Stress is a part of daily life, even more so during the holidays with the shopping, entertaining and out-of-town guests. As stress increases, people are more likely to give up enjoyable activities that help keep stress at bay.

Here are some helpful tips you can use to get a jump-start on managing your stress before the holidays and the family arrives.

Self-Care is Mandatory - When the madness starts, the shopping needs to be done, the car needs servicing and the house needs to be cleaned, it’s easy to put your needs at the bottom of your to-do list. But by making rest and relaxation a priority, you give yourself time to revitalize and teach your kids valuable lessons in self-care and selfesteem.

Self-care can include different activities, from yoga and brisk walking to spiritual pursuits, like journaling, meditation or affirmations. It also includes getting enough sleep nightly, as most adults need a minimum of seven hours. It’s also important to find ways to let go of past hurts.

Eat Well - A healthy diet is critical to immune and neurological functions, which in turn, help manage stress. Brainhealthy foods include nuts, fish, bananas and eggs, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates like brown rice and sweet potatoes are also beneficial.

Tongue Cleaning The concept of tongue cleaning is not a new practice.

Tongue cleaning has been practiced among wealthy and elite people in various parts of the world for centuries and there are elaborate and ornamental tongue cleaners (scrapers) that have been found dating back to centuries.

One of the most important reasons for tongue cleaning every day is to prevent bad breath. We tend to back away from people who have bad breath while speaking and breathing.

Bad breath could be from various causes but one of the reasons is because the tongue has taste buds and deep crevices that act like a carpet where bacteria and plaque can accumulate in large quantities.

It has been estimated by a number of studies that about 90% of the bad

breath or halitosis comes from the mouth and about 80% comes from the tongue debris. Some kinds of food like garlic or onions can be smelly and can leave a lingering taste in the mouth which can be greatly reduced by cleaning the tongue after eating such foods. When you use a tongue cleaner to scrape the tongue after eating chocolate or other highly pigmented foods, you will be amazed to see how much color comes off the tongue.

You will have to scrape the tongue several times before all the pigment is removed and you will be surprised to see how much debris remains. If you do not clean the tongue, the debris remains for several hours after eating, putrefies and causes bad breath.

Therefore tongue cleaning should be a routine oral hygiene habit just as necessary as using deodorant or taking a shower.

As a dental professional, my main concern is to prevent patients from dental caries and periodontal disease, which are both infectious and depend on the presence of bacteria. These diseases also cause potential systemic complications like diabetes, heart

disease and stroke. The tongue provides a major source of bacteria for these local diseases and may cause systemic effects. Some people use a standard toothbrush to clean their tongue, but a better choice is to get a tongue cleaner. Children should be encouraged to clean their tongue and starting at an early age makes it a routine part of oral hygiene. If you need help to know how to use a tongue cleaner ask the dentist during your next visit because tongue cleaning also gives a psychological advantage when you feel your mouth is clean and the odor is gone.

Playing a Tune While the actual origins of the stringed instrument known as the harp are unknown and always up for debate, one thing is certain; in the right hands the harp can make beautiful music.

On the other side of the string, to the un-trained ear, the worst harpist’s tune can sound like a magic melody. The same logic can be used when applying for the federal government’s recently updated Home Affordable Refinance Program, otherwise referred to as H.A.R.P – you can’t benefit from what you don’t know.

Put in place to allow homeowners that are current on their mortgage, but behind on their equity, to refinance without penalty or mortgage insurance, H.A.R.P has been extended through December 31, 2013!

The federal government recognized – summed up by the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s acting director, Edward J. DeMarco, “we know that there are many homeowners who are eligible under HARP and those are the borrowers we

want to reach” – that MANY credit worthy homeowners are “underwater,” swallowed by negative equity, and by no fault of their own not able to take advantage of current market rates. And when I say market rates, a recently completed national survey showed that nearly 40% of all Americans in 30-year fixed loans still have rates over 6%...more than a two full percentage points over the national average 30-year fixed rate.

So, if you find yourself without any equity but current on your mortgage payment, you are an ideal candidate for the Home Affordable Refinance Program. With the new changes put in place - set to become finalized sometime in November - “underwater” homeowners would be allowed to potentially refinance their home to the current market rates…regardless of them being “underwater.” There would be no cap to the negative equity you had and no appraisal would be required.

This program has been put in place to help those borrowers who have helped themselves; in the words of President Obama, “to provide access to low-cost refinancing for responsible homeowners suffering from falling home prices.”

These are the three questions many of us are asking in the current economy.

The answer however is a very individual decision. Which choice is best for you depends on a variety of factors including your long term goals, the amount you are “upside down” in comparison to loan amount and market value.

Many more lenders are now offering modifications to homeowners in distress.

These are generally what I consider more of a temporary solution as the banks seldom offer principal reductions. Usually the bank will offer to lower you payment over a fixed period of time. The problem with these terms is that without a principle reduction you are not building equity.

In today’s market where a home’s value may be upside down or have a negative equity of over 70%, current appreciation projections show it would take years just to break even on the balance of the loan. This makes your situation like a long term lease.

Foreclosure or simply walking away from the home is another option. There are, of course, pros and cons to this approach. The legal repercussions can vary depending on each individual’s situation. California is a non-recourse state and has what is called a one action rule, which basically states that if your homes is foreclosed and sold by the trustee, that is the only recourse for the lender. Which means, generally speaking, you can walk away with little or no legal consequence.

These rules can apply to primary homes and second or investment property. I would definitely advise anyone seeking foreclosure to seek legal advice for their individual scenarios.

Because a short sale is perceived as a proactive choice by the borrower, the credit compiling agencies tend to score it higher than a foreclosure or a deed-in-lieu.

process seems to be getting the paint from the vat into the cans.

Painting Made Easier Painting is the favorite home improvement of the do-it-yourselfer.

As remodeling contractors, we can tell you that many folks, who otherwise hire others to do their work, choose to do their own painting.

We’ve had the opportunity to watch paint being made and, except for the huge size of the mixing vat, the whole process looks a lot like making cake batter. It may surprise you to know we discovered that water-based paint is nothing more than a mixture of water, finely crushed rock, powdered dirt and glue. The water is simply of the tap variety and the rock (usually titanium dioxide) is so finely crushed it looks like wheat flour. The dirt is nothing more than clay in the form of a very fine powder. And the glue is old fashioned white glue (polyvinyl acetate PVA). When the paint is used, the water evaporates and the glue holds the rock and dirt together, and to the wall.

The paint manufacturer uses other chemicals to stop bubbling, retard mildew, etc. But basically the toughest part of the

The quality of the paint can be measured by the ratio of titanium dioxide to clay (rock to dirt). More titanium dioxide and less clay equal better paint. Actually, titanium dioxide is a pigment and clay is a filler. Paint with too much clay has a tendency to chalk.

Since clay is heavier than titanium dioxide cheaper paints tend to weigh more the better ones.

It actually is kind of easy to compare paint. Titanium Dioxide is as fine as talcum powder and clay is far more course and gritty. Give paint the finger test to determine quality. Open the can and rub a freshly shaken can between your thumb and forefinger. If the paint is gritty it has lots of clay. If the paint is smooth and silky it has less clay and more pigment – and that’s the paint that you want.

Besides cosmetics, painting provides protection against damage by moisture and the sun’s rays. Paint is supposed to create a moisture barrier, not a vapor barrier. Your house needs to breath. Paint fails as a protector when moisture can’t pass through it. It peels and splits when vapors can’t penetrate it. This lack of a painted surface’s ability to breathe is usually caused by the presence of too many coats of paint. This is one where more is NOT better.

Before you sign a contract;

A few tips: 1. Pre-painting patchwork should be done with the proper putty or spackle.

Use exterior latex putty for exterior nail holes and cracks. Always prime puttied areas. Putty absorbs paint differently than wood and will cause an uneven finish if left unprimed.

2. When patching with putty, wet the putty knife with water. The water acts as a lubricant and prevents the putty knife from dragging the patching compound out of the hole being patched.

3. Select the right paint brush. Natural bristles for oil-based paint and nylon or another synthetic for water-based paints.

4. Stretch a large rubber band across the top-center of the paint can. Remove excess paint by scraping the brush against the rubber band.

5. If you are using a roller, and the job looks like it’s going to take an additional day, don’t wash it. Simply wrap it in common household cellophane wrap and place it in the refrigerator overnight. It will be fresh for use the next day.

All the little ghosts and goblins, or miniature replicas of this year’s super heroes are gearing up for a night of trick or treating. The farmlands are still showing off their bright orange pumpkins and the hayrides at Smith Family Farms are carrying the little ones out to the patch to pick out the best jack-o-lantern candidate.

With all of the wonderful traditions still in place here in East Contra Costa County, it is a great time to look in on a local business that has been here for 18 years.

Donna Cooper, owner of Designer Dogs Shoppe on Brentwood Blvd. next to Big B Lumberteria, has taken the hot dog stand to another dimension. As soon as I drove up the parking lot, I knew I was in for a real treat. Boasting a canopy covered front and bright blue and white façade, the line at the window was ten deep. Judging from the friendly conversations at the order window, I soon came to realize these were

As the orders came out, I had a tough time making my choice. But, loving a good hot dog, I chose my all time favorite, standard dog with extra cheese. The menu includes all beef dogs, burgers, chicken bites, gumbo, Philly Cheese Steaks, no bean chili and much more, including French Fries. She offers dine-in, take-out, auto service and delivery is available. How cool is that! Imagine getting a taste for a great dog and picking up the phone to have it delivered to you at work. I can just imagine what the lunch room’s reaction would be as they are sitting there with the standard bag lunch when this incredible hot dog with fries gets delivered to your door.

I think the thing I liked best about my experience was the service. I was greeted with a charming smile and welcomed as a new customer. And, I got a wonderful explanation of my menu choices and how long they have been in business.

I know that over the years, Donna, has always opened her heart to contribute to several non-profit organizations and lend a helping hand when needed. This counts ten points in my book.

Now, let me tell you how great my dog was. It is served piping hot on a fresh bun

with all the trimmings. And, unlike other places when you ask for extra cheese, it really was loaded with lots of cheese.

The French Fries were good and hot and perfect with my hot dog. I sat outside and shared some stories with other customers about finding this great place for a real hot dog, and the conversations were full of compliments. As I enjoyed my lunch, the line of people kept coming. Some sat and ate their lunch and others picked up a round of dogs for everyone at work.

And the construction guys leaving Big B Lumberteria zipped up to the window and ordered their usual. I felt myself going back in time, reminiscing about the days you could go to a stand and enjoy a casual lunch and good conversation.

So, Donna, you truly are the champion designer of the perfect hot dog. I am so looking forward to your chili and gumbo and hope that our readers will remember to tell you the snoop sent them when they visit Designer Dogs Shoppe.
