The German Hungarians continued our tradition of traveling to this tournament usually held in the Midwest. Since our return to the competition in 2010, we have made the trip every year except once (Milwaukee in 2013) and each year the excitement grows among our Team and Superfans. Expectations were high when we left Oakford with a strong squad of players, a combo of our Major-Reserve, U23s and a few guests – and Superfans who always provide the best support for our boys in red and black. Mother nature had different plans for us this year. Mansfield received a lot of rain during the week leading up to the tournament, soaking their fields which were otherwise in immaculate condition. By kickoff of our first game the field turned to a mud pit (the staff may still be working to get that Mansfield mud out of our white kits). Our first game against local Akron was a sign of things to come. Frustrating conditions lead to mistakes and missed chances early. But the games would continue and you need to put the ball into the back of the net to win and we weren’t able to do that over the course of the weekend. Congratulations to the Carpathia Kickers from Detroit for raising the newly dedicated “Mike Talan Wanderpokal” for the first time! A few people need to be thanked for their special support. Our SUPERFANS -- we couldn’t run this trip the way we do each year without their support – both financially and during the course of the weekend. They are more than spectators as they help with beverages, ice, equipment, laundry, you name it, even creating our very own “Oakford Central” on the grounds of the Mansfield Liederkranz. This year we put out a fundraising request asking to provide financial contributions to assist in getting our players to Mansfield. Within a week of the request, we were more than half way to our goal which was accomplished by the time we boarded the bus westward. The following members and alumni deserve a special Thank You and acknowledgement: Brian Blesi, Ray DeStephanis, Eric Drewenskus, Bill Galgon, Jason Karasow, Betty Ann Kempf, Steve Friend, Emily Fricker, Marlene Fricker, Michael Fricker, Jonathan Ryan Moseley, Erwin & Kathi Stielow, Jack Tombaugh. We are proud to be the hosts of this great, historic tournament next season. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2018 in Oakford, PA! For Little Boys & Girls to Eat!

On Wednesday, July 5th, two teams met for the Championship match of the 2017 Barry Strube Challenge Cup. This game was the culmination of the inaugural Challenge Cup as organized by the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania. As you may have read in the fall, this season The League welcomed back the “Reserve” division in the form of the Major II Division. The number of Clubs which were able to participate in the Major-Reserve setup were limited however, and reserve squads were looking to add more games to the schedule. As a result, the Board of Directors of The League devised the Challenge Cup as a way to add meaningful matches to the schedule and allow Teams to fill their schedules. Any Major or Major II teams were able to participate in the Challenge Cup as long as they could agree with an opponent on a time and location. The rules allowed for crossover matches between the divisions and required a minimum of 3 qualifying matches to be played for a team to be eligible for the Championship. More information can be found here: http:// uslofpa.leagueapps.com/pages/ChallengeCup At the end of the season, the German Hungarians II were first in the standings with Phoenix II just behind so the historic Clubs faced off in front of a mixed crowd. The game got off to a flat start with players just back from their Independence Day vacations and would stay scoreless through the first half. The German Hungarians would turn up the pressure in the second half as Austin Kotch scored two goals and John Gravelle sealed the win with a late third for a final score of 3-0. Both teams and supporters gathered at midfield as Barry Strube presented The Cup to Captain Robbie Stewart! Werner III

—OKTOBERFEST 2017— I have two German-American dictionaries. I looked up the word “Oktoberfest” and couldn’t find anything BUT when I looked in my Webster’s Dictionary of the American Language, I found “Oktoberfest” 1) a beerdrinking festival held in Munich, Germany in the fall; 2) a similar festival held elsewhere. The United German Hungarians have continuously held an Oktoberfest on our outside grounds since 2002. We had hosted this event with members of the Bayerischer Volksfest Verein for approximately 14 years and last year we continued this event ourselves. We had previously held various Oktoberfests in our clubhouse throughout the years but it was not a steady event. Our Oktoberfest has become the largest |

and most important fund raiser of the year for the German Hungarians. We ask all our members to attend and invite your family and friends to do the same. We feel that it is not only a “beer-drinking” event but an important cultural and social event. Not only do we sell beer and various other drinks but we sell delicious German and American foods and have excellent German music and dancing throughout the day. We also have our soccer teams on hand for the fans of this sport. Keep the dates open (Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24) to join us in this wonderful celebration! ef
