Challenge to Maintain Dentition The trend toward maintaining teeth is an important contributor to total health and wellbeing and that the baby boomers are leading the charge with the intent on becoming the first generation in history to die with nearly all their natural teeth. A generation ago it was commonly accepted that when you got old, you lost your teeth and wore dentures. The baby boomers have a different set of expectations. They intend to keep their teeth and are learning what to do to maintain their oral health. However, it is a little bit of a liability that, by having teeth they are at risk for disease, especially caries, periodontal disease and, depending on the risk factors, conditions such as cancer. Many of them already have a significant amount of dental treatment; these restorations don’t last forever, due to various reasons and they are subject to needing repair

and replacement. Oral and dental diseases have a disproportionate effect on the elderly for both obvious and less obvious reasons. In addition to years of exposure to bacteria, the teeth and related structures show evidence of wear and tear as a result of normal chewing, talking and destructive habits like clenching and grinding.

A regular routine of daily oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing is very important, along with a protocol of fluoride applications and therapeutic mouth rinses. Using salivary substitutes to keep the mouth from getting dry due to medications is also a great preventative routine, as it helps to prevent root cavities and fungal infections.

The elderly also suffer from chronic disorders that can directly or indirectly affect oral health. They often require multiple medications and a common side effect of several of the medications is reduced salivary flow, which can lead to significant problems of the teeth and their supporting structures. In addition, the elderly may also have difficulty performing routine oral hygiene because of physical limitations or disabilities. Oral infection is now recognized as a risk factor for a number of systemic diseases, like cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and respiratory disorders. It is also important to emphasize that once people have lost all their teeth and are using complete dentures, their oral health needs do not stop. Jaws are not static and may continue to resorb, leading to loose dentures. People without teeth still remain susceptible to oral cancer, mucosal diseases and alterations in the salivary flow.

We all know that periodontal disease and oral cancer are two diseases that have been linked to smoking, so smoking cessation efforts would also improve oral and general health, as well. In addition, keeping up with routine regular check-ups with the dentist is an important part of good oral health care.

LED’s Have Come Of Age How times change. Since the midnineties everyone and his brother has raved about the energy efficiency of the compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). When the CFL was introduced is was more energy efficient than any other type of lighting that had previously been used in the home. Where old-fashioned filament style incandescent bulbs were good for 1200 hours of use, the public clamored to purchase CFL’s that burned for 8,000 hours and more – using one-fifth of the energy. As staunchly as we supported the change from conventional filament lighting to CFL use, we are now in the midst of an even better alternative. We feel that compact fluorescents will be fading away sooner than later. The reason is simple. The next generation of artificial lighting is equally cheap to operate, much, much brighter (and oh so much whiter) and longer lasting than CFL’s too. How about a life span of 25,000 hours for starters!?! Where we never saw a key chain size CFL flashlight an LED keychain flashlight is now at every

checkout counter. The light emitting diode (LED) has finally made its way through lighting puberty (and the flashlight circuit) and is now stretching its “I’m the best and cheapest lighting for your home” muscles. Just about every manufacturer of lighting is now offering some sort of household LED alternative. Big box and independent hardware stores alike, all offer an assortment of LED lighting. Don’t be fooled by the first generation of solar powered LED path lights that barely offered enough light to be seen on anything but pitch-black night. We’ve discovered that LED lighting for the home is literally Amazing! And we are so glad. No mercury, no special handling, and, best of all, LED’s are recyclable Our latest whole house remodel partly involved replacing a 70’s style recessed fluorescent light box and other dated fixtures with new LED recess lights. The result was brighter rooms and halls (no more putrid colored light), even lighting and lighting that is truly white. When the lighting is bright and the lighting is white the true colors used to decorate a room pop out and are more vivid and bold. Also, there is no time delay. LED’s are “instant on” bulbs. LED’s have been used commonly since the early 1960’s as indicator lights in electronics

At the Greenbuild 2012 green products tradeshow we spoke with several light fixture manufacturers who stated that LED technology had “come of age” and that LED had become “dependable enough to manufacture high end commercial lighting” for street lighting, parking lots, stadiums and just about any other conceivable use. We strongly urge you to experiment with a good quality LED light somewhere in your home. The absence of heat, the evenly disbursed bright white light, the continued energy savings you have with fluorescents, the compactness, the instant start up, the unbelievable lasting quality and the absence of mercury make the LED the next “safer” generation of home lighting. The incandescent was our VHS. The CFL was our Laser Disk and the LED is our DVD/Blue-ray. However, due to ongoing activities and constant distractions, we can easily overlook potential dangers to our four-legged family members. Take preventive measures to protect your pets this holiday season. Being aware of these top five dangers could save you a trip to the veterinary emergency room. 1. Holiday Tinsel and Ornaments Tinsel, while not toxic, is very attractive to pets, particularly cats. The shiny, dangling decoration reflects light and can move in the slightest draft — appearing to come alive to watchful critters. The problem with tinsel is that once it’s consumed, it can cause serious injury to your pet. If not caught in time, this foreign body ingestion could actually be fatal as it twists and bunches

inside your pet’s intestines. Immediate veterinary care is required. In addition, bright and colorful tree ornaments can attract your pet’s curiosity. Place glass, aluminum and paper ornaments higher up on the tree. Pets can chew and swallow these fragile objects and not only can broken pieces form sharp edges lacerate your pet’s mouth, throat and intestines, they could also create a choking hazard. 2. Holiday Lighting and Candles Twinkling, shiny and dangling holiday lights - such as the icicle, netting, garland, curtain, rope and candle varietal - may be another source of danger to your curious pets. Got a pet that likes to chew? Electrical shock may occur when a pet chomps down on an electrical cord, causing tongue lacerations and possible death. Check your holiday lights for signs of fraying or chewing and use a grounded three-prong extension cord as a safety precaution.

3. Gift Wrap Ribbon - You may be tempted to fashion your pet with a decorative ribbon “collar” but beware that this could become a choking hazard. 4. Food Hazards - Festive events often mean edible treats — and lots of them. Unfortunately, some of the most popular holiday goodies, such as chocolate, bones and nuts, can be extremely toxic or fatal to pets. Keep your pet on her regular diet and caution visitors against giving your pet special treats or table scraps. 5. Toxic Holiday Plants - They may be pretty, but some holiday plants are poisonous—even deadly. As little as a single leaf from any lily variety of pine needles, holly, mistletoe or poinsettias is lethal to cats.

Fast-Teks Saved My Day! The time is 6:00 am on “Black Friday”. As I look out my window at a beautiful November morning, I can see the sun rising over the distant San Joaquin Delta. The weather outside is certainly not “frightful”, however it is that time of year when we hit the streets running to start our quest for the best deals on the best gifts for Christmas. Seated at my desk, I am going to check my emails for the last of my messages for ALL those “take an additional” coupons before I put on my walking shoes and head for the stores. One click of the mouse and the Christmas Grinch shows up in living color. Those horrible words “your connection has failed” keep repeating with my numerous attempts to push the mouse and I know I need someone to save my Christmas. Millions of users with alwayson-high-speed internet connections are prime targets for email attacks, identify theft, and malicious hacker problems.
