The Big Green Egg is Here! Here it is, a few days before the official start of Fall, and the rain came down so hard yesterday, you couldn’t see across town and the street drains were ﬂowing like crazy. The only signs of farming in the ag core are the tractors seen off in the distant fields that have been put to bed for winter. Soon social media and our televisions have been slamming us with “Pre Black Friday” specials, the local retailers have lines waiting to pay for their purchases. Lucky for me, I am off on assignment to a new place in town that everyone is talking about. Since I am a fan of Buffalo Wild Wings, this was a snap to find. Brentwood Outdoor Living is located right behind the restaurant and can be seen as you enter the parking lot from the beautiful window displays and the Big Green Egg on the sidewalk. Not a real egg, just the most popular way to cook outdoors in years. I actually couldn’t wait to go inside because the owner, Kevin King, is a long time friend to not only me, but the community. After retiring from the Brentwood PD in 2008, he followed

Nice choice for a name, Kevin! This huge showroom is like going to the annual home show. It is filled with areas of furniture that look like Sunset magazine, all the way down to coasters for your drinks. I think I liked this the most because you don’t have to think about matching colors, layout of the furniture or how it is going to feel when you sit on those amazing cushions. And the neat part is, the area right next to it is an outdoor kitchen fit for a chef. And next to that, the spa you have listed on your bucket list. These upscale, premium products include kitchens, swim spas, patio furniture, grills, umbrellas, hammocks, swings and those incredible fire tables. Brands include Hotspring Spas, Louisiana, Alfresco, Artisan, Twin Eagles grills and The Big Green Egg. And the best part, the staff knows all about each product and is more than gracious to either help you or just allow you to wander. Ten extra points! Now the umbrellas. For those of you, which I am pretty sure is most of you since we get into the 100 plus degrees here in East

County, who have an umbrella in their back yard, you know what a pain it is to find the right color and quality material, let alone dig through a box to find it. Brentwood Outdoor Living has them lined up around up all along the wall and opened up in the store to get the whole experience. They also have every product you need to maintain and use your spa, pool and kitchen. And these guys are so knowledgeable, they can tell you what the “thingamagiggie” is and can order it for you if they don’t have it in stock. Another ten points! Being a secret shopper is so much fun, but to tell you the truth folks, I really enjoy it when I know the owner, although they can’t know who I am, and I can witness first hand their passion for bringing their dream to life. This is so true about Kevin. He is personable, kind, very meticulous and truly cares about his community, quality products and good customer service. Stroke And Dental Health Stroke is caused by the interruption of the blood supply to the brain. A blood vessel bursts or is blocked by a blood clot which in turn cuts off the oxygen supply and nutrients to the brain causing damage to the brain tissue. Symptoms and signs of stroke depend on the location and extent of the tissue damage. Stroke is the second leading cause of death in people sixty years or older in industrialized countries. About 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke every year. Infections are known to be a risk factor for stroke. Upper respiratory tract infections have been known for a long time to increase the risk of stroke. Chronic infections such as bronchitis and chlamydia also pose risk for stroke. More recently dental infections have been added to the concerns. Any infection causes the release of inﬂammatory mediators which can have detrimental

effects in the body.For example the inflammatory mediators can activate the blood coagulation system causing blood clots. Small particles of the clot can get in the blood vessels in the brain causing stroke. However the inflammatory reaction is highly complex. Many factors such as genetics, diet, obesity and behavioral factors such as smoking and drinking modify the inflammatory reaction. According to recent studies maintaining good oral health diminishes the risk for cardiovascular events including stroke. There has been evidence where studies show an association particularly between poor periodontal health and stroke. Bacteria which can cause gum disease have been detected in the plaque lining the blood vessels leading to increased stroke risk. Treatment of gum disease seems to improve the lining for the blood vessels. Maintaining oral health helps in the general health of the blood vessels in the body. Maintaining satisfactory oral hygiene among patients who have survived stroke can be challenging because often times their manual dexterity is reduced after having a stroke. The homestead laws are part of a broader set of laws called exemptions. In addition to the homestead, the exemption laws protect household goods, furniture, vehicles, retirement and much more. The homestead is the largest exemption and protects the most important asset, your home. As good as that sounds, the homestead has conditions and limitations. Your Home – The homestead only applies to real estate you own and live in. You do not need to be the only owner to claim the homestead. Similarly, it is not a problem if you rent part of the house to someone else. The idea is to protect the roof over your head. Value Limitation – The homestead protects realizable equity of up to $75,000 if you are single and under age 65; up to $100,000 if you are married or

have a dependent; and up to $175,000 for people age 65 or over, disabled people, or certain low-income individuals over the age of 55. Realizable equity is the amount of money you would receive if the house was sold, meaning after payment of real estate commissions and all mortgages. No Foreclosure Protection – The homestead does not protect your home from foreclosure by a mortgage lender. This means if your mortgage payments are delinquent and the lender is threatening to foreclose, the homestead laws will not help you. No Protection from IRS liens – The homestead does not protect against federal tax liens. This means tax liens can be recorded and enforced despite the homestead. Fortunately, the IRS almost never attempts to sell a person’s home to satisfy an unpaid tax debt, even huge tax debts. The homestead in bankruptcy – The homestead is most powerful in the context of chapter 7 bankruptcy. The homestead laws protect your home from being sold to satisfy debts like credit cards, payday loans and medical bills. The homestead, in conjunction with the bankruptcy laws, can even

remove judgment liens from the title to your home. The homestead also offers protection in chapter 13 bankruptcy. The homestead outside of bankruptcy – If a non-mortgage creditor (credit card, payday loan, medical bill) obtains a judgment against you, and attempts to sell your home to satisfy the judgment you are entitled to assert the homestead as a defense. How Do You Define Success?

Success is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame. But, thank goodness, today that definition has transitioned within our society into more than just the state of our bank accounts and/or how others perceive us. Our society has made many unfortunate changes throughout the years but I truly believe that this is something that we as Americans can be proud of. I believe success is defined by who you are when no one is looking; one who has a superior work ethic, a strong faith and a great desire to serve and lead others down the same path. We need to ask ourselves questions in order to evaluate whether we have reached a stature of successfulness, but also realize that there is no limit to the range in which that can truly be measured. Do you see success as how others perceive you or is it more of a personal view of yourself? Is success really attainable or is it something that one will continuously spend their lives trying to achieve, and is that striving what makes you more successful than others? All these questions will help you formulate how you see success for yourself and if you are on the correct

path to achieving that state. The other thing we must remember is that what we believe success looks like might actually be smok and mirrors. Think of all the famous and wealthy people that on the outside look like they have it all together but then we find out that they are completely broken and miserable on the inside, would you still look at them as a definition of someone successful or not? Wouldn’t you rather be completely without financial means but live in a state of complete joy and feel spiritually complete and whole? Jesus defined success as one who puts others and God above himself with no desire to have personal recognition and reward for serving with great love. Why is it that when we help others or are able to give to others we feel blessed? Maybe success is knowing that you have made a difference and maybe even leaving behind a legacy that others can follow. New Ways to Measure Success. • Character in solitude. Those who display character in the dark will always reflect it in the light. • Contentment in circumstance. Rich is the man or woman who can find contentment in any circumstance. • Courage during adversity. Courage can only be revealed when it is required. • Faithfulness in commitment. Those whose words are true. • Generosity in abundance. • Gratitude despite circumstance.

• Humility in accomplishment. Those who are quick to deflect praise in accomplishment ought to be first in receiving it. • Integrity in the details. Those who show integrity in the little things of life will typically display it in the bigger things as well. • Kindness to the weak. Our true measure of kindness is shown in how we treat those who will never repay us. • Love for enemies. It takes a special type of person to extend love towards those who treat us unjustly. • Perseverance in failure. We will all at some point face failure. Success are those who get back up and try again. • Respect for authority. • Responsibility for mistake. Only those who can admit their mistakes have the opportunity to learn from them. The ultimate question we need to ask ourselves on a daily basis is: have you defined goals and action items in order to be successful and if you don’t believe that you are successful or on the road to success what can you do today to change that?
