Water sports and fireworks are two of the biggest pastimes for summertime, and these are both linked to numerous deaths and injuries each year.

Be a safe swimmer by never swimming alone and make sure that the kids’ water play is adequately supervised at all times.

Use alcohol responsibly and arrange a designated driver. Remember also that alcohol and swimming can be as dangerous as drinking and driving.

Be sure to have an adequate number of life preservers on hand for extra guests.

Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher both before and during any outdoor activity. And reapply especially after being in the water. Even for those with darker skin, Ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause both premature aging and skin cancer.

Don’t leave food out for more than one hour if the temperature is above 90 degrees and not more than two hours at other times. Mayonnaise and egg dishes should be placed in a cooler with plenty of ice and held at a maximum temperature of 40 degrees.

Drink plenty of water to avoid heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke and remember that alcohol consumption can also promote dehydration and increase risk.

EC Performing Art Center Established in 2002, East County Performing Arts Center is the largest dance studio in Brentwood with a student base that spans Discovery Bay, Oakley and Antioch. WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

It’s Bearly Worn!

With July 4th only a week away, the clouds have disappeared and the sun is shining bright.

The local corn is well into harvest and the peaches & apricots are ripening in the sun. With summer officially here, it is always a good time to head for the store to find that perfect outfit for warmer weather. With that in mind, my assignment this month brings me to a store that is a breath of fresh air.

The name is Bearly Worn Boutique and it is located in the shopping center on Balfour with Vic Stewarts Restaurant.

I had seen their ad in the Grapevine and couldn’t wait to peek in, as I am an avid consignment and used clothing store shopper. This one is uniquely for children, newborn to 10 years old. I knew it was going to be great when I parked my car. The sign out front welcomes you in and the place is IMMACULATE! Now, that counts 10 extra points.

They sell new and used clothing and new teddy bears, shirts, pants, shorts, shoes, dresses and diaper bags. They are also an authorized Hello Kitty and Mega Blocks dealer. The secret is, they accept clean, used and new children’s clothing and pay the consigner on the spot. All you have to do is call to make an appointment and they will explain how it works and the prices they will pay for your items. Then, depending on the demand, they will give you a call when you can bring them down to sell. How simple is that? And no more waiting 30 days to get paid.

The idea started for the owner, Siobhan Blume, when she became a mother in 1991. She was buying used children’s clothing from various Bay Area stores and noticed that none of them were clean and organized. So, when she moved her family back to Brentwood in 2009, she set out to open her own boutique and give Brentwood a whole new shopping experience.

I got to meet Taylor, the girl behind the desk and spent some time enjoying the experience and her courteous and helpful personality. It is absolutely darling and everything is neat and

organized. All the clothing hangs from wooden hangers and is clearly marked in the proper sizes. It was like shopping at Nordstrom’s with an 80% coupon.

There are some dental emergencies which can happen in day to day life, as well. If you think it is an emergency, then you are probably right, so call us as soon as possible and, in the meantime, here’s what you can do until you get to our office:

Dental Emergencies Summer is just around the corner and whether you are planning on a vacation to river raft or roll on the beach, there are some adventures you will want to avoid and one of them is a dental emergency. It is always a good idea to get a checkup with the dentist well before you go on your vacation to avoid unhappy situations. If you are aware of a tooth which may need a root canal treatment, then you certainly want to complete it before boarding the airplane because changes in the cabin pressure affect the pressure inside the tooth and pain is sure to follow.

If you are wearing dentures, get a second set of dentures a few weeks before you leave so the fit is adjusted before you go on vacation. You would not want to find your vacation cut short by losing you dentures either. Be sure to stock up on dental supplies which you normally use,

If a filling is broken, save the filling so we can take a look at it. If the tooth is sensitive, protect with a pinch of sugarless gum. If the crown has come off, sometimes it can be reused, but try to bring the crown for the dentist to check and see what remedy can be done. If a tooth is knocked out and if we can treat you within an hour, then chances are, we can reseat the tooth in place for good.

Try not to touch the tooth root to prevent damaging the delicate nerves. If possible, try to replace the tooth where it belongs or keep it moist in milk. Toothache is one of the most common emergency pain and medication can give temporary relief until you get to the dentist, but please do not place aspirin near the tooth, as it will irritate the gum or even cause ulceration. Lacerations or injuries to the jaw should be taken seriously and do not delay getting to the dentist or the hospital because delaying could result

in further damage. If a full denture or partial denture is damaged, try to keep all the pieces and bring it to the dentist.

Do not risk home repairs, as the glue can damage the actual denture itself. Get to the dentist right away if you have a bent orthodontic appliance, and if the clasp or wire is rubbing the soft tissue, place a piece of sugarless gum against it until you get to us.

Once the emergency situation is taken care of, be sure to consider your options for improved dental health by keeping your regular dental checkups with the dentist and to fix dental problems to avoid any surprising, painful dental emergency situations.

makes good sense to have a bucket of water or a garden hose, close by in case something goes awry. In the time it takes to run for a hose a fire has the time to become a raging blaze.

Backyard Safety It’s that time of year again when we enjoy spending more time outdoors than in. When the barbeque gets fired up and when a cool, refreshing swim helps to neutralize the occasional spike in temperature. As such, it’s a good idea to insure that the back yard – and everything in it – is safe.

Concrete patio and wood deck surface irregularities should be inspected for trip hazards. An uneven surface caused by a crack in the concrete – or a loose deck board – is easy to repair. With a wood deck simply screw down deck boards that are “flapping in the wind.” Use 3” construction screws that are coated for use outdoors. With concrete the job is a bit harder, but an electric grinder can be rented that will “feather” a bad joint and gradually lower the high side of the crack so that the trip hazard disappears. These recommendations don’t take appearance into account, but if the budget allows, a coat of concrete stain will cover a blemish caused by grinding. If your budget doesn’t allow for staining this season, at least all walking surfaces will be safe.

The barbecue should be given a thorough cleaning with special attention paid to the gas valves and the burners.

Spider webs and insect eggs can partially clog these elements and can be a danger. When it comes to gas appliances, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” Clean all orifices and ports with a high-pressure stream of water, a pipe cleaner or use compressed air. And why not, when it’s clean it looks better.

If your fire is going to be in a pit, make sure that it is surrounded by a ring of non-combustible material (stones, brick, etc.) and that the area immediately overhead is unobstructed by low hanging branches and other overgrowth. Also, it
