Let’s use a car dealership’s TV commercial as an example. In 30 seconds, there’s only time to gloss over the details of a closeout sale and have enough time to tell viewers where to find the car lot. On radio, you can’t even see the cars.

That’s why print advertisements can boost floor traffic for any business. A full-page ad can show off all the cars, with prices and finance rates, and include a map to the dealership. A reader can study the ad without having the typical TV commercial announcer yelling at her to buy now before it’s too late. You can choose the correct size of print advertising to meet your needs and budget. If you go to a TV or radio station, your only choices are likely a :10, :15 or :30 spot. But with newspaper advertising, you can study the rate card to choose to advertise just your logo, address and phone number, or a full-color ad that can highlight your entire inventory. For businesses new to advertising, buying a print ad is a more low-key decision than trying to decide how to produce a complicated, expensive TV commercial. The couponing craze makes a compelling argument to buy print advertising as well. Many businesses yearn for an increase in floor traffic. Putting a coupon into a print ad is an ideal way for them to get more people through their doors. TV or radio commercials may say, “mention this ad for 5% off,” but that’s likely not the sure-fire traffic booster as having a printed coupon that gets into the customer’s hand. Plus, a business has

an easier time managing expiration dates with a print ad than in the fine print that flies by in a TV commercial. True, there are some places in a publication that are more desirable than others. But you can definitely get noticed through a magazine insert. When a reader pulls out the inserts from the middle of our publication, their hands will be on the ad and they can’t help but glance at it, especially if it is in color. In a recent poll of our readers, a whopping 93% told us they prefer print advertising to Internet and other types of advertising. Print advertisements may not be as flashy as their counterparts on radio or television, but for clients interested in a cost-effective, no-frills approach to boosting sales, a full-color image can put green into their cash registers. EC European Auto Works East County European Autoworks opened its doors in December 2007, bringing a much-needed service to East County. They are a full service automotive repair and diagnostic center, specializing in Audi, Volkswagen and BMW service and repair. The business also has a licensed Smog Technician on staff to offer smog repairs. The inspiration for opening East County European Autoworks came from owner, Freddie Apodaca’s love of the European sports car and the lack of any repair facility that specialized in those cars in East County. He saw a void and a need in the market and knew he could fill the void with EC European Autoworks. Freddie graduated with honors from Sequoia Institute in 2001 where he studied Automotive Technology, Strategic and Advanced Diagnosis and Service Management. Having a great interest in European car brands, he began working for Livermore Audi in 2001, while completing his training at SI and progressed quickly from a Technician to the Shop Foreman. The education he received from Sequoia Institute, along with the hands-on training he received during his many years with Livermore Audi gave him the skill and know-
how to make running EC European Autoworks seem easy and very rewarding. Freddie tells us, “The best part of owning East County European Autoworks is the hands-on work I get to do on some of the most state of the art automobiles ever built. It is gratifying to figure out what is wrong, repair it and return the vehicle to my smiling customers.” He goes on to say, “The service I provide my customers is so rewarding, and it makes going to work every day more like fun than work!” At EC European Autoworks, they go above and beyond other auto repair facilities in East County with their expert training, attention to detail, quality workmanship and love of the job. I felt he gave me honest answers about the repairs that were necessary, and also informed me that I only needed to replace one of the engine cooling fans, rather than both, which had been recommended by another shop. some good news in that that Hawaiian Airlines will introduce daily service to Honolulu from Oakland after the first of the year. They have seen there is a need for more service from Oakland to Hawaii and now have the equipment to provide that service.

It’s Over Right? You Ask What We Are Talking About. Summer is now a part of our past as we move on to the fall and winter months. We do want to tell you that now is the time to book your holiday travel plans. Airfare especially continues to climb and the closer we get to both Thanksgiving and the end of the year holidays and festivities, the higher the price will be for airfare. And if you are planning a trip to the Hawaiian Islands you should be aware that tourism all year has been on an upswing in the Islands of Aloha and that is the reason we do not see many special deals and discounts. a ship here in our homeport of San Francisco. We are getting the Star Princess beginning in spring of 2014 and going till spring of 2015. As in the past, she will be performing 7 day coastal cruises, 15 day Hawaii cruises and 10 day Alaska cruises as well as 10 day Mexico sailings. The Mexico service is greatly increased, as these cruises will go to Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and the added ports of Loreto and La Paz. General Dentist & Orthodontic Success The American Association of Orthodontists recommends orthodontic screening by age seven or even earlier if a parent or the dentists expect an orthodontic problem. By this age several permanent teeth have erupted in most children allowing the dentist to effectively evaluate the orthodontic condition. Most 7 year olds do not require orthodontic intervention at this age. But somtimes, if the problem is not discovered in a timely fashion, it may be difficult or not possible to treat later in life and may need major surgical corrections to treat the orthodontic problem. This is why it is very important that no orthodontic problem is overlooked. Adults also benefit from getting orthodontic therapy to correct teeth misalignment, crowding or bite problems. The benefits on the long term oral health of having straight teeth in a proper bite cannot be

Habits like thumb or finger sucking, biting the cheek, grinding, mouth breathing, speech difficulties, difficulty or not able to close lips together can be corrected with orthodontic treatment. In adults, as previously mentioned, getting braces is not only for cosmetic reasons but also before getting implants or a bridge work done, it is a good idea to check if you need to get braces. Home Inspections ... Money Well Spent! The process of buying a home involves time. We know this because it can take days, weeks, or months to find the home of your dreams, so when you finally get the call from your Realtor that the offer you presented has been accepted, you jump for joy and breath a sigh of relief that all the driving and looking around is finally over. In addition to the Home Inspection, it’s customary to have a Termite inspection, a Roof inspection, and a Sewer Lateral Pipe inspection. These primary four inspections will give the Buyer a thorough understanding of their new home’s condition as well as written reports and suggestions from the Professional.

Trimming Doors - A Free-Swinging Solution New carpeting can do wonders to improve the appearance of your home, but if it’s thicker than the previous floor covering, it can cause doors to drag, making them difficult to open and close. The solution to smooth-swinging doors is trimming the bottom. Cutting a door, solid or hollow-core, can be relatively easy if you have the right tools and take a few minor precautions. While many folks choose a handsaw, a circular saw also can make a uniform cut and will require quite a bit less elbow grease, especially when several doors are involved. When you trim a door with a circular saw you must use caution to preserve and protect the door’s appearance and to prevent the saw from splintering and tearing the wood fibers at the cut line. This is especially challenging with hollow core doors. Start by marking the height of the cut at a point where
you are sure the door will swing freely without touching the carpet. Next, remove the door from its hinges. Use a small hammer and a nail or nail punch to tap the hinge pin up and out. Once all of the hinge pins have been removed, place the door onto a pair of sawhorses. It’s a good idea to use towels or old scraps of carpeting or pad isolate the door from the sawhorses. This will prevent damage to the door finish. Use a straightedge and a pencil to mark the cut line. Too avoid damaging the door during cutting, use a sharp utility knife to deeply score the cut line. By the way, as it did when making the pencil mark the straightedge will be helpful when scoring. Several light passes with the utility knife should be made. The deeper the scored line the better. With the cut line scored, make a cut ever so slightly below the score line. Scoring prevents surface tearing and chipping that can result when any kind of sawing is taking place. If you have elected to use a circular power saw, be sure to use a finishing blade that has many teeth per inch. The more teeth, the finer the cut. A good finish blade is far less apt to tear the surface. A carbide tipped blade is also a must regardless of the number
of teeth per inch. The carbide tip will not be affected if a staple or a nail is encountered during cutting. Use caution when choosing a power over a hand saw. If the saw table is dirty or a bit rusty or rough, it can mar the door’s stained or painted finish. To avoid this, apply strips of duct tape to the face of the saw table. This will not only preserve the door’s finish, but will make the saw glide more easily as well. That freshly cut edge of the door will absorb moisture and must be sealed to guard against future swelling and warping. If the door is painted, be sure to use an oil base primer on the raw edge and either a latex or oil base finish coat (depending upon the existing finish). If the door is to be stained, use an oil base stain and a coat or two of oil base polyurethane. Finally, reinstall the door by placing it into the opening and installing the top hinge pin first then the remaining hinge pins. Following this process allows you to use the door’s weight to interlock the remaining hinges.

SEPTEMBER 21 - 2013 DELTA BLUES FESTIVAL The Delta region is an area that has a large indigenous population of Blues fans, and as such has earned the right to have a world-class blues festival that is planned and conducted annually. The event is conducted in the historic Rivertown district of Antioch, and is held in the fall of each year. This is planned as a musical oriented event that also combines offerings of crafts and various foods. This family oriented event will also serve as a showcase event for the historic Rivertown district of Antioch. Ultimately, a commemorative music collection from the live performances could be offered as an additional fundraising mechanism.
