“Historic Downtown Brentwood” As the year comes to an end and with Christmas only 12 days away, the Monthly Grapevine would like to recognize the businesses in Historic Downtown Brentwood and the efforts of the Downtown Brentwood Coalition as they bring a traditional holiday celebration to the “Heart of Brentwood” as this month’s Pick of the Vine. Appropriately named, the Winter Walkabout is scheduled for Saturday December 17th from 3:00 to 7:00 pm and boasts fun for the entire family, including Santa’s Village, a Christmas Caroling Walk, Live Music, Carriage Rides (weather permitting), Hot Cocoa and Cider, Roasted Chestnuts and a Restaurant Tasting Tour with Rudolf as your guide for only $10.00! Although the streets downtown have taken on a new complexion, the history of this small town still remains with its structures, historic facades

and small town charm, hosting a variety of community oriented events, including the Farmers Market, Brides Day Out, Downtown Thursday Nights, Hometown Halloween and the annual Homecoming and Holiday Parades. The Brentwood Downtown Coalition is working on their 2012 Calendar of Events, including the unveiling of our new Civic Center in the spring and monthly themed events for the entire family. With the Brentwood community being made up of over four generations of families and the new residents who moved here for that “small town charm,” the coalition is going to form a Downtown Brentwood Community Advisory Committee to gather insight and vision from those who call this their home. We encourage everyone to support “your downtown” and to patronize these wonderful merchants. Details about the coalition and future events will be posted on their website at www.brentwooddowntown.com and listed monthly in the Grapevine. The Monthly Grapevine is fortunate to have been in business for 18 years and proud to honor the businesses in historic downtown. Their determination and dedication to survive the economic downturn and recent facelift is

admirable. Keeping “old fashioned customer service” as their number one priority, they offer a variety of goods and services for the entire family. Whether it be catching a movie at the historic Delta Cinema or dining at one of the several restaurants not waving the franchise flag, all are unique and essentially the vision of small business entrepreneurs. They welcome input from the community and are anxious to form this new relationship to better serve its residents with civic celebrations that belong to all of us. The CEO Perhaps you’ve noticed over the last couple of months that I’ve been writing the CEO message; Jim and Karen are retiring from the Monthly Grapevine and moving into the next phase of their careers. If you know my parents, Jim and Karen, you will know that “retirement” does not mean the traditional “take it easy and stop working.” You will still see them around at different events and mixers as they are both still very active in the community. They are still the owners of the Monthly Grapevine but off to do other exciting ventures including the opening of FYI Media, a digital signage firm. FYI will also offer design and marketing. As the new CEO, I am very excited to grow “the vine” in new directions while preserving the magazine that you can count on for the latest and the best. And if you don’t know me, I’ve been working with the Monthly Grapevine for over 12 years; Karen has taught me the best of the business and thanks to her I have a well rounded sense of the publishing industry, including graphics, accounting and mailing demographics. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix, graduating class of 2001. I live in Stockton with my husband and my 10-year old daughter. WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

SANTA’S Jewelry Elf This morning brings the third day of fog to the farmlands with that infamous stillness in the air. Residents of East Contra Costa County generally start their day with the early morning sun outlining the horizon of Mt. Diablo, but today it can’t be seen. With all the crops harvested and the land put to bed for the winter, it is time to climb up in the attic and bring down the Christmas décor. What a perfect time to look in on a local company who can make everyone’s dream come true. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and I have never met a gentleman who didn’t appreciate a special gift of jewelry. That being said, I was fortunate enough to meet Mark Broder from Broder Jewelry Design of Brentwood. Loving to shop, especially for jewelry, I was excited to jump in the car for my morning snoop. His store is a little off the beaten path, but is quite easy to find. Just turn down Harvest Park Drive by the bowling alley, pass my friend Kevin at Vornhagen’s Body Shop, look for our famous Dance Expressions and right next door is Broder Jewelry.

I pushed the doorbell to gain my security entrance and was greeted immediately by Mark. This type of security counts two points in my book. I told him I was interested in the sign in the front that said “We buy gold!”. He told me how the process worked and I must say I was really surprised. I had been hearing about selling old necklaces and other jewelry that is tucked away and never worn and thought it was just a scam. Boy, was I wrong. Mark told me people come in with a few pieces and walk out that day with a check, often in the hundreds of dollars. Rather than explain the process, I want you to tear out this article, gather up you old jewelry and go see Mark. You are going to be amazed.

As I was talking with Mark about the gold, the phone rang a couple of times and I told him to go ahead and take his calls as I was not in a hurry. This allowed me to witness his genuine care for each of his customers. I found him to be courteous and kind, while answering each of their questions in a professional manner. After the calls, I asked about a ring that I would like to sell and he told me he had a few friends that specialized in heirloom brokering and would be glad to help me with my request. How great is that! I really felt comfortable about this conversation and will make an appointment with him to see the ring.

The luxury of snooping this wonderful store is my girlfriend just had her wedding ring redone to a new design and added some beautiful new diamonds. Her quote, “Mark was great. The design is perfect and I love my new ring! And he is so professional and nice to deal with.” I can tell you, it is a beautiful ring and fits her personality to a tee. He is a specialist in hand crafted custom jewelry, diamonds, gemstones, repairs and does hand engraving.

Dental Sealants Dental caries or cavities as we commonly know them are the most prevalent pediatric chronic disease. In the past decade, cavities in children aged 2 through 5 have increased. Half of the children in the United States 12 through 15 have cavities. Cavities in the baby teeth are a strong predictor of cavities in the permanent teeth. It is well known that dental caries are an infectious and transmissible disease. The bacterium which causes cavities is streptococcus mutans and transmission from the mother to child is the primary route of spreading the bacteria in early infancy. However, many parents remain unaware that they can transmit cavity causing bacteria to their newborns. Therefore

Dentists have used sealants to protect teeth for several years. It is a safe and very effective procedure which prevents cavities. The chance of developing cavities begins early in life, therefore, children and teenagers benefit a lot from getting sealants. Adults can get sealants also. When we eat food and drink beverages, some of them stick to the teeth. This sticky film is called plaque and is filled with bacteria which create acids that attack and destroy the teeth enamel. If this is not treated it could cause painful cavities, infection and tooth loss. The most common areas which get affected by cavities are the teeth in the back of the mouth like the molars and premolars. These teeth have deep grooves and pits where the bacteria and food particles stick. The toothbrush bristles cannot reach these areas to remove this sticky layer and thus leads to cavities.

Sealants are a special plastic coating that covers and seals these surfaces on the teeth. Therefore sealants act as a barrier protecting teeth enamel from the plaque bacteria and the acids. The procedure is quick and not painful and needs one short visit. Sealants are strong and can last for several years and may need reapplication. Therefore regular checkup visits to the dentist is important to catch cavities in their earliest stages and to prevent cavities by applying sealants. Unfortunately, this would be mantra for life is only truly expressed – by most – during the holiday season‌for some strange reason the weather gets colder and people’s hearts get warmer. They think less about where their next golf game, fishing excursion, or backyard BBQ is going to be and more about where their next donation drop off can be found. Even more unfortunate is the fact that this would be mantra for life – again, for most, as some people practice this genuine trait of giving all year round – has been tainted in the form of commercialization. During this year’s Black Friday we saw senseless acts of greed and violence hit closer to home than ever before. In southern California there was the now

infamous woman who pepper-sprayed over fifteen other shoppers in her attempt to secure an X-Box 360 for her children.The news didn’t report this, but I’m positive she wasn’t thinking about others, or giving, and left no change at the Salvation Army stand on her way out. Heading up further north, on that same Black Friday morning, there was the senseless (fatal) shooting outside of San Leandro’s Wal-Mart. Last, but not least, in our own backyard, we have the break-in that took place at an undisclosed Oakley elementary school. Although this senseless crime didn’t happen on Black Friday, it is sure to affect more people than Antioch’s Wal-Mart had shoppers on Black Friday. The Friends Of Oakley’s stockpile of items – set to touch 800 children, 300 families, and 100 seniors with assistance during this holiday season – was stolen on November 29th from the school in which they were being stored. From this break-in, an estimated $4,000 worth of toys was stolen as well as donated blankets, jackets, and non-perishable food items that the Friends of Oakley cannot put a price tag on. Topping it off is the fact that Oakley had registered more families than ever before to be touched with Christmas packages – including toys, journals, pillows, Christmas dinner, scarves and other small items.

Know Your Options If you are struggling to make ends meet and have negative equity in your home it is important to know what options are available to you. There are a number of different actions that may be made to help you mitigate your financial situation. These include bankruptcy, modification, short sale and foreclosure. Safeguarding Your Home for Children According to the National Safety Council, as many as 26 million children are injured each year as a result of domestic accidents. These accidents ranged from minor cuts and scrapes to death from electrocution and drowning. Cabinet doors, electrical outlets, furniture with sharp corners and even toilets are just a few of the items in a home that are potentially harmful.

• Cabinet doors and drawers are notorious for mashing ďŹ ngers. What cabinets and drawers may contain is of equal or greater concern. Household cleaning products, medications and sharp objects are all potentially dangerous. Child-proof cabinet-latches are simple to install. By far the most popular is a two-piece exible plastic type where a hook attaches to the inside face of the cabinet door or drawer and a catch to the inside of the cabinet. Each of the pieces is attached with a couple of screws provided by the manufacturer. When attaching the devices to oak or other hardwoods it’s a good idea to pre-drill small pilot holes, which will prevent the wood from splitting.

Following are basics to make your home safe for children:

• Electrical outlets pose one of the greatest safety hazards for curious little sized people. There are a couple ways to deal with this problem. Removable plastic outlet caps are the most popular devices. They are twopronged and compression-ďŹ tted into the outlet. They can be removed by an adult when the outlet is needed. Unfortunately, some kids learn how to pull them off.

• The ďŹ rst step is prevention – making sure that all sharp or pointed objects, string, rope, electrical cords, medication and poisons are properly stored and out of reach of children.

Every year on Christmas Eve...... eleven happy faces waited somewhat patiently, to open our gift of new pajamas. I believe the anticipation and excitement of our new pajamas, surpassed that of any other gift. Claudette Naturel-Staton/Founder As Christmas approaches, I remember this tradition with fondness. I also remember there are so many children who have never received a new pair of pajamas; a simple act that brings such joy. Times are tough right now, for everyone. But with your help, we can pass on this wonderful tradition to the next generation of children. Last year we provided pajamas and food to 200 families; still far too many were turned away.
