A MESSAGE
FROM THE
Dear Alumni and Friends,
PRESIDENT
s we approach the end of the 2014-15 school year, I am happy to report that our 49th year of education has been one of our best marked with much excitement over the success of our school-wide Digital Learning Initiative. I am also proud of the academic achievements of our students and the many awards earned in our extracurricular programs.
A
We will enter our 50th Year of Lasallian, Catholic Education in August with great momentum. Presently, over $17 million dollars has been awarded in scholarships and academic grants to the 165 members of our Class of 2015. Over the last four years, our graduating seniors have earned over $55 million dollars in academic scholarships and grants. This amount does not include the many athletic scholarships that have been offered.
This year we celebrated our Math Team’s highest finish in the ICTM 2A State Championship - 3rd out of 51 schools. This accomplishment distinguished Montini Catholic as the highest scoring Catholic high school in the ICTM Class 2A state competition. In addition, our Robotics Team, in its first year of competition, placed 1st in the College of DuPage Engineering Olympics.
We also celebrated a terrific year athletically, with an IHSA state championship in wrestling, a 2nd place state finish in football, and a 3rd place finish in girls basketball. Our girls volleyball team’s first visit downstate won them a 4th place trophy. The boys and girls cross country teams and the cheerleading team also made appearances downstate. The Broncettes repeated as TDI state champions in Pom, and we made IHSA history by having two students, Amy Bukovsky and Jack Westerkamp, win the Class 3A female and male IHSA 3point shooting contests. Our spring sports season, as of this writing, is still ongoing and we expect that our teams will also experience much success.
I am very proud to announce that as of this writing, 9 out of our 11 IHSA fall and winter sport teams have earned the IHSA All-Academic Team recognition for the 2014-15 school year. The teams maintained an accumulative grade point average of 3.0+ during their seasons. In addition, 46 varsity athletes achieved the IHSA Scholastic Recognition Award for maintaining a 3.5+ GPA on a 4.0 scale.
As we approach our 50th Anniversary school year, please save the date of June 4, 2016 for our 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace. Our 2015-16 calendar is already filled with a number of anniversary events, providing opportunities for all to come together and celebrate this special moment in our history. Many more events are in the final planning stages.
My sincere appreciation goes out to all of you for your continual support and generosity to our school. Our faculty, staff and students are looking forward to celebrating our 50th Anniversary and I hope that you will join us by attending one or more of our planned celebrations. May you have an enjoyable and relaxing summer and as always “May Jesus Live In Our Hearts…Forever” Sincerely,
James F. Segredo President 2

Montini Catholic's Campus Minister, Michael Blanchette, teacher Hilda Castor, and seven ardent student volunteers traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana over their Spring Break (March 29 through April 2) to volunteer at the Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity (GIHFH). The organization, with the help of diligent volunteers, creates an opportunity for families and individuals in need to purchase and own simple, quality, affordable homes. Students at Montini Catholic have been participating in Habitat for Humanity projects during spring break since 2004.
"As a senior, I feel as if the work we did and the experience I had was a great way to end my high school career," said student Andrew Grossklaus. "My main memory from the trip is the people I met and the work we accomplished. I have never volunteered with Habitat before, but now know that it is truly a great organization to work for that makes a difference in so many people's lives." Grossklaus also had great things to say about his co-volunteers from Montini Catholic. "They are all people with great moral character, who worked hard and never complained even when they were tired. I am so blessed to have spent my spring break with these people!"
"Montini Catholic is proud to participate with such a wonderful organization that makes a difference in people’s lives," summarized Blanchette. "We are so grateful to our students who give up their own time to help others."

COMCAST LEADER & ACHIEVER - Joseph Palasek
Senior, Joseph Palasek, was recently congratulated for being the recipient of the 2014-2015 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship. Joe was nominated by Principal Maryann O'Neill. "Each year we are asked to nominate one senior student for this esteemed award," she informed. "The criteria for nomination has a strong emphasis on community service. Joe had completed over 200 hours of community service prior to his senior year, including a mission trip. He is well rounded, intelligent, a real gentleman and an all around good kid."
The program, funded through the Comcast Foundation, acknowledges high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service, academics and demonstrated leadership. Joe will receive a one-time grant of $1,000 for his accomplishments. "We are proud to recognize the efforts of young people who are helping to make our communities stronger, and applaud you for your achievements," said Charisse Lillie, President of the Comcast Foundation, in a letter congratulating Joe.
"I was very excited and honored to win this award," said Joe, who has been accepted into the University of Notre Dame, where he plans on majoring in mechanical engineering. "My parents were extremely proud of me and I am excited that I am able to represent Montini Catholic."
Friday, January 16th marked a very special morning for one young Montini Catholic student. Kathryn Junior was invited to the University of St. Francis in Joliet to enjoy Breakfast With the Bishop. Each year, the university hosts this unique event to celebrate the kick off of Catholic Schools Week. "I was very excited to be chosen to go represent Montini," said Junior. "I felt very honored, and my parents were very proud of me. The bishop talked to us about the privilege and honor to be a part of the Catholic schools system. He also talked about the values the catholic school system strives to instill in their students."

STUDENTS EARN
FIRST PLACE
AT ENGINEERING OLYMPICS
Montini Catholic history was made on April 24th at the annual Engineering Olympics held at the College of DuPage.
The College of DuPage Engineering Olympics is a design competition inviting high school teams, interested in engineering or design type fields, to participate in short design competitions. All of the designing and building occurs during the competition time. The goal is to encourage high school students, with a true interest in engineering, to consider pursuing education and careers in the field of engineering. A total of seventeen area high schools made up of over 225 students, including Montini Catholic, sent their best student teams (45 in all) to compete in an engineering design competition hosted by the COD Engineering Club.
VOICE OF Warren Dawes is congratulated by Principal Maryann O’Neill.
DEMOCRACY
CONTEST
Junior, Warren Dawes, placed 9th in the state in the Voice of Democracy Patriotic Essay Competition sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Warren was announced as the winner of the District competition during the 19th District's Annual Awards Banquet held in January. From there, his essay was among the entries judged at the state competition in Springfield in March. Warren is an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 97 in Darien and is sponsored by VFW Post 2838 in Darien.
Each year, high school students nationwide are invited to compete in the essay contest and challenged to prepare and record a 3 to 5 minute speech. This year's theme was - Why Veterans are Important to our Nation's History and Future. "From our nation's founding fathers to my own two grandfathers, many brave and patriotic men and women have given their time and talents to serve their country, with many even sacrificing their own lives to guarantee the rights and freedoms upon which our country was founded," said Warren in his award winning essay. "Each and every (veteran), no matter how big or small their contribution, no matter how famous or ordinary a citizen, deserves our admiration and thanks." MONTINI.ORG
L to R: Montini Catholic's winning engineering team: Mr. Peter Farina, Tabias Slater, Jack Manzara, Mr. Barry Briggs (Computer Technology Instructor), Chase Roedel, Antonio Carollo and Evan Fehring.
"Teams were given three design challenges as well as written challenges. All of the challenges were timed and scored and developed to encourage creativity and practical problem solving," explained Montini Catholic's Technology Director, Peter Farina. "Teams were tasked to build a bridge that could carry the most weight, build a car that could travel the farthest, and create a Rube Goldberg machine that completed a task with the highest degree of complexity."
In the end, it was Montini Catholic who came out on top. "Our team of Nino Carollo, Evan Fehring, Jack Manzara, Chase Roedel, and Tabias Slater crushed the competition taking first place by scoring 283 points," Farina proudly stated. "We scored forty more points than any other team!"
One team brought home the first place trophy, but Montini Catholic was also well represented by its two other teams made up of: Amanda Davidek, Jin Park, Brandon Sakas, DG Yoo, Joe Zabinski, Brian Matthews, Emeka Nkuku, Matt Ratajczyk, Mike Watson, Domantas Zilenas, and Raymond Zimmerman.

Winter CONCERT DAZZLES
NEW YORK BOUND
Senior Mia Porcelli is congratulated by Theater Director, Dr. Diann Matheson, upon her acceptance at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Mia Porcelli was recently congratulated on her acceptance to the Tisch School of the Arts in New York City. An Oak Brook resident, she is very excited about her future. "I've wanted to go to New York University since I was about ten years old," admits Mia, who has been a member of the Drama Club and a performer in all school productions during her four years at Montini Catholic. "The outstanding academics together with the diverse and colorful culture really did it for me," she said. Mia admits that she has been interested in the arts and performing as long as she can remember. She credits Montini Catholic with preparing her for her next big adventure after high school. "The challenging academic courses along with the very professional theater department at Montini has taught me a great deal about time management, dedication, and challenging myself." She added, "I have learned how to juggle school with performances and have gained a lot of tolerance for heavy work loads and long busy days." She feels very ready to take on a constantly moving city like New York. "Montini has really whipped me into shape!"
Music students brought a little warmth to a chilly winter evening on Tuesday, February 17th during their annual Winter Concert for parents, teachers and friends. The concert was held in the school's cafeteria and included performances by the Freshman Women's Chorale, Sophomore Women's Chorale, Varsity Singers, Chamber Choir, Accafellas, TrebleMakers, Freshman Jazz Band, and Advanced Jazz Band.
"I owe the most love and credit to Dr. Di (Diann Matheson, Drama Teacher and Play Director)," Mia said. "She has been the most amazing director, teacher and mentor and has blessed me with remarkable opportunities. I cannot thank her enough."
Dr. Matheson has the same sentiments toward Porcelli. "Mia is known in the theater world as a ‘triple threat’ in that she can sing, dance, and act. She is a very accomplished performer, one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of working with," she said. "She is very dedicated to the craft and takes her roles seriously. She studies the craft and intends to make her passion become her life's work. She is a terrific role model for others in the cast and cares about the ensemble. She shines on stage and off with a sparkling, genuinely nice personality. Although I am very sad she is leaving Montini Theater, I am thrilled she was accepted into NYU and know she will have a successful future ahead of her."
One of the 15 schools that make up New York University, Tisch is a center of study in the performing and media arts and a training ground for artists, scholars of the arts, and creative entrepreneurs. Notable alumni include Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Bridget Fonda and Lady Gaga, to name a few.

Every year, passionate Montini Catholic students are inspired to attend the March for Life event in Washington D.C. The march is held every year on January 22nd. The students, accompanied by Theology teacher, Mrs. Barb Caruso, boarded one of four buses at Blanchette Pastoral Center in Romeoville and headed to Washington, D.C. for the 42nd annual event.
CULTURAL AW
"January 22nd marks the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision making abortion on demand available throughout the United States," said Bishop R. Daniel Conlon in his letter addressing the Diocese of Joliet's Respect for Life Ministry. Bishop Conlon, Bishop Joseph Siegel and Father John Belmonte, S.J. (Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Joliet) joined the Montini Catholic students and over 200 young people from the Diocese of Joliet for the march.

On the morning of the march, the group started the day at the Verizon Center for a Youth Rally and Mass. Montini Catholic students were among the thousands of young pro-lifers fired up about their faith. "It was really an awesome sight to behold," recalled Barb Caruso, who is also the ProLife Club Moderator at Montini Catholic. Although members of the Diocese of Joliet began the march as one group, she informed that the crowd of approximately 700,000 made it impossible for them to stay together.
"The media simply does not do this event justice by reporting that it's a gathering of thousands," said Caruso. "The truth is there are hundreds of thousands of pro-lifers marching at the capitol. It was an absolutely amazing event – people for as far as the eye could see – all smiling, all happy, all joyful, and all pro-life!" Upon reflection after the trip, Caruso expressed her great pride in Montini Catholic students. "They took initiative in leading the Rosary, offering reflection on their experience, reaching out to new friends and showing just how awesome the Pro-Life Generation is. I was honored to be able to experience this rally with them." "This was my 5th trip to the march and I hope my last," Caruso added. "I hope that between now and next January, the law of the land is changed and abortion on demand is no longer legal. Then there will be no need for a March For Life."

tudents proudly embraced their diversity during Cultural Awareness Week, held March 23 through the 27th. The annual celebration began with a special prayer service featuring speaker Brother Ernest Miller, FSC. "We are fashioned in the image of God no matter one's gender, color, ethnicity or nationality," said Brother Ernest as he spoke to the students. "We all reflect God's truth and beauty." He challenged the students to use the week as a period of deep reflection and repentance and to examine deep seeded assumptions that all carry of others.
Prior to the liturgy, foreign language students participated in a Procession of Flags from 35 countries. The flags were then placed on display in the school entrance way for the duration of the week. Since Montini Catholic opened in 1966, the school has consistently grown into a more diverse community, currently having students from Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Lithuania, and just recently saying goodbye to two exchange students from Italy who visited over the MONTINI.ORG

previous semester. "This week is a time for us to recognize the many gifts we have received by becoming a more diverse community," noted Campus Minister Michael Blanchette in his address to the school. "Cultural Awareness is the foundation of communication which involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. Why do we do things in that way? How do we see the world? Why do we react in that particular way?"
Blanchette went on to explain how cultural awareness becomes central when we have the opportunity to interact with people from other cultures, as students do daily at Montini Catholic. "I always tell my students it is important for us to put ourselves in someone else's shoes to see the world from their perspective. It is then that we can truly be in ‘solidarity’ with one another," he said. "As we celebrate our diversity this week at Montini Catholic, may we stand ‘united’ for our acceptance and understanding of shared values and let us continue to work hand in hand to express our gratitude and make this world a better place." During the week, the celebration continued into the school's cafeteria where students were treated to a menu of foods from different countries each day.
A native of New Orleans, Brother Ernest has been a Brother of the Christian Schools for 20 years. He is a doctorial student at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He recently completed three years as the associate director for Mission and Ministry in the District of Eastern North America, the geographic region for all Lasallian educational ministries in six states, Washington, D.C., and Ontario, Canada.
Brother Ernest also served for two years as Director of Education and Lasallian Mission Formation in the Legacy District of Baltimore and served on the faculty of Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, La Salle College High School.

Montini Catholic Broncos traveled to Orlando Florida to take part in the Disney Baseball Spring Training held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The team experienced a full week of games, practices, team meetings and other activities.
According to Varsity Coach Rich Janor, the objective of the trip was to expose the athletes to world class training and competition facilities. "We also wanted to help our team build early season team chemistry," said Janor. "This will undoubtedly elevate our level of play and produce better results throughout the course of the season."
The High School Baseball Spring Training is one of the most popular programs at Disney's All -Star Sports Resort. "It sells out and has a waiting list each year," said Janor who plans on making the trip an annual tradition for the varsity team.
