Three years ago, my dad Steve and I rebuilt this team from the ground up. When bringing together a group of girls from all different walks of life, many of them not knowing each other, we wanted to create an outlet for girls to continue to play soccer post college. This turned into something so much more for all of us involved over the past three years. The connection between every girl on the team has grown into a strong friendship and Sundays have become a day everyone on the team looks forward to. When starting the Fall season in 2018, you could feel the energy was different. The past two years we’ve come out on the higher end of the league, but this Fall you could feel each player WANTED to win. Our wins this year were a team effort. There was never one key player to our success. Goals were scored from multiple players, girls were always willing to play other positions when needed, and the support we provide each other during game day is truly what makes our team successful. Our league win was so
much more this year than just being good players and a good team; we won this year because of our chemistry and support for one another on and off the field. I’m so thankful for every single one of these girls choosing to play for the United German Hungarians. Michelle Paul Steve Paul, COACH: The team is a group of very talented young woman that are all very coachable, dedicated and just a lot of fun to be around. Michelle deserves all the credit for building this team and I take it over on game day. Three years ago, practically no one knew each other and now this team is a team in the true meaning of the word. We make all our decisions as a team and our process gets results. In 3 years, our league record is 27 wins, 9 losses, 9 ties. I cannot say enough good things about this group, we all get along so well which transfers to results on the field. Can’t wait for start of the season in September. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

“Not everyone gets to do something they love to do and with a group of their close friends and family,” said Nichole Blank Deely, the coach of our Gruppen Preisplatteln Team. On Sunday afternoon in Washington, DC at the Hilton she reminded us all who we are as she gestured in her own unique way to what was written on her t-shirt, “DeutschUngarn.” As a theme for the weekend of the Gaufest I think Nichole’s words ring truer than any I could have conjured up. If you were there with us you probably already understand that, and if you were not, hopefully the story that follows will give you an idea. On Wednesday, July 3rd and Thursday, July 4th our members started to make their way to Washington, DC, some by car, others by train, and a healthy sized group by bus that left from Trifecta Sporting Club. Thank you to Cindy for seeing us off and letting us leave our cars in the parking lot over the weekend. It’s a wonderful thing that no matter where we are in the world, we always know we have a home with friends in Oakford. Thursday night is sort of that meet and greet evening where everyone is finding the lay of the land, checking into hotel rooms, moving around luggage, seeing old friends and maybe making some new ones as well. This was also when our group set up and moved into what would be our home clubhouse for the weekend, our wonderfully legendary “Bullshit Room.” Let me say that the room this year was a great one! (Thanks Karen David). It was a great room because of the layout and how we put it to |

use. But really its great because of all the people we fill it with: accordion players, dancers, friends, families, Gaufest hosts, Donald Trump himself, and of course the German Hungarians. The group we had on the trip was one of the best we had in a while! Friday is the long haul. Einzel dancing drives us from dawn till dusk it feels like. We had many couples perform individual dances with members of our own club as well as with a few friends from other clubs across the country. Oh, and our children dancers put on their best and did the best job we could have asked for. They as our future certainly made every German Hungarian Proud. On Sunday when the prizes were announced we were proud that Jakob Hubert placed 2nd in age group 12-15, Janet Fricker Malofiy placed 2nd in age group 50-59, and Paul Ulrich Jr. placed 1st in age group 35-49. Saturday morning is the start of the big day. Dancing the Heitauer, group number 7 would have to put on their best performance but not before two of our members performed a wonderful dance as part of the Warm-Up Group. Kyra Malofiy and Allyssa Schulz-Fricker danced beautifully. As a club it is a feather in our cap that we have members that step up when asked to help. It’s a testament to who we are as a club that Allyssa and Kyra took part in this group and did a great job as well. Kudos also go to Alex Blank for helping to organize the group ahead of time. When it came time for our team to perform, they were ready and confident when they stepped through the hall (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

—IN THE KITCHEN WITH JENN— After a vacation filled with eating in restaurants and grabbing fast food at rest stops, nothing sounded better than pulling out my Landesverband Frauengruppe Cookbook to make one of my favorite comfort dishes, goulash. The book contains several different goulash recipes—everything from recipes using fish to venison. I chose to make Liz Tindall's (Trenton Donauschwaben) "Beef Goulash (Rindsgulasch)". Goulash got its name from the Hungarian word, “gulyás,” meaning herdsman. The dish was popular among herdsmen because they had access to the ingredients and the cooking method did not interfere with their work. The dish could be cooked in a large pot over a fire in the field and it did not require them to watch over it and stir. The same is true with Liz’s Tindall’s recipe. The prep work is minimal and it demands little attention while cooking. I chose this recipe because it is different from how I usually make the dish. Liz Tindall's Goulash is made with crushed tomatoes and finished with sour cream. The crushed tomatoes create a thick, luscious sauce as the meat cooks and becomes tender. Also, her addition of sour cream at the end gives it a creamy richness not always found in goulash. I served the goulash with Carpathia Frauengruppe’s (Carpathia Club, Detroit) “German Noodles (Spätzle)” found on

—ENTERTAINMENT— SCHEDULE Friday, August 23 German-Hungarian Night Join us along with the Saarer page 147 of the book. I have tried count- Tanzgruppe from Hungary for a great less spätzle recipes over the years and I night at the club with dancing and all always end up either adding more flour the usual fun! or liquid in order to get the consistency I want. However, Carpathia Frauengruppe’s recipe came out perfectly and can be easily doubled to feed a crowd. The spätzle was delicious on its own and even better once coated in the flavorful goulash. I look forward to making both of these recipes again. I imagine Liz Tindall’s goulash recipe would be great in a slow cooker—perfect for keeping the kitchen cool during the hot summer. And Carpathia Frauengruppe’s spätzle is now my go -to recipe. I cannot wait to make another batch and test out Julie Baker’s (Chicago Donauschwaben) Käsespatzen on page 149. Jenn Blank

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2) door and made their way on the floor. They danced like German Hungarians and made us proud in doing so. After they came off the dance floor, we gathered the ranks in the hallway outside and together shared a drink celebrating the team, and the club’s good work. Something we can easily forget is that in groups of large people that come together for a common goal, each and every person does their part. We may only put eleven players on a soccer field, or four couples on a dance floor, but the greater force of people are most definitely part of our perpetual team! On Saturday evening the parade of flags saw our colors carried majestically by Danny Galgon our Fahnentrager. Near the front of the line we cheered when our flag waived and our banners carried by Sasha Malofiy Jr., streamed out with excitement. Banquet dinner led us to dancing and fun after event parties. Sunday at the Picnic our women dressed in their new Blue Danube tracht and looked wonderful. Our larger group of dancers performed Ländler Potpourri as our Ehrentanz. When the prizes were called the German Hungarians won the Meist Prize, awarded to the club that brought the most people to the event. Once again, this year, our club took 4th place, our friends from Bayern Verein Newark, again placed 5th. The top three were, 3. SVV Original Enzian; 2. SG Edelweiss, St. Paul; 1. GTV Almrausch. Congratulations all. Christmas in July was the farewell party and Die Schlauberger rocked the house as usual. Tis the season as they say. Though results are not always in our favor, we had a wonderful time at the Gaufest in Washington, DC. Alt Washingtonia and all their members should be proud of the event they hosted. One thing is absolutely true as we look back on our weekend; The United German Hungarians, culturally and socially are strong and united and will be here and continuing proud traditions for many many years to come.
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Courtney Weidner, #8: Soccer is a game of passion, emotion, excitement and dedication. Since joining UGH three years ago, I’ve experienced all of the above. Although some games were difficult, both physically and mentally, in the end, it was worth it. After a rookie season to a season full of draws, we stopped playing for ourselves and started playing for the other 22 women wearing that jersey. With the talent and camaraderie among this group of women, nothing is unattainable. As the saying goes, “you get out what you put in” and for us that meant confidence in one another, commitment and love for the game and the sheer dedication to be nothing short of the best. Jenna Dubs, (C) #12: I enjoy playing for UGH because it’s a lot of fun to play with people that not only enjoy the sport but are genuinely good people. I joined this team not knowing anyone, and now have a group of amazing friends! Allison Barker, #2: I love playing for UGH - we are a mini family who support each other on and off the field. I am so glad I found these ladies and got to bring soccer back into my life. I look forward to Sundays when we all get together on the field! Shout out to Coach Steve and to the club for all they do to support us! Erin Casey, #23: Since joining the team 2 years ago, I’ve been able to experience how this group

of girls truly support each other and how great the team chemistry is day in and day out. My most meaningful example of how thoughtful and supportive this team is occurred when the team all signed and sent a “Get Well Soon” card to my house after I tore my ACL. All the moments like this have led to a close-knit, cohesive team that all work well together to achieve the final goal of winning the championship!! Couldn’t be more blessed to be part of such a great team. Jen South, #3: This team is a home away from home for me. I look forward to Sundays and being able to play soccer with such a wonderful group of girls and having the best fans cheering for us. We all come because we truly love the game and that really shows on the field. The connection we all have is amazing. We are at such a busy time in our lives and we are lucky enough that every single girl on this team is capable of playing pretty much any position and will give it their all. We all push each other to be the best we can be and we challenge ourselves off season. This is truly a one of a kind team and I am blessed to be a part of it and to be able to continue playing this wonderful game. EDITOR’S NOTE: Michelle put this article together with words coming from the players that did the work and won the league. As German Hungarians we are proud of our team because they continue our traditions and winning the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania is a Major Accomplishment!
