Weight Loss Medications And Dental Considerations Diet and lifestyle interventions are usually the first line of therapy for prevention and treatment of obesity. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization seventeen per cent of children and more than one third of adults in the United States are obese. Patients sometimes are not successful in achieving their goals by using lifestyle modifications alone turn to dietary supplement and weight loss medications. This causes drug interactions especially as Americans live longer have other chronic conditions for which they take medications including the drugs for obesity. It is extremely important to let the dentist know all the medications the patient is taking and also the drugs for weight loss.

Tips for Painting Your Deck

Don’t paint unless you can cover all six sides of every piece of wood. In situations where pieces of wood are sandwiched together, and the joined surfaces can’t be painted, then the pieces should be joined as one by thoroughly caulking all connecting joints. If all sides can’t be reached, you’ll get the best protection with an oil or oil-stain finish — not with paint.

A painted deck or fence can be beautiful, but painting can also be a real problem. Unlike wood siding, wood in decks, handrails, fences, retaining walls, and other complex structures expose several surfaces of each piece of wood to the weather. Some of the surfaces (such as the area between a fence rail and a fence board) are inaccessible and can’t be protected, which makes it difficult to achieve a complete waterproof membrane, even if you caulk. Partially painted pieces of wood create a real problem. Even if the unpainted side doesn’t get wet directly, exposed wood can absorb moisture from vapors rising from beneath. After the exposed wood absorbs moisture, the painted surface on that same piece of wood can become riddled with bubbles, splits, chips, and peeling paint. And when the painted surface has been compromised, it can no longer fully protect the wood — in fact, the damaged surface becomes a

Because of the chipping, bubbling, and splitting normally associated with painted decks and handrails, we’re reluctant to suggest painting. However, if you do decide to paint, do the following: Make sure that the surface is thoroughly clean and that the wood is dry. Go to extremes to get the wood clean: pressure-washing, sanding, and detergent scrubbing. Remove all loose nails and replace them with the next larger size. The larger nail will provide a like-new grip, holding loosened wood firmly in place. Use a hammer and nail punch to countersink all nails. Fill the resultant nail hole with a high-quality, exterior-grade putty. Use a hinge pin (removed from a door

hinge) as an oversized nail set — it’s much easier for a novice to use than a common skinny tipped nail punch. Fill all other holes with a high-quality, exterior-grade putty. While you’re applying the putty, be sure to remove all excess putty to keep sanding to a minimum. Apply a high-quality polyurethane caulk at all joints. Prime all bare areas and puttied spots with a high-quality, oil-based primer. Finish decks with a high-grade, oil-based finish. Handrails can be finished with a good-quality acrylic paint. Never paint a wood surface that has previously been oiled. The paint won’t stick, and you’ll have a mess on your hands forever. After wood is oiled or oil stained, even the most minute spots of leftover paint show up like a headlight on Lover’s Lane. If you insist on painting an oiled surface (or on oiling a painted surface), you must first take the time to use a paint remover followed by thoroughly sanding the wood.

Do You Need a Trust Check-up? People often ask me if and when they should have their Trusts check-up. Below is a good checklist for determining whether you need a check-up. 1. The Estate Plan is not Current. If your Estate Plan was prepared prior to 2012, chances are good that it does not take into account the current tax laws. Most existing Trusts that I see provide for AB/ By-Pass Trust which is no longer necessary for 99% of the people. It is very important that you amend a Trust with AB/By-Pass Trust provision prior to the incapacity of a spouse. If a spouse does not have capacity to amend the Trust, it is too late to remove AB/By-Pass trust provision. 2. Need to Change Trustees or Allocations to Beneficiaries. If a designated Trustee has died or is no longer available to be your Trustee, you should consider amending the Trust to provide for a new Trustee. Also, you should review whether

your current payouts to beneficiaries are still appropriate. Are their new grandchildren you wish to provide for in the trust? Is a current beneficiaries having emotional or drug problems which might make a supplemental or special needs trust more appropriate for their distribution? 3. No Government Benefit Planning provisions. Most pre 2012 Trusts do not have any provision for Government Benefit planning. If there is any possibility that you or your spouse will need government assistance such as skilled nursing, your Trust should include the power for your Trustee to deal with governmental agencies apply for benefits such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and do Medi-Cal planning. 4. Failure to Fund Trust. The failure to put assets into the Trust is a common mistake. Real property must be put into the Trust through a Deed that is recorded with the county recorder. Bank accounts must be in the name of the Trust or have a beneficiary designation on the account. 5. No Incapacity Planning. Most older Trusts fail to have any Incapacity Planning provision. Specifically, your trust should

have provisions on how incapacity will be determined, how assets will be used during any period of incapacity and specific instructions on care. Do you want to stay at home as long as possible with in home care? Do you want to be near any specific child or relative? If you don’t state your wishes, it will be left up to the judgment of the Trustee or the court. If you have a Trust and you need a Trust check-up, I will be happy to meet with you and review your current Trust at no charge. Putting Financial News, Good or Bad, In Context Investors’ reaction to economic news can be baffling. For example, positive economic announcements, such as an uptick in gross domestic product (GDP), strongerthan-expected earnings by bellwether companies or a drop in unemployment are sometimes followed by a market sell-off. If the market’s negative response to seemingly good news has left you wondering if you are missing something, you are not alone. Are Markets Rational? The evolving field of behavioral finance may provide some explanation for seemingly irrational investor responses to good or bad economic news. The discipline seeks to combine behavioral and cognitive psychological theory with conventional economics and finance to understand why people make irrational financial decisions.

Practitioners have identified a set of behavioral biases that may explain apparently unreasonable market movements. These include, but are not limited to: Fear of Regret and Loss Aversion – The threat of potential disappointment or short-term loss are powerful forces that often inspire second-guessing of portfolio strategies, frequently causing investors to sell winning positions too soon or to hold losing positions too long. Overconfidence – Self-confidence might make people happier, but it doesn’t make them better investors. Overconfident investors tend to overestimate their knowledge, underestimate risks, and exaggerate their ability to control events.
