—GAUFEST MILWAUKEE, WI— It was the Sunday Picnic and the German Hungarians were decked out in Snow White and Blue. With a little help from Fun-Bobby’s music machine, the relaxing day was beginning to pick up. Looking back on these affairs, most do not remember the food, the service, and certainly not the beer. They remember the people, the conversations, the music, and the dancing. The highlight then of the picnic I think was the announcement of the top 5 placing groups. (I will now channel my inner Emily.) The announcer welcomed everyone, and called the name of the 5th place club. “Bayern Verein Newark, NJ!” came across the convention center sound system. The cheers were festive and we applauded our friends for their accomplishments. Then the silence took over as the members of our team linked arms and the SuperFans braced for the impact. At that moment in the announcing, anything could happen or nothing at all. The announcement came. “Fourth Place…” deep breaths in, “the UNITED GERMAN HUNGARIANS of Oakford, Pennsylvania.” then came the exhales and the smiles all around. One would ponder why a fourth place finish would be such a moment of excitement to warrant the above prose. Some glass half-empty types may see this ranking as a failure. I know that the majority of the dancers see this as an accomplishment. In 2013, they labeled themselves “Young,” in 2015, “Happy.” My thought after the announcement was, “They are climbing the ladder.” They are taking steps. They are moving forward. It will take hard work and effort. That is what we do.

—AMONG OUR MEMBERS—

—THE INNTALER—

BY EMILY FRICKER The summer is almost over (officially September 23) and that means kids back to school and vacation time is over and of course September means OKTOBERFEST. I should not say vacation time is over; because our seniors travel all year long and actually so do our other members whatever age. It is actually almost four months since I broke my upper arm near my shoulder and it will never be 100% but I am hoping. I am still going to therapy, am able to take care of myself in most areas, and am hoping for a bright future. Although the club has not had many events during the summer, our members, the soccer teams and the dancers, have been very busy. Last month’s newsletter had much information about our various teams and now they are preparing for the fall and winter months. Our dancers have had a very busy spring and summer preparing for the Gaufest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Landestreffen in Los Angeles, California. About 40 people attended the Gaufest and about 30 attended the Landestreffen. All had a good time and the photos of the various events are just terrific. Those who attended both traveled through some interesting areas of the USA and I am sure it was a memorable trip. By this time, our new college freshmen along with their fellow older students have begun a new adventure and our younger members will soon be returning to school. We will miss those who are unable to return to us often and we wish all a successful year. Many of our recent college graduates celebrated with parties at their homes with many friends recently. Among them, Andrew Weyershaeuser who graduated from LaSalle University, Michelle Paul graduating from Bloomsburg, Jennifer Lineman from Chestnut Hill College, and Michael Fricker from Temple University. Congratulations to Matt and Michelle Avrich who recently became parents to a second daughter, Isabelle Claire. Big sister Genevieve promises to teach her all our dances as soon as she is old enough. Congratulations to all! Adelheid Enderle of Philadelphia died on July 9, 2015. She was 91 years old and was born in Europe on May 31 1924. Adelheid was the wife of the late Frank and is survived by her children, Frank and Heidi, their spouses and six grandchildren. She was born in the (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

German Hungarians Perform Club Favorite with 16 Couples in Milwaukee As with most Gauverband related events, the attending clubs are invited to perform an “Ehrentanz” at some time over the weekend. The German Hungarians are no exception. The honor dance is both an opportunity to thank the host as well as entertain the attendance with something special from up your sleeve. Our dancers and friends performed a favorite, the Inntaler. The following couples performed:

It is a testament to what the people of the club are capable of. I think also that everyone had fun and that is an achievement on its own. We need to thank the friends of ours for their help in this performance. We were honored to have them. Thank you to Eric Schoellkopf and Josh Meck of the Auerhahn Schuhplattler Verein, Erik, Gerard, and Stefan Hugel of the Schlierachtaler Stamm, and Paul Ulrich of Bayern Verein Newark, NJ. We could not have performed without you. Thanks again for your help and friendship! To all of the dancers, great job and congratulations on the weekend’s success!

She worked as a seamstress for many years and was a resident of the Lawndale section of Philadelphia and a member of the Presentation BVM parish in Cheltenham for over 50 years. She was also a member of two German social clubs, - the Donauschwaben and the United German Hungarian. Adelheid and her husband enjoyed attending many events at both clubs. They were often seen at our club with their friends enjoying our dinners and dancing together and with their friends. Her funeral mass was held at her church on July 14. We offer our sympathy to her family and we will miss Adelheid as well as Frank. Ingrid Schickling (nee Ertl) of Williamstown, NJ died on August 1, 2015. She was the wife of the late Edward who died in April of 2013. They were both members of the BVV Club and attended many BVV events and our events throughout the years. Many of our members probably do not know her name, but if you would see her, you would remember her as a very friendly and attractive woman. She especially enjoyed our dancers. ly, friends, and members of the Bavarian Club. Dr. Frank A. Welsch of Doylestown, died on August 8, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 68 years old and was the only child of Frank and Susanna Welsch. He was raised in Kensington and worked at his parents Neighborhood Grocery and Meat Market. He attended St. Joseph’s Prep High School and received a degree in chemical engineering from Drexel University. He later enrolled in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. Frank is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 43 years and his daughter and son and their families. His funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Doylestown. Frank was a well-known and successful physician until retiring in 2014. He was an avid gardener and loved cooking. He was known as “pop-pop” to his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time at Long Beach Island with his family and friends. He lived his life as “a man for others.” Our members especially the old timers will recognize his parent’s names, especially Susanna Welsch who was a most dedicated member of our club. Our sympathy goes to Frank’s family.
