WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

My New Favorite Skin Doctor Here it is the end of February. It is so cold outside you can see those green freeze free covers placed on all the tropical plants in the front yards. The farmlands are more than ready to receive their first crop of corn. What a great time to look in on a local business, who can get you ready for spring to be sprung. I was so fortunate to make a personal visit to Golden State Dermatology for an on-site interview with one of their doctors. Still under cover, they had no idea I was the snoop. The cool part was when I walked into the reception area for my consultation I met an old time friend who was a regular patient. She posted about her doctor who happened to be doctored JR Zimmerman who I had my consultation with. She told me she loved her doctor, the entire staff, and the results she has had from their services. Big 10 points! Wendy the super friendly receptionist greeted me with a wonderful “hello and

welcome to Golden State Dermatology,” another 10 points. Dr. Zimmerman greeted me at the front desk and we went off to his office. I was so comfortable with him it was really easy to begin my pretend interview. I first talked about my skin and possible treatment for a few spots on my face. I learned about the many options and treatments they offered and couldn’t wait to book an appointment for the simple procedure. I asked Dr. “Z” why they came to Brentwood. He told me that they felt there was a need for additional medical and cosmetic dermatology services and because they were new to the area it would be quite easy to get an appointment and receive all the benefits they offered. Dental Health and Osteoporosis Osteoporosis or porous bone is a disease that weakens bones especially the hip, spine and the wrist and makes them more likely to break. As we grow older, our bones begin to lose their density and strength, especially after we reach fifty years old. Many factors affect bone density, including diet, physical activity, hormones, lifestyle, family history and medications. Osteoporosis affects about 10 million Americans out of which 8 million of whom are women. The disease affects more woman than cancer, heart disease, and stroke combined. About thirty four million Americans have osteopenia or low bone density and are at risk of developing osteoporosis. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation about one in two women and up to one in four men older than 50 years will break a bone as a result of osteoporosis. Broken bones of the

spine and hip are linked to an increased risk of death. This disease causes more than 2 million fractures each year and can affect the person’s quality of life. Some people never fully recover. Many people with low bone density or osteoporosis prevent broken bones by taking one of the drugs from a group of bisphosphonates or denosumab. Studies have shown that in many people osteoporosis medications help reduce the chance of breaking bones by reducing bone loss and increasing bone density. Some reports estimate that taking osteoporosis medications reduce the chance of breaking a hip by as much as 40 to 50 percent.

keep a very good oral hygiene regime and please let the dentist know if you have been or are currently taking these medications. It is recommended to monitor your oral health regularly by the dentist to prevent any extractions or surgical procedures in the jaw to reduce the occurrence of necrosis of the jaw bone due to these medications. Do not stop taking these medications without speaking to your physician because they will be the best source of information regarding your need to for osteoporosis medications. There is no known prevention for osteonecrosis of the jaw but you can reduce the risk by regular dental visits and excellent oral hygiene.

In some patients who have been taking osteoporosis medications a condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported. This is a rare condition but it is serious and can cause severe damage to the jaw bone. Most patients diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with these medications are patients with cancer who have received or are receiving repeated high doses through intravenous infusion. There is a risk of developing osteonecrosis if you are taking bisphosphonates or denosumab for osteoporosis and researchers agree that the chances are small. Therefore it is very important to

5 Indoor Air Quality Tips for the Upcoming Spring Season

• Use allergen-rated filters – Besides making sure that your air filters are changed on an appropriate schedule, using a high-quality filter rated for allergen filtration will help clean the air as it cycles. Regular filters are designed to protect the heating and cooling system by trapping larger particles such as dust before they reach the unit. High-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, filters will trap much smaller particles and keep offending allergens from simply recirculating back into the living space.

As winter gives way to spring, the combination of warmer temperatures and increase of rain showers can often lead to heightened levels of humidity. Many plants and trees will also begin to bloom, and the pollen levels can create invasive allergens for unprepared homeowners.

• Consider an air cleaner – If those living in the home are experiencing severe negative health effects from invasive allergens, using an air cleaner in conjunction with HEPA air filters for the HVAC unit will dramatically increase the effectiveness of overall indoor air filtration. Air cleaners are designed specifically to remove mold, mildew, dust, pollen and pet dander from the air inside the home.

“Although we’re quickly moving past the freezing, dry air of winter, it is important to acknowledge as we begin to change seasons that spring can also wreak havoc on the air quality inside a home,” said Tommy Webber, owner of T. Webber Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. “Excessive humidity can lead to mildew, mold, peeling wallpaper and rot in wooden window frames from running condensation. Allergens bloom and worsen in humid environments as well, so it’s important to keep pollen and other similar airborne threats from entering the home.”

• Install ultraviolet lamps – Ultraviolet lamps can be installed inside the heating and cooling unit to kill mold and bacteria that may develop on and around the coil due to moisture, and there are also lamps available that can sterilize the moving air. These lamps are effective at killing germs that may otherwise recirculate through the

How to Hold Title to Your Property Do you know how you hold title to your property? There are many different ways to hold title and most people don’t spend much time thinking about it. It is important to know how you hold title to your property because it can have huge consequences. Holding Property If You Are Married, But Don’t Have A Trust If you are married and don’t have a Trust, many people assume that the best way to hold title is as joint tenants. Prior to 2001, this was correct because joint tenancy allowed property to pass automatically without a probate. However, holding title as joint tenants can have negative tax consequences. Under Joint Tenancy, when the first spouse dies, the property will be transferred to the survivor, but the survivor may only take a ½ step up in basis. For example, let’s say the property was purchased for $100,000 and is held by the owners as joint tenants. When the

In 2001, the California legislature added a new way for couples to hold title which is “community property with the right of survivorship.” Similar to joint tenancy, holding title as community property with the right of survivorship allows the survivor to automatically receives the decedent’s interest in the property without a will or probate. But, unlike with joint tenancy with right of survivorship, this form allows the survivor to take a full step-up in basis rather than only half at the death of the first spouse. Holding Property If You Have A Revocable Living Trust (“Trust”) If you have a Trust, check to make sure your property is in your Trust. Many people come to our office with all their Trust documents, but after doing a title search, we discover that none of their property has been transferred into the Trust. To make sure your property is in the Trust, check your Grant Deed to ensure the name of your Trust is on the Deed. There are several key benefits to holding your property in a Trust. First, upon the passing of the first person, the survivor

will automatically receive the decedent’s interest in the property while also bypassing the probate process. Third, if both Trustees are still living and one person becomes incapacitated, the other Trustee is able to manage or even sell the property without the need of a conservatorship or using a power of attorney. How Do You Define Success?

Success is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame. But, thank goodness, today that definition has transitioned within our society into more than just the state of our bank accounts and/or how others perceive us. Our society has made many unfortunate changes throughout the years but I truly believe that this is something that we as Americans can be proud of. I believe success is defined by who you are when no one is looking; one who has a superior work ethic, a strong faith and a great desire to serve and lead others down the same path. We need to ask ourselves questions in order to evaluate whether we have reached a stature of successfulness, but also realize that there is no limit to the range in which that can truly be measured. Do you see success as how others perceive you or is it more of a personal view of yourself? Is success really attainable or is it something that one will continuously spend their lives trying to achieve, and is that striving what makes you more successful than

others? All these questions will help you formulate how you see success for yourself and if you are on the correct path to achieving that state. The other thing we must remember is that what we believe success looks like might actually be smoke and mirrors. Think of all the famous and wealthy people that on the outside look like they have it all together but then we find out that they are completely broken and miserable on the inside, would you still look at them as a definition of someone successful or not? Wouldn’t you rather be completely without financial means but live in a state of complete joy and feel spiritually complete and whole? Jesus defined success as one who puts others and God above himself with no desire to have personal recognition and reward for serving with great love. Why is it that when we help others or are able to give to others we feel blessed? Maybe success is knowing that you have made a difference and maybe even leaving behind a legacy that others can follow. New Ways to Measure Success. • Character in solitude. Those who display character in the dark will always reflect it in the light. • Contentment in circumstance. Rich is the man or woman who can find contentment in any circumstance. • Courage during adversity. Courage can only be revealed when it is required. • Faithfulness in commitment. Those whose words are true.
