The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo An annual event in Edinburgh draws thousands each year and we are only too happy to tell you about it.

The world famous Tattoo is an annual global gathering showcasing the talents of musicians and performers from around the world. The event takes place annually throughout August, as part of the wider Edinburgh Festival (a collective name for many independent festivals and events held in Edinburgh during August). It is held high above the skyline of Scotland’s capital, on Edinburgh Castle’s esplanade.

For three weeks every August, Edinburgh Castle becomes an arena for military bagpipe bands and performers from around the world. With color and music and a light show on the ancient castle walls, this is the single most iconic event in Scotland (and a “must” see event if you plan to visit Scotland during August).

Every performance finishes with the lone bagpiper playing from the castle ramparts. There is also a gigantic street festival happening at the same time, called the “Fringe Festival.” This brings hundreds of street performers, plays & shows to town. It’s great fun, but together these performances draw hundreds of thousands of guests every August, so here’s some tips for seeing the Tattoo: 1. Purchase your tickets well in advance (with tour package or separately).

Sales start around Christmas for the following year. Every performance will be sold out several months in advance.

After that, your only chance is getting returns. Returns might be available that day if it rains.

2. Book your accommodation (or vacation package) as soon as you get your tickets (unless it’s included in the vacation package). Everything in the city books up during August. Yes, hotel prices go up during this time, but it’s worth it to go when everything is happening.

3. On performance night, take a taxi, bus or rickshaw to get close to the

castle. They know the roads that will be open. You have no chance of driving that night!

4. Be prepared; it usually rains (or can be cold), you have to queue for a long time (up to 1 hour) to get in, and if you are travelling by train and it runs late, you have to leave early and miss the best bit at the end.

If you have the heart of a Scotsman, the Tattoo will become part of your soul! It is best to obtain an escorted tour price for this event so you are guaranteed to get tickets. They are in high demand each and every year, as are the hotels, so let Fred do the work. He’ll be glad to help you so you can Getaway From Your Everyday.

Who’s Who... in East County

About a year ago, Laura Rodriguez decided to give up her career in corporate America for a healthier and happier life. Laura holds an MBA from Cornell University, and has lived in Buenos Aires, Paris, Miami, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay area. Having passed the big 4-0, she decided that life was too precious to be traveling constantly, working endless hours, and stressing so much. It is inspiring that she is opening her own childcare business and completely and courageously changing her life.

Laura began by thoroughly researching the industry, visiting kindergartens, family childcare homes and centers, and consulting with various local childcare organizations. She also talked to all her friends with children, from different cultural backgrounds, to discuss what they felt was most needed in childcare. Laura found out that the area needed childcare for overnights, parent trips, weekends, and unexpected situations. Water Flosser Traditionally, personal oral hygiene starts with brushing and flossing. Interdental cleaning is a key step in a personal oral care regimen. Flossing is considered the gold standard of interdental care. A great benefit of flossing is that it reduces interproximal caries (cavities which start in between the teeth). Sometimes, due to arthritis or other health problems, flossing can be difficult to do. When given a choice, patients readily choose other interdental devices, such as, brushes and floss holders over floss. Studies have shown that if the product is cumbersome or difficult to do, it is not used as often it should be or not used at all. This holds true even in a life or death situation. For example, one out of eight people who have had a heart attack stopped taking all the medications within one month of the hospital discharge.

Compliance with oral hygiene is no different. Data shows that only 2% to 10% of the population floss regularly and effectively. Brushing alone cannot remove all the plaque from the tooth surface even

when done correctly and thoroughly. It is recommended to brush the teeth at least for 2 minutes. However the average brushing time is only 37 seconds according to American Dental Association survey.

Combination of brushing and flossing has shown clinically improving the health of the gums and the teeth.

There is a water flosser, also known as a dental water jet, that has been in use for more than forty years as a personal oral care regimen, in addition to brushing. The water flosser helps in reducing gingivitis and gingival bleeding. The water flosser uses a combination of pulsation and pressure elements. The combination of pulsation and pressure expels debris and bacteria from in between the teeth and under the gums. Not all water flossers or dental water jets are the same; some have differences in the pressure and the pulsation specifications. The pulsating water can access areas that may not be accessible to a tooth brush. Cleaning around the crowns and bridges can be tedious and difficult. A water flosser can help to clean in between teeth and the gums. The water flosser is a good alternative to flossing when patients are having orthodontic treatment where it is difficult to clean around the braces and wires with regular brushing. Research

has shown that patients with gingivitis, periodontitis and diabetes can also benefit from using the water flosser.

There are different designs of water flossers available and water is usually cost effective, but some of them accept mouthwashes, as well.

Regular and effective self-care is important to the long term health of the teeth and gums. In addition to keeping up with the regular checkup and cleaning protocol at the dentists; brushing, flossing and using a water flosser has been shown to reduce gingivitis, bleeding, and reducing inflammation in the gums and periodontal tissues. This is especially true for those who are at increased risk for periodontal disease and in kids with special needs and having braces.

Don’t Throw Away Ashes If you burn wood, for warmth, cooking or whatever, the ashes that result can be unbelievably useful.

And that’s a good thing, because a cord of firewood will leave behind approximately 20 pounds of ash.

By the way, the use of wood ashs is not a new science. Over 5000 years ago, folks made lye by running water through ashes.

Lye was combined with animal fat to make soap. It worked pretty well too. So well, that lye water was also used for scrubbing wood floors and laundering clothing.

Nearly 50 centuries later, we grew up using homemade lye soap that our Great Grandfather sold in his grocery store.

Believe it or not, there are tons of other uses for wood ashes in and around your home. Here are a few: Ashes contain calcium, potassium, and a variety of trace minerals important for plant health. They also work well as a lime substitute to raise the pH of acidic soils. However, unlike limestone, which can take six months or more to change

soil pH, wood ash is water-soluble and changes the soil pH rapidly. Apply roughly twice as much ash by weight as the recommendation for limestone.

Oh, and don’t apply ashes around acid-loving plants such as blueberries, rhododendrons, azaleas or hollies – they love the acid soil they live in. Wear eye protection, gloves, and a dust mask, and spread the ashes evenly on a dry, windless day. Mix them into the soil thoroughly.

Hose off any ashes that settle on actively growing plants to prevent burning the foliage. Caution: Don’t apply wood ashes to your garden, lawn, or ornamental plantings without first having a soil test You can get traction on icy walks and driveways with a sprinkle of wood ash.

Wood ash will melt ice and provide a safer walking surface. Ash doesn’t work quite as well as salt, and ashes tracked into the house can make a mess. So, it’s important to take steps to prevent the ashes from being tracked into the house. But ashes are free, and they won’t damage plants, animal paws, or paved surfaces, or cause rust.

If you have a fireplace, you may already know that hardwood ash works great for cleaning glass fireplace doors. Hardwood ashes make fast work of grease, grime and tarnish on glass, silverware, ovenware,

grills, and glass stovetops. Ash will also clean gummy residues left by stickers and labels. WD40, eat your heart out.

Here’s how to do it. Dampen a soft cloth and dip it in the ashes (or you can make a thick paste with ashes and a few drops of water) scrub lightly and rinse with plain water and dry – again with a soft cloth.

Wear gloves for these scrubbing tasks to avoid caustic burns. Remember, you are basically using a homemade lye cleaner.

Does your driveway look like an Indy 500 pit stop? You can reduce or remove oil stains on asphalt, stone, and cement by sprinkling ashes on oil or grease spills.

Simply cover the area with ashes and then rub them into the affected area with a soft bristle brush and sweep up. Repeat if necessary. Caution: Even though the ashes may appear cold, buried embers may remain live for days or even weeks.

So, be very careful when collecting ashes.

Be absolutely sure no embers remain.

Filter the ashes through a fine grate and store them in a metal container. When using ashes, treat them as you would any other caustic cleaner; safety glasses, gloves and a breathing mask.

Harvest Time HARVEST TIME in Brentwood recently met for a photo shoot with Sam Young Photography to help launch the 2014 Membership Drive and their inaugural 2014 Brentwood Harvest Time Festival.

The Festival will be held in Historic Downtown City Park and Civic Center on Saturday, July 12 & Sunday, July 13, celebrating the farmlands harvest.

Harvest Time in Brentwood is a 501c6 non-profit organization whose mission is promote the U-pick farms, roadside stands and agricultural retail marketing outlets in East Contra Costa County.

Harvest Time and its members offer unique and rewarding ag-tourism opportunities to visitors to enjoy farm fresh, delicious products, learn about farming, it’s history, and appreciate the nutritious and economical value of local grown products.

This year, the annual trail map will present over 50 farm stand locations.

The printed map is available at all Harvest Time stands, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and various other locations throughout the area. It can be downloaded from the Harvest Time website at harvest4you.com and is available on the FREE Harvest Time App on iphone & android versions.

Businesses can get a listing on the APP to direct the 180,000 farm stand visitors to their business for an annual fee of $220. Call the Grapevine for more information.

The festival will be two days celebrating yesterday, today and tomorrow of Harvest Time in Brentwood. Families are encouraged to spent the day enjoying fine wine, ice cold beer, great food, fresh produce and local entertainment while learning about farming and it’s products.
