WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?
new, sometimes in one day! How about that for a miracle? The best part is you can save thousands of dollars, almost 10 times less than the cost of new cabinets. Another great deal is, your consultation is free. Now, I usually don’t ask our readers to quit reading our snoop, but, at least take the time to find the ad in our magazine and give them a call for your free consultation so you can get your kitchen beautiful for the up and coming holiday season, then come back and finish this story while you wait for them to come visit.
Restoration in a Day! Here it is, the first of October. Yesterday brought the most incredible rain downpour and got everyone in the city to come outside to see what all the noise was. What a wonderful bath it gave us, leaving the trees and shrubs glistening and reaching for the sky as if to say thank you God for this wonderful gift. Now is a great time to check in on a local business who can bring a similar restoration to your home. Kitchen Makeovers, Inc. is a family owned and operated company specializing in cabinet restorations, wood, renewal, cabinet refinishing, kitchen cleaning and restoration, cabinet refacing, kitchen remodeling, kitchen and door replacement. Now, I have your attention! I personally had heard of restoring cabinets, but really thought it was just a quick fix and a scam. Well, much to my surprise, I was dead wrong. These guys can bring your kitchen back to
First they start by masking and covering appliances, countertops & floors. Plastic sheeting is put up around your kitchen. Next, they clean the cabinets with a solvent-based cleaner to get off any buildup (grime or grease) or lacquer finish that may be flaking off. This is an important part of the process. The cabinets must be perfectly clean before they can repair the color and finish. Kitchen cabinets can become very dirty just by everyday use: grease particles become airborne when cooking, spills and splashes or touching and grabbing cabinet doors and drawer fronts. You know what I am talking about, that one spot that stares at you every day that you have tried a hundred ways to clean and cover. Once the cabinets are cleaned properly,
matching stain color is then applied to the damaged areas, evening out the color. Finish that has been worn off to the bare wood should be repaired immediately to avoid letting oil get into the wood, making the color repair more difficult. The last step is to seal the cabinets. This is done with three coats of finish (gloss, semi-gloss or matt ) so your cabinets are sealed and protected. That’s it, time for company! Now here is more good news: They don’t start another job until your project is completed. They are knowledgeable and friendly and have solutions for any budget. These professional skilled craftsmen have a long list of satisfied customers on their website at cabinetrestorations.com so please take the time to check them out. So, JoAnn, owner of Kitchen Makeovers, you have enlightened this Snoop and allowed me to add your name to my checklist of things to do for my home. The Monthly Grapevine gives you 10 shiny handles for giving homeowners a wonderful option to restore their kitchens. Who will be snooped next? It could be you!
Kitchen Makeovers, Inc. is located at 2145 Elkins Way, H. in Brentwood. They can be contacted at 925-240-5002 or cabinentrestorations.com

TRAVEL TIME Honeymoons too often take a backseat to the arrangements and plans of the actual wedding, but you owe it to yourself to give honeymoon planning greater and more careful attention. Honeymooners have endless options; whether a beach vacation, a safari, or a ski trip, the honeymoon should reflect your joint personality and wishes. Your honeymoon can be the most romantic trip you’ll ever take, and it can also be a lot of fun. Look for a destination that offers everything you want. Hawaii remains the number one destination for honeymoons year after year because of its romantic sunsets, magnificent beaches, and luxurious hotels. Visitors to Hawaii can also conveniently hop from island to island to experience just about any climate and adventure under the sun, including kayaking, mountain climbing, surfing, scuba, and even hiking in a rainforest. Mexico - From the Yucatan peninsula to the Pacific Coast, Mexico is all at once
romantic, adventurous, and laidback. A collection of spectacular land and seascapes, larger than almost anywhere else in the world, reasonably priced attractions and an easy-to-reach location make a Mexico vacation hard to beat. Honeymooners can enjoy a wide variety of activities, including eco-tourism, water sports, horseback riding, diving, and touring ancient Mexican ruins.
take advantage of the unparalleled views.
The Caribbean - The islands of the Caribbean have long been favorites for honeymooners. Included in the Caribbean are the islands of Jamaica, The Bahamas and Aruba among others. And, if you don’t want to use a passport you can always go to the US Virgin Islands as well as Puerto Rico. Most Caribbean islands have all inclusive resorts to choose from.
GETAWAY FROM YOUR EVERDAY and let us assist you with your honeymoon.
Tahiti and the South Pacific - These islands are becoming an increasingly popular destination for couples (including celebrities) seeking an exclusive honeymoon experience and are the closest to a private island retreat. The sheer beauty and history of the land and the people allows couples to participate in awe-inspiring eco-tourism and cultural activities. Many also opt to stay in traditional style burés or bungalows, some of which are directly over the water, to
Australia and New Zealand - If you’re looking for outdoor adventure both above and below the ocean bed, you’ll love the exceptional beauty of these lands. From snorkeling and scuba diving to bush treks and mountain climbing, honeymooners won’t find any more high-energy activities than these locations offer.
You can plan rates for both accommodation and air approximately 11 months ahead of time so now is the time to plan your 2016 honeymoon with us here at Getaway.

HEALTH
FOR YOUR DENTAL HEALTH
Root Caries in Older Adults Older adults are retaining an increasing number of natural teeth and nearly half of all individuals aged 75 and older have experienced root caries or decay. Root caries is a major cause of tooth loss in older adults. Several of the clinical, social and behavioral changes common to aging, predispose older adults to the highest rates of teeth decay. The need for improved preventive efforts and treatment strategies for this population is acute. The prevalence of untreated root caries is 12% for adults aged 65-74 and 17% for those aged 74 and older. Lower educational attainment is also strongly associated with increased oral health problems at all ages and across all races. Chronic systemic disease such as diabetes and decreasing dexterity makes personal oral hygiene more difficult particularly for the oldest and most frail individuals. The
pain of arthritis and neuropathies make it difficult to grasp or manipulate a manual toothbrush. Patients with dementia experience a higher prevalence of caries than those without dementia depending on the dementia type and severity. Another risk factor is taking multiple medications. More than 500 medications have the potential to decrease salivary flow which leads to dry mouth and subsequently dental caries. Other factors are smoking and alcohol consumption. Good oral hygiene is also compromised by existing dental restorations and dentures because of food accumulating around them. The dietary shift from complex to simple sugars promotes cavities because of bacteria breaking down these sugars to acids which dissolve the mineral content of enamel and dentin. With age, the saliva becomes thicker and results in less lubrication. The medications most of the older population are taking add to the dryness in the mouth causing more cavities in the root. Treating root cavities can be challenging. The location of the cavity on the root may be difficult to access as it may be deep under the gum line or even close to the nerve. Sometimes patients do not realize the cavities in the root until they are in pain or the tooth breaks

off at the gum line. The importance of topical application of fluoride cannot be understated. Fluoride inhibits plaque bacterial growth, but most of all, fluoride inhibits demineralization and helps with remineralization of the tooth surface. Topical application of fluoride can be done in the dental office and also at home by using prescription fluoride toothpaste or gel, because brushing alone does not overcome the high bacterial challenge along with the dryness of mouth.

ASSEMBLYMEMBER JIM FRAIZER
of Justice for making public the “Open Justice” Web portal that tracks statewide arrests, the number of law enforcement officers killed or assaulted in the line of duty, and in-custody deaths, including officer-involved shootings. As we all know, even the best departments can have a bad apple.
Public safety: It’s all about respect With the regular Legislative session in Sacramento finally at a close, you will likely see me out and about in Assembly District 11 more. Thank goodness I get to come home from Sacramento and be with the people who make things happen in our communities. That would be you! I especially enjoy hanging out with some of my favorite people: police officers and firefighters. It has been my privilege to ride along with every police and fire department in the 11th Assembly District. I am proud of the work done by our public safety servants. Police nationwide have been criticized recently for the way some officers interact with the public. I recognize there is room for improvement: I supported AB 953, which would require California police agencies to track racial profiling, and I applauded the California Department
It has been my experience, however, that officers and firefighters are mostly good people doing their jobs to the best of their abilities and trying to get home to their families in one piece. Sadly, not all of them achieve that goal. Just this summer, Hayward Police Sgt. Scott Lunger, a Brentwood resident, was fatally shot after pulling over an erratic driver. It isn’t easy dealing with people in what are often the worst moments of their lives. Yet our finest police officers and firefighters do just that. They are first on the scene of horrific accidents. They chase after bad guys instead of running away from them. They rush into burning buildings when logic says to get out. In recent years, police officers and firefighters throughout California have done their jobs while helping their communities hold the financial line during the Great Recession. This willingness to
put their communities first also makes them heroes in my book. But praising them isn’t enough. We need to do our part, and October offers us chances to learn how. During Fire Prevention Week and Crime Prevention Month, agencies throughout East Contra Costa County will be hosting special events and giving away materials that describe simple steps everyone can take to make their homes and businesses safer. When you come across such an event, I encourage you to stop by, meet some of the folks who protect us, and pick up those brochures. More important, read them and follow the advice.
Assemblymember Frazier represents the 11th Assembly District in the Californian State Assembly, including Brentwood, Discovery Bay, Byron, Knightsen, Bethel Island, Antioch, Oakley, a portion of Pittsburg and half of Solano County. He may be reached by phone at 925-5130411; by mail at 150 City Park Way, Brentwood, 94513; or online at www. assembly.ca.gov/frazier.

ON THE HOUSE
Wiring A Light Switch Thomas Alva Edison patented the electric light bulb in 1879. To say that this innovation had a profoundly positive affect on society would be a gross understatement. Although electric lighting is standard equipment for most Americans, there are still parts of the world where it is considered a luxury. On a recent trip to Southern India we discovered that while most homes in this Asian subcontinent have electricity, often the sum total of a residential electrical service could consist simply of one outlet and one light fixture. Ceiling-mounted paddle fans used to move the sultry Indian air are as prominent in dwellings in that part of the world as doorbells are in America. We returned home with a renewed sense of appreciation for the standard of living that we enjoy in this country. One interesting observation that we made regarding light fixtures and fans is that they are, for the most part, controlled by a pull string instead of a wall switch. This would only figure since a wall switch requires more electrical work and is, therefore, considered a luxury and not a necessity. Interestingly, one doesn’t need to travel to a third world country to find light fixtures and fans controlled by a pull string. Although this configuration is now the exception, there was a time in this country where such was not the case. Thus, as we seek to improve comfort and convenience, adding a switch to a pull string fixture has become an increasingly popular project. Is this a project that you should attempt? If you have successfully performed electrical work in your home previously and feel
confident working with electricity, then this is a project you might want to tackle. On the other hand, if you are all thumbs and have difficulty using a plumber’s helper, then we suggest that you enlist the services of a qualified electrician. In either case, check with your local building department to determine if an electrical permit and inspection are required. One of the interesting things about a light fixture is that the power or “hot lead” can originate at the fixture or the switch. We learned this the hard way years and years ago when, as youngsters, we attempted to change a light fixture without turning off the power at the breaker box. In our naiveté we thought that because the switch was off, there was no power at the light fixture. Boy were we WRONG! You can be sure that we didn’t make that same mistake twice. Thus, before attempting this project, be certain to turn off the breaker or remove the fuse that controls the fixture. With the power safely off, use a screwdriver to remove the screws that fasten the fixture to the mounting box and disconnect the black wire (hot wire) and the white (neutral) wire from the fixture. The most difficult part of this project is running new wire from the existing fixture location to the new switch location. This may necessitate working in the attic or crawl space, drilling holes and removing small sections of wallboard or plaster at the ceiling and/or walls. When it comes to wire, use 12-gauge NM (nonmetallic-sheathed) two-wire cable with a ground. NM cable is standard house cable used in dry locations. Two-wire cable contains two conductors (hot and neutral) plus grounding wire, all wrapped in paper and sheathed in plastic. Attach the wire to the framing using the approved staples or straps. The cable should be anchored 12 inches from each box and at least every four feet along the run. The new switch should be located approximately 48 above the floor. Use
SALVADOR LANDSCAPING Affordable Prices Your Wallet Will Love
a “cut in” switch box which can be retrofit into a corresponding opening in the wallboard or plaster. The new wire between the switch box and the fixture will be used to create a “switch loop.” Thus, the circuit will be closed at the new switch location rather than at the existing switch located within the fixture. To accomplish this, connect the black wire to the black wire at the fixture. Connect the other end of the black wire to one of the two terminals on a single-pole switch. Next, wrap the ends of the white wire with black electrical tape for easy identification. Connect one end of this wire to the remaining terminal on the switch and connect the other end to the black (hot) wire that enters the mounting box. Connect the bare copper ground wire to metal boxes or tie them to one another when using non-metallic boxes. Use properly sized wire nuts to make the wire connections. Fasten the new switch to the switch box and complete the switch installation with a trim plate. If the existing pull-string fixture is to be reinstalled, reinstall the mounting screws previously removed and be certain to leave the pull-string in the “on” position. Since a pull-string fixture is no longer needed, this would be an opportune time to install the new decorative fixture that you have been dreaming of. If you really want to go “hightech” and get fancy, install a dimmer in lieu of the standard single-pole toggle switch. Once all connections have been made and the switch and fixture are securely in place, turn on the power and test your handiwork. Chances are good that you’ll end up with a grin. Thomas Edison would be proud.

PLAYING IT SAFE ON HALLOWEEN • Make sure older kids go out with friends. • Younger children should be accompanied by an adult. If you live in a rural area, offer all kids a ride in the car. • Set a time limit for children to trick-or-treat. Together, map out a safe route so you know where they’ll be. • Remind them not to take shortcuts through backyards, alleys, or playing fields and do not to enter a strange house or car. • Trick-or-treat while it is still light out. • Hold a Halloween party at home, with neighbors, a local church or non-profit.

LAW OFFICE OF MICHAEL PRIMUS
If a person has filed a chapter 7 and received a discharge (debts forgiven) then section 727(a)(8) of the Bankruptcy Code provides that another chapter 7 within 8 years will not forgive debts. In other words, you must wait at least 8 years from the date you filed the first chapter 7 before filing a new chapter 7.
Can I File Bankruptcy Again? Many people assume they can only file bankruptcy once in their lives, other people assume they need to wait until their bankruptcy comes off their credit report before they can file again. The truth is the bankruptcy laws are more flexible than most people think. This article is limited to cases where debts were forgiven in a past bankruptcy. This article does not address dismissal. Dismissal means your debts were reinstated usually due to failure to submit paperwork or failure to attend court. Most bankruptcy cases are filed as either chapter 7 which is sometimes called complete bankruptcy or chapter 13 which is sometimes called reorganization. The type of prior bankruptcy will establish the time you need to wait before filing a new case. Chapter 7 After a Chapter 7
Chapter 13 After Chapter 7 If a person has filed a chapter 7 and received a discharge (debts forgiven) then section 1328(f) of the Bankruptcy Code provides that a chapter 13 filed within 4 years of the chapter 7 will not forgive debts.
Chapter 7 After Chapter 13 If a person has completed a chapter 13 and received a discharge then section 727(a)(9) provides that a chapter 7 filed within 6 years of the filing of chapter 13 will not forgive debts. Chapter 13 After Chapter 13 If a person has filed and completed a chapter 13, section 1328(f) of the Bankruptcy Code provides a chapter 13 filed within 2 years of the filing of the prior case will not forgive debts. However, if the original chapter 13 was dismissed (did not complete plan, debts reinstated) then a person can file another chapter 13 almost immediately but must get a court order pursuant to Bankruptcy Code section 362(c)(3) to be protected from creditors. This type of court order generally requires a brief explanation of why the first case failed.

BUSINESS
Book Busters Bookkeeping Service, Inc. Quick as a wink, fall is officially here and the final quarter of 2015 is upon us. At this time of year, many proprietors begin to worry about the accuracy and completeness of their financial records. They become fretful about possible problems at tax time. If this describes your situation, now is the ideal time to take charge and make accounting emergencies a thing of the past. Book Busters Bookkeeping Service (BBBS) in Brentwood can show you how to streamline your bookkeeping processes for improved efficiency, stress-free tax reporting, and overall peace of mind. BBBS was established over 25 years ago and is currently owned and operated by Darci Posch. She has enabled many small and medium-sized businesses to better understand their finances. Accurate and timely reporting provides a form of measurement that allows managers to make better decisions for improved outcomes. Darci and her staff have helped businesses throughout the Bay Area establish and maintain healthy books, taking the mystery out of bookkeeping and allowing managers to focus on what they do best with greater confidence and better financial results. A wide variety of both profit and nonprofit organizations have benefited from
the expertise of BBBS. They provide support to businesses in the construction and contracting industry as well as to professionals and service industries such as attorneys, accountants, retailers, veterinarians, and property managers. Unlike many bookkeeping consultants, BBBS has an established office and can be easily reached when needed. A full-charge bookkeeping service, the firm offers in-house and on-site bookkeeping. As QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisors, they can set up your accounting system and teach you and your staff how to effectively use it. The arduous task of cleaning up and reconstructing prior-year books can also be handled for you to insure a smooth and painless audit process. The owner takes responsibility for training new clients and works on-site to get each one established with the system of their choice. Whether the goal is to go paperless and move to a cloud-based system, set up file sharing, or enable remote access, Book Busters Bookkeeping Service can help. BBBS offers support with payroll processing and associated reporting such as quarterly reports, year-end W-2s, and 1099s. They assist with tax reporting, sales tax returns, financial statement preparation, and reconciliation reports. The BBBS team provides general consultation to develop your bookkeeping strategies, paperwork, and workflow configuration. They arrange personal file system setups, bill paying systems, yearend organization, and pre-tax preparation. They can also assist with transactional
bookkeeping such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank, and credit card reconciliations. Under their wing, your organization can become proficient in QuickBooks, strengthening your business and empowering you to save precious time and money. Every customer is important, and the owner oversees all jobs that enter and exit the BBBS office to provide a secondary review. This assures that all information is accurate and the work is done in a consistent manner. Darci believes that this system manages the potential for errors and gives the chance to assess any questions before the financial statements are delivered. The bookkeeping monster can be tamed easily and seamlessly with Book Busters Bookkeeping Service by your side. Call today to discuss what they can do for your establishment. They are ready, willing, and able to tailor your support services to what works best for your business.
Book Busters Bookkeeping is located at 2145 Elkins Way, Suit D in Brentwood they can be reached at 925-634-8682 or www.darci@bookbusters.net

RESCUE MOMENT
to participate in.
With October upon us you can almost bet the local shelters and rescue organizations will be participating in some kind of Halloween event near you. Through the year most organizations try and help the needy, the abandon, and the abused/neglected with food, shelter, and medical costs. Talking of our furry friends of course! Sometimes costs arise well beyond what they have acquired and they usually have to reach deep within their own pockets to help even things out, so not one creature misses out on the possibility of a better way of life. Without donations and materialistic items, shelters and rescue groups could not operate to such an extreme as they do, if it would not be for those of you that help with your taxable donations. October is such a fun month in Contra Costa County. Rescue or Non profit organizations are planning such Halloween events that all ages will want
