ROBOTICS ROADSHOW
Under the direction of Technology Director, Mr. Pete Farina '87, Montini Catholic is taking its knowledge of all things robotics 'on the road' and visiting local grade schools in an effort to ignite greater interest in the rising future of robotics. The 'Robotics Road Show' recently visited St. Pius X Parish School in Lombard and St. Mary of Gostyn in Downers Grove to provide an exciting, hands-on demonstrations in all things robotic! Mr. Farina diligently worked with grade school tech coordinators within the Diocese of Joliet to bring his dream of taking his robotics students on the road to showcase their abilities - and inspire future robotics enthusiasts. The presentation features a one-hour, after school visit as well as a hands-on demo. "We give a keynote about Montini Robotics followed by drone demos," informed Farina. "And then (grade school) students compete in a fun robot game where they drive robots with iPads to gather objects and earn points!" Robotics is a passion Mr. Farina has instilled in just about every one of his technology students expressing an interest in the subject. Last year, under his direction, Montini's Robotics Teams came in 2nd Place at COD's Engineering Olympics and secured two 2nd Place trophies at the Argonne Autonomous Vehicle Competition at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. In addition to hosting the road shows and gearing up for this year's robotics competitions, Farina is also busy preparing for his third annual M-TEC Technology and Engineering Competition (for grade schools) to be held at Montini on Monday, https://www.montini.org/cf_enotify/view.cfm?n=1718

Montini's growing STEM initiative introduces learning that is collaborative, project based and centered on real world problems and solutions. Increasing student experience in STEM fields is a very important part of the well-rounded academic experience at Montini Catholic. Since 2013 Montini Catholic has been developing classes and extra-curricular projects that encourage the use of creative problem solving and critical thinking. Montini Catholic's STEM initiative has a goal of creating innovative, creative, and flexible self -starters who are prepared for the changing world. The Admissions Office is excited to offer their Annual 7th Grade Step Up Day to current 7th graders who want to learn more about Montini Catholic. This is a great way to visit the school, experience high school classes and attend the Winter Formal Pep Rally. 7th graders can request a host, or the Admissions Office will pair them up with a current student based on their interests. Dress is casual and lunch is provided for all 7th graders. Last year over 100 7th graders participated in this day. If you have a 7th grader or know one who might be interested in attending, please download the registration form and submit by February 8th. Questions about the day can be directed to the Admissions Office, or you can visit the Admissions web page.

NEW CLUB CELEBRATES JOY OF READING Montini Catholic's student driven Book Club is generating an excitement for reading (and for hot tea) among its members. Senior Gabriella Lambesis is credited with spearheading and organizing the club. "I read a lot of books over the summer, but during the school year, homework and extracurriculars seem to get in the way of reading," she said. "I really wanted to read more during the school year, and I felt that Book Club would allow me to do that." Each month, club members decide on 'a book of the month' and meet twice during that month to discuss. The Book Club is moderated by English Department Chair, Mrs. Pittenger, who supplements the meetings with hot tea served in teacups. Click here to read more about the Book Club. The Book Club has already read: A Simple Favor, Amityville Horror, The Orient Express, Perks of Being a Wallflower and A Darker Shade of Magic.
