Oktoberfest at the German Hungarians

Sunday, June 25 at 11:00 am It was 1989 and we had traveled to Parsippany, New Jersey to not only have our Schuhplattler Group participate in the competition for the first time but to have our members attend for the first time. Bayern Verein Newark and Edelweiss Passaic were the hosts. Our dancers had attended as observers in 1985 in Denver Colorado and in 1987 they performed an “Ehrentanz” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Now they had invited us to come along. It was a large group and it continued to be a large group over the years. Many times, we won the “Meist” (most) prize. In Parsippany, we placed 14th in group competition. In British Columbia 6th; In Buffalo, Milwaukee and Newark, Delaware we place 3rd each time. In 1999, in St. Paul, Minnesota we placed 1st. We basically used the same dancers each time. Janet Malofiy, Sasha Malofiy, John M. Blank, John Reiter, Rolf Stielow, Lisa Fricker, John Hubert, Billy Simon, Connie Reiter, Karen David, and Susi Hartmann. Others included were: Joe Reiter, Barbara Reiter, Frank Schiller, Yvonne Frazier, Jason Noel, Jennifer O’Farrell, Ed Tokarski, Chris Tokarski, Nichole Blank Deely, Michelle Galgon, Christine Krueger, and Linda Buchhalter. Marlene Blank was the Schuhplattler team coach while Jack Mattes was the accordion player. Later the player was Maria Antonia and presently it will be Dino Jakovasic. In 2001 in Ellenville, NY, hosted by the Gemuetlichen Enzian we placed 4th. This was the Gaufest that was to change everything. The Couple Einzelplattler was introduced for all ages. In 2003, we, the United German Hungarians hosted the Gaufest and we placed 2nd. We were now invited to compete in Ingolstadt, Bavaria Germany where we placed 5th. In 2005, we placed 7th in Buffalo, New York. It was now 2007, and our club has always believed that the youth should be put into the limelight when they were ready, dancers or soccer players. The coach and the dancers realized that we would need some new and younger dancers. Danny Galgon, Werner Fricker III, Alex Blank, and Nichole Blank were added. Susi Hartmann, Karen David, Janet Malofiy, Connie Reiter, Lisa Fricker, Rolf Stielow, Billy Simon, John Reiter remained. At

the Hershey Gaufest (2007) we placed 1st!!! In the Individual Adult Einzelplattler Couples (ages 35-49) Janet and Sasha Malofiy also placed 1st. We were now invited to Planegg, Munich Germany (2008) to compete and we placed 6th. 2009 in Toledo, Ohio we placed 5th and in Orlando, Florida we placed 8th. In 2013 in Sandusky, Ohio we placed 6th and Werner Fricker III and Alyssa Reiter placed 3rd in the Couple Einzelplattler (ages 16 to 34). In Milwaukee in 2015, we placed 4th. During the past years we have retired the older dancers and have added, Sasha Malofiy, Jr., Michael Fricker, Karina Fricker, Mikaela Malofiy, Emma Walter, Michelle Paul, Allysa Reiter, and Kristen Reiter. With the graduation of the older dancers, our senior fans have also slowly eliminated themselves from the scene. They had been attending for over 25 years. They were slowly approaching 80 years of age. It was an effort to travel so far and to walk so far from place to place. Now the former dancers and their friends are the fans and their children are the prize group dancers. BUT we, the seniors and all the club fans, can still attend the warm-up and cheer our Prize Plattler Schuhplattlers who so many years ago were the little kids who watched their parents and friends dance. Please attend our warm-up on Sunday, June 25 at 11:00 am. There is NO ADMISSION charge for this event. We will be selling food and drinks. We will be happy to see you there! We also invite any Soccer players who are free at that time to join us. ef

—IN MEMORIAM—

Founded by TED KERECZMANN† in 1946

JOSEF HARTMANN August 16, 1933—April 3, 2017 It was the mid 1950s, (around 1956, I think) all the young girls were excited even those who had boyfriends, because Heidi Hartmann’s handsome cousin Joe was coming from Austria. (Joe was born in Kikinda, Banat, Yugoslavia and with his family in the aftermath of WWII had fled the communists and now lived with his family in Austria) Heidi had shown us photos and had talked to John and Erwin Galgon because Joe was a musician and wanted to play with their Heimatklänge Band. This band had a new sound and even though they didn’t always play everthing as perfect as could be, we still loved them. Joe arrived and the boys and the girls were looking forward to meeting him and hear him play with the band. It was a Saturday night and the band was probably playing at the Karpathian Club (the Zipser Club,) near Cottman and Torresdale Aves. That was Heimatklänge home base, but they played at many other clubs, the names which I don’t remember as many do not exist today, but I know that the “gang” traveled all over, where ever they played. We made many new friends who also came to our club when we had an event. Anyway, we all met Joe that night and he made many friends from all over. He was a very personable young man, was friendly and spoke to everyone with a smile. Joe was involved with our club as much as he could be since he played with the band almost every weekend. He danced with the large group of Kirchweih couples in November of 1956 with his girlfriend Anna Krachtus. Joe was soon drafted into the armed forces and spent most of his time in Colorado. Upon his return, the couple soon were married and settled down. They lived for a while in New Jersey where Anna lived for many years and then bought a home in Philadelphia. Soon they found out that they would be blessed with twins. Two small girls were born to them - Monica Grace and Lisa Anne. I don’t have to go into the struggles that young parents have with one child, let alone two. Life continued for the Hartmann Family and a few year later their son Joseph Peter was born. They brought their children to our club to join our Cultural Group and later moved to Warminster. Their kids, Lisa and Joe are still involved in our Cultural Group and the every day workings of our club as committee members and/or chairmen. Their son Joe became involved with the Heimatklaenge Youth Band at a young age as he was also musically inclined as were many other members of the Hartmann Family. Since this was the case, Joe, the father, decided he would again join the band. He remained with the band until the senior members all retired after playing with the dance band, the brass band, and the brass ensemble. Skip to Sunday March 19, 2017. Those who had attended our General Membership Meeting had lunch together in the main hall – the seniors – the middle aged – and what we still call “the youth” (teenagers and older). All disappeared into the bar room while a few seniors – Joe and Hanni Reiter, Joe and Anna Hartmann and Emily Fricker, remained in the main hall talking away for hours. We talked about the club, our lives outside of the club, our children, our homes, our friendship and about the 107th Anniversary Banquet we would all attend next Saturday. Little did we dream when we finally separated that we would never again see Joe Hartmann! Joe was taken into the hospital during that week and was unable to attend the banquet. Little did any of us dream that Joe would be gone from us in a few days. Josef Hartmann was survived by his wife Anna, his children Monica (Phil Simon) of Roslyn; Lisa (Werner Fricker Jr,) of Horsham, Joseph P. Hartmann (Susi Schuetz) of Philadelphia, and his six grandchildren, Werner III, Michael, Karina Fricker, Anneliese, Zachary. and Jesse Simon. Joe is also survived by his brothers, Karl and Walter, their wives and many nieces and nephews as well as cousins and friends. When we say someone has friends, we know that those of us who are active in a German American Club have a lot of friends, because we know a lot of people from that community. The same way that Joe Hartmann made so many friends the first night he played with the band, he made friends all through his life. His memorial service held at the Wm. Rowen Grant Funeral Home in Southampton was attended by so many people. His family was amazed at all who attended. It was a great tribute to Joe Hartmann a great man, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and a special person to all who knew him. We will miss your friendly greeting and handshake!!! Farewell, Nachbar! ef

Our Women’s Auxiliary has been busy. They take care of our monthly Schnitzel Night with the help of some of our men and naturally many of the women and some dancers of our Cultural Group. They also support other German American clubs by attending their events. We attended the Donauschwaben Penny Party in March, the V. E. Fashion show and Luncheon in April, the Cannstatter Frauen-Verein’s Mother’s Day Luncheon in May, and the Phoenix Ladies Auxiliary Annual Fashion Show and Dinner also in May. The Women are also members of our various Boards, Executive Board, Board of Governors and Committee and Group Chairmen. More about this group in a future edition. Happy Birthday to Kim Walter who recently celebrated her 50th birthday among family and friends and especially to her son Nick who celebrated his 21st! I noticed that there were a few other familiar names on facebook celebrating around the same time. Can’t remember them all but Happy birthday to all, especially Taz Beecher Kelly and Ann Truppay. More babies have arrived! Charlotte Eleanor was born on April 25 to Brianne and Dan Galgon. She has already been at the club a few times and is just beautiful as all babies are. The family is very active in various areas of our club and it looks like Charlotte will be too. The family lives in Southampton. Avery Rose was born on May 1 to Kelli Kilpatrick and John Blank Jr. Marlene Fricker has already been out to visit her new granddaughter and is just thrilled with the new little one. It will be a while until this darling little baby will come to our club as the family lives in Vail, Colorado. Avery will probably be skiing before she visits our area. A wonderful little boy, Sean Bowers, the first great grandson of member John Stefany, was born to John’s granddaughter, Christine Bowers and her husband, Liam. The Bowers family lives in Abington and we invite them to visit our club. Alexander Michael, who get’s the prize for a full head of dark hair, was born on May 28 to Stephanie and John Zygmont. Congratulations to all! Although this is Stephanie’s first child it is John’s third son. The family lives in Horsham. There were some beautiful photos on Facebook of the Zygmont family, the three brothers and Mom and Dad. Grandpa Michael Wagner, our Treasurer is also very proud. Reese Piccone was born to Michelle and her husband Shannon Piccone on Mother’s Day, May 14. Michelle is the daughter of Kathy (Serwo) and Ken Durning. Kathy is a former Cultural Group member and she is also the daughter of Katherine and the late Paul Serwo. The Piccone family live in Allentown Ava Pearl arrived early, on June 2 to Jodi and Ed Galgon, just in time to get her name in this newsletter with all the above babies. Ava and Mom doing well and arrived home on Sunday in time to miss cousin Charlotte’s Baptism celebration and a baby shower for Jodi. The family lives in Lansdale. We congratulate the Galgon, Harris, Kilpatrick, Blank, Fricker, Bowers, Stefany, Buerger, Wagner, Zygmont, Piccone, Serwo, Crouthamel and Galgon again, families and anyone I skipped who is related to these new babies. We can’t wait to meet them all! Magda Paul’s grandson Christopher Paul and his wife Wendy recently made a surprise visit to Magda. Christopher is the son of Magda’s son John and the nephew of our Vice President, Steve Paul. The young couple reside in California and needless to say Magda was more than pleased to see them. Last month we mentioned that Christopher Deely who is now age 8 and has recently made his First Holy Communion is involved in sled hockey. His team played in a tournament in Massachusetts and came in second place. Christopher proudly wore his medal. Matthew Proll had his Holy Communion Party at our club on April 30. All his family and friends had a good time enjoying the fun and food. We congratulate Matthew! Mitzi and Jimmy Pack recently visited our area attending our May Schnitzel Night and the Alex Meixner Night. They both look well and healthy. We wish them both good luck and happiness. Gabriel Dwyer, of Glenside, grandson of Anna and Florie Kempf, and Sasha Malofiy, Jr. of Horsham, both recently traveled with the soccer team and fans to play in the Landesverband Soccer Tournament in Mansfield, Ohio. Gabe recently graduated from Immaculata University with a degree in Mathematics and a Certification in Secondary Education. Sasha recently graduated from Philadelphia University with a degree in Business Marketing & Advertising. We congratulate both boys and would like to hear from any other recent graduates in our Soccer or Cultural Programs. ef |
