Who’s Who... in East County

Rake is a gorgeous new salon in Downtown Brentwood, specializing in custom color and cuts. Owner, Alicia Elliot is no stranger to successful salon ownership, as this is her third venture in salon building. She opened her first salon in Noe Valley (San Francisco) in 1997 and her second in 2002, also in Noe Valley. When she saw the space available in downtown Brentwood, she instantly knew she wanted to turn it into a hair sanctuary.

And, after meeting so many people in Brentwood that travel great distances for hair services, she thought it would be great to give them another option closer to home.

With twenty years experience doing hair, Alicia specializes in custom color and cuts.

The salon carries the Davines line of products for hair care, styling and for color. Alicia says she loves having an hour or two to transform a person. “It’s the best feeling when a client walks out with their head held high, feeling beautiful and confident,” she says.

And she wants everyone to know they don’t have to drive to San Francisco, Pleasanton or Walnut Creek to get the best service and quality cuts and colors they deserve.

Rake Salon is beautiful and modern, with a comfortable vibe. The stylist’s areas are well spaced to provide a one on one experience for clients, yet still open to foster a team environment. Sharing knowledge is very rewarding for Alicia, and because it benefits everyone, she loves working as part of a team. In addition, advanced education for stylists is emphasized and Rake opens it’s doors to traveling educators that share their training and best practices. From this, the stylists learn new techniques, which then benefits the clients.

Alicia has many future plans for Rake Salon, but her immediate goal is to grow the clientele by retaining amazing stylists. Alicia says she’d also love to partner with other businesses to boost the Downtown Brentwood scene.

Well, it’s a beautiful summer day in East County. Off to the west is a clear picture of our famous Mt. Diablo, nestled in the beautiful golden surrounding hills. The end of summer is a perfect time to check in with a local dentist office that brings a perfect smile to everyone’s face.

Hercules Dental Care in Brentwood is located at 3120 Balfour Road in the Safeway Shopping Center. On assignment, I often find it difficult to not reveal my identity, so I just casually popped in and asked a few questions.

I was greeted immediately and was amazed at the services offered by their team of professionals. HPVRelated Oro-Pharyngial Cancer HPV is Human Papilloma Virus and it is the fastest growing sexually transmitted infection.

HPV has accounted for a 225% increase in oro-pharyngial cancers in the past few years. The virus HPV-16 that is responsible for 70 to 80% of all cervical cancers is solely responsible for 85 to 95% of HPV related oro-pharyngial cancers. Data projections quote that the number of oro-pharyngial cancers that are HPV positive will surpass the annual number of cervical cancers by the year 2020.

HPV oro-pharyngial cancer is currently rated the second most common HPV-associated cancer after cervical cancer. Oral cancer can be disfiguring and deadly when diagnosed in its later stages.The risk category for oral HPV

includes anyone over the age of 12 years who is sexually active or who has more than three sex partners. Most people who become infected with HPV are not even aware that they have an infection. At least 50% of sexually active men and women will acquire a genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. Most often, the immune system is strong enough to eradicate the virus from our bodies with minimal or no symptoms.

The global increase in HPV oropharyngial cancer has been connected to oral sex. However, the virus, when in active stage, may be passed on with kissing. The virus may then lay hidden and dormant for several years. The most common sites for HPV related oro-pharyngial cancer are the base of the tongue, the oropharyngeal area, tonsils and tonsillar pillars. There are a number of symptoms that accompany this type of cancer that we should be aware of and it is not limited to the following hoarseness, continuous sore throat, throat infections not responding to antibiotics, pain and difficulty swallowing, non healing oral ulcers

and bleeding in the mouth or throat, ear pain, and a feeling that something is stuck in the throat or a lump in the throat. The location of theses cancers makes it even more difficult to detect them and once it is detected, the gold standard is to get a biopsy done and get treated. Therefore, it is extremely important to get oral cancer screening done during you regular visits to the dentist, because early discovery of abnormal lesions makes a huge impact on better treatment outcomes, improved survival rates, and a better quality of life.

Buying in a Buyer’s Market

Back again are the days where asking for 1-3% in closing costs is appropriate.

Making offers below asking price can be expected as Sellers realize that the competition has heated up and fewer offers are being presented. Homes that have been on the market for more than 30 days are going to be more receptive to offers than newly listed homes.

Buyers will also take this opportunity to ask for items such as Home Warranty plans for problems that may arise later or certain allowances to cover carpets or painting. Where, in the past, certain issues that were uncovered with home inspections were accepted, Buyers may now be a bit more particular about having items fixed or replaced.

A quick peek at the Multiple Listing this week showed almost 640 homes for sale from Bay Point to Discovery Bay. The majority of Sellers are finding that selling a home is taking longer as a result of more competition and fewer Buyers making offers. Homes priced on the low end tend to go quicker to 1st Time Buyers who don’t have to sell a home to buy another, but if you’re priced above $400,000 in East County, your home needs to stand out from the others to avoid excessive days on the market.

Buying in a Buyer’s Market gives leverage that home shoppers didn’t have just a few months ago. Sellers anxiously awaiting an offer give greater weight to offers when they feel the next one could be weeks away or not at all without an aggressive price reduction.

If Sellers don’t price their home ahead of the value drop, the market itself will add age to their listing and force them to make a painful reduction later or withdraw. FAST FIXES FOR FLOOR SQUEAKS

First, a bit of background about why squeaks exist. An old-wives-tale explains that wood sings when it flexes. Not so!

Usually the squeak is a loose nail rubbing inside the hole it was originally driven into. This is because the hole has become larger than it was when the nail created it or because the nail was driven improperly or hit a knot as it was driven and curled out the side of the wood, resulting in a poor connection.

Remember the scene in the movie PSYCHO where Anthony Perkins quietly tiptoed across the bathroom – much to the surprise of an unsuspecting Janet Leigh? Can you do that in your house?

Probably not, if the floor squeaks.

Except for the shriek that results when a fingernail is wiped across the surface of a chalkboard, we can’t think of a more irritating sound than a floor squeak.

You know, you’ve paced that room hundreds of times; the one where the glasses in the cabinets chime and where the furniture wobbles. That special room where the builder left a built-in shrill that announces its presence every time you walk by.

Boy have we got good news for you. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Floor squeaks aren’t difficult or expensive to repair, but without an extra measure of patience, the task can be frustrating. Yes,

Lumber that is used to build a home contains a certain degree of natural moisture. This makes the wood easy to cut and minimizes splitting when it is being nailed together.

Unfortunately, as the wood dries, it shrinks – a natural process that can take years.

When the wood shrinks enough, once tightly seated nails can loosen and rub when the wood flexes below the pitterpatter of foot traffic. Kind of instrument like – move the wood, move the nail and create an irritating sound.

Yes, sometimes wood rubbing wood will also create a shriek, but in either case, the culprit is a bad connection between the sub floor and the floor framing members below it or a bad connection between

one or more of the framing members themselves.

Diagnosis is first. Use a short length of garden hose as a stethoscope. One end to your ear and the other end on the floor while someone else walks across it in an attempt to make it squawk. This can be done from above the floor, but if a basement or sub-area exists working with the makeshift stethoscope from below will lend more accurate results.

Once the culprit nail is located, the next step is to create a better connection.

Don’t use nails to make the repair – use screws. We recommend Grabbers. They have wide grooves that make them easy to drive and they grip like crazy. Drilling a small pilot hole will make the job easier.

If the noisy joint is in a framing member connection below the floor, there shouldn’t be any complications. However, if the problem is a loose sub floor, the repair can get sticky depending upon the type of finish flooring.

GET YOUR GARDEN GROWING DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere.

Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year.

Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects.

Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants.
