Harvest Time in Brentwood recently HARVEST TIME met for a photo shoot to help launch the 2014 Membership Drive and their inaugural 2014 Brentwood Harvest Time Festival.

The Festival will be held in Historic Downtown City Park and Civic Center on Saturday, July 12 & Sunday, July 13, celebrating the farmlands harvest.

Harvest Time in Brentwood is a 501c6 non-profit organization whose mission is promote the U-pick farms, roadside stands and agricultural retail marketing outlets in East Contra Costa County.

Harvest Time and its members offer unique and rewarding ag-tourism opportunities to visitors to enjoy farm fresh, delicious products, learn about farming, it’s history, and appreciate the nutritious and economical value of local grown products.

This year, the annual trail map will present over 50 farm stand locations.

The printed map is available at all Harvest Time stands, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and various other locations throughout the area. It can be downloaded from the Harvest Time website at harvest4you.com and is available on the FREE Harvest Time App on iphone & android versions.

Businesses can get a listing on the APP to direct the 180,000 farm stands visitors to their business for an annual fee of $220. Call the Grapevine for more information.

The festival will be two days celebrating yesterday, today and tomorrow of Harvest Time in Brentwood. Families are encouraged to spent the day enjoying fine wine, ice cold beer, great food, fresh produce and local entertainment while learning about farming and it’s products. Bring your family, lawn chairs & blankets to this quaint festival full of small town charm.

No outside alcohol is allowed.

Fluoride Toothpaste For Children Fluoride toothpaste has been recommended for more than 50 years to prevent and control dental caries. More than 25 percent of children have or had dental caries by the time they enter kindergarten.

The use of fluoride toothpaste in infants and children has been changed during this period of time in an effort to maximize the caries prevention and to minimize the risk of dental fluorosis.

Children younger than 5 years tend to swallow toothpaste while brushing.

Older children are more able to spit out toothpaste consistently after brushing. Many researchers have found that brushing with fluoride toothpaste reduces dental caries in school children but fluoride toothpaste use at an early age can be associated with dental fluorosis. This depends on

the number of times the child brushed his or her teeth with the toothpaste, the amount of toothpaste dispensed every time the child brushes and the fluoride concentration of the tooth paste. Children are also exposed to fluoride through consumption of food and beverages.

Before starting fluoride therapy in children, whether it be fluoride supplements, toothpaste or professional topical applications, all children should undergo a caries risk assessment by the dentist and then get recommendations accordingly to prevent or control the dental caries or cavities. This is an important, critical step in developing a personalized prevention plan. The best predictor of a person developing dental cavities in the future is the presence of dental caries. Most 1 year old children do not have dental caries and it is difficult to predict which of these children will become the approximately 40 percent of children who experience dental caries in their baby teeth.

Therefore, considering the best available evidence and the continued

high caries rate in children, the American Dental Association currently advises parents and caregivers to brush with water, and to consult with a dentist before using fluoride toothpaste for children younger than two years. Use of a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is recommended for children from two to six years of age. The ADA also recommends for children younger than 3 years to begin brushing teeth as soon as they come into the mouth by using fluoride toothpaste no more than a smear or the size of a grain of rice. Brush teeth thoroughly twice per day as directed by the dentist. Children 3 to 6 years of age should be supervised while brushing to minimize the swallowing of toothpaste. It is also important to keep up with regular checkups with the dentist to prevent and to protect children’s teeth from getting cavities.

Local Wakesurfer Vanessa Vincent An accomplished athlete and brand ambassador with over 10 years of brand and international product representation, 28-year-old Vanessa Vincent possesses a look that conveys both athleticism and feminine beauty.

For those who are unfamiliar with wakesurfing, it is a newer sport that is unlike the traditional boating sports that require continuous tether to the boat. You start by being pulled up and as the wake is formed, you can release all connection to the boat and throw the rope aside. The wake, like that of an ocean wave, renders sufficient means to propel surfers of any level.

Down the river, lake and or even the ocean, you will be propelled along with progression, enabling you to air out and do many tricks, as seen with other board related sports.

Hailing from near Discovery Bay, CA, Vanessa can most often be found training with her Centurion teammates in the Delta, one of the West Coast’s most popular wakeboarding and wakesurfing destinations. She is not only committed to her progression as an inland wakesurfer, but being a creature of salt water, also enjoys ocean surfing. Vanessa finds the ocean waves to be her absolute happy place. When she is not in the water you will find her practicing yoga where she finds her connection with her mind and body.

A relative newcomer to the sport of wakesurfing, Vanessa has made some big accomplishments in a very short amount of time. Most notably is her World Championship in 2012. One Tool Does it All One of the fun things about being home improvement reporters is that we have the opportunity to test all types of home improvement products, everything from appliances to plumbing fixtures to cleaning products and more.

Manufacturers send us their latest and greatest in hopes that we will offer a favorable review. Of all the products we review, our favorite category is tools.

You name it; compressors, nail guns, drills, saws, we love playing with, sorry, “reviewing” tools of every kind.

This time around we’ve had a chance to review a new and unique multi-tool. What makes a multi-tool so special is that it can plunge-cut directly into the face of a surface without causing a ragged edge.

Want to cut out a perfectly square piece of sheetrock to install a cut-in electric box? Want to cut through nails to remove a piece of interior or exterior trim, without damaging the surrounding area? Want to detail sand a piece of furniture for refinishing? A multi-tool is the answer.

Thus far, we have given you a basic insight into what all multi-tools will do. Thus, to this point, one would assume that all multitools are basically alike. But this is where Ridgid leaves the rest behind. The Ridgid multi-tool is unbelievably cool. It leads the pack. When we use it on a job site, the other workers are always amazed at how different it is from all the rest. We’re talking about Ridgid Tool Company’s very unique multi-tool, the JobMax. A typical multi-tool is a cucumber shaped oscillating motor with its operating tip located at the end where various blades can be attached for cutting and sanding.

The JobMax doesn’t end with cutting and sanding. That’s because the cutting/ sanding head can be interchanged with a myriad of other attachments.

They include: a jigsaw attachment, a reciprocating saw attachment, a right angle drill/driver attachment, an auto hammer attachment, and an electric ratchet attachment. The accessories run about $60 each and having them all allows both handyman and contractor alike to eliminate the need for several bulky tools.

Simply slip the needed attachment onto the power handle, press the two-finger, variable speed trigger and go! The tool has an on-board light (our weak old eyes

really appreciate that) and the tool is amazingly powerful at 3 amps.

We routinely cut wallboard, plywood, dimensional lumber and nails and we love how easy it is to change attachments, no tools necessary. Press two recessed buttons at once and the head is released from the power handle. Next, simply snap on the next attachment. Each attachment can be snapped into place in any of for directional positions allowing better access to the work. Believe us when we say that this particular feature is invaluable. It allows us to be able to see the cut line and the blade at the same time and from any position (above, below, to the side) while having the on-board light shining directly onto the work AND with the trigger in a comfortable position.

When we were kids, our dad had a Ridgid hand operated pipe threader, which we inherited. There is nothing like having a quality tool that will last for generations.

The tub of the garden holds twenty gallons of water that's recycled up through the top to water all the plants with a timer every fifteen minutes. Nutrients are added to the water for plant growth and ph levels are checked weekly.

The Tower Garden uses one tenth of the water and land required by traditional growers and the produce grows three times faster. This efficient aeroponic growing system allows you to grow massive amounts of produce in a tiny amount of space in about half the time of traditional soil based agriculture.

GET YOUR GARDEN GROWING DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere.

Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year.

Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects.

Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants.
