TERMS OF SALE
All cattle in this sale sell under the sale terms as written by the American Shorthorn Association. Updates will be available on sale day. PAYMENT TERMS: Terms of the sale are cash or check made payable to Aegerter Marketing Services, Inc., immediately following the sale and before the cattle are removed from the premises. Purchasers or their representatives must sign the bill of sale prior to leaving the sale. BILLED ACCOUNTS: All billed accounts are due and expected within 10 days of the sale date. At 10 days, a two percent service charge will be added to the unpaid balance and an additional two percent will be added every 30 days thereafter. LIABILITY: Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the seller of a reasonable amount of time. Neither the owner, employees, auctioneer, sale manager or other affiliated personnel can be responsible of any accidents, but they will make every effort to provide for the safety and comfort of those attending. BREEDING GUARANTEE: We guarantee all livestock sold as sound breeders. However, if we feel that a heifer has been fed to an extreme level of obesity for the show ring, we hold the feeder responsible for any reproductive problems and no longer feel responsible to guarantee that individual animal. In the case that this should occur, Alden Farms will still try and help you through two breeding seasons. EMBRYOS: Alden Farms will guarantee one pregnancy of each package of embryos selling if implanted by a certified technician. FLUSH RIGHTS: Alden Farms reserves the right to one flush of eight or more grade 1 or 2 embryos at our expense on all females selling. Flush to take place at the convenience of the buyer at a location of their choice.
Welcome Shorthorn Enthusiasts ... I don’t know how many times, after trying to plan a sale like this for over a year, that I’ve thought about pulling the plug on it. With the events that have surrounded us all year, it’s easy to be negative and get down on life as we’ve known it. On my yearly trek to Modoc, I also visited a couple operations I’ve never been to and one included a visit with an old friend, Ron Rutan. We were able to visit a while after I looked over the calves and I asked Ron if they had thought about sitting out this year because of all the chaos. He said, “Never!” He said, “Everyone needs to get out, get things back to normal and stay positive about where we are.” He couldn’t be more right. The more I thought about that, the more excited I got about putting the catalog together and planning our celebration. They say you should never look back, look straight ahead and into the future and charge on! I believe that, but I also believe it doesn’t hurt once in a while to reflect on where you’ve been, the people that helped get you there and the breeding program that got you in the spotlight. The younger generation needs to know some of the stories we can tell! Without them they won’t know who helped pave the way for them to be successful and have the freedoms they have today. I’m sure the 100 year milestone means more to our family than anyone else, but not many get there. It’s also our chance to pay tribute and thank the multitude of people that have become friends and helped us achieve this milestone. We owe everything to the breed of cattle that got us here. How many people have the opportunity to travel the country making new friends, seeing new places and making relationships that last the rest of our lives? For some of us, it is luck. Most of it though, is the passion you were born with and the way you were brought up as kids. Myself, Ron and Ramona (our late sister) were lucky to have parents that installed a work ethic that gave us the drive to make something of ourselves and the freedom to let us decide the paths we wanted to take. We didn’t get to this milestone by accident. We have worked our butts off to be successful and make a living for our families so our kids and grandkids can work on “The Next 100 Years”! Negativity is a curse. I say that, because I’ve seen enough of that the past six months that I was on the Board to last a lifetime! If someone as old as Ron Rutan (joke between us) can be so positive about the breed, the people in it and life in general, then there’s no reason we all can’t be that way. The strides the Shorthorn breed has made is the envy of everyone. We have the most family friendly breed of anyone and the cattle that can excel in every aspect of the industry. Let’s all work together to support our association, the people that help run it and the breeders that are In it, because the sky is the limit when we all work together. I almost forgot something -- we’re gonna have a sale! The good ones are in it. This one is special. We’re trying a little different approach to our sale! For those attending, the cattle will be on display. If you can’t make it sale day, check out the videos on-line and give us a call if there’s any way we can assist you! From the bottom of our hearts, all the “Aldens” thank you for the many years of enjoyment we’ve had and those that are yet to come! Robert Alden

It wouldn’t be an AF sale if Lot 1 wasn’t a Margie. Only because we have five heifer calves coming out of her next year would she ever leave. For those like me, that believe in the power of a pedigree, study this one. Margie 6109 was born and raised at Dean Farms, where I worked with my good friend, Keith Come for two years. There are very few that have made an impact in as many herds as she has. If you’e ever seen AR SU LU Meg listed, you know how many good ones she is responsible for, Hot Commodity being one of those. This is one to build a herd around, and you will see many offspring selling that prove she’s one of the best we’ve raised.

You have to take the good with the bad in the cattle business. One of the saddest days I’ve ever had, is when checking cows this summer, I came across three cows lying next to each other like they were at a show, under a tree, struck by lightning. It never happens to the bad ones! Three of our best, and 1239 was one of them. I sat there teary-eyed for a while wondering, why?! Just know that we flushed 1239 multiple times to multiple bulls and we wouldn’t have done that if she was one of the bad ones. Enough said!

Good friends, Kyle and Kylie Dameron purchased a Waco heifer out of 1325 that was shown very successfully. Playful Cait 01 lived until she was 16, and during those years she was responsible for well over $150,000 in progeny for multiple people. This is one beautiful female, especially when she calves and you see the perfect udder, along with the maternal traits Shorthorns are known for. She could be bred many different ways and my bet is, she will still make them all good!

There are so many good things about this bull. He’s not perfect, but none of the others are either, regardless of what they might say. We saw CC at Nichols, along with some of the best from other breeds and immediately fell in love with him. Tyler even liked him, and that’s saying something! Easily one of the best bulls there, no matter what color. He’s been out with the cows all summer and has not melted like so many do. He has as much true muscle shape and body width as any Shorthorn bull we’ve seen. After first leasing him for the summer, we decided after how good our ET calves looked, and how good he looked, to buy him. We truly believe we will be able to say, ‘And the rest is history.’

Home Brew, raised by our good friends, the Kohlstaedts, is a real good female producer, as well as the best heifer bull we’ve used since K-Kim Payton. He puts a really good look and beautiful udder on his daughters. You won’t be disappointed in how 1851 will produce for you.

She’s as ugly as they get. That being said, you wouldn’t think she could produce a heifer we thought good enough for the Iowa Beef Expo. Old line genetics wrapped up tight that put the AF prefix on the map. Someone will get a bargain here.

Everyone thought I had lost it. Flush a purebred Shorthorn cow to a Hereford. This is the result and, in my opinion, it worked. I’ve thought for a long time we are missing out by not promoting British cross cows enough. I think this is a beautiful cow and much like when “Old Smokey” was shown, when someone asks, I can say they are 1/2 Shorthorn. We are retaining 1/2 embryo interest in this one, so someday people can see how good a 3-way cross of British genetics can be.

‘Plus’ADVANTAGE
There are several Shorthorn Plus cattle in this sale. It’s a market that Shorthorn breeders need to take advantage of. They are on fire and prove time and time again how we can compete with any breed out there. We are proud of the Plus cattle we have raised and will continue to promote the versatility of the Shorthorn, whether it’s in the show ring or in the pasture. One of my favorite bred heifers out of one of our most productive cow families. The Gina cow family originated from a show heifer I purchased for Jalane in 2000 from Eddie & Lawrence Grathwohl. The Gina’s are sound, easy fleshing and productive. I really like the imperative daughters we have in production for their beautiful udders and femininity.

Our good friends, the Jobs in Australia, produce some of the best Shorthorn genetics in the world. Nic says Rock Star is the best bull they have ever produced. In their recent production sale, progeny out of him averaged over $13,000. This is a one-time chance to capture these genetics, and a big thank you to the Jobs for a true sale highlight!
