School Days I’d like to let students, teachers and parents know about some of the enrichment materials and experiences that my office may be able to assist you with this school year. For the youngest children in Assembly District 11, we can provide coloring books (in English and Spanish) that emphasize lessons in personal safety and fire safety, as well as explain how a bill becomes a law. We also can make available activity books for older students, covering such topics as the environment, state and federal government, and the legislative process. For older students, we have access to materials about California’s history, seal and motto, as well as in-depth information about the state Legislature and the California Constitution. If you are a student who is beginning to think about college – or a parent of

such a student – we can be a resource for information about the CalGrant program and Middle-Class Scholarships. And for students on the cusp of adulthood, we have access to a “Survival Guide for Teenagers” that explains the legal ins and outs of turning 18. My staff and I also welcome the opportunity to meet students by either visiting your school or arranging tours of the State Capitol in Sacramento or of my District Office. We are also happy to present Assembly Certificates of Recognition to students, teachers or parents who are singled out for their achievements or volunteer efforts. Speaking of school, I’m pleased to report that my bill requiring school districts to screen kindergartners through thirdgraders for dyslexia (Assembly Bill 1369) has made it through the Assembly and is now being considered in the state Senate. If it passes, and if the governor agrees, the Superintendent of Public Instruction will have a year to update the state’s guidelines for identifying and dealing with students who are dyslexic. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, dyslexia is a language-based

learning disability. It refers to a cluster of symptoms that result in people having difficulty with specific language skills, such as reading, spelling, writing, and/or pronouncing words. Dyslexia occurs in students of all backgrounds and intellectual levels. People with dyslexia can be very bright. Yet, the inability to read or write as well as other students can leave them feeling “dumb.” They may become so discouraged that they drop of out of school.
