One word “pro’s.” I have a Samsung Galaxy 3 with a cracked screen. With eBay $20 screen and youtube, I can do it. It looked easy, right? Who’s Who... in East County

About a year ago, Laura Rodriguez decided to give up her career in corporate America for a healthier and happier life. Laura holds an MBA from Cornell University, and has lived in Buenos Aires, Paris, Miami, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay area. Having passed the big 4-0, she decided that life was too precious to be traveling constantly, working endless hours, and stressing so much. It is inspiring that she is opening her own childcare business and completely and courageously changing her life.

Laura began by thoroughly researching the industry, visiting kindergartens, family childcare homes and centers, and consulting with various local childcare organizations. She also talked to all her friends with children, from different cultural backgrounds, to discuss what they felt was most needed in childcare. Laura found out that the area needed childcare for overnights, parent trips, weekends, and unexpected situations. She also saw the need for healthier programs with lots of outdoor activities, summer camps, after school programs, and special activities classes, like drama and art development. TRAVEL TIME How about a taste of Scotland— literally? It’s time for the annual Scottish Games and Gathering in Pleasanton August 30th and 31st.

The Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s Scottish Gathering and Games are the largest in the U.S. and, in some years, the largest in the world. It is not unusual to have more than 30 pipe bands at the event, plus hundreds of athletes, dancers and other participants.

And yes, you can easily shop till you drop, as well.

The Caledonian Club of San Francisco was founded in 1866, a year after the end of the Civil War, and its inaugural Scottish Gathering and Games, a family picnic with athletic contests, was held in a field at 12th and Market Streets in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day 1866.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 could not stop the Scottish Games from going on, nor could two world wars or a Depression. In fact, the Caledonian Club’s Games have been held for more than

60% of the years since the United States was founded! The 2014 Games will be the 149th continuous year of operation, which is the longest outside of Scotland.

Long before colonists began to settle the New World, Scotland had a lengthy history and culture. In Scotland, Heavy Athletics Events were already being held at least 1,000 years ago! Historians believe that some of the Heavy Events originated during Druid times. Heavy Events began as tests of strength and conditioning for Scottish troops. A tree trunk would be made into a caber and tossed by the strongest military men. Smooth rocks from river beds would be heaved for distance.

Lead weights would be tossed underhand over a bar more than twice as high as the athlete. The competitor who accumulated the most points from the contests would be the Heavy Events Champion.

Now, Highland Games are held annually wherever there are enough Scots to produce an event. It is a traditional method of passing Scottish culture from generation to generation. During the past few generations, Highland Games have evolved into ticketed festivals. Games are held throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere.

You should know that this event in Pleasanton is the largest annual gathering in America and, in addition to games, there are many vendors that will be happy to sell you Scottish wares, jewelry and food and clothing.

It is held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day Weekend with hours of 9 to 6 both days.

Flossing and Flossing Alternatives Brushing and flossing are the gold standard for oral hygiene as we all know. Dental floss has been available since 1815, yet more than seventy percent of the population doesn’t see the value of daily flossing in spite of the” flossing nag” they get every time they are in the dental office for their regular cleaning visits.

The reasons for not flossing include pain, flossing takes too much time, gagging and not wanting to put their fingers in their mouth. There are a wide variety of floss types available, including flavored, fluoride coated, xylitol coated, individual flossers and floss holders. Despite the variety of flosses available in the market, studies show an average of only thirteen percent of adults use dental floss daily.

Alternatives to flossing are available that

may be easier to use. A popular floss alternative is soft picks. These are plastic picks that fit easily between the teeth. The tiny projections are effective to disrupt bacterial plaque forming in between the teeth. The significance of reducing the accumulation of bacterial plaque in between the teeth leads to a reduction in gum disease and also cavities from developing in between the teeth.

Other alternatives are using an air flosser or a water flosser or a water pick. These alternatives may cost more and may have a learning curve, so it might take some time before getting comfortable with these gadgets. Both daily oral hygiene and frequent dental hygiene visits are important for maintaining oral health. Oral hygiene instructions can be generalized or tailored to each person’s needs.

Whatever methods may be available as flossing alternatives, it is the individual motivation which is important to help in plaque reduction. It is very important to find ones individual needs, what your oral health goals are and what you are, willing to do to achieve that level of health.

Regular dental visits are important, but

what every individual does each day to control oral infection with a good oral hygiene regimen is more important.

Why Won’t my House Sell?

Recently I visited a couple ready to put their home on the market and set their moving plans in motion. They took great care in maintaining their property and pride of ownership was clearly displayed in their home. When it came time to discuss the list price, it became obvious that the Sellers felt their home had considerably more value than my own research showed. Wanting Top-Dollar is expected from every home seller, but sometimes Sellers can take outside information and transform it into an unrealistic expectation; setting the tone for a long uncomfortable listing experience and frustrating price reductions. In this situation, the Seller was using the cost per square foot of brand new homes being built some blocks away. I wished my friends success in their sales efforts, and two months later, their Listing Agent has already reduced the price once and I expect will do it again.

A good indicator that your home is priced in the zone is if Buyers are taking time to preview the home. If you’re seeing regular showings but no offers, you may be close to an offer and sometimes just need patience. Your property, if eligible, may just need staging, painting, updated landscaping, or some other affordable change. If Buyers are simply not showing up… you can be assured the issue is price.

The challenge that most Sellers should recognize is that getting visitors to your home is your first priority. Once you do that, your goal is to get offers submitted.

Getting a potential Buyer to the table is when negotiating can begin. As a Real Estate Agent, I will tell you that the Buyer who gets the most attention is the one that has presented an offer in writing.

Conserving Water Water is wasted during: landscape irrigation, hosing down walks and drives, washing automobile, dishwashing, washing clothes, flushing toilets, showering and overheating by a water heater. It’s also wasted when pressure regulators are set too high.

Most water gets used in the bathroom, so that is where you have to be most careful.

Don’t flush water away unnecessarily.

Most toilets installed before the early 1980s used five to seven gallons of water per flush. Those installed after that time disposed of 3.5 gallons per flush. Today, almost every state is mandating the use of 1.6 gallon toilets. If you are like most people, toilet use in your house accounts for 40 percent of water use. Converting from a 7-gallon toilet to a 1.6-gallon one could reduce overall water use by 25 percent or more. A leaky toilet can cost you 50 gallons of water or more per day, regardless of its size. To find out if your toilet leaks, remove the tank lid and

add about 7 drops of red or blue food coloring. Do not flush for about 15 to 20 minutes. If the water in the bowl colors, a leak exists.

Low-flow water fixtures also save on waste, especially at the showerhead. You may have a showerhead in your home that allows a flow of 7 gallons per minute. A five-minute shower can use 35 gallons of water. A low-flow showerhead (3.5 gallons per minute) can reduce the water used in a shower by half.

There is another hidden expense when one showers, and it manifests itself each month when you get your gas and electric bill. The less water you use for a shower, the less hot water needed to get the job done. And, by the way, low-flow showerheads are aerated and feel similar to a shower you might take with an oldfashioned showerhead.

Water heating is an important issue.

The hotter the water in your heater, the more cold water it will take to cool it in a mixing situation (clothes washer, shower, etc.). Bleed your water heater every six months or so. Air in the tank will cause overheating, and might result in water being lost through the pressure-overflow valve. The easiest way to bleed the water heater is to open the drain valve at the

bottom until the water coming out stops sputtering. Usually two to three gallons are lost. A bucket, eye protection, rain gear and heavy rubber gloves will help.

Remember the water that will come out is hot.

The kitchen and laundry also can be waste centers. Dishwashers and clothes washers can use 15 to 50 gallons of water per load. Be a good manager and only run full loads. For clothes washing, cut down on recommended detergent levels (approximately 20 percent), and eliminate extra rinses. Use completely full loads or adjust the water level, if your machine allows.

During the summer, outdoor water use skyrockets. Washing an automobile can use 100 gallons and washing down a sidewalk easily can use up 60 gallons or more.

Another way to save water is to precisely control water pressure as it enters your home with a water-pressure regulator. If you have a regulator, adjust it so that the pressure does not exceed 60 lbs.

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Brentwood Celebrates the Farmlands Harvest Here it is the middle of July and the farmlands are busting at the seams with local grown produce from members of Harvest Time in Brentwood. For almost 40 years, these farms have opened their fields to visitors to come pick fresh fruit and vegetables and experience first hand what it tastes like fresh from the tree. How fortunate I am to have the assignment to snoop their first inaugural Brentwood Harvest Time Festival on July 12 & 13.

I arrived early to witness the Little Veggies Costume Contestants follow Mayor Taylor through the farmers market in downtown. These 20+ children under six were applauded as they paraded in their vegetable and fruit costumes. It ended at the entrance of City Park where local dignitaries gave a brief presentation, followed by a blessing from Councilman Joel Bryant. John Slatten, one of the

original farmers who started Harvest Time spoke of its history and how much he welcomed the event. The finale to opening ceremonies included a ribbon cutting from the Chamber and a flyover from two Delta Patriot Jets.

By 12:00 the park was full of families enjoying the free festival. They had beer, wine, roasted corn, a sand sculpture underway, a children’s area, farmers market, over 18 artisan vendors, SF style food trucks, miniature John Deere peddle powered tractor races, corn shucking & eating contests, cooking demonstrations and the community center was packed full with over 50 local businesses sharing information and handing out free samples and giveaways.

The main stage offered non-stop music all day with local entertainers and the downtown businesses competed for the best decorated scarecrow. I think I liked the feeling of family and community the best as I wandered around the park. It looked like 25% of the crowd were kids and they were enjoying the water park, making headbands out of cornhusks and throwing the Frisbee with Dad. As a native from this area, I have watched events come and go and I can honestly say I enjoyed this one the most. It was

filled with fun for the whole family and truly represented Brentwood’s small town charm. I spoke to many of the people attending and the general consensus was this was wonderful and just what the community needed. Another thing I liked was the bright green shirts worn by the volunteers. I asked one of the organizers how many volunteers they had and she said over 200 signed up to help sell beer, wine, water, roasted corn and work the ticket booths, assist with security and help out in any way possible. One volunteer told me that they were thrilled to be a part of the festival and said that the best part was when the tents started to go up and everyone was lending a hand to put it all together. Another said they just wanted to be part of the history when the Harvest Time Festival started.

All in all, I have heard that the community loved this hometown event. The Monthly Grapevine would like to give Harvest Time in Brentwood, organizers Steve and Kathy Barr and all who helped and supported its success twelve clusters of our very own Monthly Grapevine grapes for bringing this festival back to downtown. Who will be snooped next? It could be you.
