Denture Care If your denture has some miles on it and you have noticed that it doesn’t fit well anymore, it’s time to consider a new denture. A new denture can bring new function and a more youthful appearance too.

The fact is, your mouth is always changing. The bony ridges that support a denture recede due to constant shrinkage, altering your facial appearance and you probably have noticed this as well. Wearing an old worn out denture may cause your chin to approach your nose at as much as 1/16th inch per year!

On top of that, the bite often changes, moving the upper teeth back behind the lower teeth instead of the upper teeth being in front of the lower teeth.

Over time, your facial structure shifts, the cheeks sag a little, new wrinkles appear around the mouth and diagonal lines run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Your facial profile has gradually changed. This transformation is usually

caused by an old denture. We can rework your denture by extending the base to compensate for the shrinkage in the gum tissue and the bony ridges. This moves the front teeth forward to their original position and takes years off your appearance. But if the denture teeth are worn down, then it is probably a good idea to get a new denture.

Life with a denture is not life without dentistry. There are some special oral health concerns even for people who wear dentures; Candida infection is one of the them and the most common.

Candida is a yeast-like fungus present in the mouths of nearly half of all denture wearers. It does not cause much trouble when the denture fits well and when the mouth tissue is healthy and the nutritional needs are satisfied. An ill-fitting denture may cause bad eating habits affecting the oral tissue and interfering with the balanced nutrition to the body, opening the door to Candida invasion. It happens fast; Candida can spread over a denture in just 30 minutes.

Since Candida can permeate the acrylic liner of dentures, chronic infection can occur. The common result is denture stomatitis-red inflamed areas under the denture supporting tissues. This

will discourage wearing the denture at all. To prevent the infection, keep the dentures clean and remove the dentures at night. Best of all, have us evaluate the denture for fit.

Even if your present dentures are in perfect condition, changes in the mouth and the bone supporting the denture are constantly taking place. You cannot expect dentures to last more than 5 to 10 years and still give you a natural look, but by replacing dentures as your mouth changes you will enjoy renewed function and a youthful appearance to your face. But remember, your oral health will always need attention, denture or no denture.

Protect Your Home Against Weather Disasters It may still seem like spring but fall and winter are just around the corner and who knows what havoc Mother Nature may wreak tomorrow.

Water, wind, fire and earth movement can be hazardous to your home. But, there are actions you can take now to protect your property and prevent major damage should one of these elements strike. Depending on the age of your home and the building codes in your area, some of these improvements may already be in place.

Water - Apart from major flooding, most damage occurs when water seeps in through cracks and leaks. Make sure that windows and doors are well sealed. Seal any cracks and holes in the foundation and exterior walls. Repair or replace roof shingles around any area that allows water to penetrate the roof sheathing. Check for holes or air leaks in the attic and basement. Install or make sure that the flashing, a thin metal strip, around the doors, windows, thresholds, chimney and roof are in tact.

Wind - Minimize the damage by keeping the wind from getting inside your home.

Wildfire - Some inexpensive home improvements that you can make include installing a spark arrestor on your chimney, eliminating brush and debris from around your property. More expensive improvements include replacing single-pane glass windows, doors or skylights with tempered glass, recovering your exterior walls with a more fire-resistant material, and re-roofing your home with a Class A roof covering.

Earthquake - Steps you can take to protect your property and possessions include anchoring appliances, water heater, dressers, and other heavy items to the wall. You can finds kits at the hardware store. Secure ceiling lights, chandeliers and other hanging items to the permanent structure of your home. It is also a good idea to install a main gas shut-off device.

Of course, there may be times, when no amount of prepping can protect your home.

However, homeowner’s insurance can help protect you financially in case something happens to your property or its contents.

Most standard homeowner’s insurance policies include structural coverage and personal property coverage. Depending on your location, you may also need additional coverage against earthquake, hurricane, flood and fire. If you are renting, look into renter’s insurance; it can be surprisingly affordable.

Remember the owner’s policy does not cover your personal property.

Periodically review your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure that you are adequately covered to rebuild your home and replace your contents. If there is ever damage to your personal property, having a home inventory can make it easier when filing an insurance claim. Go around the house and list every item in every room. Don’t forget the attic, basement or other storage places. In addition, take photos or video of each room for visual documentation. It is also a good idea to arrange valuable collections, silver, jewelry, etc. and take close up photos.

It is important to have an emergency evacuation plan and designated meeting area to take ahead count in case of fire or other emergency. When weather-related disasters strike, what’s most important is your safety and that of your family. However, by taking precautions to protect your home, you can possibly help keep damage to a minimum; or in the case of severe damage, make sure that you have the financial means to rebuild. Restoring Concrete Patio Dividers If your concrete patio is in good condition except for gray, tattered and splintering wood dividers then wood replacement may be in order. This is a repair that is relatively inexpensive, and although somewhat timeconsuming, fairly easy.

If you were present when your patio was being poured, you may have noticed that there were evenly spaced rows of nails partially driven into both sides of the wood dividers. The nails are used to “key” into the concrete to hold the dividers in place. Don’t worry about the nails though.

Once a divider has rotted enough to need replacement the nails are probably rusted and rotted away as well.

During divider replacement the nail keying technique cannot be used. You might assume that once you have removed the old wood from the concrete there won’t be anything to hold the new wood in place.

Not so. The new wood strips are held by the irregular shape of the recess in the concrete. Wood divider replacement is

rather easy. You’ll need a hammer, a wood chisel and a hand saw, maybe a pair of side-cutters, a small vacuum and an electric sander or an electric planer or a small table saw (these can be rented) and a small block of soft scrap wood about 12 inches long.

First, use the hammer and chisel to remove the wood strips. No special technique is required. Just get the wood out as best you can. Be careful not to dull the chisel by driving the sharpened end into the concrete. You might consider using knee pads for comfort. Oh, and don’t forget eye protection.

Once the wood is removed, use the side-cutters to shorten any nails that may remain in the concrete. Don’t cut them completely away. Leave about one-quarter inch of the nail sticking out of the concrete. Again, if the wood is rotten enough to need replacement there probably won’t be any nails. Next, vacuum the cavity removing scraps of wood, concrete and small debris.

Use the electric sander to mill the replacement dividers so that they are approximately one-sixteenth to three thirty-seconds of an inch wider than the average width of the divider cavity. Cut the wood to length, and starting at one end begin driving the strip into the crevice using a wood block between the divider strip and the hammer. We don’t want

hammer marks on our brand new divider strip, now do we!

Simple physics holds it all in place. As the wood is driven into the concrete cavity the sides of the strip adjacent to the concrete are torn upward. Between the compression created by installing a slightly oversized piece of wood and the upward angle of the torn sides of the wood you’ll have a tight fit.

Clear, dry redwood should be used.

Not just clear, but clear and dry. If green wood is used (green referring to moisture content, not color) it will shrink as it dries out and in very short order, two to three months, it will be loose and in need of replacement.

To make sure the wood dividers will last as long as possible, be sure to rub a couple of coats of clear wood preservative onto all six sides of every strip. Once in place the dividers will be fully protected. Every year or two, pour oil onto the divider strip and let it trickle down the sides and ends. Wipe off the excess to prevent a sticky mess. Follow this process and your new replacement dividers will outlast the originals.
