Burning Fat Matters More Than Losing Weight

The problem starts with how we are all told to measure success. A standard weight measuring scale gives little information. Someone can actually be very lean with a well-hydrated and muscular body, yet they may weigh in at a higher number than someone of the same height that is actually fatter. After all, muscle is denser than fat.

The primary reason for excess fat is often improper diet along and a lack of activity. Stress complicates things further by triggering release of the hormone cortisol that causes the liver to produce excess sugar. The excess sugar triggers hunger, so we’re more likely to eat more when stressed and, as a result, gain more fat.

When it comes to losing weight, most Americans are impatient, seeking to shed pounds as quickly as possible. But many traditional diet and exercise plans often lead to disappointment and frustration -and can even make you less healthy. The problem may stem from the fact that basically every diet tells us we need to lose weight. But for most people, it’s more important to focus on ways to accelerate fat loss, rather than weight loss. “Many conventional diets and popular exercise routines can actually make you fatter and more frustrated,” say Dian Griesel, co-author with her brother Tom Griesel of the new diet and fitness book “TurboCharged.” “The only thing any of us wants to lose is excess body fat, not our bones, muscle, water or other essentials. Yet, these are what typically

Early Orthodontic Treatment and the Benefits Bones and muscles form the framework of the face. Either genetics or environmental factors may have an influence on the development of the child’s jaw and muscles. For example, the child may have inherited a small jaw from one parent and large teeth from the other. Or, the child might suck his or her thumb, have breathing problems, or large adenoid glands, which could influence the growth of the jaw and the face muscles. When the bones, muscles, and teeth work well together, they create a comfortable, stable bite and a pleasing appearance. When the bones and muscles grow improperly the teeth do not fit together well which can cause an unbalanced profile and other problems. In a young child, bones and muscles grow

There are some signs that early orthodontic treatment may be necessary due to jaw and muscle problems. In many children the upper jaw is large or too forward or the lower jaw is too far back or small, causing an increased overbite. In some children, the upper jaw is too small or too far back or the lower jaw is too forward, causing an underbite. Sometimes, the upper jaw is not wide enough so the upper teeth may fit inside lower teeth causing a crossbite. In some cases, the jaw is not big enough to accommodate the developing teeth, causing crowding or the upper jaw is too short, causing a deep bite. Some children have a strong tongue thrusting habit or thumb sucking habit, causing an open bite. Between the ages of 5 and 10, some permanent teeth have already appeared and during this time the bones and muscles are growing rapidly. This is when the dentist can influence their growth in the right direction to get the best possible bite and pleasing appearance for the child, and to minimize the child from getting

jaw surgery later. Early treatment may last a year or longer. Later, a second phase of full braces may be needed after all the permanent teeth appear. Therefore, early treatment enhances self esteem by improving the child’s appearance, preventing severe bite problems in the future and minimizing removal of permanent teeth in the future as well. Therefore, it is very important to get children evaluated by the dentist regularly for the regular checkups to make sure if they need early orthodontic treatment to ensure a harmonious development of both the jaw and the teeth.

This is, in fact, the case and after speaking with a local lender, Mrs. Karen Bates who is the owner and founder of Military Home Programs, Inc. and, in fact, served eight years in the military herself as an Air Traffic Controller, I once again became excited about VA loans. VA Financing On my recent trip to San Diego I learned a lot about the city itself and the history it holds… Once dubbed a “Navy town,” San Diego is now the second largest city in California with approximately one fourth of its total employment coming by way of the military. Service jobs are a plenty as nearly one third of the entire U.S. Naval Pacific Fleet is home ported in San Diego Bay, and even more importantly, the city itself is proud of the men and women who serve their country. A prime example of this fact is the USS Midway; the longest serving carrier in the U.S. Navy which now continues its service as an interactive museum, tribute and education center. Not only that but San Diego also plays host to the yearly MCAS Miramar Air Show, the largest air show in the country!

Unfortunately, based on the many bank owned and short-sale transactions in the Brentwood area VA financing has more or less been put on the back burner. Banks do not like to accept VA offers as many lenders have never touched a VA loan which makes deals sink faster than...I’ll let you finish your own Navy analogy. As a potential veteran buyer however – assuming you find the right lender – VA loans are one of the biggest benefits out there for you; there is no down-payment required and no mortgage insurance to pay. You’ll receive true 100% financing (again without having to pay any mortgage insurance) and the seller is required by law to credit you for closing costs! A somewhat forgotten about option that is truly beneficial to any would be veteran

purchasers; I truly hope to see more VA purchases come across my desk again sooner than later. Re-screening Window Frames If insects are invading your home, it could be that your window screens are in need of repair. If the screen frame, usually made of wood or metal, is in good shape there is no need for replacement of the entire unit; simply re-screen the frame. When re-screening, instead of using ordinary metal or vinyl material, consider a dense vinyl mesh. This material will not only keep out bugs but will also prevent a significant amount of heat from the sun from entering your home. An average-size screen will take only about 15 minutes for a do-it-yourselfer, with a cost under $5. For a screen with an aluminum frame, you’ll need a pair of needle-nose pliers, a razor knife with a sharp blade and a spline installation tool or spline roller, which looks like a pizza cutter.

In most aluminum-framed screens, the screen material is held in place by a vinyl bead called spline which is inserted into a channel that runs the entire perimeter of the frame. You need to remove the existing spline in order to remove the old screen material and install the new screen material. Use the needle-nose pliers to grasp one end of the spline, usually found at a corner, and peel it back until reaching the other end. The spline generally is installed in one piece, but due to aging may have to be removed in pieces. Once the spline has been removed, simply peel back the old screen and dispose of it and the spline. To install the new screen, cut a piece of vinyl screen material approximately two or three inches longer than the frame in both directions. Next lay the screen over the frame and, starting at a corner, insert one end of the new spline into the channel. Once the spline has been started with a steady downward pressure, use the spline roller to pack the remaining spline in one continuous piece around the entire perimeter of the frame. When you reach the corner where you began, use a razor knife to carefully trim

any excess spline. Again, with the razor knife, trim the excess screen material at the joint where the spline meets the aluminum frame. The process for wood is much the same, with a few exceptions. First, while some wood frames have channels like aluminum ones, others do not. Those with channels are handled much like their aluminum counterparts, generally with the addition of a small piece of wood trim to conceal the channel. Wood frames with no channel rely on staples rather than spline for strength. Once the screen material is stapled into place at the perimeter, the staples should be concealed with a small piece of wood trim. After installing the trim with small finish nails, use a razor knife to trim the excess. And, that’s all there is to it. Summer Pet Tips With the weather warming up, our pets and ourselves will spend more time outside. We need to be diligent in protecting our pets from the heat and sun. Like us, they are prone to heatstroke, sunburn, dehydration, and skin cancers but with a few tips our pets can enjoy summer too! 1: Some dogs and cats can get sunburned on their ears, nose, and back if they are light colored or hairless. Limit their exposure to sunshine and keep them inside on very hot, sunny days. Your vet may also recommend a type of pet approved sunscreen for your pet that you

Keep Your Car Running Cool as Summer Travel Heats Up It’s hot outside, which means summer is here! During the summer many of our TirePro Plus customers make their annual pilgrimage to their favorite summer vacation destinations. Pack yourself and your family into the car and head out onto the open road, but remember to also get your automobile ready for the getaway. Review your automobile’s basic maintenance needs to ensure that your car is in tip-top shape. Don’t forget to test your vehicle’s coolant levels. Also, do not neglect the condition of the engine hoses. Engine hoses are the least strong structural element on an engine’s cooling system. Engine hoses are made up of flexible rubber, which absorbs any movements between the radiator and the engine. Not only are your engine’s hoses made to resist the greatest extremes of heat and cold, but they are also designed to transport coolant under high pressure.

Electrochemical degradation (ECD) is the main origin of hose failure and is not easily noticeable. ECD afflicts hoses from the inside out, resulting in little cracks in the hose lining. Acids and impurities from the liquid coolant can potentially weaken the yarn, which reinforces the hose. Eventually, it is possible for little pinholes to germinate in the hose. If the case is severe enough, it is also possible for the hose to break under the stress of engine heat, pressure, and constant flexing.

the engine hose feels firm but at the same time pliable, then it is in satisfactory working condition. If the hose is soft and/ or mushy, then ECD might have already taken over.

We encourage you take a little time to perform some basic hose maintenance. If you do, you can avoid possible hose deterioration:

- Unclean coolant contributes to ECD. Flush and replace the engine’s coolant according to the vehicle’s owner’s manual.

- Check the coolant-recovery tank frequently to guarantee proper fluid level. All coolant-recovery tanks have marker lines on them to indicate the required fill level for hot and cold engine temperatures. If the coolant-recovery tank continues to be low after recurrent fillings, a leak is likely the issue. If a coolant leak exists, you may also note white, light green, or pink coolant residue stripes on or around the engine. - ECD happens mostly around the engine hose clamps. To check for ECD: when the engine is cool, squeeze each hose between your thumb and forefinger. If
