Summer 2018
“It has been a great year for our students and school community with a number of success stories.” - Jim Segredo, President
Dear Alumni and Friends, e 52nd school year at has come to an end, and it has been a great year for our students and school community with a number of success stories. Academically, I am very proud to announce that the 177 members of the class of 2018 received over $20 million dollars in academic scholarship offers. When you add the Division I and Division II athletic scholarships offered, our class of 2018 received over $22 million dollars in scholarship offers. We are certainly very proud and wish our graduates nothing but the best as they go on to prestigious universities including Stanford, Northwestern, Southern California, Illinois, Michigan, Wake Forest, the United States Naval Academy, IIT as well as many other fine universities in the midwest and throughout our country. Our spring teams added to the success of our athletic program this year with conference championships in Girls Soccer and Boys Baseball and several regional and sectional championships. Many teams and individuals qualified and placed in IHSA state championships. e icing on the cake, however, were the state championships won by our Rugby and Softball Teams. Congratulations to coaches Mike Size ‘09 and Mike Bukovsky ‘83 and their teams (pages 10 and 11). I am happy to report that our school Math Team, under the leadership of Mrs. Chrissy McManus ‘88, once again qualified for the ICTM State Championship. ey have qualified now for a total of 17 consecutive years and placed in the top ten in class 2A for 15 consecutive years. Our team was also the highest scoring Catholic team in Class 2A (page 6). Not to be outdone, our Robotics Team, coached by Mr. Pete Farina ‘87, is quickly being recognized as a force to be reckoned with after their successes this year at the Joliet Junior College and College of DuPage robotics competitions as well as their success at the Argonne National Laboratory Robotics Challenge (page 5). I am also very proud of the students who are continuing our tradition of summer missions by working with Habitat for Humanity and, this year, traveling to Jamaica with International Samaritan. e affects of these unique missions are positive and life changing for our students. I wish you could be with us during Masses when our students talk about their experiences and the people they meet. eir testimonies are very moving and inspiring. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Campus Minister Mike Blanchette and all the members of our faculty and staff who volunteer their time over the summer to join our students for these crucial service projects. e new school year is quickly approaching and we look forward to the leadership of Mr. Kevin Beirne, who will begin his first year as principal of Montini. Kevin has been meeting with faculty, staff and students over the summer and I am very excited about his vision for our school. I am positive that he will continue the standard of excellence in our academic, extracurricular, spiritual and community service programs. I hope to see you at our Bronco Classic Golf Outing on August 10th, the Hall of Fame Game on September 7th, Homecoming on September 21 and at Harvest Moon Howl (featuring 7th Heaven), on Saturday, October 20th. As always, my sincere appreciation to all the members of the Montini Catholic community for all of your support and generosity to our students. "May Jesus Live In Your Hearts . . . Forever." Sincerely
Jim Segredo, President

We are
humanitarians Nine selfless Broncos went from hitting the books to hitting the nails when they spent their spring break serving others with Habitat for Humanity in Ohio. We are so proud of our students who spent their Spring Break week serving in the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge program. e “Habitat veterans” who also made the trip last year were: Ben Kirch, Emeka Nkuku, Jake Oostdyk, and Marissa VanDeVeer. ey were joined by first-timers Nicole Dallas, Kaitlin Donaldson, Raquel Dorado, Ben Gruthoff and Kailey Ryan. e students were accompanied by teachers Mr. Denis Block and Mrs. Hilda Castor.
“Even though it rained for three of the four work days, the group was still able to get a lot accomplished,” said Mr. Block. “Habitat provided our group with amazing contractors and employees to help us out.”
is is the second year Montini has gone to Southeast Ohio for the Spring Break Habitat for Humanity trip. eir vision - a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio has empowered 85 families to achieve their dreams of home ownership and break the cycle of poverty through their home ownership program. eir homes are sold with zero-interest mortgages to local low-income families who contribute 250 hours of “sweat equity” toward Habitat projects. Mortgage principal payments are recycled back to build or renovate additional homes through their Fund for Humanity. “We really hope to continue this relationship in the future,” said Mr. Block.

For more than 25 years, Habitat has provided school break volunteer opportunities to high school and college students. Since this program began in the late '80s, more than 250,000 have committed to building safe, affordable homes across the United States. Montini volunteers learned about substandard living conditions and how affordable housing builds strength, stability and self-reliance for homeowners.

Junior KELAN SCOTT ACCEPTED INTO FERMILAB'S 2018 TARGET PROGRAM
C
ongratulations to Kelan Scott ‘19 upon his acceptance into Fermilab's 2018 Target Program. Hundreds of high school students apply for this opportunity and only a maximum of 25 are accepted each summer.
"I have always been interested in the sciences, especially physics," said Kelan, who plans on majoring in kinesiology (the study of the mechanics of body movements) and minoring in African American History. (His goal is to become a Cardiothoracic surgeon.)
A graduate of St. Mary of Gostyn School in Downers Grove, Kelan says his inspiration to explore the healthcare field came from his parents (Mark and Ne'woka Stitt-Scott) and siblings. "Ever since I was little I knew that I wanted to get into the healthcare field, but I wasn’t so sure which specific field I wanted to go to. As I got older I was able to see all of the different paths of medicine that I could go in to, but surgery spoke out to me the most," he said. "My parents are really stoked about me going into this internship," he said. "ey know that this is a great opportunity for me and can help me in my journey into the medical field." Kelan has been a very active student at Montini. In addition to looking forward to the education and adventure that awaits him at Fermilab this summer, Kelan is looking forward to his senior year at Montini and beyond.

e TARGET Program is a highly competitive, paid, six-week summer internship opportunity for Illinois high school sophomores and juniors who have strong interest and demonstrated aptitude for physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering. e program’s goals are to encourage high school students to undertake college study and pursue careers in STEM disciplines, and its design combines both work and hands-on experiential learning. Kelan first learned about the unique Fermilab opportunity through a mentorship program he is involved in, called the I Am Abel Foundation. "e program is for young, future doctors," he explained. "Students get the chance to have a doctor as their mentor throughout their educational years, up until the time they actually become doctors."
Kelan will be very busy during his time at Fermilab. "In the mornings I will be working in the lab with the scientists, so I will basically become one of the staff members, helping out with experiments," he said. "In the afternoon I will be in a STEM class that is designed to teach interns more about the science part of the Fermilab."
Students and staff honored Mr. Kevin Beirne as this year’s recipient of the Lasallian Educators Award. e award was presented during Founder’s Day this year. e award is presented to an individual that has lived the charism of the school's founder, John Baptist de LaSalle. "at is to provide a human and Christian education to those entrusted to our care through the process of touching hearts," explained President Segredo. Mr. Beirne celebrates ten years as a faculty member at Montini and will become principal beginning with the 2018-19 school year.

Montini said farewell to 177 seniors on Sunday, May 20th at their 49th annual Baccalaureate Mass & Commencement. e Mass was presided over by Rev. John Belmonte, S.J., Ph.D., Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Joliet. "On this great day, we give God glory," he said as he welcomed graduates and their families. "It is time to go and set the world on fire. Take the divine flame of faith into the far corners of the world!" Valedictorian Monica Oleski’s address was followed by a call to worship on what was Pentecost Sunday. At the conclusion of Mass, Father Belmonte presented Principal O'Neill with a special, vintage prayer card depicting St. John Baptist de La Salle, to commemorate her last graduation ceremony as the school's principal. A tearful Mrs. O'Neill received a rousing applause and standing ovation from students and families. "Parents, four years ago, you brought your children to us," said Principal Maryann "O'Neill "Today, we return to you young, Lasallian adults who are more than ready for the next step in their journey."
Tradition lives on Once again we asked our alumni to share their thoughts on having their own son or daughter walk across the stage this year at graduation as they once did. BILL BARRETT ‘79 Maura Barrett ‘18
Montini alumnus, Bill Barrett ‘79, with children, Brianne Barrett '09, Packey Barrett '12, Maura Barrett '18 and wife, Stella Barrett.
Having our 3rd and final child graduate from Montini just seems natural. My oldest sister entered Montini in 1968, so with Maura’s graduation, the school has been in our family for 50 years! My wife Stella and I feel we did the best we could for our kids by sending them to Montini. Having them there during the O’neill Era was an added bonus. I’ve been through Montini’s doors thousands of times. It was bittersweet walking out after Maura’s graduation, but we’ll always be a part of each other’s family.

It was amazing to hear Luke’s name called like mine was 34 years earlier. He wanted to attend Montini since he was a small child and he made his dream come true. He wanted to play for his heroes, Coach Andriano and his uncle Mike. His road was much harder than mine, and he sacrificed more than I ever could have. The long rides, the early practices, going to a school where you don't know anybody. In the end it was worth it for him to become the young man he is now. I couldn't be more proud. As a parent you want to give your children the same or better opportunities that you enjoyed. The Montini Catholic education is a gift. One that will pay dividends for a lifetime.
Montini has always been a special place for myself and my family. The Christian Brother philosophy of education for everyone and that all should be treated equally as God’s children, was the reason that I attended Montini and chose Montini for my children as well. A Montini education which includes being part of a family, serves as a terrific foundation in the formation of our young people. The real world can be very cruel and challenging in many ways. Every return visit that I made to Montini after my graduation was a constant reminder of what christian morals, values, and traditions we cherish as christians and Catholics.
As I reflect upon my years at Montini and why I chose to send my children here, one word comes to mind - family. I want them to experience that same feeling of community while they are here and long afterwards. I know that my children are being taken care of by, not only the faculty and staff, but other students’ parents as well. Montini does an excellent job of developing a caring community that seeks to develop the whole individual. It is not all about athletics, academics, and stewardship, but a combination of all three. To this day I remain close with so many of my classmates, and I am grateful for lifelong friendships.
We sincerely thank all of our legacy families for entrusting us to their childrens’ education. A complete list of legacy students and their alumni parents, including those graduating, can be found on pages 14 and 15.
