MONTINI CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Annual Report
STEWARDSHIP, INVESTORS & SUPPORT
2013-2014
A MESSAGE
FROM THE
President
Dear friends and benefactors,
I am happy to report that our 48th year of education will go down as one of our more successful school years in Montini Catholic history. The 2013-14 school year was filled with much excitement and many stories of academic and extracurricular success. Over $14 million dollars was awarded in scholarships and academic grants to the 170 members of the class of 2014. Over the last three years, Montini Catholic graduating senior classes have earned over $40 million dollars in college scholarships and grants. I am also very proud to announce that 15 out of 18 Montini Catholic IHSA teams have earned the IHSA Academic Achievement Award for the 2013-14 school year. This means that the 15 teams, during their seasons, maintained an accumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the award was established by the IHSA in 2003, 136 Montini Catholic IHSA athletic teams have been presented this IHSA Academic Achievement Award.
We entered 2013-14 school year excited, but also anxious, concerning the launch of our iPad pilot program for our Digital Learning Initiative. This was a huge step for our school. Not only did the iPad pilot program provide our students and faculty with the information and training we needed for future implementation, it also exceeded our expectations. From the enthusiasm exhibited by our students and faculty involved in the pilot program throughout the year, we knew this was the direction in classroom instruction that we wanted for our school community.
Along with the academic success that we experienced, Montini Catholic had another outstanding year in the areas of extracurricular activities, spiritual programs and community service learning. Several State, Regional and Conference championships were claimed by our teams, and several Montini Catholic students were awarded individual athletic honors as well.
Our fine arts program, exhibits, concerts and performances were of outstanding quality, and students performed to sold out audiences throughout the year. The Campus Ministry office organized and sponsored 46 community service learning opportunities during this past school year, including two out of state Habitat for Humanity trips and several weekend trips to homeless shelters and soup kitchens in the city of Chicago.
The success and accomplishments of all our school programs is due to the leadership and dedication of our Principal, Maryann O’Neill, and the members of our school administration, faculty and staff. I can confidently say that it is one of the best faculty and staffs in the State of Illinois.
The success we experienced in our school programs was also experienced in the business side of the school. Montini Catholic is in a very sound financial position and, through tuition collection and development activities, Montini Catholic met all financial obligations and was still able to invest close to $350,000 in capital improvements.
Development Activities exceeded budget on the revenue side by over $100,000, and we saw an increase in participants to our Annual Fund. The renovation of the baseball field is just one of the many improvements last year that added to the quality of the facilities that we provide to our students, as well as the overall appearance of the school campus.
Our administration, faculty, staff and students know that the bar has been set high as we begin our 49th school year, and we accept this challenge. If we continue to challenge ourselves, and continue to look at ways to grow our school programs and advance our Lasallian, Catholic mission of education, I truly believe we will continue to experience the success and growth we have seen in our school programs and school community.
Once again, my sincere appreciation to all of you for your continual support. Your generosity truly makes a difference in the college preparatory education experience that we provide each Montini Catholic student.
Again, thank you very much, and, “May Jesus Live In Our Hearts … Forever.” Sincerely,
James F. Segredo President

Our Mission
Montini Catholic High School is a family-centered, co-educational, college preparatory high school, rooted in the life and teaching of Jesus Christ as emulated by St. John Baptist DeLaSalle and committed to the education of the whole person.
Our LaSallian tradition recognizes the sacredness of all persons and educates students of diverse abilities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Each student is expected to participate in an educational setting that will emphasize the message of Christ, service, and responsibility to Church, family and community.
Montini has a religious purpose and an academic purpose. The religious is primary, as the religious nature of the school pervades the entire school community. Montini works to create a Catholic educational community in which faith, culture and knowledge are integrated among teachers, students and parents in a spirit of cooperation.
Montini's programs attempt to challenge and encourage the spiritual, intellectual, personal, cultural, social and physical development of each student.

DIGITAL LEARNING
Initiative
In 2013, Montini Catholic announced the implementation of our new Digital Learning Initiative for the 2014-2015 academic school year. The program embraces the writing, thinking and design tools of the digital age, and is the largest expansion of technology in our history. "This is certainly an exciting and historic event in our academic program," said President Jim Segredo. The program involves a 1-to-1 device roll-out and installation of AirServer software in all classrooms which will conveniently allow teachers to mirror the work being done on their iPads directly onto classroom SMART®Boards.
their iPads. They believe that using an iPad in the classroom has been an overall positive experience. In addition to lightening the load of heavy backpacks, the use of digital textbooks will open possibilities for content delivery never before possible with a hard copy textbook. Based on anticipated digital textbook adoptions, students will also experience a significant cost savings with digital textbooks.
“We’ve given out 691 iPads to students,” said Kevin Beirne, Director of Digital Learning and Professional Development. “Students now have many options for organizing their school life,” he added. “And they have access to almost all of their school material all of the time.”
Mr. Beirne also informed that teacher/student communication is greatly enhanced at Montini, thanks to the iPads. And, due to the technology, students are collaborating more outside of the classroom.
iPad Pilot Program participants, spring 2014.
During the last school year, due to the generosity of Leigh Ann Kazma, her parents, Jerry and Margaret Kazma, and the Kazma Foundation, the school was able to provide teachers with iPads for professional development training and for use in the classroom. The iPads also allowed Montini to embark on a 1-to-1 iPad pilot program with a small group of students. The success of this program inspired the technology team to move forward.
The devices will not be replacing teachers, but will be enhancing the classroom environment by allowing students to develop better study habits and stronger organization skills. Surveys conducted at schools that have already implemented iPad programs have revealed that the vast majority of students believe that they are more productive, their classes are more engaging, and that they take better notes while using

Montini's Technology Director and Instructor, Peter Farina, has been an integral part of the creation and implementation of Montini's Digital Learning Initiative, and is considered to be one of the driving forces behind it. Over the summer, he and his technology team were very busy installing infrastructure upgrades to ensure a seamless transition going into the new school year.
"We are very excited to be able to roll out our Digital Learning Program a year ahead of schedule," said Montini Principal Maryann O'Neill. " We believe that the iPads provide our students with excellent tools that will bring the outside world into our classrooms."
Montini Catholic is dedicated to providing students with the skills, tools, and experiences needed to succeed in today's world. The Digital Learning Initiative will better prepare our students for college, and the future beyond.
STUDENT RESOURCE TEAM KEEPING
IPAD PROGRAM Moving Torward Technology Director, Peter Farina, hosted the school year's first Student Technology Resource Team (STaRT) meeting on Tuesday, October 21st.
STarRT’s mission is to help sustain and improve upon the school's Digital Learning Initiative, the school-wide 1to-1 iPad Program embracing the writing, thinking and design tools of the digital age.
"We focused on inviting students who were part of the iPad Pilot Program last school year," informed Farina. "Some were already computer club members that I knew and trusted," he added. " I also asked a number of teachers to recommend students as well." The team met twice during the last school year. At the meetings, stu-
dents were surveyed and their help was sought in fine-tuning plans for the 2014-15 roll out. Farina and his Digital Learning Initiative team also trained the members on the skills necessary to aid in the roll out for the new school year.
"In July and August, STaRT members helped us unpack the iPads, test them, and case them up," said Farina. "They also received their iPads a week before all the other students and helped us troubleshoot our roll out plans." The students also assisted with the development of the training instructions and procedures used with the rest of the student body.
On the day of the roll out, August 14, 2014, the STaRT students helped peers
who were having difficulties with setting up their new iPads in classrooms and in the computer labs. "We could not have gotten through the day as successfully as we did without the STaRT members, recalls Farina. Since day one, STaRT students have been keeping Farina informed about all of the issues their peers are experiencing with their iPads, and helping devise solutions. Members also help out at the iPad Help Desk during their study hall time. The Help Desk is available throughout the school week to students needing assistance with their new iPads.
"I am very thankful to our new team," said Farina. "The STaRT students are keeping our Digital Learning Initiative moving forward."
