We also recognized the many achievements of our students, clubs and teams. As we researched our history, the Lasallian mission of service to the poor was a constant theme. I am proud to say that our students and staff continue to see that this tradition thrives. In this issue, you will read about several service projects that our students have been involved in as well as stories of student, club and team success during the spring of this past school year.

We are especially proud of the academic success of our graduating seniors, the Class of 2016, who garnered over $15 million in academic scholarships and grants. e amount is close to $23 million dollars when athletic scholarships are added into the equation. Over the last three years, over $40 million dollars have been earned in academic scholarships and grants ($65 million with athletic scholarships). Under the direction of our Campus Minister, Mr. Michael Blanchette, we are also very proud to have once again sponsored an international community service trip to Nicaragua, building homes for single parents living in the Garbage Dump area of the country (pages 8-9). I am also very happy to report great news on the academic and enrollment front. We enter this 2016-17 school year with a very healthy enrollment of over 660 students which includes an incoming freshmen class (Class of 2020) of 171 young men and women. Once again Montini Catholic ranked as one of the top schools in Illinois in Advanced Placement Testing. is year 161 Advanced Placement Tests were taken by 104 students. Forty perfect scores of 5 were recorded which exceeds the outstanding number of thirty-five perfect 5’s in 2015 and in 2014. Twentysix of the 104 test takers were named Advanced Placement Scholars, 73% of the 104 test takers earned college credit by scoring a 3 or better. Overall, MCHS student scores, on average, were a half a point higher than the national and state averages for Advanced Placement Testing in 2016. Congratulations to our Advanced Placement teachers and students. It was with great pride and much appreciation that we honored families and individuals for their outstanding service and support to Montini Catholic at our 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 4th (pages 12-13). It was a wonderful evening. My sincere appreciation goes to Marcella Raymond ‘83 for serving as our Mistress of Ceremonies. She also created an outstanding video recapping our 50 year history which was one of many highlights of the evening. As we move into our 51st year of Catholic, Lasallian education, Montini Catholic is strong and in a very good position to continue for another 50 years. My sincere appreciation to all of you for your support and generosity and, as always, “May Jesus Live In Our Hearts…Forever.”

e lazy days of summer haven’t been too lazy for sophomore Ian Kwit who has been hard at work planning and managing a special garden project honoring our Blessed Mother. e area, located in the school’s courtyard area, will also serve as a memorial garden for students who have passed away during their time at Montini. is charitable project is part of Ian’s Eagle Scout service project which provides an opportunity for a scout to demonstrate leadership skills while performing a project for the benefit of his community. “e purpose of enhancing this garden is for current students to reflect on others who came before them and left their mark on Montini,” explained Ian, who has ambitiously planned a garden of flowers, a retaining wall, and a paved walkway complete with solar lighting, engraved bricks and a stone cross. mission to haiti inspires senior Colin Frank spent his summer as a volunteer with the Side by Side for Christ Foundation serving at the Village of Hope in Haiti. Colin was tasked with helping to raise thousands of dollars so that he and other volunteers could purchase airfare and supplies to bring to the poorest people in Haiti. Among the most needed supplies for Haitians, many still homeless without basic needs such as electricity and clean water, were basic school supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, diapers, even aspirin and Advil.
Senior Jack Westerkamp participated in a Procession of Flags from 34 countries during Cultural Awareness Week.
Students embrace
diversity Students proudly embraced their diversity during Cultural Awareness Week in April. the annual celebration, sponsored by the school's Foreign Language Department, began with a special allschool liturgy and welcomed Father Alex Ajacor, Associate Pastor of St. Leonard Catholic Church in Berwyn. "Love god and love your neighbor. that is the simplest message we an take away from our celebration of Cultural Awareness Week," said Father Ajacor during his homily. "the only thing you take with you to your death is the love you gave away during your life."
“e Village of Hope is a Christian organization dedicated to bringing education, spiritual growth, and primary health care to the people of Haiti who are so much in need of this all. I helped at an orphanage one day; for these poor children there, the conditions they experienced each day were just terrible,” Colin said. His team of volunteers was tasked with remodeling three storage and utility rooms within the compound. ey built three new rooms to be used by the Haitians who are serviced there, including building new walls and ceilings for each. “ere was no air conditioning,” explained Colin. “e rooms were all over 100 degrees. To get the work done, we stared at 6:00 a.m. and often worked until well after midnight.” e team also visited two local Haitian schools and handed out school supplies. ey also made sandwiches for the Haitian students and played games. “is trip opened my eyes to the poverty and suffering all throughout Haiti and has made a lifelong impact on me,” said Colin. “We’ve all watched this young man give his heart and soul to helping others all throughout his time here at Montini,” said Assistant Principal Dr. Michael Kisicki. “What he did for others under the sweltering sun of Haiti is just so typically ‘Colin’ we are all very proud of him.”

M
ontini Catholic held a very special commissioning Mass on June 8th, themed “e Work Is Yours,” for the students and chaperones preparing for Montini’s second mission trip to Granada, Nicaragua. Under the leadership of Campus Minister Michael Blanchette, Montini students once again teamed up with International Samaritan for this life-changing endeavor. “is evening we gather to remember the passion and devotion of our founder, St. John Baptiste De La Salle,” said Father Jeff Stoneberg of Christ the King Parish. “For him, service was not just a word, it was the ultimate expression of love. May it be so as we go forth to serve in Nicaragua.” 8

Nine brave students along with three chaperones began their week long mission on Sunday, June 27th (returning on July 3). e team visited the LaJoya Garbage Dump on their first day. e dump is an area where the poor are able to earn about $2.00 per day by collecting and selling recyclables. Workers gather the items in large bags, then carry to a recycling center which is nearly 2 kilometers away. “More than 30 vultures circled above the dump,” observed chaperone Maureen O’Neill. “Cows and wild dogs scavenge the heap alongside the people as the garbage was thrown out to the waiting pickers.” e group’s mission this year, like last, was to help build homes for the workers and their families who currently live in shanties.
“e cinder block and concrete homes are constructed in five weeks,” said Blanchette, whose team helped during the 2nd week of construction. “Our main tasks were assembling rebar supports for the foundation and walls, leveling trenches for the foundations and mixing concrete.” It was not all manual labor for the entire week, however. e students were greeted with smiles and hugs when they had the honor of visiting the family whose home they helped build last year. ey also found it very rewarding to help tutor 20 boys who are living in a group home due to abuse or behavioral problems. ey spent alot of time playing with the boys who loved soccer and “being silly.” MOntInI.Org
Blanchette and the team stayed at the Tepeyac Retreat House which was also a home for retired nuns. Each morning began with a prayer and each evening ended with prayer and a reflection of the day’s events. “Upon their return from Nicaragua, the students agreed that they were very changed from their unique experience," said Blanchette. “ey have become more aware of how others live in the world and it challenges us to be more conscious of living simply so that those who are in need can have more. It reminds us all of what is important in life." is year the team attempted to blog daily about their experiences to update their family and friends of their ventures. "We were happy that our friends and supporters back home were able to keep up with us on a daily basis this year," said Blanchette. "e students were very excited to be able to share their thoughts on their experience." Montini Catholic is very proud to be globally expanding its service learning program. According to International Samaritan, volunteers such as the students at Montini Catholic not only lend physical and educational support to their missions, but more importantly, they bring hope to the people they serve.
“I hope to learn to be more grateful and appreciative of all the blessings I have in my life, even for basic needs such as food, water and shelter.” – Veet Zaveri
“The living conditions in Nicaragua make me realize that I take a lot of things for granted, for example fresh water, a home with air conditioning, having a mattress to sleep on. I feel bad about never taking the time to appreciate these things.” – Lainey Nielson ‘17
“I wanted to be a part of this mission trip because I feel like it will be a life changing experience, and in this world that we live in right now, we should start to take notice that not everyone has what we have in the United States.” – Daniela Torres ‘17
“I hope to learn about the true meaning of teamwork. We all use teamwork at certain times in our lives. Building a house can seem like a daunting task, and we are going to need to communicate better than we ever have.” – Gustavo Sanchez ‘18

e Lady Bronco softball team ended their historic season on a high note by capturing the IHSA Class 3A State Championship in Peoria on June 11th, in the program's first ever trip to the IHSA State Tournament. e Broncos set numerous records over the course of the season including the best season record in school history at 37-3. Before their journey through the state playoffs, the girls also captured the GCAC Championship in only their first year of participating in the prestigious league. Coach Bukovsky credited the great leadership and focus of senior captains Bell Alexander, Amy Bukovsky, Courtney Kline, Emily Lezcano, Alyssa sclafani and Frankie sikora for the team’s outstanding season, but was quick to note that their success was truly a total team effort! In addition to the seniors’ leadership, Brianna Clifton and Naomi Alonzo provided outstanding pitching, and Nikki Cuchran led the potent Bronco's offense. Lauren Latoria, Emily Alexander, Alyssa Filkowski, and serena Almodovar contributed with great speed for defense, and Tia sondej, Jena Almodovar, and sam Ferruzza rounded out the Bronco's all important depth. e team smashed virtually every Montini hitting and pitching school record along the way and dented the IHSA record book as well. e 37 win season was one of the top win totals in the State of all time. e team marks of 444 hits and 332 Runs Batted In were also among the best showings in IHSA history. e Lady Broncos slugged 58 homeruns this season, giving them the 5th highest total ever recorded by an IHSA Team! Needless to say, the 2016 softball season was an electrifying, record breaking campaign, from start to finish! e "W" Flag will be flying high all winter long, until the Lady Broncos begin their quest for a repeat State Championship next Spring!

"is is truly a joyous and significant event. Not only do I thank you for your support this evening, but I also thank the thousands of members of our school community, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, friends and benefactors who have supported our school through their generosity and sacrifice of time and treasures over the last fifty years," said Jim Segredo as he welcomed over 500 guests to the school's historic event. "Over the last 50 years, the campus, technology, academic programs, social events and styles have changed, but two things have remained consistent - our mission of education and the good fortune to have dedicated and talented individuals teach, lead and coach our students." Segredo also credited the De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Diocese of Joliet for their role in the success of the high school. "Together they brought Montini Catholic to the Lombard area in 1966 and their support has never wavered over the last 50 years," he said. Principal Maryann O'Neill, who celebrated her 30th year of service at Montini, and was one of three recipients of Montini Catholic's Leadership Award during the evening, also addressed the guests and talked with pride about Montini's mission of 'touching hearts.' "It is that sense of caring that has kept me here these last three decades. It is a feeling that permeates the halls. As you walk the building, you meet the faces of our students captured in the photographs that adorn the walls and see the numerous trophies, both athletic and academic that fill our trophy cases. Just like your home, we display our family pictures and proudly exhibit the awards our students have earned."
