least not over the long term. As history has shown repeatedly, market timing is a losing game. Volumes of research critical of the practice have been written, and some of the greatest investment minds – William Sharpe, a Nobel laureate, Benjamin Graham, considered the father of value investing and John Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group – have all counseled against it. Experts are right a fraction of the time Even so-called market timing experts

28

Trust provision prior to the incapacity of a spouse. If a spouse does not have capacity to amend the Trust, it is too late to remove AB/By-Pass trust provision. Also, make sure your Estate Plan still reflects your desires. Are their new grandchildren you wish to provide for, should there be a Special Needs Trust for any of your beneficiaries? No Government Benefit Planning Provisions Most existing Trusts that I see do not have any provision for Government Benefit provisions. If there is any possibility that you will need government assistance such as skilled nursing, your Trust should include the power for your Trustee to deal with governmental agencies and to apply for benefits such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other services. Failure To Put Assets Into Trust The failure to put assets into the Trust is the most common mistake for all Revocable Living Trusts. Real property must be put into the Trust through a Deed that is recorded with the county recorder. Bank accounts must be in the name of the Trust or they will be subject to Probate unless there is a beneficiary designation on the account.

can’t consistently predict when to move in and out of the market. A study by CXO Advisory Group tracked more than 4,500 forecasts by 28 self-described market timers, between 2000 and 2012. Only 10 were able to accurately forecast equity returns (as measured by the S&P 500®) over 50% of the time, and none were able to predict accurately enough to outperform the market. Certainly, some investors have made accurate market calls, and others have predicted a market bottom or top. But over the long run, the law of averages usually wins out, effectively rendering a market timing strategy a game of chance.

Failure To Have Beneficiary Designations On Assets To the extent that assets are not going into the trust, you need to make sure you have the correct beneficiary designations on your accounts. I recommend checking all of your accounts once a year. A common problem is that accounts get moved to new bank/brokerages and you have forgotten to do beneficiary designations on the new accounts. How to Budget for Your Future Travel Plans Your budget may not have allowed you to take the vacation you wanted in the past, but don’t let the same reason hinder your wanderlust indefinitely. A few changes to your routine can help you reach your vacation goal.

• Budget your time: Before making any travel plans, check your job’s vacation policy so you can budget your days off from work accordingly. If you don’t get paid time off from work, the pay cut is also an important item to consider in your financial budget.

Here are a few quick tips to consider:

• Temporarily skip extras: Which of your daily expenses are necessary and which are optional? Consider packing your lunch for a month or using the company coffeemaker instead of indulging in a daily latte at the café around the block. At the end of the month, calculate the savings and “pay yourself” by directing this money to your vacation fund.

• Contribute to a vacation savings account: Big travel purchases, like airfare and hotel accommodations, are hefty withdrawals if you don’t set aside money specifically for a vacation. Earmark a portion of each paycheck to send straight to a dedicated vacation savings account. Once it’s there, don’t touch it until it’s time to pay for your trip. • Create a budget: A budget is the only way to track your spending and ensure you have more coming in than going out. Make your budgeting as seamless as possible with Casio’s new CLASSWIZ fx-991EX scientific calculator. Typically a

• Consider coupons: Vacation packages found on daily deal sites can be just the ticket you need to get the vacation you want for less. Other travel sites often offer special rates if you bundle purchases. Investigate these options before resigning yourself to an expensive a la carte plan.

• Be on time: A missed flight or train could cost you a pretty penny you did not account for when drawing up your vacation budget. Invest in a watch that will help you stay true to your itinerary, such as Casio’s line of EDIFICE timepieces. These watches automatically adjust to the time zone and come with daily alarm settings and countdown timer settings. You don’t need to defer your vacation again this year. A few tips can keep you on track for a memorable vacation.
