—HOUSE COMMITTEE— Dressing Rooms Get a Face-Lift The House Committee recently completed the first phase of its latest project as they performed some much needed renovations to the dressing room areas. These areas are seldom seen by the majority of our members but a vital space to both our Soccer Program and Cultural Group (and also a favorite area to store our old stuff). During nights and weekends our committee worked to get the space ready for the spring and summer soccer seasons. Removal of the excess clutter, replacement and additions of new drywall, some fresh paint and general cleaning added a new look to the Home and Visitor locker rooms for the first time since the 1990s. And due to some recently vacated space the Home Team Dressing Room was restored to its original size and has already accommodated a small group for dance practice when the main hall was already in use. Special thanks to Joe Hartmann, Werner Fricker Jr., Steve Paul, Michael Fricker, Sasha Malofiy, Mike Noel for their help with the project.

—ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULE—

—TRENTON CELEBRATES 60TH—

The entertainment committee has put together a rather extensive and exciting entertainment schedule for 2016.

Our Landsleute and friends across the Delaware River are planning a gala celebration to honor their founding six decades ago. Begun during a time when so many Donauschwaben (a.k.a. German Hungarians!) immigrated to the US, the Trenton organization has a proud history of accomplishments all of us can appreciate. Above all, they’ve remained a multi-generational club that has been able to count on both young and old and everyone in between to keep the doors open and the activities interesting. Among the evening’s highlights will be performances by the U.G.H. and Philadelphia/Trenton dancers and music for your dancing and listening pleasure by our very own Heimatklänge. It promises to be a good time for all. The event will be held at the spacious ballroom of the nearby German American Society (www.gakclub.org) on October 15 from 5 to 9 PM. Tickets are $35.00 for adults and include a buffet dinner. For more information or to make reservations contact them at DSATrenton@AOL.com or 609.586.6109. We look forward to seeing you there! Anna Martini

AUGUST 05, 2016

month at-a-glance OAKFORD, The Steuben Day Observance Association hosted German Day this year at our clubhouse and grounds on June 25. It was a cultural, social, and communal success. The day is a fundraiser for the German-American Parade on October 9 in Rockledge-Fox Chase. It is also the location and date of the all important crowning of Miss German-America Philadelphia. This year three capable and smiling candidates vied for the title as they went through the interview process that morning. When the announcements were made we were happy to see that Allysa Reiter was crowned as the 1st Princess! Allysa has spent her life at the club and remains today an active member of the cultural and Schuhplattler Groups. In 2013 Allysa and her partner Werner Fricker III, placed 3rd in all of North America at the Einzelplattler at Gaufest. Allysa has also often been a member of our group Preisplattler teams. We are very proud of her and her accomplishments as she recently graduated from Philadelphia University. We know we will see her represent our German-American and German Hungarian community well this year. Allyssa Schulz, of the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe, and the Delaware Saengerbund was crowned Miss GermanAmerica for 2016-2017 and we were very excited and happy for her as well. Allyssa has been seen attending more of our functions recently as she is dating the good looking editor of this newspaper. She has also taken the commitment to become a member of the United German Hungarians this year. Needless to say we are very proud of our Ally(s)sa’s and we wish them a fun, informative, and proud year on the court. Congratulations are also in order to Krista Pinkerton of the German-American Police who was crowned the 2nd Princess on German Day!. Good luck this year and we will see you all at the parade. www.ughclub.us

In the 1960s as our Cultural group was forming another group of good folks gathered to create a lasting legacy and celebrate an annual celebration for all of the Philadelphia German-American Community. A few of our parents, to some of you your grandparents, were part of those special meetings. From that they created the annual Steuben Day Parade. We participated in the first parade and have continued to march and participate every year since. This celebration gave us a chance to march with real pride, waving and smiling in front of the general community, celebrating the contributions of all German-Americans to this great city, state and nation. More importantly, and in reality as far as we were concerned, we have always had an enjoyable time participating. We have worn our club tracht; we have worn our soccer uniforms, our lederhosen and our dirndl. To march and be seen by others in the German community, as well as the general public has made for some really proud moments. We marched as dancers, soccer players, and wine and sausage makers. We have marched celebrating our Kirchweih where we carried the decorated rosmarein strauss from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Independence Hall. We have been all proud to see our German Hungarian girls on occasion reign proudly in the parade as Cornflower Queens and members of the Miss German-America Court. The group that runs the parade is a conglomerate or association of all of the clubs, societies and organizations in the area of Philadelphia and Vicinity. It is a great outlet for all of these clubs to work and celebrate together. The Parade is an institution that in return has been good to each of us that have been a part of it. I have had long discussions with other past GH Presidents, as well as many active leaders and thinkers at our club of someday involving ourselves more in the leadership and organization of the Parade and the events surrounding the GermanAmerican Community as a whole. We have been reluctant over the years to do so as we needed to always concentrate on our own club first. Our Time Has Come! Together with three other dedicated members of the German Hungarians I have taken on the leadership of the German|

American Steuben Parade of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Together with fine individuals from several other clubs we have dedicated ourselves to leading the parade into the future. Like the German Hungarians we are dedicated to success in the future while we live by the principals of the past. Beginning at the end of August and continuing through September our Community will celebrate with festivals, events and the beginning of a new fresh soccer season. These events are all vital to the financial success of each organization that sponsors them. In reality they are more than that, they are an integral part of the celebration of traditions, values and good friendship among the members and friends of each organization. October 6, 2016 is German-American Day a national Holiday and it will also be the celebration of 333 years since the first German Settlers arrived here in Germantown. A weekend of German-American Heritage and Pride will take place on October 7, 8, and 9. On October 7, at 12 noon we will gather at the north side of City Hall in Philadelphia. There the German-American Committee will accept from the Mayor of Philadelphia a proclamation recognizing the holiday and the contributions of all of our people to this great community and nation. The following day on October 8 we will gather in the evening here at the United German Hungarians for the Steuben Day Observance Association Gala Banquet. It will be a CELEBRATION OF OUR PEOPLE. All of this will culminate with our Annual German-American Steuben Parade! At noon on Sunday October 9 we will march together in Rockledge- Fox Chase. We will smile, we will wave, we will be proud. I am committed to this, but I want to share the excitement and pride with all of you, my friends and fellow German Hungarians. Please come support all of these events. Come watch the parade and support the businesses in Rockledge-Fox Chase. Thanks as always for your support, and see you on Huntingdon Pike on October 9. German Hungarian Soccer Organizes for 94th Season OAKFORD – The United German Hungarians of Philadelphia and Vicinity are proud to announce the adult amateur staff for the 2016-2017 season. This year marks the 94th anniversary of that first team that organized in 1922 as the Banater Athletic Club. The United Soccer League of Pennsylvania announced the return of a second division, dubbed “Major II.” We will field a team in this division that will train, play, and build with the first Major Division team. Michael Curley will return as Head Coach, with Assistant Coaches, Benny Landers and Brian Blesi helming the Major II and Under-23 respectively. Stephen Thompson, with Brian Blesi coaching, will manage the Over-30 side. The over 30 will continue to enter the Inter-County Soccer League. An exciting new staff with the hopes of injecting youth guided by experience will be managing the Major Women. Michelle Paul will manage the team with legends Cathy Ford and Steve Paul teaming up to coach. The Women’s Division team will continue to play league matches in the United Soccer League. Werner Fricker III is returning as the General Manager of German Hungarian Soccer. “We are excited to be bringing all the adult amateur teams together at the German Hungarians with a common goal and organization. Every first Wednesday of the Month - 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the German Hungarian’s Major Division team trav(Includes Two Side Dishes Plus a Salad, Bread & Butter and Coffee or Tea) eled around 800 miles to Chicago to play in the 41st Annual US National Donauschwaben Wednesday, August 3 Soccer Tournament. This year it was hosted Wednesday, September 7 by Chicago Green-White. The tournament would consist of 5 games played over 2 days, $11.00 for adults | $5.00 for children (Dessert is Available for Purchase | Fully Stocked Cash Bar) 6 if the team managed to make the final. onto the end of a through ball, rounded the keeper to just pass the ball into an empty net. Right before the stroke of halftime, the kickers were awarded a penalty, which could have shifted the momentum of the game. Stevie Paul, the youngest member of the squad, pulled off an absolute brilliant save to a keep the momentum in his team's favor. The final goal of the game came in the second half from the boot of Pat Raykovitz, courtesy of a Webster delivery from a free kick. Going into Sunday, the Majors took on the two teams who would end up in the final, Milwaukee Sport Club and Detroit Carpathia. The team needed 4 points to guarantee a place in the final. With fatigue setting in after Saturday’s matches, the Major’s failed to produce the same scoring prowess on Sunday. While playing a very stingy defense, they managed to outplay Milwaukee, but drew the match 0:0. Then in a very exciting, end-to-end match with Detroit, the Majors narrowly lost their only game of the weekend to the eventual Champions 0:1. Overall, the team went out with a young, relatively inexperienced squad and showed well. Playing a very expansive, progressive style of soccer, they outscored their opponents 8-4 throughout the five games. The statement made, puts a nice end cap on the end of a season that shows real promise for the future of the squad. The team would like to thank all of the Superfans who made the near 800-mile trek, via plane and Jeep, to support us from the sideline and make sure we enjoyed all the festivities and history of the US Donauschwaben Tournament. Next year will be another great group, heading to another great tournament. Robbie Stewart
