Dear Alumni and Friends, is issue of Bronco Express is a very special one. Not only do we focus on the wonderful things our students are doing in service to their communities, but we are also featuring the stories of several of our alumni who are also living their faith by serving their fellow man. Alumni Nancy (Kuster) Economou ‘84 and brother, Kevin‘86 started Watts For Love to provide solar lighting to our brothers and sisters, living in poverty, around the world. ey most recently brought their lighting to aid Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas (page 8), and at press time, they were in Puerto Rico supporting victims of Hurricane Rita. Service and generosity to those in need are hallmarks of our Lasallian heritage. I think you will find this issue quite inspiring. Also in this issue, is an updated report on our Annual Fund. We are extremely grateful to our loyal donors. anks to their goodwill, they are helping to “write the stories” of our current Broncos. Below is just one of these stories in a letter from student, Ivan Felty. After his freshman year at Montini, Ivan’s family was unsure if they would be able to continue to financially support his Lasallian education. By having access our Financial Aid Program, funded by the compassion of our Annual Fund donors, Ivan is now enjoying his senior year here at Montini. ni Catholic “I am proud to say that I have been very involved at Monti It’s been a since my freshman year. an advocate fighting hunger means more than just giving food. is is simply a temporary band-aid to a much larger problem. Without fundamental change, the cycle of hunger and poverty will continue. I was motivated by the conviction to help my new friends realize that there are alternatives - there can be change. My answer came through an ad I saw for Bread for the World’s Hunger Justice Leaders’ Training Conference. rough exploring their mission, I was introduced to the idea of Christians lobbying in Congress, and in my case, with various government officials in Mexico as well as other organizations with the same mission. I felt a strong sense of empowerment when talking with others who shared by passion. As I went to meeting after meeting, talk after talk, the faces of the children in Mexico came alive as I talked about poverty. What fueled this issue of hunger for me was not the posters of starving children or statistics on poverty, but the people I met - the friends I had made - in Mexico.

It was during a brief time spent in Mexico when Montini’s Campus Minister, Mike Blanchette, was inspired to pursue his greatest mission of motivating Christians to “actively” live out their faith. Here are his words on how he became a proponent of service to others.

I spent three years, 2000-2003, in Mexico working with children of single moms. Working with these kids really changed my life in unexpected ways. I went with the mentality that I was in Mexico to serve them and to change their lives. But, in the end, it was my life that Mike with Montini students and chaperones during the school’s third trip to the Garbage was forever changed. I was inspired to bring this conviction and need for change closer to home in the work that I began doing when I returned back to the states. Poverty, hunger and homelessness have become an accepted reality in the states. But, even here, change can happen.

CHOREOGRAPHS STAGE RENOVATION

It was a passion for all things theater that drove junior, Andrew Ernat to choose his Eagle Scout project this past summer. Andrew took on the ambitious project of replacing Montini's existing wooden stage extension with a sturdier, more modular design. "As part of Montini eater and Set Crew, I knew firsthand that the old stage extension was in need of repairing," said Andrew. "I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do for my Eagle Scout Project."

“Montini is honored that Andrew chose to help us with our stage for his Eagle Scout project,” said President Segredo. “He is an inspiration to us all. He saw a need and had the passion to come up with a solution and to see it through!” Photo above: (Clockwise from front - Andrew, Rebecca, Matt and Sarah Ernat)

BOOSTERS HARNESS NEW MASCOT! e Montini Booster Club, under the direction of President, Dan Laughlin ’86, launched a search for students wanting to showcase their talents and school spirit as our Bronco Mascot for the fall, winter and spring sports seasons. e Boosters sponsored a scholarship with funds payable towards tuition in order to “rein” in new talent. (e position became vacant after the graduation of 4-year veteran, Matthew Ernat‘16.) “e support from our students was quite enthusiastic,” said Dan. “We decided we needed to hold a tryout!” In the end, two students stood out above the rest and will split Bronco duties this school year. While we asked the Bronco Mascots if they would like to reveal their identities they wish to keep it a mystery. We can assure you, however, that the Bronco is alive and well and will be seen at school and sporting events in the future.

Gettin’ the band

back together

Our Band of Broncos played their first halftime show 46 years ago in 1971! After marching into the sunset in the late 1980s, Montini’s ‘new’ band once again marched right into the spotlight at Duffy Memorial Stadium on Homecoming Night! Under the direction of Matthew Loeb and Belford Hernandez the group delighted Bronco fans as they played the “Star Spangled Banner” at kick-off and performed the hits of Queen during an impressive halftime show!

Andrew’s sister, rebecca '13, brother Matthew '16 and sister Sarah ’22, were all very happy to be able to help their brother carry out his plans for the stage. Steve Santay '07 was also ready and willing to lend a hand." Santay was very involved with the arts during his years at Montini.

are living their faith and

making a difference for our brothers and sisters all over the world and most recently in Texas. Fall 2017

We reached out to alumna Nancy (Kuster) Economou ‘84 to learn more about Watts of Love, the global solar lighting organization she founded alongside her husband and brother. Currently, more than 1 billion people live without access to electricity. Watts of Love is a non-profit based in Downers Grove whose mission is to elevate the lives of people who live in darkness by providing solar lighting and education to those living in extreme poverty. Watts of Love operates all around the world with focus areas in the Philippines, Haiti, Guatemala, Nepal and Mozambique. Nancy and her team most recently mobilized to address disaster relief after Hurricane Harvey hit, delivering lighting to communities without power in Texas.

What initiated your decision to go to corpus christi? Taking a team to Corpus Christi immediately after Hurricane Harvey was the first time we’ve focused on American soil. Watts of Love is truly a global organization. We take volunteer travel teams out into remote areas to reach people living in ultra-poverty. If we give them a light, families no longer have to depend on expensive dangerous kerosene lamps, which means they can build a better financial future. However, we have always focused on these global areas because America already has electricity. When Harvey hit, we were uniquely positioned to aid in disaster relief. at’s very important to us and we were honored to serve. We don’t typically work in America because we try to be very intentional about pro-

viding solar lighting to the least of these. at philosophy of serving the least very much guided our decisions about where to provide lights in Corpus Christi. What was your goal in going? Simply put, we try to seek out people with the most need. at’s our goal. When we loaded up with lights and headed down to Texas, we agreed to focus on areas getting the least attention. Our team was there for four days. We gave lights to search and rescue workers first, but then we started sending teams of volunteers out to devastated neighborhoods. For us, that meant walking through trailer parks where there was hardly anything left standing and people were sheltering there in the rubble.

“When Harvey hit, we were uniquely positioned to aid in disaster relief. at’s very important to us and we were honored to serve.” can you share a memorable experience with an individual or family you helped? I clearly recall one family. eir home was just devastated. When we arrived, they were huddling under tarps under trees. It appeared several generations had been living together. Another volunteer from somewhere was pulling away after dropping off some food items. at volunteer shouted to us, “Unless you’ve got candles, they don’t need anything else.” We all just looked at each other in disbelief. We had something even better than candles! A lot of people tend to think in term of food or even water, but lighting doesn’t get as much attention. Giving this light helps with personal security.

In terms of our global trips, we are always taking volunteer teams out in the field. Anyone who wants to join and serve this way (and is up for adventure!) simply needs to check out our web site or call us. It’s life-changing work. Personally, as the mother of five boys, my family is right on the front lines of all our work. We do this together. It’s so beautiful to see how their friends and lots of young WATTS FOR LOVE continued on page 10

Montini alumni are living their faith in service everyday . . . here are just a few: BRITTANY’S TREES –

Montini alumnus, Jim Guthrie ‘88, established Brittany’s Trees in 2005. Each Christmas, Jim and his team deliver beautifully lit Christmas trees to participating homes - all in the memory of neighbor, Brittany Valene, who died of complications of Long QT Syndrome (a rare heart disease) at the age of eight. “When Brittany died, I wanted to do something for the family,” said Jim, who had no experiJim Guthrie ‘88 and daughters. ence beforehand in embarking on a charity project. “My idea was to put a lit tree in everyone’s front yard with all proceeds going toward the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS) Foundation.” He added, “Brittany was a charismatic girl who was like a big sister to my three girls and she deserved to be remembered in a special way. I'm blown away how much this has grown. We have 150-200 people show up on Saturday after Thanksgiving to help deliver trees. Today, over 2,000 families know Brittany's story. We have become the biggest contributor to the SADS Foundation!” (In 2005 Jim delivered and set up 22 trees, last year the number of trees ordered reached 2,020!) Jim has been very humbled to have been featured on FOX News, WGN and EPSN radio. His most cherished memory? “I’d have to say the first year we did this. Brittany’s mom didn’t know what we were up to, she saw the tree in her yard and when I explained what it was for she was overcome with emotion. That’s a day I’ll never forget.” Jim is currently in the midst of his 13th season of Brittany’s Trees! (www.brittanys-trees.com)

EISENHOWER COOPERATIVE – Katie (Laurinaitis) Modglin ‘04 is a special education teacher and Eisenhower Cooperative representative. The school provides quality programs and services to students with disabilities and services 170 students with mental and cognitive disabilities, behavior disabilities as well as students who are hard of hearing and/or deaf. Each year Katie works with Montini students as they donate food baskets from the Golden Gobbler Food Drive, as well as Christmas gifts and much needed items to co-op families via the Adopt-A-Family program. Last spring our students worked with Katie to deliver 50 Easter baskets to her students!

MOVE OVER ILLINOIS – In 2014, Kate (Styczynski) Olchawa ‘04 founded Move Over Illinois to spread awareness for the Move Over Law, aka Scott’s Law, which requires motorists to move over a lane, if possible, and slow down for all emergency, maintenance, and tow vehicles with flashing or oscillating lights. In 2017, an amendment to the law requires the same action to be taken for stranded or disabled vehicles with flashing hazard lights. As the wife of a State Trooper, Kate was inspired to spread awareness to save lives. (moveoverillinois.org)

How did you pull a team together so quickly? Volunteers, friends, supporters, everyone was texting as the hurricane was bearing down. It was just a matter of figuring out how to get lights down there. Although we were a lean group on such short notice, our team consisted of my brother Kevin Kuster (Montini graduate 1986) and two of our board members, Diane Butler and Tim Campbell. As soon as we confirmed a good local partner in Corpus Christi, we took off as quickly as we could.

people are getting involved. We try to make this work accessible to everyone who has a heart for it. What are the logistics involved with a response like this? We always seek out local partners first whether it’s here or in Nepal. We saw Houston was getting more attention and resources, which was why we intentionally chose to be based out of Rockport, near Corpus Christi. We found a local partner to help us there. American Airlines Cargo graciously agreed to fly our lights down to Houston. AA Cargo has become such an incredible partner and ally to Watts of Love. What are your next steps? Right on the heels of Hurricane Harvey, came Hurricane Irma and Maria. Now we are looking at the Caribbean and figuring out where we can best serve amid all the devastation. e need is tremendous, but we will still rely on that guiding philosophy of seeking out the areas of greatest need. We’ve committed to distributing 2000 lights in total for hurricane relief, now it’s a matter of surveying where we’re most needed and deploying.

What advice would you give to young (and older) people today who are trying to find their calling in life? As a mother and a global citizen, I can say that is it critical for young people to have opportunities to serve and to see outside their own world view. Try not to be content with the status quo. ere is more to life than our surroundings. Keep pursuing those passions and nudges and following them. It doesn’t have to be anything big and complicated - there’s nothing wrong with doing simple things. However, I do believe parents are the best role models for kids. We can expose them to different forms of service and give them plenty of opportunities to discern their callings. For more information on Watts of Love or to donate, visit www.wattsoflove.org

BRONCO SPORTS UPDATES AT H L E T I C S

ANNUAL CHARITY GAME PAYS TRIBUTE TO johnny weiger

Christian Pirog

Walking into Duffy Memorial Stadium was no ordinary game night experience on Friday, September 8th. Bronco fans were met with a field of orange balloons, all in the memory of former student and football player, Johnathan "Johnny" Weiger. It was Montini's annual Charity Game (vs. Fenwick) with this year's chosen charity, the Johnny Always Wins (JAW) Foundation. e non-profit organization was founded by the Weiger Family to support Pediatric Adolescent Leukemia Support (PALS), and inspired by their son.

Bronco and Friar fans were given the opportunity to donate to this worthy cause by purchasing a balloon to be released in unison before the game. ere were orange balloons on both sides of the stadium. Members of both football teams were also given balloons to release.

e Weiger Family also presented their 5th Annual "Spirit of '76" Award in memory of Johnny to senior Rian O'Connor. e award is given to the player who best embodies one of great character faith and sportsmanship. e family was joined on the field by previous award winners, Alexander Melarkey '14, Sam Asta '15 and Sam Detmers '16 (last year's winner Brendan Rauen ‘17 was unable to attend.). O'Connor walked out onto the field and humbly accepted the award. Sam Asta then spoke about his friend and fellow teammate, Johnny Weiger. On his cue, the balloons were released into the air to cheers and clapping. "We sincerely thank our Fenwick friends for helping us celebrate everything Johnny stood for," said President Segredo, "It truly was a great night to be a Bronco." Fall 20172017 Summer

Iowa Hawkeyes

Broncos!

Congratulations to junior Joslyn Boyer for her commitment to join the University of Iowa's Volleyball Program. Joslyn is looking forward to becoming a Hawkeye in the fall of 2019. "I felt very comfortable with the academic environment and the services offered to students at Iowa," says Joslyn. "It is a place where I can do really well in the classroom. Also it's a Big Ten school! B1G Volleyball is the best in the country. I want to play against the best and at the highest level possible." She currently plans to go to the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa, but is still discerning her many options. "Marketing seems to be a good fit for my personality," she said. “I can’t wait to put on the black and gold!” (Photo: Joslyn with Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach, Steve Dowjotas)

"My Bronco teammates mean the world to me. I could go on and on about them," said Stanford Cardinals Congratulations to senior wrestler real Woods who will become a Stanford Cardinal next fall! Real is also a member of Montini’s Honor Society and Men's Choir, and has been honing his wrestling skills since the ripe age of seven. "My passion is wrestling," he said. "I am inspired by the way that the determination, dedication and discipline required to succeed in wrestling directly transitions into everyday life." Real makes Bronco headlines every season. Achieving CCL All Conference and Academic All Conference status every year, he most recently brought home an individual state championship title at the IHSA Individual Meet last winter, making this his second Illinois state title. He was also on the Cadet World Team last year for Greco-Roman. Real has also won three Cheesehead titles, a preseason Nationals title, and placed three times at Ironman! Way to go, Real! (Photo: Real with Athletic Director, Tom Lentine)

Wake Forest Demon Deacons Congratulations to senior Lindsey Jarosinski for her commitment to play Division 1 college basketball and joining Wake Forest University's Basketball Program. e Bronco powerhouse is looking forward to becoming a Demon Deacon in the fall of 2018. Montini's 6'5" Center has been rebounding and shooting since she was eight years old. Getting an early start on her basketball career has earned her three impressive All Conference titles so far during her time as a Bronco. Her average of 9.2 points a game was a vital factor in the Broncos' third place (Class 4A) finish last season. Lindsey hopes to major in Environmental Science/Biology at Wake Forest. "I really want to be challenged in college,"she said, adding, "Montini is preparing me for college with advanced academics and holding me to a high standard of character." Good luck at Wake Forest, Lindsey!

LEWAN - CADET FREESTYLE WORLD CHAMPION! Dylan won the USA World team trials for Greco-Roman. He was also able to capture both a Freestyle and Greco-Roman National title at the USA National Championship this summer.
