—BLACK TIE— I have heard somewhere that we German Hungarians like to be seen. I don’t know where that idea came about but thinking about it, I can’t help but think it's true. We like wearing our club colors, our tracht, and our crest. We like appearing in uniform to all the places we go no matter the fact that most of our faces say “German Hungarians,” without the use of one letter. We also like wearing our best out on a Saturday night with shoes shined, ties perfectly tied, hair combed nicely or done up. We like gowns and tuxedos, suits and cocktail dresses. We like wristwatches, necklaces, and makeup and pocket squares. It’s no doubt then that in an age when sweat pants and sneakers (untied) rule the day we German Hungarians still celebrate our yearly Anniversary with a Gala affair; Black Tie Suggested. On Saturday, March 30, 2019, please join us for the 109th Anniversary Banquet with our usual flair! This time it is taking place at the Trifecta Sporting Club. Where’s that you ask? I think you might have been there before. It's at the familiar address of 4666 E Bristol Road, Feasterville, PA 19053. Don't worry, the usual entertainment will be on hand with the Heimatklänge Orchestra providing music and the dance group is sure to make a performance.

EDITORIAL:

—RECORDING OUR STORY—

Each and every year it feels like we get a fresh start at the beginning of the 12-month calendar. It is easy to be bogged down in trying to be and do better. We use the past year as an example. Trying harder is not a bad thing but it can be well, hard. Sometimes when I try to get things in life and club together, I reflect on what has worked and what has failed in the past. Inevitably, I realize that things seem to go the most smoothly when I have time, and inspiration, to write articles, editorials, and entertain-

ment reviews about everything and anything we do. There is the age-old complaint many have of “writer’s block,” which more often than not, for me, is really just an

—IN THE KITCHEN WITH JENN— The best recipes are not created in a test kitchen for the latest issue of a magazine and you cannot find them in timelapse videos on Facebook. The best recipes come from families. They are the tried-and-true recipes for your favorite dishes, the dishes you ask to have for dinner on your birthday every year. You cannot find them in a magazine or on the internet and that is just the problem. No matter how hard we try to pass recipes down and keep tradition alive, the reality is that they can be lost in an instant. Some family recipes are never written down. This is probably due to the lack of measurements. When asked how much paprika to put in the Chicken Paprikash, my Great-Grandmother would say, "As much as it takes." It took me some time but I finally figured out how much it takes, got it written down and tucked it away in my recipe box that could easily be tossed in the trash by a generation who does not have time to cook or is obsessed with their Keto diets. Fortunately, Landesverband Frauengruppe has preserved more than 500 recipes from families throughout the US and Canada in their new cookbook. The Landesverband Frauengruppe Cookbook contains a variety of recipes from Easter Bread to Gypsy Steaks, but

the cold January weather had me searching for a soup recipe. I decided to make Charlotte Bomba's Farina Dumplings (recipe submitted by Julie Baker – Chicago Donauschwaben). The recipe has simple ingredients, exact measurements and easy-to-follow instructions. The warm broth and tender dumplings paired perfectly with my low-carb bratwurst cabbage wrap with beer-braised onions. I cooked the bratwurst according to Marlene Fricker's instructions found on page 66 of the book. Both the soup and bratwurst cooking method required little time at the stove. I was able to set the timer and go get some work done. The book is full of flavorful yet simple recipes for real food that you can make no matter how busy you are or what diet you are on. Jenn Blank

Farina Dumplings (Griessklösschen) 1 cup milk Pinch of nutmeg 1 tablespoon butter ¾ cup Cream of Wheat Pinch of salt 2 eggs Bring first four ingredients to a boil and then remove from heat. Pour the Cream of Wheat into the hot milk and stir with a wooden spoon until it all comes together into one big ball. Let cool a bit and then stir in one egg until totally incorporated. Then stir in the second egg until totally incorporated. Using 2 teaspoons, form oval shaped dumplings, and drop them into your hot soup broth (I used 6 cups). Cook them in the broth for 10 minutes and then turn off the heat and put a cover on your pot and let them rest in the pot for 15-30 minutes before serving. EDITOR’S NOTE: My predecessor often says, “I like to eat!” That sentiment is one of many things I’ve inherited from her. We as a German-Hungarian family like to gather around the table and share in home cooked meals, snacks, and sweets. The Landesverband Frauengruppe Cookbook is a new opportunity for us to share. With recipe’s from 12 cities, 15 clubs and hundreds of families it is a must have. Oh and there will be a few familiar names and dishes in its pages. VOLUME SEVENTY-FOUR

—RECORDING OUR STORY— (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) excuse. The truth of it all is really about discipline and committing to write down the things that I have already listed above. We German Hungarians have always had a resume of available records that we scribble down, add to, every few years revise, and reprint often. What I forget, only to be reminded by my mother and grandmother, is that these things we write and print in the Monthly Progress are the records that we use in those epic histories that make up those “resumes.” When I got married last year, my father urged us to do everything well so that the story can be written well in the end. When it comes to the German Hungarians, we must ensure that the story not only be written well in the end but that we continue to live as a club. We must continue to record what we do. There will be a time when those of us that are here now will be gone and a new generation of German Hungarians will be bearing the torch. As they move forward, they will have our records, our writings, and our story to use as an example. They will stand on our shoulders and they will learn from our successes as well as our mistakes. So, we will keep doing, and we will keep trying, and we will keep writing about it. Recording what we do is tradition after all. Michael
