month at-a-glance OAKFORD, Another year over and a soccer season at a midpoint. Winter means a time to recount what we’ve done and make plans for what we hope to do. The Monthly Progress believes that writing about what we do not only recounts it for generations to come, and self promotes it for the benefit of all members, but aids in self reflection, planning and organization. So too embedding photographs of the key people involved and the notable exploits of individual team successes aids us as we move into a spring season. It even builds for the next fall series of soccer, the one after that and so on. To this end we now announce the extended February soccer edition of the Monthly Progress. By the writing of this column the appropriate parties have been encouraged to submit their individual write-ups for their teams and the vivid pictures for inclusion. With any endeavor we sit perched on the edge of the starting line with no knowledge of the success or failure of the idea. Maybe it will soar with news items about our soccer teams, stats, highs and lows of the first half season and pictures of our players, coaches, administrators, and traditions of the German Hungarians. All said, printing this column is in the hope that the parties involved participate with vigor, as ultimately the audience is also the author. Our distribution is digital and on printed paper, and like the masthead reads, the Monthly Progress is “Published by the United German-Hungarians of Philadelphia and Vicinity.” Michael

Congratulations to our Vice President, Steve Paul and his wife Christina who recently celebrated their wedding anniversary. Also to Joe and Hanni Reiter who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Both these couples were members of our dance group although many years apart. Steve and Christina were also members of our soccer program. We wish all many happy years together. You may have seen Kyra Malofiy recently limping around as she hurt her foot by wearing a certain kind of sandal during the summer days. This was not very good for her feet and so she was not able to dance at the Oktoberfest and just about managed at the Kirchweihfest. Hope she will be joining the dancers soon. Frances Pokorni recently had a spinal operation and hopefully will be better soon. She was unable to attend the Oktoberfest or the Kirchweih and misses coming to the club. We wish her the best of health. Karina Fricker, employed at the Goddard School in Horsham as an assistant teacher at this elementary preschool has been named as their Employee of the Month of December. “Miss Karina” as she is known to the children arrives each morning with a friendly smile and spends time greeting each child in her charge. Her warm nurturing personality has enabled her to create a meaningful bond with the toddlers well as with their parents The school appreciate all her had work and her dedication to the school. Congratulations, Karina! Congratulations to Brian Noel and Daniella DiLacqua who were recently married. Brian is the son of Michael and Kathi Noel and the great grandson of the late Peter and Mary Noel. Brian was active in our Cultural Group

and recently jumped in when needed at the Kirchweih. It was nice to see him dancing with the group. Best wishes to this young couple. The Women’s Auxiliary recently held their Annual Fall Penny Party and it was a huge success. Many went out the door with lots of prizes. Why don’t you join us for our Springtime Penny Party and maybe you’ll be the big winner. All had a lot of fun! Congratulations to Mikaela Malofiy who was recently named to the Fall Mid Atlantic Conference All Sportsmanship Team for Women’s Soccer. Mikaela is a sophomore at Widener University and is studying Business Management. She has appeared in 2016 in all 17 matches having started 14 times. She is a graduate of Hatboro-Horsham High School and was a four letter winner making the all conference team twice. She is a back line player and is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. The sports teams chosen for this honor are: Men’s Cross Country, Volleyball, Field Hockey, Football, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer and Women’s Cross Country. 111 Athletes were recognized for their leadership on and off the field. Teams include one student athlete from each institution for each sport. The student athletes are recommended by the head coach of their respective tea. They represent their team, institution, and the conference with high integrity exhibiting respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, and opponents. Can it really be that 2016 is almost over?! 2017 promises to bring a lot of surprises for some members of the German Hungarians. Could YOU be one of them??? ef
