MONTINI CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Annual Report 2015-2016

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dear friends and benefactors, I am happy to report that our 53rd year was filled with achievements in the classroom, on the field and on the stage. Our summer of 2018 was extremely active in preparation for the 201819 school year. The renovations of the boys and girls locker rooms, as well as the transition of the Duffy Memorial Stadium concession stand into the Vince Gavin Stadium Club, kept us all very busy. Close to $500,000 was invested in improvements and additions to our campus - including equipment for our students. My sincerest appreciation to those who contributed to the locker renovations and to the Gavin family - Vince's wife Eileen, and his children, Mary Eileen '87, Vince '88, John '91 and Paul '96 for their generosity in providing the funds for the construction of the Stadium Club. This year our seniors received over $15 million in scholarships and academic grants. The Math Team finished 9th at the ICTM State Finals and we had 20 Illinois State Scholars, 8 AP Scholars from the Class of 2019, 1 National Merit Commended Scholar as well as 121 IHSA Academic Achievement Honorees. Our STEM program was upgraded with the addition of a Pre-Engineering class and Drone Building to the curriculum. Drone Building became a reality this year through the generosity of the Norton Family - Jim and Mary, Jamie '98, Michael '02 and Colleen '04. Students in Robotics II will be building drones and our new Flight Club (under the direction of our Technology Director, Pete Farina,'87) has been established. Our Baseball Team won their first ever State Championship - Wrestling achieved their 15th 3A First Place title and our Football Team achieved 2nd Place in the IHSA 5A Championships. Our Fine Arts Department provided us with 4 outstanding concerts, a Fall Play and 3 sold out performances of “Little Mermaid.” The Campus Ministry office organized and sponsored an out of state Habitat for Humanity trip and participated in the March for Life Rally in Washington D.C. We sent 6 students to their first ever Border Immersion experience to El Otro Lado where they got to meet representatives from all sides of the immigration issue affecting our nation. Students also experienced their 4th international community service learning experience this summer on their mission trip to Jamaica. While successes give us the opportunity to celebrate, the challenges provide us the opportunity to move forward by enhancing our academic programs, expanding our extra-curricular programs, increasing our service outreach programs and broadening our fine arts curriculum. Once again, my sincere appreciation to all of you for your continual support. Your generosity truly makes a difference in the college preparatory education experience that we provide each Montini Catholic student. Thank you very much, and, “May Jesus Live In Our Hearts...Forever.” Sincerely,

James F. Segredo President

It happened this yearHistoric Highlights “I hope I can be a great advocate for what the locker represents and continue to represent the team and school.” - Raymond Wojkovich ‘19

Raymond Wojkovich Earns First ‘Bumber’s Corner Locker’ Honor Montini Catholic alumnus, Brian Forde' 89 had the unique idea to commemorate the memory of his late friend and fellow Bronco football teammate, Brad Bumber '89, this past summer. Upon hearing about an opportunity to fund a locker in the Broncos newly renovated locker room, Forde wanted to do something more in remembrance of his beloved teammate. So, he initiated the plan to create 'Bumber's Corner Locker.'

This year's honor went to senior (DB/WR) Raymond Wojkovich of Lombard. 'Ray is a 'lunch bucket' type of guy. He is a multiple sport athlete (Football and Baseball) and is a great competitor," said Head Football Coach Mike Bukovsky, who, along with Montini's Varsity Football staff, selected him for the honor. "Despite his modest stature, Ray is a physical player who does whatever it takes for the team, and is the kind of guy that won't back down from anybody. He starts at safety, and also excels on special teams." Coach Bukovsky added, "Ray makes the guys around him better, and has tremendous respect for his teammates, coaches, opponents, and the game in general. He is a Bronco through and through!"

Brad played linebacker for the Broncos from 1985 to 1989. He passed away on September 26, 2015 due to complications from his long battle with cancer. During and after his time at Montini, Brad Bumber became a living example of our LaSallian traditions both on and off the football field, and how those traditions and values positivelyinfluence and shape students during and after high school, throughout their entire life. Thanks to Forde and his former Bronco teammates from the Class of 1989, each year, a Bronco varsity football player will receive the honor to use the locker in Brad's honor. "Dedicating a football locker in his memory is the best way our class could think of to honor Brad's memory," said Forde. "The player chosen by his coaches to receive 'Bumber’s Corner' each year should feel extremely honored to be recognized for demonstrating similar attributes and qualities as Brad, and for the privilege to play Montini Bronco Football under the banner of his name and memory."

Brad Bumber '89 (with Bronco teammates l to r: Bob Starvel, Brian Forde, Marc Wozniak, Jeff Norton, Guy DeFeo and Mark Francl) - all from the Class of 1989 - during his last Homecoming Game at Montini in 2015.

During the summer of 2018 our Stadium Club was renovated & revamped thanksto the generosity of the Gavin Family in loving memory of their father, Vince Gavin. Vince Gavin was a member of Montini Catholic’s Board of Directors (1990 to 2007). His children, Mary Eileen Small ‘87, Vince ‘88, John ‘91 and Paul ‘96 are all graduates of Montini. Before his passing in 2016, Mr. Gavin watched his last Bronco football game from the Stadium Club and commented on what an asset the club could be for Montini. Armed with the desire to continue his legacy, the Gavin Family took their father’s vision and made it a reality. New decks, signage, seating, landscaping, and windows have been installed to provide a first class experience for Bronco fans as well as provide a space for small gatherings and meetings. The Vince Gavin Memorial Stadium was dedicated at the opening game on Friday, August 24th, 2018. 2018-2019 MONTINI CATHOLIC

Harvest Moon Howl

In it’s sixth year, the Harvest Moon Howl entertained close to 400 guests with live music from 7th Heaven. Additionally, guests participated in beer, wine and food tastings from local restaurants. A silent auction and raffles rounded out the evening for alumni, parents and friends.

Fashion Show The Montini Catholic Fashion Show has been a tradition for mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and friends for many years. The annual Fashion Show event features junior and senior students entertaining guests, while modeling the latest fashions from local business supporters. Current family and alumni members are also invited back to join in the holiday fun by modeling in the show. The Fashion show benefits the San Miguel Fund, which provides financial assistance to Montini Catholic families who find themselves experiencing hardships, such as serious illness, death or severe financial difficulties. The fund provides these students with an opportunity for a Catholic education that they may not otherwise be able to afford.
