Stack’s Classic Awning Ed Stack started his business career as an auto dealer and operated an automotive specialty parts business.

That led to auto upholstery and convertible top work. In 1992, Ed and his wife, Lynette moved into the awning and canvas fabrication business, viewing it as a “great retirement business.” When their friends and business associates learned of their new business, they had more work than they could handle. So much for retirement!

They are now an international awardwinning company, providing customized shade for residential and commercial projects. Their work in Brentwood includes residential and commercial awnings, retractable systems, dropscreens and custom shade projects.

Using the latest technology, they offer computerized and remote-controlled shade solutions. According to Ed, “The best way to insure your room is cool is to keep your window area cool. A shaded window may make a 15-20% difference in room temperature.” Ed can evaluate a heat or sun problem and recommend shade options.

Classic Awning has a very proactive approach to customer service. This begins with a friendly showroom with sample awnings, fabrics and job photos.

Ed may also proudly give a tour of his 3,000 sq.ft. sewing and fabrication shop. Once an educated and confident customer places an order, Lynette keeps them apprised of the status of their job throughout the manufacturing process. Then Ed’s expert crew takes over and installs with on-time service, attention to detail and respect for the customer’s property. When the project is complete, Lynette sends a thank you letter with fabric care instructions and warranty. This treatment of customers is the foundation of their exceptional referral business.

When the Stacks moved to Brentwood in 1975 (population 2,000 or so), they loved the small town environment and became involved in the business community right away. As East County has grown, they continue to support many charitable events and service organizations. Lynette is a past President of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce. Ed is a past president of the Brentwood Rotary Club, American Legion #202 (past Commander), Masonic Lodge #175, and Contra Costa Sheriff’s. They give back to their community with donations to Summerset charities, Relay for Life, school events and are also changing lives by providing hope and mobility through the Wheelchair Foundation.

Bad Habits in Children Causing Orthodontic Problems Bad habits can be responsible for a number of orthodontic and orthopedic problems and should be addressed as soon as possible.

When treated immediately, most of the problems caused by bad habits can be reversed. However, when no intervention occurs, a serious malocclusion is inevitable.

A thumb or finger sucking habit can initially cause the upper front teeth to move forward and the lower front teeth to move back. Sometimes, it can prevent the front teeth from erupting normally. If this is not treated as soon as possible, it can lead to the narrowing of the upper

jaw causing a anterior open bite and a smaller lower jaw.

Lip biting and lip sucking of the lower lip can cause the upper teeth to tip forward and the lower teeth to tip back. Over time, this causes an increase in the amount of over jet. Biting or sucking the upper lip can actually inhibit the normal development of the upper jaw.

Early diagnosis and treatment of these habits can prevent major dental and jaw problems in children and also help protect the self esteem in children due to speech problems.

Therefore, regular check ups with the dentist are highly recommended to monitor and recognize impediments to normal facial growth and correct these problems early on. If need be, the dentist will work with the pediatrician and ENT specialist for the best welfare of the child.

Tongue thrusting is another habit which can cause a lot of damage in jaw development and teeth growth and position. If this habit persists after the age of 4 to 5 years, there is an increased likelihood that this pattern will remain. Even the child’s speech patterns can be negatively affected.

Nocturnal grinding or bruxism can occur in children. This is usually a sign of an existing malocclusion. It could also be an indicator that the child is suffering from an airway problem.

How to Patch Holes in Wallboard A do-it-yourselfer can find it necessary to cut a hole in wallboard to facilitate the installation home improvement. Obviously, such holes are necessary to the task and voluntarily created. On the other hand, a frustrated adult or an overzealous youngster – swinging a door open a bit too hard – may create unwanted and unplanned holes. These holes can’t be easily hidden by installing a mere toilet paper holder.

Anyway, who wants a toilet paper holder mounted in their dining room entry?

To hide an unwanted hole, folks often resort to strategic placement of paintings, wall hangings or furniture. If that does the trick then more power to you. However, if your attempt to cover the damage with furnishings proves unsuccessful you may want to read on for an easy solution. An old time drywall contractor who works for our remodeling company taught us a very simple method of making a wallboard patch:

1. First, you’ll need to create a patch from a piece of wallboard. The patch material will have to be slightly larger than the hole to be repaired. Many hardware stores or home improvement centers will sell partial sheets of 1/2” wallboard, which is ideal.

2. Start by cutting a patch (any shape), which is slightly larger than the area to be repaired. The patch does not need to be neatly cut – any shape will do. Place the patch-size piece of sheetrock centered directly over the hole, and using the patch as a stencil, draw a pencil line on the wall around the entire perimeter of the patch.

3. Next, using a wallboard saw, cut along the line on the wall and remove the damaged wallboard surrounding the hole. Note that the hole in the wall now exactly matches the patch that you made in step two.

4. Then, cut two pieces of wallboard joint tape each approximately seven or eight inches longer than the length of the patch. Apply a thin layer of joint compound to both sides of both pieces of joint tape.

5. Place the joint tape in a criss-cross fashion centered on the back of the patch.

7. Trowel the joint tape to smooth it and then wait for it to dry. This completes step one.

8. Step two, three and four are to apply additional coats of joint compound over the patched area. An additional two inches of area should be covered with each coat of joint compound to ensure a smooth transition between the existing wall and the patched area.

If the wall has a textured finish, yet another step will be required. We have found that the simplest way to match most modern wall textures is with a disposable touch-up gun or with texture in a can. Both devices come with an adjustable nozzle allowing you to match several different finish textures. In order to achieve the desired finish, we suggest that you practice applying texture to a scrap piece of drywall before making the actual application.
